Very late introduction here. I'm Sylvia,53, in Massachusetts, caregiver for my 93 yr old dad and w/ a fulltime office job...realized recently that I feel a bit like a single parent...but it's not forever. My weight has swung way up and down throughout my life, managing to get to good comfortable weights, only to overeat and get back up there again. Started with Waistaways in 2020 with a good mindset (& I swear there is some invisible switch inside that can turn on to focus and have selfcontrol...and then it flips unexpectedly on me)...I did great in 2020 with meticulous logging but have since gained back nearly half of what I dropped. My goal for this month is to have every week in the green - doesn't have to be by much, just all green, to set me up for October losses. I've read through the first pages and will catch up by the end of today with all your news and tips and inspiration and commiseration.

Thankyou @bowens1973 for sharing the pictures and your success story! It’s exactly what I needed as fear is starting to set in with only 5 days left until I get my first new hip.4

You can say that again! @bowens1973 can be your superpower for getting through the surgery, all the physiotherapy (don't skip a single bit of that!) and coming out the other side so much stronger than you ever believed possible. You have done a fantastic job getting ready for your surgery. Losing 50 pounds while you are still pre-surgery and in pain is nothing short of fabulous. You've got this!4 -
Agree @CarolAnnM2 .. your commitment to yourself pre-surgery has been impressive. We'll be rooting for you. Nerves are expected and I can totally understand that. There is a road ahead but I know you'll take it seriously based on how well you prepped for surgery so you're going to continue to impress your surgeon I'm sure.5
-
@bowens1973 CONGRATS 👏 🎆 🚵♂️ You have worked so hard for this. You look great and you look like an athlete! What an amazing experience for you and Ashley. Hope you enjoy the rest of your trip and have the best time on vacation.5

Happy Sunday Team Waistaways!

Sorry about that!
And I managed 6 perfect form Pushups.
@PlaneMonkey I am in awe of your water sports activities!
Back later with my stats!6 -
@CarolAnnM2 You've TOTALLY got this! I can't wait to hear about your initial post-surgery reaction. You will immediately find yourself no longer in pain - a little post surgery discomfort that is easily managed, but it is life-altering in such a profoundly amazing way.
If you have any questions or concerns that you'd like to chat through, I'd be happy to be your buddy and look forward to welcoming you to the club!
You're amazing and you've totally got this. As Jugar mentioned, physio is your best friend but the hospital will ship you out quickly so self-motivation is key. Need someone to hold you accountable? I'm your guy! 😉 But, given your amazing pre-surgery accomplishments, you've got all the skills!
See you on the other side and look forward to celebrating with you - @ashleycarole86 and I will have a glass of wine ready to go to toast you.

Congrats to our top 3 for this week! You are lighting the way
As a team, we did not do well, but that means we're more determined for this week. Post any helpful things that you are doing this week to turn things around if you had a gain this past week. What will get is back in the green? Or at least in the red due to things like muscle gain - looking at you @YinxFed Your new commitment to the pushups is inspiring.5 -
@YinxFed, @ashleycarole86, @JEB03253 , @LoraineGB , @Micki48, @Bowens1973, @CarolAnnM2, @jugar
Thanks all for the birthday wishes! I had a great time eating dinner on the restaurant patio with my spouse and 2 daughters last Thursday. It's so odd to think I've made it to the 65-year-old mark a little lighter than I've been in several years. I plan to keep hydration up and highly salted foods *down* before weighing in next week! What a surprise to come in #2 on the WA team...wowza!
Time for supper...more soon.

OK - getting back on track, and also making sure to get all the work done to be ready for my October concert/recording trip! I'm going to pre-check my habit track items and pre-log food and exercise. Each evening I'll pretend that the next day has already happened and that I was spot on plan. I find that once I have entered the info, I'm reluctant to have to go back in and uncheck it or change it. Hopefully that will work!
If you have any other ways that work to boot yourself into doing what you know is the good stuff, post it! I think we need to change these little tricks frequently, or they stop working.

