It's raining here today. Probably not enough to officially break the drought but it's a start!

I finally was able to get my second shingles vaccination today! I wouldn’t normally be that excited over a shot, but this was my third attempt at getting it. The first time I was told to come back in 30 days because I had had a steroid injection. When I returned after 30 days I was told that the waiting period was 90 days, so once again I was turned away. Today I was still short of the 90 day mark by 2 days, but I decided not to mention that. I really doubt that 2 days would make that much difference. The first one made my arm very sore, so I wanted to get it now to give my arm time to stop being sore before our trip at the end of the month.

Pam, that’s tough news to get about your cousin. I hope the test give him some hopeful news.
I have to admit that trying to walk more has decreased some of the knee pain. Combined with PT, I think adding in motion is helping. I’m only up to 2500 steps. That’s a long way from 10,000 steps but It’s moving in the right direction. I started off at 1,000 steps 3 weeks ago. And the unopened bag of chips are still on the counter. I haven’t really been tempted. Periodically the coaches tell you to treat yourself for all the hard work. Maybe I’ll open them for the next treat.

I think I’m having a reaction to my shingles shot. I can’t seem to get warm, and I’m achy all over. Also my stomach is a bit upset. I expected a sore arm since I had that with the first one, but I didn’t have any of these other symptoms. I had my flu shot 3 weeks ago, so I don’t think it’s the flu, but this is unpleasant. The shingles paperwork warned that all of these symptoms could occur, but I wasn’t expecting it since the first one didn’t bring any of them on. Luckily I don’t have anywhere I have to go today nor anything that must get done.

Pam - that's exactly what DH described after his second shot. He kept waiting for me to have the same symptoms but I didn't. It only lasted a day or 2.

I usually have PT mid-morning but today’s appointment was at noon. Since I started Noom, I’ve been trying to schedule meals and snacks more regularly. I meant to have something before I left the house but I got involved in laundry and forgot. I got to therapy about 15 minutes early and realized I was feeling hungry. That in itself is unusual for me. I took time to run into the store and bought a banana. It was just enough to make me comfortable during PT and to quell my hunger until lunch. I like that I’m working on developing healthier habits.

My knee is making progress as well. My therapist said she noticed I’m walking better between stations. And my pain level ha lessened.

Helene - great job on the therapy and the eating!

For some reason lately, absolutely nothing looks good to me at breakfast time. I am telling myself I HAVE to eat breakfast.

Eating breakfast is a big part of Noom. They recommend having eggs as part of your breakfast. They used an example of having a half cup of oatmeal, a hard boiled egg and some fruit. I can’t imagine having eggs plus oatmeal. It’s either or for me. I have eggs or Eggbeaters 4-5 days a week because I love eggs. I’d have a small bagel and cream cheese or avocado toast with it. I also like a Laughing Cow wedge on n English muffin.

I mentioned I’m trying to do better on snacks. I found a dip at Trader Joe’s that I like with carrots and snap peas. It’s kale an spinach in Greek yogurt and it’s only 30 calories a serving and it’s as good as any spinach dip I’ve had. I wonder if you could make eggs Florentine by adding a little to the eggs. I’ll try it and let you know what I think.

I usually love breakfast. I think it may be my post nasal drip making me give the side-eye to all breakfast foods in the morning.

I can't imagine eating an egg and oatmeal either. And who makes a 1/2 cup of oatmeal? Not lazy me that's for sure. Certainly it would be easy to have hard boiled eggs on hand. Hmm.... DH buys those all the time so I know our stores sell them (you'll notice that cooking them isn't on my list LOL!). I buy the red beet eggs (or pickled eggs as we call them around here) as protein snacks. Never thought about having a regular hard boiled egg for breakfast. Another idea just landed. Might be something to have with a NS bagel, e.g. on days I don't feel like cooking an egg. By coincidence I was just looking at a NS bagel in my stash yesterday thinking "what to do with this at breakfast?" Or I could just bite the bullet and cook an egg. I tend to make such a production out of eggs for breakfast (sauteing vegetables, make whole wheat toast) that it's a "weekend day when I don't have to go feed the colonies" event only. And, of course, I miss my Southwestern Egg Beaters.

