Thanks guys.
@shanaber that potato sounds great, also hanging out for the recipe.
@elise4270 fingers crossed for some good news, and I'm sorry you are still being plagued by a headache.
Well I've managed 8 days on track in a row now - progress on last week. And I have the next couple of days well planned out. I definitely do better with a plan and am finding if I fill in the following days food the night before it really helps. I still make tweaks but anything helps I guess.
I'm a bit of a data nut, I love looking at trends, and knowing how things work. And I'm going to say that my garmin calories burned is fairly accurate. I've kept to within 50 calories of goal except 2 days, one I was 250 over, and the other I was 250 under, I have my loss at 1lb a week, or 0.5kg. And my trend app informed me that I am about 50 calories over that trend for the week. Its nice to have confirmation that I'm average haha.2 -
@Elise4270 - I think you could put any veggies you like on it. We had broccoli, carrots and snap peas last night because that is what I had on hand. We have done squash (summer and/or crook neck) zucchini, mushrooms, etc.. You can steam them in the microwave pretty quickly, I don't even add water.
I am sorry you are feeling so poorly and hurting so much! Wish I could fix it for you :flowerforyou:
Which surgery are they looking to schedule? A redo or THR? Or for your shoulder? The governor just announced today here that they can start doing 'scheduled' surgeries but it is limited to things that are required like probably yours and not things like cosmetic surgeries. I have another (very active) friend who is waiting to get a THR scheduled and she is to the point of not being able to move much so will be happy they can at least get it scheduled now.
@ddmom0811 - that is really sweet of you to look after your hair dresser and make sure she is doing ok. Mine could probably take care of all of us 😁 She has done hair forever because she likes doing it but her husband owned his own company (she is running it now) and she has a huge beautiful home up in the hills here. I have been trying to give bigger tips though when we order out food. I know the people still working in the restaurants and doing the takeout and delivery are really hurting so I like to help however I can too.
I think we can all be overly critical of ourselves when we look in the mirror. I have places that I call my leftovers... where things didn't exactly snap back into place after I lost all the weight. Underneath though it is muscle and sometimes I just have to remind myself of how far I have come and what I can do at 'my age'!
I have done pretty good today with food given that it is a rest day and I tend to go for carbs for whatever reason. I had a good breakfast then grocery shopped and came home and had some cheese and crackers. I think we are having leftover spaghetti and a salad for dinner unless DH has something else in mind.
The grocery stores were interesting since I haven't been in about a month. Trader Joes wasn't crowded exactly but it is a smaller store and it is just harder to maintain the distancing. Most people seemed to be at least trying. At the regular grocery store there was a big sign that said you were not allowed in without a face covering and they had people monitoring how many were in the store and limiting how many went in. I was surprised though at how many people had no mask on and mostly it was women. I guess they felt they didn't look good in a mask or didn't want to mess up their makeup or something but seriously I wanted to call them out on it. Lots of the aisles were crowded so I just wandered until it thinned out. They are still out of soup, pasta and toilet paper which is just amazing to me, not that we needed any of those except soup for DH. I did do a bit of pre-need buying in getting a couple of extra packages of bacon. We don't use it a lot and I will freeze it but I suspect it may be in short supply with the pork plants shutting down. I think at least 3 are closed now. I also got a small ham finally and we will have an Easter-like dinner this weekend!
So questions - do you have masks, do you wear them and do they make your face seriously hot? I have one I made and it is SO hot and it is just made out of regular cotton fabric. I am wondering if the ones you can buy online are any better?1 -
We’re redoing the osteotomy, (rod), then in 6 months re-do the labral repair.
I hope your friend gets scheduled soon. I’m in manageable misery. I can wait as long as they need me too. Doc said they’ll test prior to surgery so the surgery won’t cause an asymptomatic person to have a symptomatic case. Sure that’ll be the case everywhere.
Mask
I don’t wear one, dh does. He mentioned today that it makes him cough. If I were somewhere where one was provided, like when I picked up shoulder xrays, they issued me one, I’d use it, which dh took for yard mowing.1 -

