dropped off on the weekend again for steps, gotta quit being lazy over the weekends that we are not camping or boating!4 -
Great quote @frankwbrown! “If you stumble, make it part of the dance.” I love it 😍!
@Bumbinella - I’m glad your extra effort paid off.
You’re doing great @JenHul! No need to get down on yourself for relaxing. Whenever I slept longer than I expected, my grandmother used to say, “You must have needed it!” It’s fine if you want to move more on the weekends, of course, but I’m not going to let you call yourself lazy. 🙈🙉🙊
Nice work to all the step challenge participants. I’m going to start tracking soon. I just haven’t made it to the store to get my watch yet. I also need new turf shoes for soccer so I think I’ll get there soon.
We play soccer on Sunday nights and I always think about my need for new shoes when my right arch is sore on Monday morning! 😬 Our team won again last night. We’re having a great season and my teammates are all wonderful and supportive people, which makes it more fun. ⚽️
I hope everyone has a good week! Go get those goals, Shape Shifters!4 -
Just putting this out here. I am not hungry. I am not hungry at all. It’s just that I know there’s ice cream in the freezer, and I want it!7
-
@frankwbrown congrats on your 10k! That’s an amazing achievement! Also, you’re logging in some huge step #s! Way to go!! Very inspiring!
@Bumbinella congrats in that great weight loss!! Commitment and persistence paid off! Love it!!
@looneycatblue you can do it! Basics works for sure! You’ll get your weight loss next week’4 -

@cre804 - I feel your pain. I find ice cream to be the most tempting for me. I don’t but it now that my sons are in college because it’s too easy to fall back into the habit of having a little every night.
It must be especially hard to resist during your recovery but your appetite was so low right after surgery that it might work out fine.
If I want ice cream these days, I have to take a special trip to the local store. I’ve been wanting to eat some lately but not enough to take the trip. I might have some on a day that I can work the calories into my daily target. Tomorrow might work because I have two workouts scheduled and I’m hoping to complete a big task. After I meet my deadline, a walk to the ice cream shop might be nice.
How about other Shape Shifters? What’s your strategy for dealing with temptations like these?3 -

Sorry for not responding sooner. I thought I had posted that I was taking myself out of the challenge. With my tendon injury I’m doing as little walking as possible.3 -
Sorry, I was out of town for a graduation.

@frankwbrown Congratulations on your 10K !
@PatriceFitnessPal I don't have a great solution for the dessert temptation, other than keeping it out of the house. Lately, I've been having 1 graham cracker with 1/4 hershey's bar, sometimes with a marshmellow, for a small s'mores like treat that is just 112 calories (a little more with the marshmellow) That feels like a "real" dessert and isn't too many calories.
Update on Buddy, my sick dog. On Sunday morning, we thought it was the end. He refused to stand up, refused to eat much and we had to carry him down the stairs to go out to the bathroom. He would not drink any water, no matter what we did. We took him out to go to the bathroom, and his legs gave out while he was going pee, and he just fell in the puddle.
My son was en route from Indiana with a stop in Denver. I called my daughter and told her what was happening, and she was able to grab a seat on my son's flight. We got home with both kids and Buddy became a new dog, drinking water, eating better, etc. My son is 6'3" and 205 pounds- big and strong- so he has become Buddy's elevator - just picking him up and carrying him up and down the stairs.
It was so nice to have everyone home together even though it was just one night- my daughter had to leave yesterday. It made Buddy so happy- especially to see my son, who he doesn't see as much. He just hugged and hugged on my son when he walked in the door. Buddy is their childhood dog so very special. Things are good at the moment!

Step Update
6/11- 17,138
6/12- 16,365
I'm planning a trip to the Grand Canyon this weekend. Before I had my kids, I lived much closer and would hike the canyon all the time. Well, the kids happened and I haven't been back there since.
I'm going to try to get a good hike in, but I'm slightly nervous because I haven't done any major hiking in quite a while. I'm excited though. It's my happy place and I'm excited to get away for a couple of nights.

@PatriceFitnessPal, @cre804
Ice cream is my Achilles heel. I've managed most days to be able to limit myself to just 3 spoonfuls, savoring each one. But some days I break down and binge eat. That happened the last two days, when I finished off half a pint of Talenti Gelato each day. As a result, I'm up a couple pounds. Time to find my discipline again.
Thank you, @SBus12, @pedal__power, @SavageMrsMoose ... I've already signed up for my next race: the Wharf-to-Wharf ~10k Race that runs from the Santa Cruz Wharf to the Capitola Wharf here in California. 😀
@Zaxa2021 - I haven't been to the Grand Canyon since I was a kid -- another visit is on my bucket list. I can relate to the nervousness and excitement. I've felt that with the 10k marathons I've done. And I'm nervous about my goal of hiking a half marathon (half marathons often have a time limit, but some allow you an additional hour if you want to walk/hike rather than run, with the understanding that you won't be eligible to win the race -- not a concern for me!). I've learned I can do 6.2 miles, now I want to try 13.1 miles.

