Last night was the worst for coughing so far. Had sleep propped up on pillows.
No swimming this morning. Jonesing for chlorine. :D

    3200 @ 70 minutes.

Struggled to get my left hand to release the bubbles from entry. Felt like a get through it work out, and I did. :)

    Triathlon Swim Club. Split - 2000m. Started with 200m warmup 2x50m kick/ 2x50m Crawl.
    Then one of my favorite drills. 3 x 60 Stroke Time/Distance ( 60 STD sounds really bad o:) )
Swim 60 strokes - Stop grab your time off the swim clock and your distance. The idea is that this is a measure of overall stroke efficiency - Maximum Distance in Minimum Time over a set Stroke count. I was very consistent 79 - 82 seconds and 67-70 meters over the 3 drills. The speedster in the group was 66 seconds and 88 meters. The goal in the Junior Swim clubs is to get more than 75m under 60 seconds.
Then lots of Stroke / Breathing / Efficiency drills all on front crawl
    8 x 25m @ 40 secs, alternate fast/slow pace
    4 x 50m @ 1:15 Breathing alternate 3/5 stroke cycle
    2 x 100m Negative Split
2 x 200m Max Distance / Stroke. A big version of the 60 STD drill.( Minimum Stroke Count)
    2 x 100m Steady Pace Drill @ 45s/25m
    4 x 50m Descending Time 1:30, 1:20, 1:10, 1:00. A version of negative split.
8 x 25m @ 45s Big PushOff and Long Glide. Getting the feel for the maximum Efficiency Point.
Then 100m Cool down with 4 fast strokes before the wall and Flip Turns.
Can't do Flip Turns in the Shallow End as my flip/tuck is not tight enough and I end up colliding with the bottom of the pool - not a pretty sight.

It was a really good - Intense workout. Also received lots of feedback from the instructor within each set. I still have a tendency to 1) Drop my Left Wrist just before my hand enters the water 2) I also short my Left arm pull 3) Have a slight arm crossing over centerline on both left and right arms. Concentrate on keeping the hand flat so I get Fingertip entry and touching the Thigh with each stroke to get maximum pull distance. Keeping the elbow from bending/flaring out helps reduce Centerline Crossover.

@aliciamariaq Thanks. But I am extremely slow when compared to Miss Emma. It helps to have a good group of coach's and supportive friends. Not to mention that when you are in general lane swim and the other swimmers see you doing Drills they understand what you are doing and give you a little "Courtesy" room so you don't drop out of a set or run into another swimmer when lane splitting on a backstroke set.
@Mightylolo I believe that is the proverbial Win Win. So run to work/gym - quick workout - shower and across the road to work. You need a Solar panel on your gym locker to power a small fan to help dry your kit.
No swim today as I was out of town travelling for work and by the time I got back there was only 10 minutes left in Lane swim. Pouring rain so not good weather for a walk. Would have been perfect for a run if I wasn't injured.

Unfocused session with wild swings in my pace. 2500y in 56 minutes. I'm not spending consecutive days doing laps as I've started commuting by bicycle and not fit enough to do laps after the hour long ride home. Perhaps later in the summer...

Start date is June 20; I have till then to "graduate" from dorking around in adult/senior swim, to the early-morning lap swims. :fearful:

    Congratulations!

Went this morning, hard to get out of bed though.

    27 minutes in the pool
    150 warm up
    8x50 free
    4x50 breast
3x50 back (kick only in between sets to catch my breath)
cool down in the sauna (warm down perhaps? lol)
Shower in the communal shower because the stalls were taken. At least the shower heads in there are nice....

    3600 yards 78 minutes.

I have decided that 3 is the perfect number in sets. There is a whole swimmer logic that it follows, trust me. Perhaps is the oxygen deficit that leads to this thought process.

Frustrating - daughter getting a bit better, so we tried to sign her back into her usual swim class tonight (the one I often swim thru, but obviously haven't been given she's been poorly 6 months or so now). The class is full. And so was the pool. Total mayhem in the 'general swimming' area (lessons/club takes up all the other lanes). So even if she does get back in (she's top in the waiting list) the pool's growing popularity is making it look as tho I will never get a decent swim in that time anyway.....

And I have a weird foot pain (down outer edge of my foot) developing.

I guess atleast I know it is unlikely to be a swimming related overuse injury....(!).

Triathlon Swim Club. Lots of drills on improving Rotation and increasing the length of the stroke all on front crawl. 1800m plus 3x30 secs in the water slide pool

    Warmup
    3 x Swim the Pool Perimeter ( 3 x 80m ) in a tight group - Elbow Contact highly Recommended

    4 x 25m Heads Up sighting, alternate fast/slow pace
4 x 50m Long Dog Paddle - lengthen stroke and rotation.
2 x 100m Long Glide - Over Rotate to get maximum stroke length, No walls allowed for turning ( imitates stopping in open water )
    Repeat first 3 drills.

