Good work on the run/walk Romy :)
Sounds like a good run Ceci, glad you beat the storm!
AglaeaC, hope you get your run in soon and it's a good one.
Robbie, well done on nailing your 10 miler and hitting the 160k for the month.

Tomorrow was my planned 'long' run which would have been only about 10k, but I've remembered there is a running clinic thingy on tomorrow morning, so I'm likely to go to that and see how I go instead. This week is likely to be around 40km and I'll build back from there.

Well done to everyone who got out running! Didn't even attempt it today, rain on ice is a dangerous combination. We took our dog out for a walk and had to cut it short, paths and roads were treacherous, but managed to get in 4000 steps between all the sliding around! Will try and motivate myself after dinner to hit the elliptical but its not looking promising at the moment.

I did my group run this morning, the warmup run felt good and didn't feel much harder than I feel it should. Then we did some warmup exercises and then intervals. I was both stupid and smart with the intervals. Stupid as I was trying to keep up with a guy who's 5k PB is somewhere in the 17min range or possibly faster. Smart as I only did 3 of the 5 intervals since I am still recovering from the cold.
I was chatting with a girl that was/is also recovering from a cold and she thought I had an 18:xx minute 5k because I was mostly keeping up with the fast guy and I was faster than she was (She's a low 19min 5k runner)

So I'm still not 100% but I'd say I'm back to around 90% Whooo!

Everyone is doing awesome and I'm still sitting here feeling sick. Could be worse though, my wife and six month old caught a nasty stomach bug on Christmas day and are still on the mend. Hopefully I can get back to it soon.

Two runs today. Stepsons girlfriend expressed an interest in trying C25K, so I set up W1D1 on my Garmin and took her across to the local park where the Parkrun is held. 3K later she managed ok, but we've got some work to do to encourage her out again on Wednesday. Stepson is coming out for that one as well.

I then ran back from the park, 7Km, for a routine easy paced session.

I think I'm finally recovered from the viral infection, after fearing a relapse on Saturday.

Hi all, I'm back. I took a bit of a hiatus. Not from running; but from social media. I was discouraged with my progress and thought it showed and may discourage others. But I'm back and hopefully with a more positive attitude.

Today is a lovely sunny, 2deg C day and I went out for my hilly run. That's about 2K fairly steep-ish uphill, then 1.5K of gentle hills, 0.5K downhill, ending with a gentle 1K uphill. I like this route. It takes me longer but it feels good to accomplish those hills, especially that first one.
In total, I ran 6K in 50 minutes.

I should have run yesterday, but it was cold and rainy all day, so I opted to play with the grandkids instead.

I did get to a local park this morning for a 5k run even though it was cold! 3.12 miles in 31:03. Very flat route. Week 5 of 20 week HM plan is in the books!

Will try to manage the planned 5 miler tomorrow in between visits with friends and family. Also hoping to get to ride with friends on Wednesday.

Still too icy to run but did 40 minutes cardio workout and then went for a 10k walk.

    WooHoo

    Some good activity up there.

taeliesyn - Nice going on the runs, especially doing 3of the 5 intervals with the "fast guy". I am sure you will be back at full power soon.
upsluki - these things happen, the key is to ensure you recover fully (well almost) before pounding the pavement, getting back early when your body is not ready, just slows you down. It's frustrating, try to get on top of the things that compete for your time when you are ready to run, that might be your biggest reward at present.
MeanderingMammal - congrats on getting over your infection and the long run. Probably more significantly well done on getting another person to try C25K. The problem I have had is that peoples enthusiasm wants them to do more and faster. I find it hard to slow them down and to get them to stick to the plan.
PaytraB - I hadn't noticed but then again I am a bloke so not necessarily in tune with other peoples emotions. I am happy that you got out and did a favourite run.
Ceci - Some nice activity on your Strava feed. Still haring off, I see :p (must resist, must resist ;) )
Romy - totally agree, rain and ice, dangerous combination. Temperatures around freezing don't help as that tends to cause sheet ice. Hopefully your gym work and long walks are paying off.

