Runners that need some nutritional accountability

@RunsOnEspresso - I think you are well within the time frame to not need a tetanus shot but maybe you can do a tele-doc call and get some antibiotics? Doctor told me today not to be afraid to go to the ER if necessary, they are one of the cleanest places these days and the majority of people, pretty much everyone, is staying away.
@elise4270 - Your cats are so funny! Love that Beary wants you to go out in the woods with him. Hobbes does something similar, but he whines and whines to go out while sitting in the hallway looking at me. Mind you he has a doggy door and can go out on his own. He just wants me to take him out and walk out into the back yard with him. Usually he just wants to sniff and maybe eat some grass.
I have no advice on the weight other than just do what you can given the situation. I think the idea of cooking at home is a good one. We are trying not to order out more than once a week but still want to support our local restaurants. There is a Mediterranean place that I am going to vote for our next order out meal. Kabobs and pita!
I am thinking about all these nursing students doing the videos and cracking up imagining the professor watching all of them!
@quilteryoyo - mmm fresh sourdough bread! I saw a thing on twitter about how to make your own yeast/starter. The guy that posted it is a biologist who works with yeast! I really want to try it. In the split for anyone interested (it's long)...This was the entire tweet:
Friends, I learned last night over Zoom drinks that ya'll're baking so much that there's a shortage of yeast?! I, your local frumpy yeast geneticist have come here to tell you this: THERE IS NEVER A SHORTAGE OF YEAST. Here's where I'm a viking. Instructions below.
Scour your kitchen for any dried fruit: grapes, raisins, prunes, apricots. Fresh fruit works too, but it's best to leave it unwashed, and given our current situation this is probably not a wise thing to do unless you've grown the fruit yourself and trust it.
Take your fruit (or, if using fresh fruit skins--please use your judgmenet), pop it into a jar, and add a little bit of water to it. 2 or 3 tablespoons (30-40 mL) is more than enough. If you stir the fruit around, you'll notice the water gets slightly cloudy. That's the yeast!
You're well on your way. Add an equal mass of flour to this mixture. If you don't have a scale add enough flour to make a loose, wet dough. DON'T GET FANCY: old flour is fine. White flour is perfect (it's what I prefer). Doesn't have to be organic, doesn't have to be high gluten.
And then you wait. You'll want to keep this warm (but not hot). Hug it while you binge Netflix. Cuddle it while you yearn for human touch once again. Or put it on the counter while your dishwasher is running. Do it right and after 12 hours you'll see bubbles. These will grow.
YOUR YEAST ARE MAKING THOSE BUBBLES. Once the flour paste loosens up (24? 48 hours?), take a tiny bit of the fruit/flour/water mix, and add it to 30-40mL of water, add flour, and repeat. This time, it should come to life and those bubble should pop up much quicker.
It's closest I've come to witnessing spontaneous generation; it always feels like there's a bit of magic around whenever it works. And if it doesn't work the first time: 1) be patient and 2) try it with something different.
Don't be afraid to get creative. Try it with some old bread you have lying around. Or bread crumbs. There are old stories of Parisian boulangeries selling baguettes that were more old bread than flour to cut costs and stay afloat.
Just finish a lovely Belgian ale or were you drinking a bottle of wine with dregs at the bottom? Add it to some flour and water and see what pops up! Keep it mind, you'll be cutting your starter back quite frequently, so the original flavors won't be there when you finally bake.
What *will* be there is are yeasts from different sources that are ready to bring your bread to life! That's another thread for another time. Just remember: yeast is everywhere! Also: please wash your hands and stay away from other people. , your local frumpy yeast geneticist.
So had my tele-doc call with my doctor and she immediately brought up that it is probably time for the pacemaker. I have a call on Friday with the cardiologist unless he decides to call me before then. If pacemaker is the answer I am ok with that but I wish it could have waited until December when I am eligible for Medicare. My current insurance doesn't cover hospitalization or surgeries at all until the copayment/out of pocket is met for the year so it will be a hit of several thousand $$. She also told me no running or strenuous workouts until I see the cardiologist and no walks unless I take dh along. I think I may still go for a walk with Hobbes on the trail. Dh won't go that far with me but I am never without my phone and nowadays there are tons of people on the trail.