Caught up on reading. Determined to get back to regular posts and chiming in this week. Today felt like my first "normal" Sunday in 6+ weeks. No guests, no travel, regular workday tomorrow. I got up, planned meals, went grocery shopping, did a ton of meal prep. Finally took a nice long walk, starting with a 1 mile jog in the rain which felt super freeing. I did snack a bit but dinner was good. watched some football games - my favorite time of the year. I am so ready for colder temperatures (are you listening to me, ecosystem?) and cozy recipes. I have sold some more of my furniture so tomorrow I begin ordering the new. It's so empty in my living room it is starting to sound a bit echo-y. My only concern is that since I am ordering from Wayfair (my employer, ergo discount), all the pieces will need assembly and I am not paying their price for expert assembly. I'm fairly handy but not sure I will trust my own work when it means the bed frame under my body every night is supportive and long-lasting!
I have mirrored closet doors in the main room and I did yoga tonight for the first time in weeks. however, I got a truly unflattering angle of myself just sitting cross-legged from the profile view... wow. I just don't like any part of my reflection right now! Something with all this food and snacking has to give if I want to change that.7 -
I can't anymore.
I fell off the wagon in December of last year and all I've managed to accomplish in 9 months is to put on weight.
I just can't do this.
I'm sorry.10 -

@Terytha 🙁 I don’t believe that you can’t do this, please believe in yourself and you so deserve to be here and reaching for your goal. We are here to help when you are ready for it.6 -
@Terytha we believe in you. Baby steps. You can get back there. Turn that wagon back around and make sure you're the driver instead of the passenger. Recommit to some of the healthy habits you made time for on your first March down to that size 8 you achieved. You are a priority. You deserve to feel good.
@Kali225 I hear you on those mirrors... They can help with good form, but can also startle when you're used to seeing the front view then suddenly see a profile you didn't expect. I have a photo of myself from a similar angle posted next to the snacks to remind myself.
You're putting in the work and you're aware of your weaknesses so you are already on the right track.
If you need help with furniture assembly, hit up youtube! You'd be amazed how many people make unboxing and assembly videos for all kinds of things.3 -
Greetings Friends,
I was so chuffed to see that I had come in 3rd on the Team Winners table (yay!)
@Terytha I can absolutely relate to your sense of despair. Please know that we are all here to lift you up.
@Kali225 I hate those pesky mirrors! Although, sometimes you catch a glimpse of yourself (I promise, you will! ) and you declare "not bad; not bad at all!"
Pushups today - 6 with good form. But they were part of my scheduled workout and not done separately. That still counts, right?
This morning I worked on my lecture material, then I went to I deliver my voluntary English class. And when I got home I reviewed the online course that I am facilitating tomorrow afternoon.
Lunch was chicken soup and I am doing a chilli for supper.
Night night everyone 😴7 -
@Terytha Hugs to you! Weight loss is hard work, mourning the loss of previous progress hurts but you can do this. Take a deep breath and start small. So many of us can relate to the backsliding. It happens but you can overcome it.
@Kali225 The mirror thing reminds me of our favorite ocean vacation place. Right next to the dinning table they have a 10 foot by 8 foot mirror! If that doesn't inspire you to eat less then I don't know! Ha
@YinxFed Congrats on being in the leader board! You have a busy schedule for sure. Also, the push ups definitely count!4 -
@YinxFed every type of push-up counts! Even those that aren’t the best form. Wall pushups? You betcha! Keep up the great work!
I felt sluggish today but worked longer hours and managed to get my adjusted steps in just by walking around and mopping up water.4 -

@Terytha You are so not alone in your struggle and frustration. I have also lost all the progress I have made and it is very frustrating I know. We all know where giving up leads. I don't feel like I'm doing anything all that different now, and yet every time I get on the scale, it is up again. Small steps is right. I hope you will stay with us and not give up on yourself. You accomplished so much. I remember. Maybe not this week, but you can make progress again. Hugs to you friend.
Congratulations @bowens1973!!! Your accomplishment in your race is outstanding! You have so much to be proud of. The photos are awesome. Thanks for sharing.
Sending hugs and encouragement to all of you! Hopefully, I will find my groove with this new full time work thing.

