For many many years I was on a cat bulletin board. It's mostly died off now. I started getting concerned that it might disappear so every day I've been doing a search and printing off all the messages about one Dubbs cat. I've now just got 2 cats to go. (Then I think I might do emails; my email has for decades been with earthlink; should it disappear I'd lose a lot there, too).

Anyway, I'm taking a lot of trips down memory lane finding some old photos. Here are our first three cats Linus (white girl), Beethoven (black girl) and Reggie Jackson (tabby boy).

I also stumbled on a pretty decent scan of CROM's logo. It was designed and donated by the artist Sherry Shipley (she still sells on ebay although her stuff now looks totally different from what I've got hanging on my walls here). This scan is good enough that I think you can see the usually hidden message along the rim of the garbage can ("In memory of my beloved Beethoven.")

Beethoven was the first cat we ever lost. I call CROM a memorial run amuck.

Very nice logo. I never knew what CROM stood for. Our girls came from a rescue organization called CLAWS. Cats Lost and Needing Rescue. The animal control officer ran it from her home for a number of years. It became too much for her and she had to close it but it was a great organization while it lasted.

Yeah, Cat Rescue of Maryland, Inc. is a really creative name. Not! LOL!

The worst part is it doesn't refer in any way, shape or form to our TNR work so it confuses some folks. But it's been our name since January 1993 so it's not changing now.

Beethoven died in October 1992. Our first loss and a cat I adored. I took it hard. At that point "my" colony was all spayed and neutered (I fed there daily for a decade after that until the last cat was gone). I never intended to do anything more. However, some folks from the cat bulletin board had been bugging me to come to their apartment complex. So I went over to get a litter of kittens in memory of Beethoven. That day I chased a black cat away from the trap because I was after kittens. I ended up going back to finish the job (and that black cat became our late Holly Berry and her brother our late Rossi (my best friend took Martini)). By January 1993 I had decided it was professionally embarrassing that I couldn't deduct the money I was spending. I took a file off the shelf at work where someone in the tax department had set up a nonprofit and essentially just copied it. It worked but with a glitch or two. E.g. we'll never have a paid employee but because I was copying from the set up of a non profit that did have employees I have to call in $0 employee withholding every 3 months. I've always been too busy to spend time trying to figure out how to undo that. LOL!

Anyway, a memorial run amuck or as someone said once a memorial that - GASP - turned into an organization.

That’s an amazing story. I give you credit for sticking with it so many years. Any idea how many cats you’ve rescued over the years?

We keep a spreadsheet each year of "cats helped". Because we do TNR, what we do for many cats is not so much "rescue" as it is spay/neuter and then feed/provide shelter on an ongoing basis. I only put them on the spreadsheet when we spay/neuter them (the ongoing commitments for food and shelter I don't count). We "help" anywhere from 100-200 cats a year.

Well, my voice is slowly returning. I’m still very hoarse, but at least I can speak above a whisper now. I still have a little cough, but overall my cold seems to be gone.

I got my flu shot yesterday while out running errands, and today I got partial highlights on my hair, so I think I am just about ready for my beach trip next week. I am going for 4 days to Rosemary Beach, FL to celebrate one of my friends’ 60th birthday. She invited 8 of her longtime friends to join her at the beach in a house she rented for the occasion. I leave Wednesday morning and return Sunday. It should be a really good time and I have been looking forward to it for a whole year, since she gave us a heads up last year that this is what she wanted to do for her birthday. We always celebrate the “round” birthdays with a girls’ getaway to the birthday girl’s choice of location.

I had my cardiology appointment and the cardioversion is scheduled for Tuesday. I've lost two pounds in the two weeks since the last appointment.

Jean good luck with the cardioversion. Is it out patient?

Helene, Rosemary Beach is in the panhandle of Florida. It’s a little east of Destin.

Pam - here's hoping you continue to feel better and have a great trip.

Jean - best of luck on that procedure. I'll be thinking about you Tuesday and sending good wishes.

I have a friend who’s vacationed in Destin. She says the area is gorgeous.