I changed plans, got Matt Fitzgeralds 80/20 running boohk for Christmas, so after spending a night reading it, I made the switch. In reality it was not too different from the plan I was doing. Principe differences, it was more periodic, it runs more frequently but overall the commitment is about the same and most significantly it swapped out my extra long runs (I converted a FM plan). So far working. 4 days down. The book is a good read, the only comments I would make are that the first 100 pages could have been reduced to 25 to 30, there is a lot of repetition. There is about 60 pages on the fundamentals of the plan including the individual training elements. Then 50 pages of plans covering 4 distances (5km,10km, HM and FM) with 3 plans for each distance, plans ranging from beginner to experienced runner, then another 30-40 pages on cross training and more padding.

Yesterdays run was a low intensity very easy and easy paced run. Todays was a moderate intensity run, 30 minutes of easy running and 12 minutes of pushing. I misjudged (misremembered) the target pace for the pushing bit so missed by 2 seconds per mile, about 8metres short over 12 minutes. Given the ice and snow still around, I'll take that.
Tomorrow back to very easy running.

    Be safe and have fun

Sounds like you are well organised Robbie, I don't think 2 seconds per mile will make much difference in the long term! I was looking forward to going out for a run today, temperatures are milder and the main roads and pavements are clear of ice. But I jerked my hip twice yesterday, trying on new running clothes of all things! And now my back is sore all up one side. I will wait and see if it improves throughout the morning before making a decision.

romy, you do not seem to be having too much luck. Just look after yourself. Re the 2 secs, agreed, won't make much difference, it assumes that the designated pace was correct in the first place. At the end of the day, I am a recreational runner, so if my 1st HM race ends up with 2 hours or 2 hours 20, it won't matter. The planning and training is what keeps me interested. Without a plan, I would not go out and run. I need structure to achieve anything. Although I work with ambiguity day in day out, I do like structure. Have fun

I need a plan to follow too, otherwise I get lazy. As you can probably guess I am not following one at the moment! I have stretchy ligaments which means I do get injured more easily than most people . Since I started running I have had problems with my knees and groin and occasionally my hips and sacroiliac joint, but I have got better at reading the signs and am better at backing off when I start getting sore. And I have got better at running with good form as that helps a lot. I walked into town with my kids this morning and my back felt okay so I went out for a 5k run after lunch. I'll take some ibuprofen before bed and I'm sure I'll be okay in the morning.

Bike trainer for an hour. Very hard work, but good for the leg muscular balance and the lactate threshold side translates easily to the running.

romy, you weren't but I used my best friend google and worked out that it was a bike session of some sort. Not sure I could put up with the moaning from my better half from having a turbo trainer in the house.

MM, good work on the lactate threshold session.

Ceci well done on the 5 miler, hope you friends turn up today for your bike ride.

Should have had a short 45 min very easy session this morning, but I could not go slow enough so it turned into an easy session instead. Basically went a minute a mile faster than I should have done. This 80/20 malarkey is more difficult than I thought, going really slow for ome sessions. Will target a 10km or 5km as soon as the snow clears just to see whether the target paces are ok. Used the 10k from the end of November as a benchmark, at that time I thought I could go a bit quicker.

Good luck with your training and have a great New Years Eve. Looking forward to hearing what you guys are committing to next year.

I am committed to keeping off the 40kgs I shed in 2014 and completing the Silverstone half marathon already entered. After that have not given it too much thought. Ideally I want to do the Humber Half Marathon, a run out and back over the Humber Bridge, but not committed enough to enter yet. Have fun

    Nice running!

I seem to have caught a chest-type of cold, with coughing to go rather than sore throat and the works. Am trying to cure it away with hot beverages and rest, but it is very very frustrating. Had hoped to run both Monday and today :/ Anyway, best case scenario is that it's gone by the end of this week and then I might squeeze in a run on Sunday still.

    Happy New Year!

I was able to get a 4 mile run in today. The antibiotics seem to be doing the trick for what ails me. Temps were pretty horrible here today 6F (-6 with wind chill).

I'd like to try to average 15 miles a week this year.I'd also like to lose another 30 pounds. I'd like to add 2 days of stretching/yoga into my routine for injury prevention. I'm signed up for a 10K in March and an 8k in April. We'll see where things go from there. There is a local HM in May, but the next one is in August. Either way, I'm not sure I'm ready for that yet. Anyway, should be a great year.

MM - Good work on the double run and getting someone else into C25K. Hopefully they stick with it. Turbo trainer sounds like a good workout and cross training session.

Paytra - Welcome back, I didn't notice anything discouraging in your posts, although I did wonder where you had gone. Sounds like a good run, glad to see you embracing the hills :)

Ceci - good runs there! A quarter of the way through your HM plan WHOO! Hope you got your ride in.