The only time I wear a mask is when I'm working with a patient who is potentially infectious.
I do not wear a mask when out and about. If I were coughing, well I'd stay home, but then I'd wear one if I had to.
Wearing a mask protects other people if you are actively coughing. It does not protect the wearer unless it is handled correctly and with full PPE.
When we remove our PPE we have a specific way of doing it, to ensure we do not cross contaminate. Most mask wearers do not wear masks correctly, or remove them correctly.
So no, I do not believe there is any point in a mask. Unless you are coughing/sneezing, so you should be staying home in that instance.1 -
Hey all!
Took a break from MFP...been busy this week.
Lots to catch up on!
@ddmom0811 yes....doing crush your core and it’s hard. Lots of Pilates moves so I struggle but manage. Feel it in my neck! Loving the bike classes.
As for body parts, I agree. I’m in better shape now at 56 than I was 10 years ago. I can not control collagen though. But I’m still rocking a bikini (in my own backyard and because it’s too hot for a one piece 🤣🤣
@shanaber I do wear a mask - required here unless outside and can socially distance. I haven’t been too hot but it does obstruct vision sometimes ....annoying !
@Elise4270 that pain sounds awful! Hope you find relief soon.

Had my appt yesterday. Got an X-ray to confirm no worsening of the stress fracture . He said an MRI would confirm full healing but that going by pain level would be adequate as I add back activity. So now I can jog on the bike, walk and do some strength stuff like squats. Running again in 3-4 weeks.
My eating has been inconsistent - really need to get back on my plan.
Son is heading back to NYC on Sunday 😞.
His project is starting back up. Stressed a bit for him.
I’m going to make that banana bread!3 -
@bearly63 - that is great news! So glad you are making progress! I would be worrying too - would not want to be or have any family going to NYC!
@avidkeo - it isn't optional for us. I know the mask is to protect others from us not the other way around but you can't go to a store or really anywhere here now without a mask, it is required. Technically I should even wear one when I run but I just can't. If it gets to be an issue where a Ranger or someone tells me I must I will bring one in my pocket and wear it if I am near other people. I don't go out really much - today to the grocery stores was the first in a month so I haven't really needed to worry about it before. I just found it hot... the gloves too, but I will abide by the rules when I have to go to a store or other business.

Fair enough. The messages are so mixed, and I guess the authorities think better to wear one than not.

