Runners that need some nutritional accountability

I think garmin gives so little because I do so little. My step count is usually 2200/day... wow slug. Yesterday I ended with 4300. It can’t tell that I was cutting trees and throwing brush into the ravine. I might as well be shopping, which isn’t the same expenditure. Obviously. What counts is that I was off the couch.
Back and shoulder pain made for horrible sleep. Poor lil Pookie Bear left me cuz I wouldn’t lay still. But did come back after an hour on the cat tree. Guess today is a couch day waiting to heal. Too bad cuz dh cut trees, (probably ones I wanted left) and he shooed me from helping so I didn’t know wat he cut, said he didn’t drag any of it. Maybe this afternoon I’ll be ok. It rained and I’d like to see how the drainage was affected.
I ate an extra 1000 calorie yesterday. But was stew, bread butter, and halo. So not bad. Oh and the English muffins. And a vegetarian quinoa bowl...
Today’s food?
Not sure. Dh left me half a muffin. No other plans. Maybe muffins all day. Or a coffee nap.
Any suggestions on the back. A swim in cool water wouldn’t be bad if that were possible. I havent taken anything. Figure rest rather than block the pain and make it worse. I might though. Taking a deep breath or laying on my back and breathing hurts. Which shallow breathing isn’t clearing your lungs and could set one up for pneumonia and now covid/sars. All the pain is muscle. Sure tomorrow I’ll be fine.
More Netflix. Shtisel.1 -
I ordered this for my home office chair. https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B0764HWFL3/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Anyone used it or similar? Reviews and people have mentioned that it's helped their back pain from sitting. I also get butt pain. I have extra pillows on it for my butt right now LOL I think I tend to get up more at work than at home. This past weekend I did no photography work because I didn't want to sit in my desk chair anymore!0 -
@ddmom0811 Nice workout room! Mine is in my basement, but all I have is a treadmill and Nordic Ski machine, which I don't use very often.0
-
@ddmom0811 great workout room. I need more weights and better organization. This motivates me!
@RunsOnEspresso That chair thing looks cool. I have been noticing my hip flare up when I sit for a while, and the pain travels down to my foot. Weird. Wonder if that thing would help? Let us know how you like it.
@Elise4270 Does the garmin use HRM to assign calories? You would def get a lot for cutting down trees and clearing brush. Sorry about the pain. I will often avoid meds when I am in pain because I worry about taking pills. Depends on the injury and how much sleep I am missing. Maybe icing and warm moist heat, intermittently.
@Avidkeo I never read the books. We started watching when the kids had left for college....not a show to watch with your children adult or otherwise. It is steamy to say the least. We got back into the new season recently. Pretty good so far. Jamie is still a hottie.
So yesterday, I must have failed at water because I noticed my (TMI Warning) urine was way too yellow, like highlighter yellow. And then felt like I was getting a mild UTI....couldn't sleep, that urge happening all night long. Sure enough, I have one. Doc is giving me antibiotics and will culture to be sure since I had one in Dec but did not even feel it. Came from my well woman visit. She is also sending me to an endocrinologist due to my stress fracture and osteopenia. Damn.....I am fighting this aging thing and it's winning. I really want to avoid bone drugs....I have heard bad things. Time to do some medical research.
Food : last night it was chicken and zucchini noodles with pesto and broccolli. Pretty good. Didn't tell DH it was zucchini. The sauce hides the difference pretty well.
Today - made a grilled cheese and Amy's veggie soup. Comfort food.
Did a ride and core work. Still need to find time for some lower body.1 -

