@MegaMooseEsq They just opened a Popeyes here about a month ago. I still havent been.

Dh said he had a coworker buy 45$ worth of chicken, stopped to get drinks at the convenient store, and someone stole it. A week after they opened, i guess there was a walk out and they were hiring off the street. New places here get super busy at first, so idk if its management or the dodo's they hire.

I have to go at some point. Anthony Bourdain would have wanted me to.

Thanks @travelling_lots - when we went north initially we knew there were ongoing fires in the area. The Redding area unfortunately has been hit hard in the past month or so with fires including one of the largest in state history. Southern Oregon has also been hit so it is generally a smokey mess. There were signs along I-5 to be cautious of the fire danger and that there were reports of active fire in the area. We did not see any though. We heard about the closure while we were in Oregon and made alternate plans and then they setup a couple of detours. Traffic wasn't terrible although the routes are 2 lane winding mountain roads and if you got stuck behind a big rig it was so slow! Fortunately they build in occasional passing lanes which helps a lot. Today we are heading to the CA coast so will be out of the smoke and fire area.

@MegaMooseEsq - I hate fire season. We get them in So CA too and they are scary even though where we live is not really in any danger. My BILs house burned to the ground a few years ago (rented at the time) and it was devastating.

@Elise4270 - I can't believe someone would steal a bag of Popeye's! Have not seen any runner's or anyone really out walking even. I took Hobbes for a long walk when we came through on the way north and people were looking at me like I was crazy... Also it was very hot and the hotel is in an industrial park area which could have been why too.

I think the issue for me is fried food in general just seems so heavy and I don't think it likes me much either... I pretty much never eat it. I am looking forward to better food choices today and a run through the canyon in Santa Ynez tomorrow morning!

I liked Raising Cane's chicken when I could eat it. Now I can only have chic-fil-a grilled.

@RunsOnEspresso - they recently opened one near us and the lines were crazy long so we haven't tried it yet.

@Shanaber It's one of those simple menu places and the sauce is YUMMY! Plus they have a dog as their mascot-thingy. LOL

I totally never knew Bourdain was a fan of Popeye's - I just like it because it's not greasy, and also the biscuits are (IMO) perfect. I'm going to have to try their Mac and Cheese now!

Ya. He loved Popeyes in Atlanta. One of his producers mentioned it after his passing, how he'd get that look, "We're going to Popeyes now, right?" As soon as they touched down every visit.. haha!

@shanaber Oh I’m so glad you guys will be out of that area soon. And made alternate plans before hand.
This foreum moves very fast. Hard to keep track and I keep missing things, but you gave me a fright and it was the first thing I read this morning.

I feel for the people there horrible situation BC has them a lot too.
I’m just scared of things when Mother Nature is involved hard to predict and control.

Snacks- you mentioned they are always great. I’m impressed you take carrots. I never have but a good one.

I wasn’t aware of Hobbes, yes that would mean extra stops but look at all that love and great company :-). Extra stops are always good. Great car mileage.

I’m relieved reading your post. Safe driving.

@Elise4270 wow! That’s too bad about the bag of Popeyes. I don’t eat any fast food, last Burger King was in grade 12 with the guys after a car rally. but junk food that’s a different matter. I couldn’t sleep growing up used to go out get some st the corner gas station with my dad. Got home stuck the bag under the pillow and ate everything till I fell asleep and woke up with the gum somewhere in my hair. Reason I don’t chew gum anymore unless I’m driving across Canada when I’m awake.

In'n'Out is one of the things I miss the most about California. Probably for the best that we don't have them nearby!

I saw one in Denton Texas on my last visit. I've yet to try it. Definitely on the list now! We have five guys. They alright. I liked Smash Burger pretty good.

I don’t like Five Guys all that much - the thing with In’n’Out is that it’s still fast food. Five Guys is in that weird “fast gourmet” category at which point I’d really just prefer a juicy medium rare burger served at a table with a napkin and a beer.

I ate horribly today. It wasn't good. I am upset and ate cake for breakfast and candy for lunch. Which of course makes me more upset. *sigh* It's a vicious cycle.

I have been bingeing this weekend. Sigh. Stress because my ankle still feels off, though I think the pain is gone.

    Start fresh in the morning.

@travelling_lots - thanks for asking, we are well out of the fire danger area. In one of our favorite wine areas that also happens to have a great dog park and some awesome running areas. I won't get to any of my favorite running routes this trip but we did go to the dog park this morning until it got too hot.
    6xxmbcqjnxcu.jpeg

I feel like we have done nothing but eat... nothing really terrible (other than fried herb tater balls that were SO delicious!). We get a full breakfast with our room at the hotel so bacon and eggs and part of a waffle. Then we got a cheese and fruit box from Starbucks to share while wine tasting and tonight we went to a brewery to watch the Packers football opener and I had one of those 'sit down' burgers and a couple of 'taster' beers (2oz).

I won't have time to go out for a run tomorrow as we need to head out before noon to get through LA and home before the traffic gets bad and we want to take Hobbes to the dog park to romp a bit before sticking him back in the car for hours. I am going to try to get a few miles in on the treadmill early though. We'll see if I can get out of bed to get it done!

I think this weather has a lot people doings things we seem to be thinking about later.

I too ate and over ate. Had 9 perogees with almost half 125 g of 5.5 % sour cream. And that’s extra from my dinner :-(

That’s excellent news your in a different area and safe. And finally enjoying your holiday. Unfortunate about the running but not bad if your enjoying the winery sections. Love the photo of Hobbes he too is having fun now.

I guess your the passenger? Always wondered how they must feel in long drives.
As a driver no matter how much you eat the driving part seems to give it a different perspective. Because trust me I eat a lot as a driver too :-)
Tatar balls I’m guessing are the same as tater gems. Oh my goodness they are heavenly and I can eat them with no ketchup if their warm by the bags full.
Starbucks has great meal boxes. My favorite too and those green power salads.
Good idea there is always the treadmill. But it’s holidays if it doesn’t happen I would be happy my holiday is a safe one!

Love the brewery portion of your trip. Now, we seem to be having fun. :-)

    I’m glad it’s taken a good turn.
    Happy travels!

Weathers changing so we're adding some calories? Hmm. Definitely time for some low calorie soups, hot tea and a bit of disapline.

We got this week. Do better!

Ugh. My work pants are a little tighter than normal. Guess that's what happens when i eat a whole bag of Cheetos and have ice cream. Then i tweaked my back lifting a gas cylinder.. boo. Hopefully it'll work out by the end of day.

    What's for lunch?

    Think tacos here....

I think lunch might be PB&J - my husband made lunches. I have butternut squash simmering in chicken broth in the crock pot at home for dinner. I'll pick up some spicy sausage to add to it on the way home.

I have my usual lunch of meat, cheese, fruit and veg. Kind chocolate breakfast bar for afternoon snack. Chicken something for dinner.

Those kind chocolate breakfast bars are my favorite. I wish they came in costco sized box 😂