Food was ok. I made Kodiak muffins for breakfast (thanks @bearly63), had a tuna sandwich for lunch and a big salad and leftover flatbread pizza for dinner.
That yeast thing sounds cool! Hugs about the pacemaker, the timing sux.
Well I mostly stuck to the plan. There was cake and sweets at morning tea today and I indulged a bit, but stayes within calories. Then we had Indian takeaways for dinner, and I've ended the day about 50 over - I think.
The urge to snack on all the things is there, but I'm ignoring it and going to bed early.2 -
@shanaber - oh gosh, I'm sorry about the pacemaker. It seems like they should do some more tests first. I know you said it the other day, but still shocked with all your exercise that you need one. Cool on the yeast, but that sounds like a lot of work for me. I'm not a bread baker, well banana bread, yes!
The Hello Fresh dinner last night was 910 calories! I ate it all anyway. Usually, I might eat just part of it. I was 300 over yesterday and still was down .5 this morning - but this is just the weekend weight from cycling and having Indian takeaways. (using @avidkeo 's wording). Sounds more fun than "take out".
Ran a mile on TM with a Peloton warmup 10 min session. Then did a FitBod lifting session. Still want to do a ten min core w/Peloton Crush Your Core program but need to get working.

@Elise4270 Eating out kills my diet, unless I have control over the ingredients. Salt is the worst. And dressings, etc. The more you can eat in, cook and control what goes in the better. Maybe have a "cheat" day once a week and eat what you want. I don't enjoy cooking mainly cuz I hate dishes.
@quilteryoyo I got this idea that I would attempt sourdough but decided that I will try a basic bread first. From the NYT: https://cooking.nytimes.com/recipes/11376-no-knead-bread
@shanaber Yikes....don't want to mess around - but I agree, it would be great to be able to get the medicare to kick in. I copied your yeast thing. I have been able to score some yeast but no idea if its the right kind. Hope to try the above recipe soon.
Today is my 100th ride with Peloton - taking a live class. It's a HIIT class so I will die.
Food...had toast with PB just now. Maybe a big salad with chicken. Last night, pivoted and made Cauliflour stir fry with veggies and chicken. Its really good and pretty easy and you add whatever you have in fridge - I added broccolli, peppers and green onions, some chicken and a couple of eggs. A go to meal for us.1 -
@shanaber mmm thanks for the sourdough starter recipe. I will try it out. Regarding the pacemaker; sounds like a scary issue, be careful. Do you know if you 'll be able to do mild running or how it will effect your ability to run? We all just might have to buy a peloton bike. We'll definitely keep you in prayers an thoughts.
It's funny how our animals want us to do stuff with them. They need us and we need them.0 -
@Elise4270 I love that your cats knock on the door when they want your attention. Tippy doesn't knock, but she will stare at me through the window with sad eyes until I go out to let her in. Then, she'll run around the corner of the house, looking at me expectantly. Sometimes, I let her win and go play with her. Cooking yourself is a good idea. Restaurants put so much salt in stuff, especially their low calorie foods.
@shanaber That bread starter sounds like a fun experiment. I bet the preschoolers would enjoy doing that and then eating the bread that results. Hugs about the pacemaker. The timing does suck, but you will feel so much better once you get it. Dad got one and has done really well. He was told he could go back to doing normal activities, so you should be able to get back to running once you heal from the surgery.

Thanks all - I am hoping I might hear from the cardiologist before Friday but we'll see. They are all working different schedules these days because they aren't as busy as before. My PCP only 'sees' patients T-W-Th now and all of her staff work from home. I am really hoping to be able to return to normal activities, running, etc. and maybe I will even be able to improve my pace a bit 😁
@bearly63 - for years I tried making bread and always managed to kill the yeast or not get it started. Dd really got into bread making and taught me the wonders of Instant Yeast. It requires no 'just the right temperature' liquid you just put it in the mix with everything else. It works great. I have a no knead harvest bread I like to make with it. It is truly the easiest to use if you can find it.