We are supposed to wear masks here too. I have some of the outdoor dust masks I am using. They do get hot and fog up my glasses. That is what bothers me the most. I have to go out and get some stuff for my cousin that is in the nursing home, so will be doing the neighborhood shopping while I am out. It makes for a long, stressful day.1
-
My mom made tons of cloth masks and that is what I wear when going out. I had read something about not removing them properly makes it worse, like @avidkeo said. But I didn't read how to remove it properly. So I am probably not doing myself any good. But I do wear it in the stores. I have hardly gone out though.
@bearly63 - sorry about your son going back to NYC. Where does he live there? When my daughter worked in Manhattan she lived in Astoria, Queens. I loved visiting her there, but very thankful she moved to Portland, OR one year ago. Good news that you can run again in 3-4 weeks. That will be here in a blink. Jog on bike? Yikes, is that what they make you do in the Peloton classes?
@shanaber - I saw your comment about the calories from Garmin on the main feed. I haven't looked at my HR but I know for sure it is much lower running on TM than outside. I am doing a lot more sprints/HIITs on the TM that I ever did outside because I'm using the Peloton app.
I saw an article on my news feed about not running too much or exercising too much while stuck at home. I thought that was just me! LOL
Yesterday's Hello Fresh meal was so good. It sounded terrible, but we both loved it. It was pitas stuffed with sliced sweet potatoes, avocado, cucumber salad, and a spicy sauce. There was a lot of cucumber salad left over to put on the plate. They only offer 4 veg choices a week and I buy 3. 2 looked awful for this week but I finally settled on this one and glad I did. The calories are pretty high for these Hello Fresh meals, but compared to eating out, they are low!
off topic: I just can't seem to ever catch up with grading for school. I don't know about other subjects but for teaching programming, grading online is much harder than in the classroom. You would think it would be easier! And I've taught programming for 10+ years online for a college, but that curriculum is designed for online. This is not! I usually walk to each student's computer, watch them run the code, look it over and ask them questions - and give a grade. With this I have to download the code, run it, make written comments, send back. The only thing that is easier is tests. But we aren't supposed to give tests, except for in the AP classes. I do have 2 AP classes but we are in "practice mode" for the real AP exams.1 -
@ddmom0811 My instructors also mentioned that they are way behind in grading. I had one class just update grades from 3/30 today. With figuring out how to do the class and grading and planning everything, it's got to be busy. They have so much more to do, instead of labs each student turns in 3 assignments for that week. 50*3 is 150 more assignments a week for one course. guess I shouldn't complain about doing them.
weight
horrible. I ate a giant burger last night without the bun ate the fries I swore I didn't want, then ate 2 -3 sweet rolls. go figure. I am +12.5lbs for the year. that's 10.6% ugh. my fat pants still fit though. I need new bras, cheap, t-shirt like bigger ones. Maybe some that fasten in front so my shoulder isn't aggravated. We're gonna turn this weight gain around.
food today
no plans. I'm not hungry. Pt was brutal today, made my eyes water, so I promptly took a tylenol 3 when I got home. No headache today though, unless the T3 gives me one. Maybe a nap instead of food today, after my 1pm class. I should cook some chicken so I can have a salad later.1 -
I think the whole mask thing is funny. First we were told no need for masks. Meanwhile the asian countries are all wearing them. Europe joins in etc. Then were told mask optional. Now its masks required. I am going to comply but in reality, I will just avoid being too close to people (sad) and washing my hands constantly.
@ddmom0811 He lives on Wall Street with 3 college teammates. They are looking to move though because right now, rents are dropping....so at least one positive. I will miss visiting NYC - its such a cool place to live at this age not in a pandemic. We talked him into to staying after college and to use his network while he could (went to Columbia). I think he will be ready to move in the next year or so.
As for peloton, hill climbs are often out of the saddle. It's actually nice - gives the buns a break. Thinking about doing a "Tour de Peloton challenge" - a group you can join where you basically do a non stop ride where you take a class from all 23 instructors, no breaks. It's usually 2.5 hours long....you can do which ever classes they offer but it has to be one from each. I will probably die.
@quilteryoyo saw this tip on social media. Fold up a napkin long ways and place it in the mask across the top, over your bridge of your nose - it tends to keep glasses from fogging up.
Food:
I made the mistake of making cinnomon streusul muffins from the back of the box of Klondike cinnamon oat mix. OMG....they are the bomb! I ate two for breakfast so that my thighs would match. All about the balance.😎
I will go high protein for lunch and a buddha bowl for dinner.