I like the idea of that wobble seat! I've never not had pain sitting, even as a kid. So if back pain is something that you've lived with for a long time, it could be hip. Hopefully the core work sitting helps. Let us know. I may have to try it out.
@bearly63 yes the Garmin will use the HRM. It off to save battery which could be a contributing factor.
The back is getting better. Heat rest and chili dogs.1 -
@elise4270 and @runs_on_espresso I always recommend yoga for backpain. It really helps losen up and stretch sore muscles. You can find hundreds of videos in YouTube, yoga with Adriene and Sara Beth yoga are my favourite. I find if I'm starting to get backpain from sitting too much,Or DOMS, a couple of yoga sessions help.
@ddmom0811 love the room!
I did well yesterday, ended up with probably a 500 calorie deficit, I was busy at work, lots of walking around, but no watch so no idea. I would usually get an extra 100 calories for a busy day. So I'm sticking to what MFP says. Im earning exercise calories now but nothing else. I'm my rate of loss increases dramatically over the next week, I'll adjust. Today I'm 400g (1lb) down, but that wasn't a surprise as I've been in a small deficit for a few days.
I miss my watch. My wrist feels naked. It just feels wrong.
I'm heading into ovulation, which means my appetite is going to rage. I usually end up having a massive binge 1 day when I'm ovulating. I am NOT going to do that this month. I am in control. I'm going to keep telling myself that.1 -
I only get back pain in my home office chair. It's not ergonomic for me. It wasn't a big deal before because I wasn't using it every day for 8 hours. And it's been worse the last few days because my period arrived last night. *sigh*1
-
@bearly63 I hope you feel better soon. I hate UTIs! They are so annoying and can be very bad if not taken care of promptly. Glad you saw your doctor.
@Avidkeo I hope they get your Garmin back to you soon. I get the feeling naked thing. It's just not right to not have it on. I'm rooting for you to have the needed control to not binge this month. You can do it!!!
You know how I said I would be happy as long as I stay under 145 pounds. Well, I lied! Once I had a couple of weeks in the 130's, I'm really upset when my scale shows anything about 140. I was 140.6 this morning and was really annoyed.2 -
@quilteryoyo - ha! Yep that's how we all are!
@bearly63 - I had a couple years of non-stop UTIs. It has been a little better this year. I was convinced it was the cycling (80+ miles every weekend) but doctor said no, (TMI here too) it's sex. I didn't believe him. But after trying many different things and being on antibiotics practically nonstop for two years, he gave me these antibiotics I take every time afterwards. I felt so ridiculous getting the prescription filled -- the bottle says "take one after intercourse". The pharmacist has to come out and talk to me. And he looks at it says okay, there are 30 so this is a 30 day supply but you have refills. I said something like, "I don't think I will use these up in 30 days!". He said, "we only fill the prescriptions here, can't help you with that!" My little gym took several years to get to this point. Just keep adding a little at a time. I'm so thankful that I have it right now!
@RunsOnEspresso - never heard of that chair thing, let us know how you like it!3 -

Oh I get that. I keep telling myself I'm happy at 65, but now I've been 64.5 at my lowest, I'm bumbed everytime I go over it haha. 64.7 this morning so going in the right direction!1 -