Romy - Glad you're playing it safe with the ice. Hope your back has settled down fully now!

Robbie - Good luck with the new plan! Is there any reason you modified the FM plan, rather than use the books HM one ? I do like the idea before 80/20 (I haven't read the book yet though) Sometimes slowing down can be just as hard as speeding up. I'm sure you'll keep the weight away this year too!

AglaeaC - Sorry to hear about the cold! I hope it's a speedy recovery and good luck for your run on Sunday!

upsaluki - Good running, glad the AB's are doing the trick for you. Sorry to hear the wife and kidlet were sick over christmas. 15 miles/week sounds like a nice reasonable target. Good idea to add the stretching/yoga into your routine. I'm sure you'll rock your 10k and 8k!

A couple of runs for me to report on. Tuesday I did my group session. Got there early and did a warmup, which was meant to be at an easy pace but I tagged on with two faster guys so it wasn't so easy. Although I think this was mostly due to still being in recovery mode. Then some shuttles and the proper group run. We were all taking it a bit easier on the group run and stayed in a tighter group which was nice and there was good numbers even though it had been a fairly hot day. Those runs finished the year out for me. Total of 1436km for the year.

Then today we had the parkrun double day. A short warmup before the first run, then the run where I was in a bit of a group, after my previous few runs I thought I was running around the 5min/km pace (based on effort). Turns out I did a 23:30ish 5k, so I was running faster than I thought. Yay definitely on the recovery path! The second parkrun I started right near the back with a friend, and we cruised along for a while until a cyclist overtook us and my friend tagged onto the bike, leaving me behind. I happily continued my cruise and put some more effort in on the last km to come home in around 27.

Quite a good start to the year :D

Welcome back Petra! I intended to stay more active on here again and see it's been a few weeks since I've posted. But yesterday I got the okay to start running again, with the common sense warning that if my foot feels wrong, stop. Just in time for Jantastic (I also joined the MFP runners team). Jantastic helped me a lot last year, and I was excited to see swimming & biking added to the mix this year.

My chiropractor and trainer both want me to ease back into running since my foot still isn't 100% so today I'm doing W1D1 of C25K. My trainer was concerned I'd be frustrated by him wanting me to start slow but actually I'm pretty excited about it. I needed a mental break from running as well as a physical one, and it was just Monday this week where I found myself thinking "I need to run." Bought new Asics (GT-2000) on Tuesday night, so I'm ready to go. Snowing & frigidly cold so I'll be on the treadmill, which is okay.

Welcome back to running Laura! And glad to see you are on the way to recovery Taeliesyn.

My daughters bought me a running journal for Christmas so that and Jantastic have been motivating me to get out. 7km yesterday and 5km the day before. Today is a rest day so just did some yoga. I am planning entering a 10k in March to give me something to aim for, it is uphill for much of the way so not expecting a great time, I'll just be happy to complete it. I also want to take part in some Parkruns, it is a bit of a hassle travelling there so it won't be a regular thing. Then I'll have my usual 10k race at the end of September, and maybe the Aviemore HM a couple of weeks after.

AglaeaC - Echo taeliesyn's thoughts above, hope it gets better soon and that you can get out and run on Sunday.

upsaluki - some nice goals there, you have made awesome progress on your weighloss so far, keep going. Glad the infection is clearing up and that you feel well enough to get out for a run.

laura - you need to make sure you take it easy to build strength in your body as you subject it to the stress of running. It looks like you are getting some good support there.

romy - nice to see you out and about, rest days are good. Rather than plan the 10k in March, enter it today, make that commitment for you.

taeliesyn - you have some nice runs there. I am glad to see that your recovery continues. Re the plans, the old plan was based on a 12 week coolrunnings plan but they are 12 weeks long and so I modified it, so it was weeks 1-10 of the HM plan, weeks 4-11 of the FM plan and then weeks 11&12 of the HM plan. I had to modify the boundary weeks to get it to fit, this was to get to a 19 week plan for me. In hindsight the FM plan is not really that beneficial to the HM. So I have dialled in the 15 week 80/20 plan starting at week 4 unmodified. Hope it makes sense. You expressed some concerns about the taper on my old plan, I was not sure about the stretch from HM to FM. All in all canning it, is probably right for me.

