They probably flew on to another city. Their flyover here of the entire D/FW area took less than an hour, then they flew on to do the flyover for Houston, then I believe they were going to New Orleans and from there, to their home base in Pensacola. Quite a packed day for them!

We’ve been getting take out from our favorite deli a couple of times a week. Jeff’s a small business and we want to see him survive. He makes most of his items gluten free on request which DH needs. I’ve been calling in take out for weeks. FL started dine in Monday at 25% capacity. Restaurants can also expand outdoor seating if they can socially distance the tables. I thought I’d wait before eating on site but Jeff expanded the outdoor seating. There was only one other diner and we picked a table 20 feet away. Plus he had his back to us. It was a beautiful day and I felt much less stress being able to do something normal. Salons are not open yet so I don’t have to decide about hair or nails yet.

DH is working hard on making room in the basement for the new freezer. Hopefully once we have that I'll be able to space things out a little more but I'm not going to add tons of expensive meat. Maybe some bread and milk. I'm still not trying to use the meat but I'll be happy to have room for a few frozen things that we'll eat in the current week.

I'm glad to be able to go out to feed the colonies but not anxious to go anywhere there are people and no plans to do so. If it were just me and DH I might take more risks but I can't risk the cats - ours and the colonies - being without me.

    From Newsweek:

he Kentucky Senate race between Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and his likely Democratic opponent Amy McGrath is shaping up to be one of the tightest, most contentious and expensive contests of the 2020 election cycle.

Polls have shown the race to be incredibly close, with the candidates either being tied or separated by single digits.

I made a small contribution to Amy's campaign just to add my encouragement and get on her mailing list. Boy, I wish we could take Mitch out!

Downside - somehow I got an email from the Trump campaign. Boo, hiss! I marked it spam!

That’s interesting that you got spammed by Trump people. I too hope MCConnell loses. I was watching Stephen Colbert and he was interviewing Robert Dinero. Dinero had very harsh words about Trump and compared people working for him as selling their souls to the devil. Only a very few people like Dr. Bright have had the courage to speak out against Trump’s slow reaction and putting more people at risk. Those few have sacrificed careers to speak the truth. What a pity so few in the government have his courage.

I completely understand your feelings that you need to keep the cats fed and safe. We usually spend a night in a hotel in Jacksonville during our drive back and forth to FL. There’s a small number of cats that hide in the bushes outside the door leading out from the breakfast area. DH can’t resist going out to see them. One or two are friendly and will approach him. Maybe it’s because he has a piece of bacon for them. He really should buy a pouch of cat treats or something healthier than bacon. Most of the cats are skittish and hide in the bushes. We really miss having cats at home but the travel is problematic.

When our DVR died, I lost my copy of the PBS show Hamilton's America. Left me totally bereft I'll tell you. There are no DVDs for sale on PBS, I'm guessing they couldn't get the rights to do so. I just discovered there are promotional copies of the show floating around. I'm so excited! Supposedly they are the entire show and not just highlights. Time will tell!

The things you don't think about:

How do you teach braille remotely? Ms. Heather Johnson, MSB Braille Instructor, has been planning and creating braille reading and writing activities and mailing them home to her students since school closed on March 13th. She has been touching base via video and email to review her students work and to connect and answer questions from their families. She has recorded videos of herself giving directions, shared videos on how to load braille paper, care for a braille writer and how the braille dots correspond with the keys! She is thankful for her mailman who has picked up her mail and delivered it to the post office for delivery to her students. (shown in the photo below)

That sounds pretty daunting. CSounds like she’s figured out how to continue teaching her students Braille.

    Love the memes!

Well, yesterday was my outing to the city to take advantage of the opening of nail and hair salons, as well as to pick up my grocery order. Let's just say it was an interesting experience.

The nail salon is in the mall which is closed. When you arrive, you call the salon and they come to open the door and escort you to the salon, but first you have to get hand sanitizer from one of the hand sanitizer stations located in the mall. Plexiglass separated the technicians from their clients. When finished, I had to go to the bathroom so I was escorted to the entrance to the mall restroom. Afterwards, I was escorted to the mall door which was unlocked to permit me to go out and then relocked. I guess one of the conditions of the salong opening in a closed mall that the technicians would keep an eye on their clients. She told me that she was definitely getting in her exercise. Everyone in the salon wore masks.