Hahaha Sorry, but that is funny. If it helped, then I guess it was sex that was causing it. Weird. When I lived in FL, I did't get UTI's, but had the WORST yeast infections...to the point that the doctor would take a look and say, "You poor thing." They suggested wearing only cotton underwear, going commando when I could, using detergent with no additives like perfumes and such, and making sure I didn't set around in wet bathing suits, etc. It helped a lot. It was the humidity in FL, I think.0 -
Wow so many posts just since last night!
@ddmom0811 - I love your home gym! I have no machines, just some free weights and a set of adjustable weights w/plates that go up supposedly to 40lbs total. I also have a ball, a medicine ball (10lbs), a kettle bell (20lbs) and a workout step. I can do most of my workouts with what I have but wish I had a bench and maybe a squat rack. I use my daughter's old room (also my office) and there is not enough room for much else. With the virus now I kinda wish I hadn't joined the gym because I did it mostly for the classes and can't imagine going for that for a long while. I could have invested in building out more of a little gym here.
You would be amazed at how bad some of the dogs behave at agility and rally trials! The worst is when they don't have a recall and the owner (many very overweight) can't catch them or get them to come. I was always worried Hobbes would get excited, run up and pee on a judge. Fortunately that never happened with up but I have seen it with others!
OMG - laughed out loud about the pharmacist's comment 😂 so funny! I would have been mortified!
@RunsOnEspresso - when you start working with Shadow I would find a treat that she really really likes and only give it to her when you are working an activity. Hobbes LOVES string cheese. He only gets it when we are doing agility. If she knows she is going to get something she really likes she may be more willing to participate.
I haven't had experience with a chair like that but for a long time I sat on a fitness ball when I was working. It really helped my back and some issues I was having with my hip and glute. The only problem was my desk was too high for me to really type so I had to manage a different setup for my pc and keyboard.
@elise4270 depending on where your back hurts could you use a smallish ball to gently roll the area out by rolling against the ball along a wall? That way you can manage the amount of pressure? Or even the same thing with a foam roller against the wall?
Having the HR monitor turned off will definitely reduce the calories it thinks you burned. But like you said the most important thing is you got up and moved!
@avidkeo - I need to try more yoga. I always feel so stiff and awkward when I do it though. I guess if I did it more I would get better at it. I also hate not having my watch when I had to get it fixed/replaced. I ended up carrying around my phone all the time and I hate that too.
@bearly63 - oh wow that is bad on your pee being so dark! It is really hard on your kidneys. I am glad they diagnosed the UTI so quickly and got you started on the antibiotics! Maybe the appointment with the endocrinologist will determine if there is something else off (thyroid) that could be impacting your bone density? I didn't even know for a very long time that hypothyroidism can cause bone loss and I have been on thyroid meds pretty much all my life.
@quilteryoyo - I am the same way! You'll get back down there! Glad they solved the yeast infection issues. They can be miserable.2 -
Omg @ddmom0811 I would have been mortified with that pharmacists conversation.
@bearly63 sounds like it may be time to weigh the good and bad with the bone drugs. It’s not uncommon in older than you folks and those with osteoporosis to break a hip and lose mobility, wheelchair bound. I dated a guy who’s dad fell, broke his hip and lost so much bone in the repair process that even his dentures never fit again. He never walked either. So look far enough ahead that you are managing what matters.
Thanks for the back suggestions. It hurts from bottom of my shoulder blades down and front ribs to diaphragm. Bear wanted me to hold him and that was a feat with a not so graceful ballerina squat to scoop him up before he climbed me. I think by tomorrow I’ll be better.
I’m up 2 pounds today, suppose it’s inflammation.2 -
@Elise4270 - any chance you could have cracked or broken a rib? It sounds similar to the area that would be painful and also the hurting when breathing...

I thought about that. I have no pain pushing on my sides. Pushing on back muscles just causes spasms. It is easy to irritate anyway with the hip being wonky.1 -
Ugh I started a reply but got a call I had to answer and it disappeared. 😭
Shadow loves all foods & treats. Hahahaha She is hit or miss with recall. She knows it but she chooses when she will listen. She also loves being chased and has gotten out a few times. We learned to say you want a treat? Or you want a chewy? And she goes right inside.
I'll let you all know about the chair thing. It should be here by the end of the week. So this weekend might be the test. Or next week.1 -
Anyone else super stressed by grocery shopping these days? I spent my whole day getting stuff for myself and my mom and I am just over the entire process of shopping during covid. We get pickup, but then they don’t bother getting half the stuff and my husband has to go in anyway. And the stuff is just right there on the shelf, no reason they couldn’t have gotten it! Also the kid who loaded the back of the car was wearing a mask - over his mouth only. My husband gave him his best NCO look and said, “That mask isn’t doing either one of us any good with you wearing it like that,” and the kid pulled it up. And then actual shopping in the store takes my husband forever because people stand there in the middle of the aisle like their brains just stopped. Of all the weird things for them to be out of, this week it’s butter. Left the house at 4, didn’t finish shopping until 9 pm.
Had bacon and eggs for dinner and ate ALL the bacon.
Re: UTIs and yeast. Used to have constant problems when my diabetes was undiagnosed. Not so much now. All kinds of stuff likes to live on excess sugar. My acne almost disappeared after getting my glucose normal, too.3 -
@rheddmobile - we have found going grocery shopping first thing in the morning is much better. Not nearly as many people in the store and it is freshly cleaned and restocked from overnight. Not sure about other areas but our store also implemented oneway aisles. People mostly get it but others are just oblivious. You do have to wait though while people figure out what they want to buy. I usually watch to see if they are grabbing and moving on and if not I got to the next item on my list and come back to that aisle later.
I am also still not going more than once a month if at all possible.
Heard tonight that LA County is talking about safer at home for 3 more months even while they open up parks and trails and shopping for curbside pickup! We are in a neighboring county so it will be interesting to see what our county decides.
Leftover lasagna and salad for dinner but I followed it up with vanilla ice cream with strawberries. yummmm! Still ok on calories and my macros so the treat was worth it - every.single.bite!3 -
@shanaber I haven’t been lucky enough to get a pickup time early morning, and even with them not getting half our order, shopping the whole trip in store requires so much more time, even first thing in the morning. Plus all the oldsters (aka morning shoppers) here are a billion times worse about social distancing. Like, aggressively not social distancing. Ugh.
We made it two weeks last trip, but it’s difficult with our tiny fridge and pantry!1 -

