Runners that need some nutritional accountability

Pumpkin chocolate chip muffins for first day of school recess.
Pumpkin all over my kitchen because I'm a messy cook LOL2 -

Food today?
Hmm, I had coffee so far. I'm a tad hungry. With the long US weekend i topped my week off with 28 miles of running (including some walking). That's 10-12 miles more than usual, so I'm anticipating being hungry. My knees/ITB have almost recovered and i may do an extra slow run/walk today. Its so muddy, a bike is out since i only have the mtn bike with me. A muddy run in the gravel is aggravating so... 🤷
So. Long/short.... I need some sustenance! Haha! I need a plan before i grab a pizza pizza.1 -
I've been awful at logging. Starting again today! I logged breakfast. I'll log lunch when I eat it. Lol2

Nice, hope you had a nice long weekend. I had a nice time too upgraded the phone and almost got killed by a stupid driver. He cane out of the gas station. He missed me by inches. He came from right 4 lanes over. I was turning left. Jack *kitten* goes and cuts me off I hit the horn so hard just so incoming traffic doesn’t hit him and throw him into me.
Plus maybe the horn will also wake the guy behind me and doesn’t rear end me because I braked to give jack *kitten* room to keep driving through. Close one!
Good thing for peri feral vision or definitely big accident.
What was your long weekend holiday did you guys have?
I was in same boat about eating. So I had a vanilla protein shake with couple mango pieces. I’m still good1 -
I had 3 pumpkin chocolate chip muffins today. Oops. They were super yummy though (homemade on Monday).
Other than that, been mostly good. We made lentil soup that turned into stew because not enough broth. Red lentils, wild rice, peppers, onion, portobello mushrooms, and a bit of leftover ham. Plus garlic chicken broth. Turned out really tasty!3 -

That sounds so delicious!
I love lentils. I normally make lentil soup and top it off with feta cheese before serving.0 -
I finished logging yesterday this morning. Probably more calories than I should have had due to a week off from working out but under my workout goal LOL
Back at it again today. I ran today so I can aim for my goal.
I bought these oatmeal bites from Costco yesterday. They are sooooo tasty. They taste like sugar. Haha3 -
I can't find the link anymore but someone in here shared a weight training website. I think it was @MegaMooseEsq . I'd love if you shared it again!0

We are still traveling. I am trying to eat well and I ran today (lovely 58F!!). However we went to Tillamook Creamery today and there may have been grilled cheese and mac and cheese and of course ice cream! DH wanted pizza with football tonight but since I don’t typically eat pizza I ordered street tacos (channeling @Elise4270) with pulled pork and a salad. We are also having to rearrange our plans since a fire has Interstate 5 shutdown. Hoping it will be open by Saturday otherwise we will have to go the long way around along the coast and it will take for ever!
ETA - @sarahthes I love pumpkin chocolate chip muffins too! I used to make them or just plain pumpkin muffins for my daughter’s class and the kids all thought they were cupcakes!1 -
@shanaber My husband and I drove the Oregon coast to California before we were married and it was amazing but it is definitely a long drive! Hope your travels aren't hindered and I-5 opens before you need to travel on it.1