It is foggy and cooler today, only supposed to hit 80. So I think I will take the pup out for a walk. I am hoping it stays nice for a while but they are saying the heat will be coming right back. I am a bit worried if it is this hot now, what's it going to be in July and August?
No food yet and no real plans. Has anyone made pitas before? I am thinking a tuna pita would be good for lunch but I have no pita bread... will probably be just another sandwich. I think we will have soup for dinner.2 -
Ahhhhh I'm up again this morning, 66.6kg. I think it was the Indian last night, though I didn't eat much. Maybe I underestimated calories? I do feel sluggish. I have also just started weight lifting again and have some mild DOMS so could be that.
Sigh.
Stick to the plan. Trust the process. Im just annoyed, I managed 2 weeks, then lost control a bit.
Right, april sucked so much. Was a complete mental challenge, therefore a eating challenge. May is my month.
So food today: coffee for breakfast. Yoghurt and fruit for morning tea. Tuna and Crackers for lunch. And home made fried rice for dinner.
PS I'm going to convert you all to some kiwiisms. So takeaways from now on bahahha3 -
@Avidkeo we plan to do takeaway Mexican tonight! Our neighbor own's the restaurant so we want to support them. I will sacrifice my diet to help people. That is just who I am.
@shanaber I think that is what yeast I found so great. Now I have to attempt the bread. I just searched on NYT cooking for Pita :
https://cooking.nytimes.com/recipes/1016071-homemade-pita-bread?action=click&module=Global Search Recipe Card&pgType=search&rank=2
3 -
@shanaber I missed the pacemaker part. I shouldn't read before coffee. I hope you don't need that! But if it helps.
Bread. I don't make it but I saw a recipe for depression era peanut butter bread. Keep saying I need to make it0 -
Yes! I think we all need to be hero's and sacrifice to eat takeaways from our local restaurants!
@bearly63 - Thanks I don't have a subscription to NYT so can't access the recipe. I did do a search also and found one too. It looks pretty easy so I think I will try it later today!
I took Hobbes for a walk and DH actually asked if he could come with us. He walked the neighborhood loop through all the cut-de-sacs and then headed back when we got to the Main Street and Hobbes and I headed to the trail. It was pretty empty for once which was nice but that may have been because it was so muggy out. Hobbes had to lay down 3 times on this walk to cool off. I think he just isn't used to the warmer temps yet even though it was only low to mid 70's but the sun was really warm.
Food: I have been snacking. Had banana bread before we walked, half a muffin and half a protein bar when I got home and then a bag of Skinnypop. I really just need to sit down and eat a meal.2 -
Update on my mexican takeaway. I made chocolate chip cookies for my DD as she was stressing about her ridiculous 7 page, 1 font, research proposal, which she now has to present in a zoom call to the class today, 1 week before the paper is due.
So instead of enchiladas, or fajitas, I ordered a salmon salad with beets and chimmichuri. It was really good and way healthier and paired well with the cookies.3 -
@bearly63 - 1 font? Is that a typo? That can't be legible! Chocolate chip cookies! Yum. That is my absolute favorite dessert.
@shanaber - LOL I know what you mean on snacking instead of a meal! Poor Hobbes doesn't like the heat!
Yesterday the doorbell rang and there was no one there but there was a big basket of fruit (kiwi, oranges, bananas, apples), chocolate and nuts! I figured out it had to be from the lady across the street. There are 5 teachers all within a few houses of each other so I hope she did it for all. So I ate 3 chocolate Lindt balls! Oh well, it's fine. I told DH to drop some of the fruit at MIL's door because I know we won't eat it all before it goes bad. That was so sweet. When I texted to ask her she said something like teachers rock. But honestly, the people who have little kids have it way worse than me. So sweet.
The Governor opened up part of the state. I didn't even read the specifics because I'm still not going out. I am waiting for Georgia in 2 more weeks to see what happens there. But good news that NY doctors figured out something that helps ease the virus!
Last night Sweet Potato fajitas and then ice cream at night. Same old thing for breakfast and lunch today.