Snap, I also had left over lasagne! So good.
We don't have issues here with groceries, after the first couple of weeks people have finally become sensible and it's basically back to normal. That said, there are only allowed to be 100 people in the store at a time, so that helps lol.
Ended the day under calorie goal again. Yay. And ate dinner a bit later than usual as I had a later shift at work. Now stuffed! Going to have a cup to chai tea, a hot shower and then I'm going to bed. So tired.

We went Sunday morning. I wanted to get out of the house & finally had a mask. Nope, not doing that again. Our store didn't have one way aisles (some do around here). No one was practicing social distancing. People were completely oblivious that others were shopping and maybe wanted to go past them or grab something from the shelf. I'd say half were wearing masks correctly. I saw couples were only one was wearing a mask. I saw a dad without a mask but his kid had one. I saw an employee with her mask down and when she saw me notice her she shoved it over her face.
There were some empty shelves but it was mostly cheap *kitten* I can't eat (raemen, chef boyarde type things).

The bruise
Luckiy I haven't been shopping. But that means DH buys bachelor food. The Walmart pickup had potential to help lots of folks, its a joke. Like you @rheddmobile they don't get what you ask for and some of the substituted items are withoit thought, like vegetable broth and they sub bone broth. I know there is other brands of veggie broth. Someone told me that they are timed, sure that doesn't mean they can't do a fair job.
I watched another show (or same show again) claiming the benefits of more veggies and less meat, dairy and eggs. It all sounds like sound research, but I may be to lazy to change. I'm still thinking on it, I really need to get back to doing better. I need to make a grocery list, but now I definitely don't wanna go. I can get nerdy an plan a months of meals like when the kids were young. But Walmart is ... Not the place I wanna be. Here they loosened the stay at home and everyone is out just in masks. We had 2 cases I think. Too bad, cuz parts of me wish they all er.. not nice... Well.. people. I can do without so many of them being stupid and in my way, then I have to play nice.
Back is 85%. I can probably do some walking (flat ground) to work it out more. Shoulder is still poop. I'm still fat.😄 Hormones tomorrow and I have an appointment for my "sure it's cancer" spot on my leg. And Friday, thank g-d, a shoulder shot. No word from leg-bone surgeon. Suppose I'll phone Monday. Fall semester I'll have an 8-12 hour clinical one day a week. Sure to be miserable if I'm not healed up from surgery. 8-12 hors on crutches? I'd be a kitten for sure.
Can ya tell I'm still so grumpy from chronic pain? Might be time for some Tylenol.2 -
Hope this link works. It's a good representation of the conversation we had yesterday? Day before? Can't recall. If it doesn't, it's on the iweigh FB page and Instagram (probably twitter too but haven't been on yet).

