I was thinking 1812, though, currently, this would currently be a bit tone deaf to support… in spite of the "rousing" music!

As for the frillies you can blame maternal indoctrination at a young age plus soviet era subsidies and cultural outreach/warfare that sent out russian ballet companies on tours of european cities… (well, until their artists run away!)

I would say Hollywood won out on this one because mass produced films reach out much further and faster than in person shows!

You’re right - it was the 1812! Getting old and forgetful but it was sooo long ago. Haven’t been to symphony or operas for a long time. Hubby’s not a fan. But perhaps I need to start going alone…….

Hey, let's go for <insert hubby activity> and then we can head home via the <non hubby activity> :-)

I keep falling for that more than 50% of the time!

Nope - definitely need to go alone or with like minded friends. The long-suffering sighs, grumbling, fidgeting and general unhappiness take the joy out of the experience. After fifty years there’s little impetus for faking it. Hubby doesn’t do artsy, I don’t do cartoon-superhero, spy adventure, lots of explosions movies.

But but but all of the above can be fun! 🤯

    (Unless TOO artsy!😲🤯)

It’s okay to have some separate interests! Makes for a better relationship in the long run.

    Nope, lol

We agreed no this or that at the onset, and has not changed in the artsy fartsy area...

I wish though, I do enjoy....

Yooly is there someone available for a friends/girls night out?

My day - blustery. Broke out the fleece jacket... next up umbrella, I suppose, or I could just be wet with a bit of puddle jumping.

Yesterday, after 90mins, the rain splashed cart was still wet, shirt on way to dry from wearing. Found my jacket this morning for future excursions.

Looks like hellacious storm for Jamaica & Cuba. Wonder if it will miss US

Not that it makes a difference for the ones it's going to hit; but you, at least, are on the pacific coast if I recall correctly? Or are you an east coaster?

Yep, West Coast... in the atmospheric river year, lol, so wet!

Was catching reports of strengthening storm projections to 200mph winds on radio. Brutal

And just saw on tv, looks like the storm path veers away from US to Cuba. Looks like direct hit to Jamaica...

In good news, rec'd word a nephew proposed, she said yes - they are so happy, and optimistic, and if any luck, will have baby days ahead!

First big department budget meeting is today. Starts at 9am and ends at 3pm. Luckily my last part ends at like 2:15pm so I can log after that, but the rest of my stuff is spread out JUST enough to make it nearly impossible to get anything else done today.

But I am off tomorrow for Samhain so pushing through. I was also on a little early so gonna leave like 30 minutes early today.

Next week is gonna be rough though. Got all the rest of the department budget meetings throughout the week. Luckily none of them are AS long as todays.

What are the chances that a twice yearly medical appointment for Dad, semi randomly assigned, will be on the same day as a 2pm early bird (for $aving$) concert he signed up for?

Yup, yup! Off to the biggie downtown hospital we go. Then drive back to pick up dad's special friend. Then drive back for the concert. Then drive back home. Then drive back....

Well. At least I get to try out 😇 the much maligned Toyota/Subaru electric SUV. Feels much bigger than a Kia Niro so far!

I finally got the phone call that my insurance has approved Zepbound!!! Just talked to my pharmacy and they will fill it today or tomorrow and I plan to start it next Thursday (I want to do Thursday night injections).

This has dragged on for almost 2 months almost to get the approval. Original request was Sept 18th I think.

Wonderful @Athijade - approvals can be so difficult, but now you have the go! yay!

We are getting brute force encouragement to do the meds or wls. Affeared we might die, they are :/

@yakkystuff ???? What you talking about? I thought you had been losing at a good clip and that you didn't (yet) have other health problems?🤔

Dad got a "you're just as hooped but no worse off than last year, so see you next year" bill of health, so stable, which is as good as it could possibly be--which is awesome!

Then we did the "zoom zoom go cart driving around town" and got to the symphony and back.

Now heading out for some 🫟 paint. Just not Laurie's kind 🤷‍♂️

    That's the thing Pav

The doc had a graph... 1 yr with sleeve about 100 lbs anticipated loss. Bypass about an additional 20.

But, I am on pace to lose 50 lbs this year. Why is that not ok?

Hubby same, but they want him to start the meds now. Said, afraid you might die, but he is down 40 since Jan.

    I can't figure.

  • Athijade
    Athijade Posts: 3,444 Member

Yea, deciding on the meds was not an easy one for me. I wanted so bad to do it myself without them. But I am at my highest weight ever (282) and my pain levels have been out of control.

So after talking to my PCP, my urologist, my therapist, and an NP who specializes is weight loss (including meds and surgery) I felt a lot better about the option.

Then I did my own research. Everything from medical journals to TikToks from people on it. The good and the bad.

I need my life back. I spend whole days barely able to do anything because of pain. The hope is getting some weight off will reduce the strain on my muscles and they can relax (hypertonic pelvic floor, back, and hips).

I am still nervous as heck about them... but I am also hopeful for the first time in a long time.

In a way I am glad I can't quote directly. Which makes this a more generic answer.