Did 3 Peloton runs on TM this morning - 10 min warmup, 20 min intervals and 10 min cool down. I was going to do the core workout after that but I was drenched in sweat and my arms were moving so much on plank, I cancelled it and will do it later.

Morning.
@ddmom0811 awww thats so sweet about the basket! And I love those lindt balls. Mmmm.
There is a local cafe here doing $5 lunches for essential workers, so yesterday one of our nurses did a whip around to see who wanted one. Decided to support a local cafe, and ordered one even though I won't be at work till 3, it can be my dinner! I'm big on supporting local when I can atm. A lot of places have been awesome with supporting frontline. So go that to look forward to.
Jumped on the scale again, and no real drop, 66.5 - so down 100 grams. I think i should see a big drop tomorrow if my body does what it usually does... But I'm trusting the process (that's what I keep telling myself).
Now I am determined to may may a great month. One day at a time. I am going to get to 64 by the end of the month!
Plan for today - I'm working shift so 3pm - 11pm.
Breakfast - yoghurt, banana and coffee (done)
Lunch - smoked chicken pita
Afternoon snack/early dinner - cafe lunch
Dinner - Vietnamese beef Pho.
2 -
@ddmom0811 That's such a nice surprise. I love Lindt Balls too. Haven't had any in a long time.
@Avidkeo It's nice of your local cafe to do that for you all. Yes, May will be a great month. You've got this!

Well guys,
Despite hubby getting KFC for lunch, and the local Pizza Hut shouting the entire ED department pizza for dinner, I managed to stick to calories for the day!
I had 1 piece of chicken only, and only 1 slice of pizza (the smallest slice).
Yay!3 -
Weigh in this morning. Weight is going in the wrong direction. *sigh* I know what I *need* to do but I don't wanna. Lol3
-
@Avidkeo I'm impressed with your restraint! The pizza would have been my downfall.
@RunsOnEspresso You can do it!
0 -
@avidkeo - yay!
@RunsOnEspresso - one day at a time!
I've been about 300 cals over the last 3 days but weight is stable. I know that won't remain if I keep it up. But I am going to carb/pasta load today because tomorrow will be a bike ride. My cycling club posted something on Strava and facebook, that the group rides are cancelled until further notice. I had assumed that anyway. I guess when they first cancelled them they said until May 1 which I didn't even remember. I'm glad because I wouldn't want the pressure of questioning if I should go, when I know I shouldn't.
I remember reading in my fav book of all time "Younger Next Year", that to maintain muscle you should do strength training 2 days a week, to improve 3 days. I have trouble getting 3 days in with everything else I do. But this week was hoping to lift 3 days this week (MWF). So I lifted MW, but this morning I just feel too sore to lift, so not going to do it. (See I have a tiny bit of sense, lol).
However run streak continues. A slow 1.6 miles on TM with another Peloton run for my run streak, now on day 41. Even with that long streak, I only had about 88 miles in April because a lot of days I only do 1-2 when I bike or lift. But it keeps me someone sane during this time. Peloton arrives on 5/20!

You’re not alone. I ate Ben &Jerry’s last night. I just gonn have to get off my lazy keister and cook2 -
I made myself go walk around the backyard for my 15 minute morning break. I've been working through them all week. At work, I almost always walk my breaks and just move more during the day.
I try to strength train T/Th/Su to get my 3 days in. I've been getting in a session here and there. Gotta be more consistent!2 -
Morning guys, weekly weigh in today, 65.8 so a loss of 700g overnight (yay water weight dropped haha). I'm still up 900g on a week ago though sigh. Oh well ill get there.
About to go for a 16k run, and since I promised the kids we can bake cookies today, it's probably a good thing! These cookies are amazing and incredibly decadent, at 170 calories each!!
I also bought pizza home for the family for lunch. I think I'll let them have it all. Usually I love Pizza but I just don't fancy it atm. However will see how I feel at lunch time bahaha. 1 piece will be ok. Last night I had just had dinner when the pizza arrived! That's the only reason I was able to control myself lol.