Evening and snacks are my worst. Because of DH's schedule we eat dinner extremely early, even by my family's early dinner standards, which leaves me a LONG evening to tempt me with LOTS of snacks. I stocked back up on raw veggies at the store this week. And all the most attractive stuff - pints of ice cream and bags of chips - are GONE.

Had my first good day in awhile yesterday. No binge-ing on snacks. 15 minutes on the treadmill.

I woke up today feeling much better. Yesterday was like having the worst case of the flu I could ever imagine. Thank goodness that’s over, and I don’t have to have any more vaccinations!

DH is camping this weekend, so I think today I’ll do a little retail therapy. I need some new PJ’s and socks, among other things. Exciting items to shop for, lol!

I’m in such a rut with my breakfast choices. I almost always have a Zone Perfect Bar. They make 3 flavors that I like, so I rotate among those 3 with about 1/2 cup of milk. The bars all have at least 10 grams of protein so they keep me full for awhile. I’m not a big fan of eggs or oatmeal, so that rarely tempts me. I do love bacon, and DH has that for breakfast often, but I manage to ignore it when he does. French toast is a favorite of mine, but luckily it’s too much effort to make most of the time, so I rarely indulge in it unless I’m having breakfast in a restaurant.

Maryanne, I laughed at your comment about not making boiled eggs. To me, that is one of the easiest things in the world to make. I can’t even imagine buying them already boiled. I’ve learned an easy way to shell them, so I often make deviled eggs for DH when he needs to take something to a potluck dinner.

I’m with Maryanne when it comes to boiling eggs I buy Egglands Best hard boiled eggs. I add the to salads or eat them as a snack. A breakfast I like is a bagel or English muffin, a fried egg and a Laughing Cow wedge to make a breakfast sandwich.
Pam, in your place, I’d snag one piece of DH’s bacon and add it to the breakfast sandwich. Or I crumble it over a slice of toast spread with peanut butter. One piece of bacon is about 35 calories. I’m willing to spend that amount on something that kicks up the flavor so much.

Can you tell breakfast is my favorite meal? Maryanne, don’t they carry Southwestern Eggbeaters in your area? I’ll have to check the stores here. I think I’ve seen them recently. You could try mixing a teaspoon of salsa into the eggs before you cook them to get a similar flavor.

Jean, are you working this week?

Pam - so glad you're feeling better!

I've always said I'm the shining example of the person for whom convenience foods were invented.

The last place I was able to find southwestern egg beaters was walmart and they no longer have them. They are just SO different from "plain" EB. And not really southwesterny at all (i.e. not spicy).

Many of the stores around here are replacing things I have used as staples with sections of food I find strange, aimed at millenials. Apparently they don't eat like us. Which is weird since most of them must have come from households that eat like us. The trend has now hit the Walmart food section.

Okay, I have containers of colored pepper strips, baby carrots, sugar snaps (my favorite), and cauliflower. I'm ready for healthy snacking!!!

Good job. Getting things prepped in advance makes it easier to choose a healthy snack. I ordered a new scale from Amazon today. In spite of DH’s attempt to fix the old scale. It would display the weight one time and then display an error message the next time. If I ‘m weighing daily, I need accuracy. The old one must be at least 15 years old.

I love the new scale. Your weight is backlit in blue providing contrast to the digits, making it easier to read. And the weight displays for a few seconds after you step off. It’s a nice upgrade from the old scale.

We went out to lunch with a friend. I thought about ordering soup and a salad. I ended up ordering a half of a turkey sandwich and a cup of split pea soup. I got a side salad instead of the fries. Normally I would have gotten the fries without even thinking about it. When I get fries, I end up finishing them even if my intentions is to only eat a few. I think Noom is helping me to be more mindful of what I’m eating.