Still travelling? Isn't that part of the fun? I love driving. So many things to see and learn, but your right eating right is extreamly hard when your on the road. More so I think with a family. Hard to control things.
I used to pack a cooler with pre made salads, cold meats, lots if chopped veggies and fruit and yet
Every time I pulled over to get fuel, I picked up caramel popcorn, twisted popcorn, beef jerky, and my fun candy since I was a kid "fun dip" bubble yum and made bubbles til it lost the sugar and put in a new piece till the entire pack was done.
Then I went for the twisted popcorn it's salty yummy. Bag was finished and went for the beef jerky. Then closed that episode with the caramel popcorn.
Now, the fun dip you asked?
Well, I gassed up did my purchases and pulled the car out to safe side of the gas station and took my time sitting on the cars hood while I checked out the sky in the day time or the stars at night while I ate fun dip candy.
Every gas station attendant must of thought I was off my rocker.
Way I look at it, life is short if you don't enjoy the moment. ...why do we bother doing things.
Plus I've driven alone the whole time, every time so these crazy things were my fantastic and will never forget as part of my adventures.
So how many times did I do this? Every time I gassed up. Thank goodness crossing the prairies my car did 700 km before next gas up. So not too many calories.
Now, where abouts are you driving now? And where is your next stop? I can probably tell you things if you like if not helpful, atleast they're stupid and good for a laugh. I've driven up to 8 times in one year from a Toronto to Vancouver B.C. In different seasons in both directions.
Just please drive safe, remember to always pull over and rest close your eyes at least if you don't nap. It really helps.

Ok I cant edit my post to add the link for the fun dip. Keeps saying.
You need the vanilla, comments, permission to edit. I have no clue !!
So here is the link. Lol

LOL! @travelling_lots Fun dip is still a thing here. I dont think I've have fun dip in ages. As an adult my travel snack was those Combos and a diet coke. I'd moved on to Starbucks Americano, maybe some gum. Which I'm not currently allowed to have since I eat it. I'm so irresponsible with gum... the texture is fun.1

Friday! So tired today.
I'm waiting on DH this morning. He's having a colonoscopy...
Catching up on mfp and this complimentary "coffee"... Eh.. I'm so picky. I wanna lay down.
Im hoping dh takes me out to ihop for breakfast. Not that i care for their food, but it solves the hunger problem. If i choose decently, i should be alright. It always gives me diarrhea...
Eta Jeebs... Old people.. I'm not a people person .. haha.. c'mon DH... I've been here 9 minutes. The "news" is on. Such crap. And the people are just sopping it up. I'm so tired.2 -

Great minds think alike.
Didn’t write down Starbucks since it’s the thing I do on the road , at home going to work at work. Yup big time Starbucks here. So it doesn’t count for me as a once in a blue moon kinda thing.2 -

I've been chugging along with the logging and dieting - I feel like I'm back in the groove, and I hit a new low today, so that's awesome! I have no idea what to eat before a half marathon, though, so I guess I'll just play it by ear? Maybe the same thing I eat in the morning before my usual runs, only a little more? My long runs are about half in the AM and half in the PM so I haven't thought too hard about fueling.2 -
I just had a pumpkin spice ice capp... I don't want to look up the calories haha. Tasted like cake.2

I usually do peanut butter toast. Depending on how long it takes you may need to fuel during the race - I am slow enough that I need nutrition. Have you trained with what they have at the aid stations? That may be the easiest way to handle it.0 -

Nope! I have never consumed anything during a run aside from water. I've never felt the need for food during any of my long runs - up to 9 miles and 115 minutes so far. I expect to have a slightly better pace given my familiarity with the course, but of course, there's five more miles to run. My guess is about two and a half hours. The website says the aid stations will have water and powerade but doesn't mention anything else.0 -

I never understood how people could eat or use gels on runs. I had to stop eating light meals 5 hours before a fun or I'd be really sick.0 -

I use Clif shot Blox and Nuun when I run. Honestly I can tell when I need them. I can run for 2 hours fasted pretty easily, at least in normal terrain, but I get bad leg cramps even with electrolytes after about 2:15 (so far anyway). On trails I need stuff sooner. Also temperature & humidity dependent.
The only gels I've tried made me gag though.2 -

Ok. I copied that into my notes. So when I'm out jogging long distance I'll have those handy. But I'll give them a try before that to see if like them or how I react to them.
Thank you!0 -