I haven’t been to Rosemary Beach before, but I have been to Destin twice. The beaches are gorgeous, sugary white sand and the water is usually very blue. The sand squeaks when you walk on it because it’s such a fine powder.

I saw Judy today with a friend. It was excellent! Renee Zellweger did an amazing job in the title role. She sounded almost exactly like the real Judy Garland. The storyline covered 5 weeks in London where she performed near the end of her life, but interwove some of her backstory from when she was a teenage star filming The Wizard of Oz. I really liked this movie.

I’m waiting for it to arrive at a theater near me. I’ve heard good things about Renee’s performance. I saw Downton Abby with a group of friends on Friday. We thoroughly enjoyed it.

I probably watch too much TV but after pushing myself hard all day I do tend to like to fall on the couch, watch TV and pet cats.

So far of the new fall shows I've watched (some like Emergence I won't even bother to DVR) the one that has surprised me is Evil. I really enjoyed the first episode.

Hopefully I'm getting my bad foods out of my system this week and can get back on track next week.

Jean, good luck today with the cardio version. Sending a prayer for a good outcome.
As of today, I’m down 10 pounds since I left FL. I also went for a physical. The appointment was changed twice after my doctor left the practice. I saw the nurse practitioner. My first BP reading was high - 160/76 because of white coat syndrome. The medical assistant did all the other vital signs, came back in and did it again and it was 142/72. I rest my case...I don’t have high BP. I got my flu shot and a new referral for PT on my knee. I had a few sessions in FL, saw improvement but then came back home. I regressed a bit since then so I hope more PT will strengthen the hamstring and get rid of the pain.

Helene, even your lower reading is a bit high, according to my doctor. What kind of readings do you get when you check it at home? I was very resistant to going on medication for my hypertension, but I have to admit that I feel much better now that I’m on it. Before I was having a lot of headaches and just didn’t feel good overall.

I’m mostly packed and ready for my trip tomorrow. I’m really looking forward to it, but trying to figure out what to take has been a challenge. I’m used to beach trips where we drive to our destination, so taking all kinds of gear is no problem. Trying to pare it down to what fits in a suitcase is a bit more difficult. In addition, I don’t really know what we will be doing in the evenings or how casual the dress codes are there, so I ended up packing a little bit of everything. I know I packed too much, but I’d rather have too much than wish I’d packed something I’m missing. Luckily, I’m flying on Southwest, and they don’t charge for checked bags.

Good job on the 10 lbs!

LOL on the white coat hypertension. I had that for years but no more.

I never got around to taking my BP at home. I don’t get headaches and feel fine. I have friends who have had a hard time with BP meds side effects so I’d rather not go there. She told me I can stop the low dose aspirin I’ve been on for several years. These days, doctors are only recommending aspirin for those with heart risks. I have no family history of heart disease and my cholesterol number is good. I’m 3 points above the current recommendations (130s) and I’ll bet I still had a bit of nerves when they took the second reading. Additional weight loss will drop it down further.

I guess I’ve been fortunate with my BP meds. I have not experienced any side effects from them. I was at a good weight for my height and age but still needed the medication to regulate my BP. I also had good cholesterol numbers. After I had the contrast CT echocardiogram last February the cardiologist told me I could stop the low dose aspirin and fish oil supplements I was taking. He also said I could stop taking CoQ10 and red yeast rice for cholesterol, but I opted to stay on them. I don’t see a downside to keeping my cholesterol level low even if I don’t have cardiac risk factors.

My cardiologist also told me to stop the low dose aspirin. I had actually read that taken in the evening it's good for blood pressure but she dismissed that.

The procedure went well and all is good so far. Helene--Congrats upon the ten pound loss but my doctors would consider 140 still too high for the top number. I don't have the white coat syndrome so my readings at the doctor is close to what I get at home.

Jean - great news!! Glad to see you posting.

Helene - my cardiologist wants my numbers <130 and <80. At home if not in the office (I also have a touch of the white coach hypertension).