Pretty good Monday? I hope so.
I got my habits done - exercise and productive things done. Food was not quite so well-planned or followed through, but still within reason. Tomorrow there are no leftovers to get in my way!
Just a few weigh-ins on the ledger for Monday-Tuesday:
@MsMcClane
@MoonlitMuse
@Kali225
@JEB03253
Thanks!4 -
Evening all. Just a quick check in. Today was the closest to being within calories that I've been on the trip. There is a guarantee I'll be back on the regular team again after Thursday. The food has been plentiful.
We repeated the Grouse Grind trail hike today and shaved 11 minutes off our time from May, so that felt great. Aside from that it was a ton of time in the car today and then the ferry to Victoria.. oh the KM's we are putting behind us!!
Tomorrow is the celebration of life for Brad's extended family member. We will likely stay a day or two longer in Victoria and hope to do some biking here before we head back across. We shall see.
@Terytha
Hope you can find the ability to stick with us. We are better with you and your story is still one of success. I can understand how hard it is to deal with feelings of disappointment though. You will find a way to rise up.5 -
Good morning team!
For those who aren't aware, I've been taking xenical (olistat) with my 3 main meals per day to help with my weight loss and my husband who has digestive issues and IBS has been taking it once a day with his fattiest meal. So last night my hubby declared that he doesn't think these pills are working and we should actually go on a "diet" and eat salads or something. "I eat too much bread!"
Gee, thanks for that declaration. It's so helpful.
I do the meal planning and grocery shopping and 95% of the cooking so I'm willing to adjust to suggestions for meal ideas because we all dread the "what's for supper" daily decision... But what he's really asking for is me to be the "food police" again. This happens every time. I have enough willpower for one, I don't have enough for both of us. We will have salads for the next 3 days and after that the requests for steak, wine, and ice cream will start. If I give in, I'm bad, if I say no, he pouts. There is no way for anyone to win this situation. I can't be accountable and do the work for both of us, I'm already slipping myself. I haven't logged a full day of food in months and I'm just eyeballing portions and hoping for the best. Based on the slow upwards climb of the scale, it's time for me to turn my wagon back around, but it sure is harder with that extra passenger on board whispering in my ear how delicious the Doritos taste.
Well team, please pass along your favourite salad ideas and volume eating recipes and I will see what fits into the FODMAP restrictions that hubby's IBS puts on things. talk about a challenge!! Wish me luck....
7 -
@PlaneMonkey No passengers! But at the same time support each other, right? Life is so messy sometimes. For IBS volume eating, as long as you know which veggies to avoid (and maybe more cooked than raw?), big skillets of veggies with protein of choice are really flexible and easy to prepare. I'm not sure which veggies are low FODMAP, but things like eggplant (especially the skinny asian ones with more tender skin and tinier seeds), maybe mushrooms, carrots, parsnips, spinach - whatever works. Brown them (especially the eggplant and mushrooms) with no oil if you have a good non-stick pan, or with as little as possible, add things in cooking time order, throw on the protein and flavours of the day, and you have a great big plate or bowl of food without too many calories. I find those more satisfying for longer than salads. This also works as sheet pan meals in the oven if you prefer. They do NOT need to go onto a big pile of rice or noodles or other starch! Add some sweet potato or squash (also great when browned) if you need something carby. Sauces can be ginger-soy, pesto, herbs and stuff, curry - whatever livens it up. I keep some of the pre-browned or roasted veggies in the freezer and just throw them in. That works well for eggplant, mushrooms, peppers, tomatoes, carrots - some lightly oiled, some just dry.
OK enough of my same old recipe! I know I have posted this before, but it continues to be my go-to dinner and I'm not sick of it yet
As to the issue of partner support that can turn to sabotage, stand firm! Tell him off whenever he gets into tempting mode. Keep starches off the table during meals and then they are an OK occasional snack - even corn chips and salsa It's time to reawaken all the tricks to keep things on track - you've got this!4 -
