When I'm not reading - I'm reading about what to read next. LOL!

So excited - Dan Brown has a new Robert Langdon book coming out 9/9/25 The Secret of Secrets. Hope it's more like his first couple of Robert Langdon books.

I finished I Capture the Castle - Dodie Smith over the weekend. I really did enjoy it. Some parts wouldn't play now but as a piece of historical fiction it is still well worth the read.

Now reading A Calamity of Souls- David Baldacci.

Welcome @bookscoffeejesus5575! Let us know what you think of The Parable of the Sower - It's in my TBR pile.

Thanks for the review, @Btrflydog ! I've moved that book ahead in my TBR pile.

And for what it's worth, I liked The Parable of the Sower too. It's a worthy introduction to Octavia Butler.

    Welcome @bookscoffeejesus5575 !

I just finished book 3 of the World War series by Harry Turtledove (science fiction/alternate history), Upsetting the Balance. This is a strange series but it is only four (25 hour) books long and I am three books into it (75 hours) so I guess I will finish it and see how it ends. I need to take a break and read something else though, not sci-fi.

I also read House Atreides (Prelude to Dune #1) by Frank Herbert's son Brian and another sci-fi author Kevin J. Anderson who co-writes the series, I liked that one better. It starred Duke Leto Atreides and fleshed out some stuff that came before the original Dune book, and there are three books in this prequel trilogy.

I have no idea what I am in the mood to read today. I am 45 books ahead of my reading goal schedule (!) so I can afford to pick long books, I'm in no danger of not hitting my goal. So many books to choose from!

Woo hoo, @CatfishFan! 45 books ahead is IMPRESSIVE!!

I'm enjoying My Friends by Hisham Matar and will definitely read his memoir about going back to Libya next. It's a fascinating story and his prose is thoughtful and "effortless" so it's a good read.

Finished My Friends (a novel) and started The Return (memoir). It's so interesting to read them in tandem! Hate to say it, but I liked him better before I started the family history….

Finished A Calamity of Souls - David Baldacci 5 stars

Next up - The House in the Cerulean Sea - T J Klune

@FitMary202 - Kindred by Octavia Butler was really great, and it was storytelling that held up even though it was written in the 1970's. I'll need to move up The Parable of the Sower in my TBR. Was hoping to get The Parable of the Talents and read the 2 close together. Maybe I'll break down and read it on my Kindle app.

@Catfish_Fan - great job on being 45 books ahead in your reading list. That's more than my challenge goal total! I am ahead of goal by 3 books.

Hope you all had a great Memorial Day weekend.

I'm reading Mr. Mercedes (Bill Hodges trilogy book 1) by Stephen King. It has some gross and sick parts. A lot of Stephen King is like fantasy to me, "suspend your belief in reality", like 'Salem's Lot, or Pet Sematary. A lot of Stephen King is completely entertaining and, because I never read the cover material or any reviews before diving into a book, it is completely different than I expected going in. I have read all the King books from the beginning through this one chronologically and this is the only the third one with parts that turned me off. They have never been scary at all to me. I'm hoping that the "case" concludes in this book and Bill Hodges moves on from these characters in book 2. I'm not looking at reviews though and will find out when I get there.

@Catfish_Fan, I love the fact that you've read all of King's work! For some reason I just can't get interested in anything in the horror genre, but he must be a great writer since so many people like his books. My son took a class in horror lit in college (!), and they read at least one thing by him. I think it was It. Even friends who read him in translation have recommended him… In any case, let us know your verdict!

As I recall parts of Mr. Mercedes was really gory. But overall, I enjoyed the trilogy. I started reading Stephen King when I was a teenager. He is a great storyteller. I need to go back to the Gunslinger books. I only got so far in them and there was a big gap between some of them. I think that was when he was hit by a car. I'd half to start at the beginning of the series as it has been so long.

Roland the Gunslinger was where I started reading King. I read and loved the series, and decided to read some other Stephen King, which I was under a false impression that I didn't like. I found out that I really did, most of it. There was a story in The Bachman Books (now out-of-print, because it started happening) called Rage about a school shooting. There was another story called Apt Pupil that I didn't like, involving torture of Jewish women in World War II, it was too much. Beyond those two incidents I have really liked almost everything else. Mr. Mercedes will be completed tonight and I rate it 4 stars, despite the bumpy (gory) parts.

I finished the trilogy (Bill Hodges) by Stephen King. I liked book two the best.

I'm reading Blood of Hercules by Jasmine Mas for a kindle challenge, but I am finding it to be a bit juvenile. It will be a quick read and I will earn the badge in the challenge.

Started to read Out of Place by Edward Said. It's already fascinating…