I had my follow-up appointment to the cardioversion yesterday. I am doing better than the expected so I don't go back for 6 montyhs. They approved the use of Kardia at home. Kardia is a one gadget that detects rhythm disorders and does a 30 second EKG and tells you if there is a problem. You can email the EKG if so desired.

I checked in to see how Helene was doing with Noon. Now that I am "normal," I need to get back to eating right. Like Maryanne has experienced, some of my favorite foods have been disappearing. Iam one of those who likes convenience and don't want to waste time or products making meals that will go to waste.

I haven’t seen any blank posts, but one of my posts never showed up.

DH and I just got home from celebrating my birthday (2 weeks after the fact, lol) at an Italian restaurant nearby. I had a $20 off coupon for this restaurant, so that was the reason we chose it as it is a bit more upscale than we typically choose. I brought home at least 2/3s of my meal, and it was all delicious. We shared a dessert of creme brûlée, which was delicious. And because I mentioned that we were celebrating my birthday, they gave me a $25 gift card to be used on a future visit! A very nice birthday celebration.

That was really nice of the restaurant to give you a gift card. And nice job on bringing home part of your meal. What did you have? DH loves crepe brûlée. Being gluten free, a lot of desserts are off limits to him. Crime brûlée has no wheat so it’s a delicious and safe choice for him.

Pam--Happy Birthday! How neat of the restaurant to give you a gift card for a future visit. When I was in the hospital, a friend who usually goes to the Outback with me had our favorite waitress to ask about me. She sent me a serving of their caramel cheesecake and didn't charge him for it. It was very appreciated.

Helene--I checked out the Noom thing at its website. They wanted me to join without telling me the cost of the program and wanted me to pay to see the results of the online questionnaire. I didn't so I waited to see if they would send an email as a follow up which they did. They offered the results of the questionnaire free and provided a link but I had to fill ouit the questionnaire again. Still no comments about cost. All I know is I'm supposed to reach my goal by February which is about a pound a week.

O.K., I went back to the email link and filled out the info again. If I claim it, they give me 15 minutes to pay for it at $129 with cancelling possible in two weeks. I just don't want to pay that for info I already know; I just need to use it.

Jean, I still see a blank post. Midnight’s photo is grayed out. There were two blanks this morning and the post number 2783 is the same number on each. Can anyone else read what Jean wrote this morning? Maybe it’s just me getting blank posts.

I’m weighing a pound heavier on the new scale. It could be the difference in using a different scale or maybe that’s an accurate weight. Whatever it is, I’m considering that my new base weight. I’m down 15 pounds since I let FL and 4 of those pounds are since I started Noom. I’ve logged every meal since I started. I was hit or miss logging on MFP. One thing I,m more aware of is the calories from fats. They consider under 300 calories from fat the appropriate range. I was regularly exceeding that the first week or two. I’ve cut that amount in half the last week. Cheese was a big part of my going over goal. I’ve substituted Laughing Cow for Cabot cheese slices and don’t feel deprived by the change. I’ve added more fruit to my diet. I love veggies but could go weeks without eating fruit. I grew up thinking many fruits were bad because they are higher in sugars. I’ve reassessed that and have added grapes and bananas into my choices. I will expand that to other fruits as I continue the program.

Helene--The post number will update on each post to reflect total number of posts to day. Yours, example, is 1441 on all your posts as your last post made it 1441.

I went and read the reviews on Noom. From what I read, it is the posting of foods eaten on the App and the mentor's reading of them and providing feedback that provides the difference. I just posted my breakfast on MFP. The difference is that MFP doesn't have someone providing feedback on the info posted on the app. I don't know that I would pay $129 for feedback. I rarely used the counselors on Nutrisystem.

Helene, I’m seeing Jean’s posts, so apparently it is a problem on your end.

Jean, like you, I wouldn’t be willing to pay for feedback when I already know what I need to do. I know it is motivating for some, but I think I’m too stubborn to find it helpful. I tend to feel nagged and annoyed with that kind of feedback. Why pay for it when DH will do it for free, lol!
