Hey, you didn't let it turn into a daylong binge! Thats important. Keeping under 800 cal is really great. Just stay in your regular rotation and you'll probably be fine.

Keep it up and good luck,
    Susan

thanks! That makes me feel better, I was bound to slip 1 day :flowerforyou:

Sichi, lools like you are doing great. There is another JUDDD forum at http://www.lowcarbfriends.com/bbs/juddd/ that is very informative and supportive. More activity than here. A lot of them do what they call a mid day from time to time without it hurting their weight loss.

    Keep up the good work.

Hi, I'm Chrissy. Decided to give JUDDD another shot after half-hearted attempts all year to lose weight. I did JUDDD for about 20-days in May of this year and lost 12-lbs during that time. Not bad, huh!

Well, I'm ready to get back on track and I plan to give it a real shot this time. Yesterday was my first DD and I did great with a 407. Today, seems to be a bit harder as I try to eat healthy but eat up to my UD calories. Had pancakes for breakfast so I'm feeling I definitely need something green for lunch!!!

I think your UD calories may be too low. Have you figured them out on Dr. Johnson's website? I weigh right around what you do and am eating around 1900 on UDs and 500 on DDs. I also have a bad back (congenital fusion) and I'm hypothyroid.

ETA: I just saw your age, and the 1200 may be right for you, though I'd suggest double checking with the calculator on Dr. Johnson's site.

Hey, i started JUDD at the beginning of this month. I've read so far that most people here try to eat 1200calories on their up days?! Or did i read wrong? Because that would ultimately destroy the affect of the diet would it not? :P

Anyway, I lost around 2 pounds from this diet so far and am very happy with it. I need to just get my chocolate consumption under control :D

You should go by the calculator on Dr. Johnson's website. If you go too low on UDs, you could stall. Welcome!

  • Hi All,

I am 37 years old, female, 5.5 in height and weigh 157lbs. My target weight is 116. I started the Alternative Day Diet on the 1st January 2013. At my last weigh in I had lost 4lbs - in ten days - so I am very happy. I hope to keep it up. I am eating 20% of my calories on the down days (350Kcal) and whatever I want on my up days. I use the food diary on this site to plan my meals for the down days and I find it great.

    Hi,

Dabbled a little before Xmas but started properly last Monday. Did Mon/Wed/Fri on 500 cals. Tuesday and Thursday were up days but tried to keep it healthy and ended up eating around 800 cals on those days. Ate 1800 yesterday (up day). I'm not really sure how much I should be eating on an up day - have seen mention of Dr Johnson's calculator, could someone let me have the website add so that I can check it out? Think this is something I can do quite easily but want to make sure that I'm doing it right. (am 5' tall, 42 and weigh 140lbs). Thanks in advance
  • Hi Folks

Also JUDDIng after doing SW for 3 months. Lost 2.5 lb this week.

    Hi:

I am considering this but am still confused as to how to go about it. Do you feel like you are starving on your down days? I can't figure out what kinds of food I can eat that would keep me full during the day so I can make it through that would be under 500 calories all day. Also, how do you know when to take an up day or a down day is there a schedule?

    thanks

    Hi,

    >Do you feel like you are starving on your down days?

No, a little hungry, but certainly manageable for one day.

    > I can't figure out what kinds of food I can eat that would keep me full during the day so I can make it through that would be under 500 calories all day.

I'm doing 3 meal replacement shakes, 2 Slim fast low carb and an EAS AdvantEdge one and a lot of water/diet soda/iced tea/coffee. But you could also eat real food - stuff like vegetables/salads should work fine. I had a whole can of mushrooms the other day and it was like 40 cals. Have something _before_ you are starving and it helps. And protein seems to help keep the hunger away.

    >Also, how do you know when to take an up day or a down day is there a schedule?