I entered the Humber Bridge Half (28 June) this morning. It was the longest single span suspension bridge when it opened, it is still the 7th longest today. Todays run was a bust, although I did the plan, my ego and ambition got ahead of my capability. I decided that the long run on Sunday would be better done today and I'd extend it by 10% to get a HM in. Well 5 miles in I felt awful, at 5.8 at one of my bail points, I bailed, I was exhausted. So although I managed the plan requirements, it was not the session I wanted. I felt so disgusted that rather than ride back I walked the 3.5 miles back. It was cathartic, examining my emotions and what had gone so wrong. It was also good to understand the impact that poor nutrition yesterday and earlier today had on my performance. Tomorrow is another day so unsure whether I take an unplanned rest day or struggle through the next few days to Mondays rest day.

Hope you guys(gals) have some good sessions.

I did a three mile run today. I'm just keeping to week 2 of the plan.

Ftrobbie- keep your head up. It's one stumble on a great trip. I struggle with trying to keep my goals modest. There is a Ragnar relay in June, but after thinking about it I'm pushing anything like that off until next year.

Park runs sound fun. It's not a very active thing in the US from what I've read though. Too bad.

Jantastic starts soon. Looking forward to it.

    Great job everyone.

I had a great ride yesterday with my friends- 35 miles, then brought in the New Year with them and other friends!

Today, I celebrated my granddaughter's 1st birthday- such a special time!

My training plan called for a 5 mile run today. I had almost talked myself out of it for several reasons- it was cold and raining, my legs were feeling the 35 miles from yesterday, my body was complaining because I ate (and drank) too much last night, it was getting late by the time I got back to my mom's house.

I did it though! It wasn't easy, but I did it. 5 miles in 51:51 (RunDouble) around the town where I grew up. I ended the run by lapping around the court house because that's the only area that is lit up and it was getting dark. I'm pleased with the way I'm holding a fairly steady pace throughout. My miles were 10:25, 10:24, 10:19, 10:08, 10:09 (Strava)

Tomorrow I make the 9 hour drive back home. At least I will be forced to make it a rest day! :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Thanks for the warm welcome backs!!

Ceci, your bike rides always sound wonderful. Nice time on your run, too!

The weather has been gorgeous here: sunny and crisp. I've gotten out for 2 lovely runs. The one on December 31 was longer and felt really good.
Today's run was on the treadmill. My right leg is feeling weird....almost like I was dragging it a bit. I've got to keep an eye on that but maybe it's nothing and will just go away.
I ran 5K in 43:00, then walked the rest. My plan had been to run 6K today but that leg didn't want to.

upsaluki, Ceci and PaytraB, well done on the runs/ rides. Glad it is all working out for you.

Found the real reason for a poor effort on New years Day, viral infection. Felt awful over the last 36 hours, although went into work yesterday. My hips and shoulders ached, if feels as though someone has put a carving knife through my left shoulder and is now trying to dislocate it. Had very little sleep. Took a rest day yesterday and am taking another today. Will probably do the same tomorrow, rugby training will still go on though. Will now have to do, what I keep telling you guys to do, take it easy and recover properly. Will live vicariously over the next few days

Great runs everyone. I'm looking forward to Jantastic too upsaluki, hope our team does well. Hope everything is okay with your leg Petra. Robbie, it can be hard to take our own advice, especially when it comes to running, but by the sounds of it you are feeling bad enough to want to rest!

I have been out running 3 times this week so just one more run to fit in. Weather forecast is windy with snow showers so I will probably just go out for a quick run. Back feeling better so was able to lift weights yesterday. It was my oldest daughter's 17th birthday on the 31st, so guess who has to take her out driving? I don't know who was more scared!

Too true, my wife asked if I'd gone for a run today, because I had a long sleeved running shirt on. When I said no, she remarked that I must be ill!!

Have fun and well done on getting out over the last week.

Welcome back to running Laura! Definitely take it easy on the recovery. C25K will work well as a recovery program.
Some good runs there Romy and nice targets :)
Robbie, hope you're back running again soon! The Humber HM sounds like a cool race.
Good to see you running again upsaluki, goal races are good to find but no need to rush into the longer races.
Nice ride and run Ceci! Although I don't envy 9 hours drive, it is good to have a rest day.
Hope your leg is fine Paytra and it was just an off day.

parkrun this morning, started off easy and built speed as the run went on. It ended up being a comfortably hard run and I'm pretty happy with my time for the effort level.