I plan to respond properly but I have to go into work (first time in 2 months) - granted its just my boss's home office but it will be weird. Just have to say thank you to @ddmom0811 for the belly laugh today. Your "post-coital prophylactic" antibiotics story got me giggling. I would be embarrassed too. Good for your pharmacist for having a sense of humor. Can't they just say "as needed" since you would know when that was? Lol....I am still giggling.1

Morning guys!
@RunsOnEspresso so so so true. Even in NZ there is systemic racism. Its hundreds of small things every day that adds up to a huge thing. I certainly speak up when I hear these systemic things get mentioned, "but it's not about race" 🙄 I grew up poor, on the benefit (social security) with a single mum. No one ever judged her, they supported her. See a woman of colour in the same situation, then the judgement comes out. Drives me nuts.
@elise4270 wow that's impressive! I'm sorry you are having such a hard time, chronic pain is definitely the worst!
Still doing well. Increasing my carbs a bit the next couple of days so will probably see a bump in the scale, but today in half a lb abovey lowest! Feeling good and positive. Keep this up, I'll get my goal by the end of the month!3 -
I did better in my do better goal! Ran 2 errands, walked an hour, picked up Walmart order, even cooked a vegetable dish for supper. And practiced violin. Yay me!, adulting.5
-
@elise4270 - yay!!! Good job. One day at a time, adulting!
@RunsOnEspresso - that is a really good link. We have a club at school called African American something or other. I will try to download it and share it with the sponsor. Though I know a lot of seniors were leading the club and sometimes clubs fizzle out when the leaders leave.
If you ladies want an even more embarrassing moment from me related to that med, when the urologist told me about it (and by the way he is the cutest doctor!), DH and I were leaving for a cruise to Barcelona the next week. So he says you take one after sex. Knowing how we get on cruises (TMI, lol), I asked him, but what if we have sex twice in one day? Only take it once! Okay, what if we have it at night and then again in the morning? Would the one at night cover the morning? Just once a day! He must have thought what is with this old lady!?? But he had stressed that it is a very strong antibiotic and how you don't want to take it too much, so I was trying to be sure I knew what to do with it! That was the best cruise, and glad we took it because now I doubt we will for many, many years.
My Vitamix arrived today! Studying the manual and wanting to go to grocery store to buy things for it! Especially for the margarita!
Good on food today! I had an egg mcmuffin for breakfast - but I don't get the ham since I'm vegetarian. I don't think an Egg McMuffin is that bad for me. I had to go to school - wanted to print something on the 3D printer for my seniors in AP Comp Sci. I am going to have to keep rushing back the next 3 days to get them all printed. No one is there and very eerie walking in my classroom and dark hallway.
Usual salad for lunch and then a Hello Fresh Crusted Chickpea Tabouleh Bowl. So good, it's a little high on calories - 800. But I had run and lifted today so decided I needed it.
4 -
@ddmom0811 So funny about the doctor and the cruise! Great job on the food.
Glad you are feeling some better @Elise4270 .0 -
@ddmom0811 I love egg McMuffins. Not crying about my childhood; there was a short time my mother worked at night, all night... and left my brother and I with her sister. When my maternal parent came to get us just before dawn, if she made enough that night, we’d get egg McMuffins. I thought they were the greatest things ever. Still do. I was probably 9.
——— - — - - -
I am trying to 100 days of violin and started over twice this week already. So understanding my limitations some; I decided to add 100 days of more veggies, 100 days of studying, (violin/music theory- which I don’t get at all, stuff for next semester, anything really, german), 100 days of exercise.... yadda yada, you get the idea. Put it in my planner and started a journal for the violin to hand in come August.
Was a bit hungry after my veggie dinner and made a kale, banana, avocado, blueberry, ginger smoothie. Look who’s still the adult at 1030pm. ☺️
I feel pretty good. But will admit to taking 3.5 Tylenol’s today. Haha!3 -
I bought ice cream at the store Sunday. I am currently using it to cool down after my speed work. 🤣3