@elise4270 - oh my gosh those poor professors. And poor students. I'm sure labs are much more fun that writing papers. Poor all of us! Sorry about the PT pain and the weight.
@bearly63 - oh wow, my daughter went to Columbia too. Graduated in 2015. She lived there 3.5 years and then moved to Portland, OR last January. She played volleyball, but quit after 2 years. Glad you balanced out the cinnamon rolls, lol. That challenge sounds cool! The length of the runs is one thing that has surprised me about the runs on Peloton. I used to always run an hour, however far that got me is what I did. I cut it back to 45 mins when I started getting the burning feet. On the streak I'm doing something different each day and yesterday did a 10 min warmup with one instructor, then a 20 min with another and a 10 min cool down with someone else. I guess they are shorter because they are mostly HIIT.
1 -
Did anyone else sign up for the Rock n Roll Virtual Run Club? I just did. You can connect to your garmin and get rewards somehow lol2
-
@quilteryoyo you can get masks that have a foam strip across the bridge of the nose, they stop hot air going up to you glasses. If you are wearing home made ones or cheaper ones without it, go get some foam that you can cut into strips. They are the ones I use when in the operating room, otherwise like you I get fogged glasses and it's annoying.
Looks like this
@ddmom0811 yay on the running! How are the feet holding up with the changing routine? A mask properly worn should be fitted around the face completely, or as firmly as you can. Removal is simple, untie, or break the threads (or grab the elastic from behind the ears) while only touching the very sides of the mask and dispose in the rubbish (or wash if reusable). Then immediately wash your hands. The washing the hands bit is the part most forget. And a proper 20 seconds wash.
Mask Rant in the spoiler. Please ignore if you want and I promise this will be my last mask rant. The thing with masks is once they are on, they should never be touched at all, not even to readjust. They are considered contaminated. So any constant handling/touching can cause cross contamination. The reason I get all annoyed about the mask thing is so so many wear them incorrectly (only over their mouth, not their nose) and/or constantly touch them to have a drink of coffee, or bite to eat, or talk on their cell phone etc. My beef isn't with masks, they are a fantastic tool, but widespread usage without proper training is not sensible.
Also the masks don't protect the wearer. The masks that public wear are what we use in operating room to prevent the patient getting sick if we happen to sneeze or cough. They aren't designed to protect us. The masks that ARE designed to protect the wearer are the n95 ones. They require proper training to put on, because they form a seal around the mouth and nose to stop any droplets getting in. And they take a bit of practice to get used to.
Covid-19 is a droplet contained infection, so immediately falls from the air and lands on surfaces. Your BEST protection is constant and consistent hand washing. A mask will not protect your if someone sneezes unless you wear an N95 one because the general masks have lots of spaces for airborn particles to get through. If you are coughing and sneezing, then yes, wear a mask, you protect other people. But frankly if you are coughing and sneezing you should be staying home.
And frankly the reason authorities over there are saying wear a mask, is probably because it makes them look good, giving advice when there isn't much else they can do. Asian countries wear masks because the air pollution is so bad. And they routinely wear masks. If they were so effective, the covid-19 wouldn't have spread so easily there. It's a false equivalency. Actually I just looked up the history of Asian cultures wearing masks, and Japan started the trend in the early 1900s. Mostly as a social courtesy if they had a cough and/or cold to prevent passing it on to others. Then in the 1950s due to air pollution and pollen, the wearing of a mask in Japan became more common and spread from there.
Sorry, didn't realise this was such a sore point for me lol. I'll leave it there from now on, I promise.
@elise4270 I'm sorry you are having such a hard time lately! Biggest hugs! I hope you took your nap!

For me, I had a good day yesterday, stuck to my plan which was great. Planned today's meals last night definitely helped. I think im over the biweekly "need to eat everything" mode. No sign of period yet but should rear her ugly head any day now.
I have switches to a higher carb diet now im ramping up my training. Much bigger meals I noticed the last 2 days. But then I'm running more so have more calories to play with. Hmmm who knows.1 -
Today's lab class we discussed a covid case study. It was mentioned that some new emerging and ever changing list of symptoms includes 4-5 days of headache. uh? and prior to this episode of headaches I had, I was so tired that I napped two days prior... I've had an ever so slight bit of chest congestion, and am not prone to seasonal respiratory ailments. I just figure it was normal-ish... Maybe it is my normal and I'm just on the lookout for vid symptoms. swear. I haven't shared my query with dh, he'd panic. Well. guess if I'm sick and don't tell anyone, it never happened.
anyone else feel like every little symptom is THE VIRUS?
I'm "cooking" coconut rice. mmmm!2 -