I did end up having ice cream yesterday. BUT- it was after dinner, and I had plenty of calories left for it. I layered some strawberries in the bottom of my cup before adding the ice cream, so that made it look like I had more ice cream than I really did. So, it was more planned than impulsive. I normally don’t keep ice cream in the house, but Blue Bell was on sale for Memorial Day, and it was my first grocery trip post-surgery, so I picked it up as a special treat. I’m proud that there’s still half a carton left!
Rehab is going well. Still not as fast as I’d like, of course. Yesterday I was at PT and managed to pedal a complete rotation on the bike, so that’s a big milestone. After this week, I drop down to two PT appointments from 3. I’m walking about 4/10 of a mile up and down my street. But my left Achilles is acting up so I’m doing what I can to minimize that issue.6 -

@WA_Teacher - I hope your tendon feels better soon and you can enjoy your summer break from teaching!
BTW — The former State Director of Special Education in Washington (and formerly Utah) - Glenna Gallo - was recently confirmed as the U.S.Department of Education’s Assistant Secretary for the Office of Special Education Programs and Rehabilitative Services (https://www.ed.gov/news/press-releases/statement-us-secretary-education-miguel-cardona-senate-confirmation-glenna-wright-gallo) after a long wait to be confirmed.
The countdown must be getting close to zero days left until summer. Thank you for the important work you do!4 -

Congratulations on your fantastic step count! I’m always amazed at the number of steps you all complete @pedal_power, @Pupowl, @izzyred9400, @frankwbrown, @SavageMrsMoose, and so many others here!
Special 🎉🎉🎉 to @jessicakrall8 on the huge milestone badge.
No matter how large or small you step count is, setting and accomplishing those step goals is quite an achievement.
@cre804 - I’m so glad to hear about your progress pedaling on the bike and walking 4/10 mile with incremental improvement. That’s a smart way to heal — slow and steady wins the race!
And a belated cheer for last week’s leaderboard winners from the ShapeShifters team! @nancyinmo, @SavageMrsMoose, and @looneycatblue 🎉🎉🎉🎉

@SavageMrsMoose - I loved your heart warming story about Buddy’s relationship with your children. I remember when our Boston Terrier, Petey, was very sick and had to stay at the veterinary hospital. The medical team was trying to decide if it was better to keep him there a little longer or send him home with us. We went to visit and Petey perked up so much there was no doubt he should go home. Our new motto since we had to say goodbye 🌈🐶 is “live life like Petey!”
Buddy is a lucky dog!
Today, we went to the CVS near our house because the general manager was there to honor the staff after my husband sent a letter to the CEO to let her know how much we appreciate the staff there. They create a sense of community and ‘neighborhood corner store’ feeling. I’ll try to share a video of our dog’s morning routine, rushing over to CVS each day to greet everyone (and get his daily treat!).

@Zaxa2021 - Your trip to the Grand Canyon sounds wonderful and I’m sure you’ll manage a hike that feels right for you. The views are always breathtaking and I love the way the colors change with the position of the sun throughout the day. I have such special memories of a trip there with my mother and two sons. My sons loved the stargazing, too! Have fun!
… and good for you, @frankebrown! That next race sounds like a nice route, too. Did you get to enjoy the redwoods after your last race? I hope so — beautiful and so majestic!2 -

Not having it in the house helps me the best. Otherwise, I drink a protein shake or 16 ounces of water. I also think about how many calories the treat is and how long it would take me to work off those calories. If I end up giving in, I try to adjust my calories for the day or next couple days.5 -
Hey y'all:
Enjoying my staycation, but today I had to get up early and take my car to the auto service center for routine maintenance. Glad to get that accomplished and then ran a few errands, did some walking, read a book, relaxed, played with Betty...prepared and ate lunch and dinner at home and walked some more...did my strength exercises for arms, shoulders, neck, core and waist...today I received my soft-sided 2 lb weights, so first time using those while doing the exercises...only did ten minutes because I don't want to get overly sore.
Hope y'all had a nice day!

Well done @cre804! You handled your cravings perfectly! I like to use fruit as the main sweet with a small amount of yogurt or ice cream, too. Thanks for sharing what worked!
I like the protein shake idea @bearchested! It’s so much easier to consume calories than burn them, isn’t it?! … but I often ask myself if it’s worth it to cut calories or exercise more for the next few days to make up for some ‘treat.’ Usually, I can find a substitute that works - like @SavageMrsMoose suggested - but sometimes it really is more satisfying to enjoy a particular occasion and then deal with it over time.
In winter, my go-to substitute used to be a graham cracker, apple sauce, and a sprinkle of cinnamon heated a bit, but lately I go for a tablespoon of dark chocolate chips and a few walnuts or yogurt covered raisins. I bough some fruit popsicles because I thought they’d be refreshing in the heat, but I haven’t touched them 🤔
Thanks to everyone who weighed in with ideas. Keep sharing! It’s great learning new strategies with you all!3 -