All of us, obviously, don't have complete pictures. Our doctors are supposed to have our complete picture. And only take our best interests into consideration when offering suggestions.

At the same time, we do deal with specialists who are also human.

Not just humans who have biases and self interests; but, also humans who believe in what they do and are concentrating on their specialty and on the benefits it can confer if you do what they want you to do. They are, hopefully, believers. Because that makes them, again hopefully, good at what they do.

But, in general, I can only urge people to listen to professional advise after double checking it for bias and self interest and ensuring that they are doing what is best for them given what they know about themselves.

Unfortunately knowing what is best in not always easy especially when operating with incomplete information, in an information vacuum, or without sufficient scientific knowledge.

I know this first hand when I am not getting what I would consider "straight up" answers! Damage levels? Why? How? Still deteriorating? Yes, this remedy is a "guideline" but does the guideline apply to this situation since this and this doen't match? What is the guideline trying to achieve? I mean taking a pill is the guideline, but that's because the pill is supposed to achieve certain RESULTS. So what are the results we are trying to achieve? Can any of them be achieved by doing this? Since "this" also has a similar result: would doing "this" plus the guideline potentially cause other problems? If we are trying to prevent people from dropping to the ground—how would getting them to drop to the ground achieve an improvement? Are there any extra benefits by doing "that" that are not solely captured by the stated goals that are also achievable by "this"?

BUT, when dealing with over-worked professionals these details are extraneous and irrelevant to them.

The answer more often that not seems to boil down to: "You're being difficult and I don't care: this is the guideline! Follow it or not, have a nice day" (yo, bro, how about a reference to the write up to the guideline then? crickets: enjoy your internet time looking for it!)

    Anyway. I digress.

I don't know how far out of whack or in how much danger each of us is.

Many doctors also consider the general statistics on successful weight loss and on the retention of weight loss.

In some cases the rapid loss by itself is thought to be health protective. e.g. there is a higher chance of reversing type 2 by a more rapid than via a slower loss. But of course this may ignore the longer term question of how long that loss may last. A lot of studies are fund limited to shorter term follow ups. A lot of loss statistics to date show little long term successes—it does take the gradual changing of multiple factors in one's life to achieve and maintain.

So, a one year commitment and track record to a doctor may appear to be a drop in the ocean. Whereas, to their mind, if they chop you up then they know you have no way to backtrack.

And yet people who have had surgeries have back-tracked. One of CCCGG's best friends fully regained after surgery and is now, finally, losing again on glp drugs!

So, is that the best advice from the doctor? Do they have an incentive that makes them more likely to believe in some of these options vs others? What is your current actual health level and risks? Is this one of the things where age starts entering the picture and if you don't do this by this age risk factors say that you are unlikely to be approved at a later time?

    I can't evaluate that.

I know that certain risks peak at certain age groups and then they diminish. Or the opposite.

if Yooly hasn't had certain issues by her age they drop off the radar for her even if she still has what would be the same risk factors showing that, f.e., Laurie or I would have. Because she is past the inflection point for the dangers.

No matter what my dad thinks, it is extremely unlikely anyone will ever perform knee surgery on him given his risk factors and age. I'm actually very much so worried that my list of optional surgeries is now severely curtailed given risk factors. And I have a known no ligament no cartilage knee going on to 45 years.

So yea. Other than an independent second opinion laying out the alternatives and explaining the reasoning… what else to suggest? :(

is that dietician you've been talking to available to discuss independently? your gp? Look at the awesome team 'Jade has assembled!

    hugs sent!

    And "go Jade!"

just an extremely long winded way of saying that you can't totally ignore advice.

But you also have to fully evaluate the applicability and relevance to you, the potential biases and blinkers the advisor has (this includes both professionals and random internet strangers), and the risks you believe are present and relevant —- and then re-evaluate it all through a prism of whether YOU have biases/fears/or reasons to be leaning one way or another—reasons that may or may not be as objective as you believe them to be. and then come up with best possible answer ;-)

Wow! And then one wonders whether I overthink things ;-)

And then remember that the answers may NOT be the same for both you and hubby!

“if Yooly hasn't had certain issues by her age they drop off the radar for her even if she still has what would be the same risk factors showing that, f.e., Laurie or I would have. Because she is past the inflection point for the dangers.”

At 78, I’ve reached the average US life expectancy. I wouldn’t have had a mammogram last year if I hadn’t insisted on it based on other factors. Oncologist and I decided against chemo because benefit vs. risk was minimal. Ten year survival rates kind of meaningless for me. Likely something else will happen in that time.
I’m coming up on doing a routine colonoscopy soon. Again, insurance and doctors aren’t enthused. I no longer qualify for most long term preventative treatments because I don’t have LONG!
So now it’s basically up to me to decide what and what not I want to do, pursue, or fix. Is whatever needs doing worth the time, effort or potential improvement in my quality of life?
Kind of a liberating situation. Will I make a mistake, miss an opportunity, decline something helpful? Maybe 🤔

But many things are worth. Some aren't. And 10 years ARE meaningful. 25 maybe quite not as much🤷‍♂️