I have no idea what I'm actually going to have for food yet, I'll plan the day after the run. I think I'll have pasta for dinner. Quick and easy.2 -
Hows everyone going today?0
-
Hi all: Hope your friday has been chill.
I was busy today, as its the first part of the month and that's when I'm busiest (commercial real estate accounting for a private investor)
Got a slow ride and core exercise in...was feeling sore and tired today. I really need to focus less on the cardio and more on the strength due to my crappy bones. I tend to be obsessed with burning calories and then let the strength stuff go by the wayside. I know that book @ddmom0811 . I think I read it back in the day. Maybe make a may goal to work out 3 days a week with strength.
Food? Good until dinner - then went to INnOut to get out of the house. So....not great.
Tomorrow I will do a light ride, some strength and get ready for another bike challenge on Sunday. And clean this house....what a mess.1 -
I lost another 0.8 pounds this week. Down to 138.4 (62.8 kg). Only three to go to reach my goal. It's exciting. I still have a couple pair of jeans I can't get into yet, which really surprises me. I feel like I'm actually smaller at this weight than I was the last time I was here, if that makes sense. At any rate, I'm happy.
I'm making the apple pie oatmeal for breakfast today. Not sure what the rest of the day will be. Probably a snack after my run and then something with chicken for dinner.2 -
@quilteryoyo That is fantastic. You just keep on going...consistency is the key. Lol...I have been using a pair of jeans that got really tight from about 10 years ago. They fit well now but the difference - they are really lower cut and my body, while being the same weight now that I was at 46, is not the same. A lot less muscle mass in the stomach. Damn menopause....or wine.....or.....who else can I blame?2
-
That’s great @quilteryoyo ! I know what you mean about being smaller at a return to a previous weight. I think the reason is muscle and redistribution of fat. I mean, I’m not smaller... but I understand. I think I’m bigger than, particularly in the boobs and arm pit... back too....
I ate fine yesterday, a strip steak and for dinner a can of Amy’s soup. I did snack intermittently on some popcorn. No cokes.
No plans today other than try to stick to it.
My shoulder is cranky. I’m looking forward to my return to the doc for another shot, mid May. Seems the steroid has worn off and it’s back to getting worse. Realizing that this affects almost exclusively perimenopause/ menopausal women, I google if there is a hormonal component to it. Well sure there is. So I decide to move forward on the HRT, er bioidentical hormone replacement. I phoned and they are closed... I think I can go Monday for blood work, if I get my studying done as scheduled an hopefully but Thursday get the hormones. Apparently it’ll also help my rosacea, which I’ve found out of desperation, responds to liquid Benadryl.
Add injury to injury. Wah wah
I went and sat at the picnic table with the outside cat yesterday with the lap top, studying. Decided I was poised for a break and cut some very small branches, really the tiny sticks that start to grow out, not more than finger diameter, with the bow saw. Have you ever used a bow saw? I love this thing. Sharp as shlt. I’ve cut myself with it before, no big deal, bleeds a lot, looks bad but is very superficial. Yesterday I touched the blade to my wrist, just above my watch inline with my thumb. It barely scratched me, just 2 tiny pokes that didn’t bleed. I wake today and find it stiff, red, swollen and tender to touch at the immediate tiny poke. Seriously? Check my last tetanus shot and it been 12.5 months. I think the universe is trying to kill me, or just torture me. Guess I’ll watch it for the day and if it doesn’t seem to be improving, I’ll go to convenient care. I feel like I have a fair share of ailments.2 -
Good grief @Elise4270 . You just can't catch a break! Hope the wrist gets better.0
-
Hugs @elise4270 No streaks or anything? Draw a line around the redness, and write the time you drew it. Then you can tell easily if it's improving or getting worse. I worry you might have got cellulitis and need some antibiotics.
@quilteryoyo yay about getting close! The jeans are annoying but fat distribution definitely changes!
I kept to goal yesterday, and lost another 600g of water weight overnight, so down to 65.2kg this morning. Whew. So back to the losing weight stage.
Today is a rest day, so I'm going for a walk and doing some strength before work at 3pm. Happy Sunday!3