Have had this conversation a lot with the ED drs. I get allergies so when I wake in the morning I have a dry itchy throat, runny nose and am sneezing. And I'm like omg am I coming down with something? No just forgot my allergy meds again. Damn.
Even more hugs Elise! Worth getting tested to ease your worries?1 -
@bearly63 - I am going to look up the muffins. I was thinking about making something like coffee cake muffins (I have a good recipe) or maybe brownies... someone here mentioned brownies a while ago and I can't get them out of my head!
@ddmom0811 - I would not want to be a teacher at any level these days, trying to meet all the online classroom requirements and grading. I hadn't thought about all of the grading and how tough that must be. As well as the extra demands on the students like @elise4270 mentioned.
@avidkeo - I agree completely on the masks. We had a bunch of people here insistent on finding surgical masks and then when they found out they wouldn't protect them they wanted N95s, all I could think was these people are crazy. They aren't supposed to be going anywhere so why do they need the masks all of the 1st responders and medical staff need and can't get enough of... It also makes me crazy to see people with their masks pulled down under their chins. When I was at the store I tried really hard not to touch it but it kept sliding down (as my glasses also slid down) so I tried to only touch the top where the wire is to keep it pinched to my nose. Definitely not ideal.
@RunsOnEspresso - I did not sign up for the Rock and Roll Virtual
@Elise4270 - I definitely try not to think of every cough and body ache as a symptom but it definitely pops into my mind more than I want it too. When I was trying to run today and everything felt so tired and hard I totally was thinking hmmm maybe I have it and it is the reason this run sucks 🤣
Food is actually going pretty well. I didn't exactly eat breakfast but had a piece of banana bread before I headed out and a protein coffee and tangerines when I got back. For me when it is hot out nothing tastes better than a couple of tangerines or and orange. I guess it is the hydration factor. Lunch will be a big salad with some chicken and dinner is an unknown. Something from the freezer or we will order something. I am thinking maybe Mexican only our favorite small restaurant isn't open even for take out. Oh and I finally got my order from Costco and it included the SkinnyPop popcorn I have been craving! Such a great snack!
On thing from my run - I ended up needing the bathroom about 2 miles out. At some point in the last few days they have installed a soap dispenser! It is pretty sad how excited I was to see it!2 -

Coffee cake muffins and protein coffee... I need to know more!
Yay for soap dispenser but lol seriously haha0 -
@ddmom0811 I agree. That meal doesn't sound good. I'm really glad it tasted yummy. I have zero experience with on-line classes, so have no insight there. But, it does really sound like a lot more work for you. Hang in there.
@Elise4270 Glad no headache so far. Hope the PT helped the shoulder, even if it did make your eye water. Sorry about your weight gain, but like you said, you are going to turn it around! You can do it!
@bearly63 I may have to try that trick. The muffins sound yummy.
@Avidkeo Thanks. Right now I use one that probably is no protection for anyone - a dust mask people use when working in the lawn.I understand your rant. Still wish more people would wear it so if they do happen to cough or sneeze, it isn't contaminating whatever surface they are close to. I do have a question though. If it keeps my droplets inside when I sneeze, why is it not effective to protect me if someone in my space sneezes or coughs? (Serious question. Food today. I had my normal breakfast. But,today was shopping day for me, mom & dad, and the neighbor's and taking care of some stuff for my cousin. I was gone from around 9:30 until 4:30. I ate a protein bar at 1. When I got home, I was starving. (I was pleased with myself for not going crazy in the grocery store since I was hungry.) I didn't want to take the time to cook. Thank goodness I saved some chicken from dinner last night and bought some greens for a salad. So, that's what I had...a huge salad with broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, mushrooms, cheese, and chicken.

This is complicated now hahaTo answer your spoiler question, it's about placement. When you sneeze, the majority of the droplets are contained in a small space to start, then dispurse once they hit the air. Because a mask sits directly in front of your mouth, it catches most of the droplets before they can dispurse.
If someone without a mask sneezes it creates a cloud of droplets that hang in the air before falling to the floor. Most masks don't form a seal around the face so when you breathe in, you suck air from the unsealed areas and into your lungs. If you pass through this cloud - which can dispurse a big distance, I think just shy of 2m - then all the air you suck in contains these droplets.
That's why for a mask to work for the wearer it needs that airtight seal - so air is forced through the filter, and not via the easiest route possible.
Hope that makes sense!1 -
@Avidkeo - my protein coffee is exactly what it sounds like. I put my protein powder in my coffee. Sometimes I add a bit of milk too (or use a Starbucks Latte). Here is the muffin recipe I use too. Honestly I think you could use just about any coffeecake recipe and bake it in muffin cups. I have used the King Arthur Cinnamon-Streusel Coffeecake recipe as well.
I was surprised honestly by some of the reports of how far the 'mist' from a sneeze or cough can travel. I know it is different from the heavier droplets that don't go as far, but still it is pretty amazing we don't all just keep infecting each other with various mist borne illnesses.2 -