I then ventured to the hair salon to wait in the car until I was called in. I had to complete a form including a variety of questions, including "Have you been out of country in the past few months (don't remember the number)." My temperature was taken and then I had to wash my hands. All of this which was recorded and put in the stylist's folder. The ear loops of my mask were moved to the side to permit cutting hair in that area and then replaced. Everyone wore masks.

I then went to WalMart and called the grocery pick up number. My groceries were put in the trunk, and despite the problems of getting meats, I actually got my frozen burgers I had on the list.

I left Walmart and decided to stop at Wendys on the way home as I love its apple pecan salad. I was able to get that salad plus a simple burger but the good burger combos were sold out. It was interesting to look at the menu on the board and see "not available" over so many selections.

Let's just say; it is a new world out there! Today, I opened my boxes from Amazon that were delivered yesterday. Looking back at yesterday, it was not as fun as the good old days because of the new routines but we will survive.

I wonder if Wendy’s was actually out of the combos. Most have double burgers. I can see them serving only regular burgers as a form of rationing the supply they have. Singles would serve more people. We went to the dealership for service. We needed oil, filter changes plus they check tires, batteries. The service was free but we opted to buy a $30 disinfection treatment. It was like the cleaning treatments some businesses have been doing which I’ve seen on the news.

There were only a handful of customers waiting and the service waiting room is large. Everyone was spread out but DH and I were the only customers wearing a mask. All the employees had masks and I used their hand sanitizers coming and going. We were there about 90 minutes and I felt a little stressed being there. It had to be done though because we have a 1500 mile drive home.

From there, we stopped at Culver’s for lunch. It’s a Wisconsin chain that serves. fresh burgers, chicken and fish sandwiches. I wondered if they’d be in Wendy’s boat. Dine in opened this week and the drive through was open with a long line. We walked up to the door and they had an employee sitting in front of the door under a canopy. She had a mask and gloves and took our order. They were only taking credit cards which was fine by me. She took our burger order, gave me a post it with a number on it to put on the window. Another employee brought the order out to the car. I felt very safe with their system and with having lunch in our car. Our only other stop was to fill the gas tank. Gas is much cheaper on the island.

I shopped at our local island market a few days ago. The TP shelves were full. It wasn’t name brand but I’ve bought it weeks ago and the quality wasn’t bad. I didn’t buy any because I have a dozen rolls at the house. The meat cases were also fully stocked. We’re competing with a much smaller number of shoppers than off island.

Thanks for the updates as to what's going on out there. It is certainly a brave new world.

I know eventually I'll need to venture out. My list of doctor/dentist/vaccinations etc. that are being missed is getting longer. Which are critical?

I guess everything depends on what you're thinking the timeframe may be. We're getting no help on that (see article excerpt below). I'm thinking it might be 1-3 years before it will really be safe to venture out and I'm analyzing my doctor/dentist stuff in that context. For which will it be more dangerous to wait 1, 2 or even 3 years than to do it in the next 6-12 months?

From the NY Times (emphasis mine):

The president of the United States and much of the Republican Party are signaling that all this suffering is unnecessary, a prim sort of virtue signaling. And they’ve squandered the time bought by the sacrifices of the citizenry, so there is no national plan for a safe reopening. The lockdowns thus seem to have no clear endpoint.

In a functional country, the federal government would be assuring people that all they’ve given up has been necessary and not in vain. In this one, it’s every state — and, in some cases, every person — for themselves. As Andy Slavitt, a senior health care official in the Obama administration, tweeted earlier this week, the Trump administration has essentially decided, “It’s a long and difficult road and after we climbed halfway we decided it was too hard and decided to roll back down the Hill.”

It’s humor and the kindnesses we hear of that gets us through this. And ignoring all the idiocy coming out of the White House.

If I can ever get an appointment with my hair dresser, I’m hoping I don’t come out like this!

Sometimes you don't know what you've got until it's gone.

And that became very clear this week as two former presidents -- George W. Bush and Barack Obama --showed a level of grace and class that has been missing for much of the last three-plus years, and especially over the last few months as the country (and the world) has battled coronavirus.