For me I take something around an hour for half marathons. So I do a gel around mile 4-5 and again at 8-9. Everyone is different though and needs to experiment. Some people never take anything. I never do for 8-9 miles. But if I hit double digits I need the energy boost. This summer I've had to take energy around 3 miles because of the heat.1 -
@megamoose - I have found it best for me to have something before I need it. If I wait until I am feeling it, by then it is too late. So for a HM a have a couple of Shot Bloks or Skratch chews around mile 3 (or nearest water station) again at 6 and 9. But, and this is the important part, you need to train with it and see how you react/feel. I discovered that I really need to have water with whatever I have - in the middle of a HM when no water was available. Not a good time to find this out but now I know!
@travelling_lots - we have snacks(popcorn, beef jerky, carrots, etc.) and stop along the way, especially since the pup needs to get out once in a while. Our car can go about 600 miles on a tank of gas so the limiting factor is typically me or the pup and not my husband. Starbucks and Panera are our favorites it we can find them.
Today was interesting. There is a fire that has closed I-5 in CA close to the OR border. We missed the start of it by maybe an hour going north although saw lots of fire activity along the freeway so who knows. Coming back today we had to route around about 2 hours worth of winding mountain roads with lots of big trucks and other folks. I have done well with my food until today.. Starbucks strawberry scone for breakfast (ate the entire thing where I usually eat only half if that) and KFC for lunch/dinner - I realized that I really dislike it which is good but I ate it because I was so hungry 😩 Tomorrow will be a better day! At least food wise. There will be no running again until Sunday.2 -

@shanaber am I understanding this correctly? Your in this area?

@shanaber I also found this. Not sure how much access you have for info. I won’t post anymore since not sure if any of this useful.
Drive safe. Try to keep wet towel close to your face when breathing. If heavy smoke to give your lungs a break.
Thanks for the reply. I-5 is still listed as closed by Caltrans. We took 36 out of Red Bluff towards the 101. We'll continue up the 101 to the 199 which will cut us back over to the 5 just outside of Medford, Oregon. Thanks for the input
——
This from a reply sep 7 0210 am
CHP just reported I-5 will not reopen this afternoon due to fire behavior. Highway 36 is the absolute worst option for cutting over from I-5 to 101. If coming from the south, use Hwy 20 or 299.
***Not sure which way your
heading but I found this too***
Many are using highways 3 or 299 east to Hwy 89 then back to I-5. Traffic on these roads is horrific with a number of jackknifed big rigs on 299 and 3 today. You would be wise to reschedule travel if possible.
I feel bad for you guys your holiday. I’ve gone through similar stuff driving through winter storms across canada getting stuck after highway closures but I was that point. So can be very nasty.
Drive safe guys.!0 -
We bought stuff for pumpkin curry soup, with or without chicken. And white bean chill inspired soup.
The weather has turned. Its been rainy and looks like today is going to be 70-80 (21-26c), and horrible humidity.
I have roast still .
@shanaber My dads ashes are in Redding. Give him wave as you pass through. I have a half sister somewhere there 18 years younger.... Stephanie. She'd be 30ish. I bet shes a runner. So just wave at any runners (oh i bet none are out in the fire). Eh. Safe travels. We eat kfc occasionally. It okay. So greasy. Think theyd do better if they offered some healthier options, maybe some real taters...
I wanna run today after several rest days. My garmin finally says "productive". It has been in a constant state of "recovery". For weeks. Anxious for the coolness. 10 miles start calling.
Eat healthy my friends. Your body deserves it, with all you ask of it.

The only fast food fried chicken I like is Popeye's, and that's definitely a sometimes thing! I grew up in Northern CA and remain fairly afraid of fire. People in Minnesota look at me like I'm bonkers, but the last house fire in our neighborhood happened in the middle of winter, so be careful, people!
Eating at maintenance today with the half tomorrow AM. Thanks for all the great tips. I suppose this is one area where nothing beats experience so I'm just going to have to see what happens. If I make my 9 mile target I should be fine to finish by the cut-off even if something unforeseen happens from lack of food and I end up walking towards the end. I'll probably start experimenting with various things on my long run next week so I'm better prepared for the half in October.2