Honestly I think you could use just about any coffeecake recipe and bake it in muffin cups. I have used the King Arthur Cinnamon-Streusel Coffeecake recipe as well.

Mmmm ill have to try that protein coffee. Do you use the powder instead of milk (or creamer? Is that the typical us thing? Powdered creamer? We don't have that here and it sounds vile) eta reading comprehension fail! Protein Milk duh
I may have more baking on my hands this weekend!0 -
Thanks @Avidkeo . That does make sense. Another question.Does the mask protect at all. I see that the virus could get in from the sides, but seems like there would be fewer virus get in than if you had nothing. Is it a matter of quantity, or does it just take one little virus spore to potentially make you sick?

@elise4270! Thanks....we shall see how it goes. The recipe I have used for a bowl of roasted veggies is this one: https://www.wellplated.com/whole30-vegetarian-power-bowls/ you could basically use any veggie you have and make up a dressing that sounds good, add whatever protein you have or use eggs. Pretty tasty.
As for symptoms, they are all over the map....if your breathing is ok, your probably fine....and if you have it, its a mild version. I am with you....I start thinking that I have all kinds of stuff when I get sick or find a bump....
@ddmom0811 What a small world. Zach graduated in 2018. It was a very challenging 4 years, between football (losing every game for 2 years), school, engineering, the culture. etc. A growth experience! What did your daughter major in?
@shanaber I looked on the website but didn't see the one on the box. They are really good. Here is the recipe:
@Avidkeo Thanks for the explanation....so interesting. The NYT had an interesting interactive thing about coughing and sneezing and covid.0 -

The thing is, humans do exactly that. My husband and I are practically hermits - we both work from home, have no children, most of our friends are long distance, we do most shopping online, and we used to go out three times a week to run on not very used trails and then eat at not very crowded restaurants, and once to the grocery, never at peak hours. Apart from races once a month, we used to always live like most people are living during lockdown. And we both got FOUR respiratory infections over the past winter. In all the cases I bet I could literally point to the exact rude numbskull who gave it to me! (Hint - probably the loud talking woman with a deep rattling chest cough sitting back to back with us in a restaurant booth 72 hours before we started having symptoms. It is always, always a woman, and she never covers her dang mouth.)
If we live through this, my hope is that American culture evolves to the point that going out in public while sick is ostracized, and the handshake is dead as a dodo. Especially the restaurant manager of a chain restaurant coming around to introduce himself handshake. Dude! I just sterilized my hands after using your grubby disease vector menu and applying bbq sauce with your disease vector bottle. Don’t shake hands with everyone else who is in the middle of wiping their mouth, then make me touch your hand, and then eat French fries with the same hands!
If it weren’t for the miracle of the immune system we would all be long dead.
@quilteryoyo Studies in Asian countries where mask wearing is common have found that wearing a mask reduces the chance of getting seasonal flu by more than half. So it does help some. Not enough when in close proximity with a person, but a mask will stop some droplets. I’m guessing that wearing glasses also helps.
FYI the incubation period for covid is usually shorter than two weeks, with many cases taking around five days between exposure and first symptoms. Some shorter, some even longer than two weeks.4 -

Answer, not really a help sorryHonestly I don't know the answer to that, very much outside my expertise! But one droplet contains hundreds, if not thousands of virus spores.1 -

Oh now that's interesting. I guess if it could potentially halve your risk... Sigh very complicated. My big issue is people treating masks like a salvation.1