    1 x 100m Max Distance / Stroke. ( Minimum Stroke Count)
3 x 30 seconds - Water Slide swim - getting tossed around in the outflow :)
    2 x 100m holding steady pace
    4 x 50m Descending Stroke Count

Lungs are clearing more. Hopefully I can swim tomorrow.
The problem is that when I am horizontal, the coughing starts up again. If I can sleep flat tonight, then I can definitely swim tomorrow. Still want to try swimming some tonight.

If it is more of a float than a swim, it still feels good to be back in the water. Glad you are feeling better, fishgutzy.

3600 yards @ 85 minutes. Second day of more yardage and I can feel it.

@juliet3455 - so wish I had this sort of training before my first ocean swim. I am paying attention so that if I ever do decide to do one, I know how to train for it. :)

My "Into the Woods" summer has begun, and I will be hiking more than swimming for the next two months. That said, I managed to make it to a pool today and do an even 2 miles to celebrate my 55th birthday.

@Montepulciano Nothing beats a good open water swim for training/sighting. The Water Slide Recovery Pool swim is pretty good as there is a lot of current - waves and you get thrown around. These affect your ability to maintain a straight line and breathing technique/patterns. Hard to do without special permission from the pool. We have a lockable gate that we place across the top of the slide so we don't have to worry about any sliders. Although as part of one of the training swims they had a LG dropping Kick boards/balls and pool buoys into the slide so we were getting hit with small objects - imitating swimmer collisions at mass starts.

    If open water is not possible then I suggest some videos about open water swimming ;

Here is one drill that we are supposed to do as "Homework". Its a play on what happens when you do backstroke in a pool that has no visual aids on the roof - Wander around like a rummy.

    Swim Blind:
Find an empty lane at the pool and swim straight down the middle with your eyes closed. Based on which lane line you bump most often, you know which direction to compensate for in open water.

    2100m IM session

    200 warmup
    2x 200 IM on 3.30
    4x 50 back on 1.10
    100 back kick
    4x 50 fly on 1.20
    100 fly kick
    4x 50 br on 1.10
    100 br kick
    2x 200 IM on 3.30
    200 warmdown

Tough but loved it. Think the strength training, especially the straight arm pushdowns, are helping my fly not suck quite as badly lol.

Class today; butterfly stroke is coming along nicely, and shaping up to be my strongest stroke, just as my gym teacher predicted all those years before I ever took a swim class. It's nice to feel reassured that I'll become actually good at *some stroke, eventually. ...although I'm currently working under the assumption that if I just plug away at it long enough, I'll become a good swimmer out of sheer determination, in you know, however many years it ends up taking.

Light Rain today so I expected the pool to be a madhouse. 3 double lanes and 9 people. 4 were in the Leisure Lane, 3 in the fast and only 2 of us in the middle. So I got a great swim in. Started with an easy 100, 50 crawl, 25 breast & 25 back.
Sprint Triathlon 750m time trial. 18:00. My best last year was 18:40 so quite happy to get a decent time before really getting into the training cycle.
Then added 250m Back, 200m Breast and 2 - 60 Stroke Time Distance Drills.
It was a good day. :)

@emmab0902 Amazing swim - I understand the Tough but Loved it comment.
I can't do fly as I have had 3 partial separations of my left shoulder ( downhill ski injuries ) that make it uncomfortable and not worth the risk of injury for me.

@MightyLolo Glad to hear you can feel and see improvements.

@rosebarnalice Enjoy the time in the woods hiking and happy 55. Where do you do most of your Hiking? I do most of mine in the Canadian Rockies Banff/Jasper National Park, Mount Robinson, Grand Cache and Tumbler Ridge. Too many trails not enough time to do all of them.

@fishgutzy I hope your lungs have cleared and you are able to get back in the water.

At last - my dry spell feels broken, with my usual 1 k mixed drills 'glassmills' session done (in 40 mins, definitely a been out of the pool for a bit speed!). And then a couple of laps of honour...

Oh yes MightyLolo persistence pays off in the pool! And remember you just have to find the right goals for you - not everyone has to be a speed or distance supremo, admirable and motivating as these people are! I like butterfly too - my last swimming coach was really impressed with how natural my dolphin kick is - shame my arms don't seem to share the butterfly bent...

Glad you are feeling better FG and happy birthday RoseB x

Early morning splash/paddle. A relaxed 1000m as the pool was crowded 5 - 7 people per lane. So hard to get into ant rhythm or do any drills.
