I don’t bake either. DH keeps trying to guilt me into making an eggnog pie. His mother used to make it. So far, I’ve resisted the suggestion. I like to cook but I’m not a baker. He refuses to understand those skills are entirely different.

When we first got married, I fretted over making things his mom made even if they sounded awful (there was something disgusting she made with filet mignon as I recall and I'd never desecrate filet mignon like that). Someone suggested I let those be things he went home for and mentally that's sort of what I did.

I have my mom's peach pie recipe and if I could ever get my hands on a decent peach I might be tempted but I haven't seen a decent peach in decades.

She wrote it for me on a recipe card. One of the few things I have in her (impeccable) handwriting. It also has a note about where it came from. One of the two town doctors gave it to my grandmother when she came to help after my baby brother's birth.

That pie looks like a photo in a cookbook spread. I’ll bet it’s delicious as well.

It turned out pretty good. The crust wasn’t perfectly crimped and collapsed a bit in a few places, but overall, it was a pretty good effort. It definitely tastes good and DH is very happy with it. My sister is very good with pies and she says I just need to practice. DH is onboard for that, lol! Maybe I’ll try an apple pie next time. I love a Dutch Apple pie with the crumb topping. Of course, that also requires vanilla ice cream, which is not good for my waistline or diet.

The "main" store I order from these days makes a mean apple crumb pie which is what I've been feeding DH for the most part.

Except for the week it arrived upside down in the bag and mushed over everything. The driver, bless his heart, pitched the pie and cleaned off the other items. Along with processing a refund.

    1. Sends text to self to make sure I don’t forget something

    2. Sees message that I have a new text and IMMEDIATELY thinks “who the hell is texting me at this hour?”

Very sad. And to use one of his favorite words, disgraceful!

We're certainly not doing ourselves proud. I looked at the footage of millions of us waiting in lines in airports over the holidays and thought that if all our health care workers decided to just stay home, who could blame them? They are sacrificing SO much.

I was just reading that cases of Covid and deaths were dropping a bit in Ohio. Probably the Thanksgiving surge lessening. But the Christmas surge should be here next week. Just imagine the stress level of those who are running out of unemployment benefits and facing eviction. Their Christmas was probably ruined by the presidential tantrum. Even though he finally signed the bill, it will probably be weeks before these poor people get checks and benefits. Some of his supporters must have been in that situation. I wonder if they still think he has their welfare at heart.

I can't even begin to get inside the head of a member of the cheeto's cult. Heck jim jones' flock knowingly had their kids drink the kool aid. Brain washed must be something totally out of the realm of my understanding.

It will soon be that time we set goals for the new year--goals usually destined to be unfulfilled. We do it with the best intentions but often have unrealistic expectations and give up at the first set back, calling ourselves failures.

Chances of succeeding are greater if the goal is reasonable and we understand we are not perfect but are willing to to keep trying. One of my favorite sayings begins with "Success is failure turned inside out..." and then emphasizes that success can be very near if we persist and don't give up.

I plan to weigh myself the beginning of next week, see where I am, and set a goal for the next phase of my weight loss program. Hopefully I can make it realistic.

I’ve started cutting down on carbs this week. It’s a small step, but I think it’s already helping some.

Our county has opened up vaccine distribution to those over 65 and/or those with serious health conditions. I qualify due to my age and DH due to his asthma and prior heart attack, so I went on the website and registered both of us. Now we have to wait to be confirmed as eligible and then get scheduled, hopefully somewhere near us. My SIL got hers on Monday and has had no side effects other than a sore arm.

It looks like we’d qualify for phase 2 of the vaccine. That’s between February and April. DH has a heart condition and we’re both old enough. If travel becomes safer, I doubt we’d stay in MA that long. We’d like to leave mid January. I guess we’d see if we could be vaccinated in FL or wait until we get back.

If you type "New Year's Eve" into google you get confetti. I don't remember google ever doing anything like that before.

I think they do something similar on their holidays. For example, fireworks on the 4th of July.

I got notification today that I’m on the list to get a COVID vaccination as soon as a dose is available. So now I just have to wait to be scheduled for it. My sister was able to get hers this morning, but she lives in a different county.

    Pam, that's wonderful.

Maryland is nowhere near that. They're just starting on front line workers.