Basically you just alternate. If you are eating today - then tomorrow you don't. Wash, rinse, repeat. If you need to interrupt a down day - then the next day is a down day. The key being the average of 2 or more days. I eat 3000 cals one day and 500 the next - so 1750 average.

I think some people also do mon/wed/fri down days to keep the weekends easier to manage.

    Hope this helps.

Welcome new JUDDDers! dtban, JUDDDing has given you good advice. You pretty much just need to experiment to find out what keeps you satisfied on DDs. I like a combination of bulk/protein -- a nice salad with tuna for example. Some do best with smaller amounts but higher fat. We're all unique. Hot liquids also trick me into thinking I've eaten: broth, tea, coffee, etc. Spicy foods work well for me too.

    >just one more question....is this healthy?

    I'm going to go with, I _think_so.

If you go to the "official" website or read the book, there is lots of information on studies, etc. And there have been human studies, so it's at least "healthy" enough to not be unethical to do to humans.

And I think that missing from lots of conversations about "healthy" is the question, "healthier than what?" Is it healthier than staying 300#+? I got to believe that it is.

Now, would my doctor or dietitian approve? I think my doctor will as long as my blood tests improve and my weight drops - she is a science person and is focused on results more than method. I think her response will be something along the lines of "Well, it seems to be working". My dietitian? Less so - as a para-professional - she's more of a dogma person.

But overall - it's not that extreme - it only seems extreme since we are not used to going more than a couple hours without food. I still average 1750 cals every 2 days. This is NOT starvation - this is pretty well aligned with normal dieting practices.

At least that is my 2 cents. :)

I will simply say, in response the question about whether or not JUDDD is healthy, that I have been doing it for over a year now. I've lost over 100 pounds. My bloodwork is really good. I am now exercising and enjoying it, where I used to loathe the thought of doing anything physical. I don't always make the healthiest choices on my UDs (sometimes even on my DDs), but I am healthier than I've been in the last 20 years. It's healthy.

Hi, I'd just like to introduce myself! I'm new here, but I've had great experiences with JUDD before and am back on it. (Only went off before my husband had some health issues and I had dropped everything to deal with those, bad me)...Looking forward to meeting some people who are on it and have had success with it! Getting support from someone who's never tried it is hard, so this place is exciting!

Looking forward to making some new friends and learning some new things!
  • Only done JUDDD two weeks but I've lost 13lb and that was coming from another diet so not water related ( hopefully). I've lost more the second week when I upped my UD calories and now I eat between 1,600- 2,000 on UD's and do alternate days.
  • Hi All,

I am on day 26 and have lost 6lbs so far. I eat whatever I want on my up days (every second day) and on my down days I was eating 350kcal for the first two weeks but I am now eating 500kcal on my downs days. My excema has also completely cleared up! I had it very bad on my hands for the last few months and its gone.

On the down days I eat:

Innocent smoothie (100mls at intervals throughout the day) + 1 small natural yogurt
    OR
Tuna/crab salad with cucumber, tomatoes, celery + soup (1/2 tin tomatoe, 1/4 tin canellini beans, mushrooms, carrot, herbs)
    OR
innocent smoothie (100mls at intervals throughout the day) + soup (butternut squash, carrot, leek, herbs)

I also eat Miso soup (sachets you mix with hot water) they are 18kcal each. Today I added 50g mushroom, 50g mixed peppers, 25g carrot, 2 scallions (all chopped) to water and boiled for 10 minutes until everything was cooked and then added the miso sachet - 57Kcal in total - lovely soup.

I read the kcal on ready made foods (yogurt/smoothies) and weigh all the foods I make myself (soup and salads) and use this site to check the calories of these dishes so I can divide into portions for down days.

I tend to divide everything into small portions so that I can eat every few hours, I find this helps.
I also drink lots of water (sometimes with added fresh lime juice) and herbal teas and black coffee.

I try not to eat for as long as possible each day (until 11am during the week and 12noon at weekends) I find this makes the calories last better during the day.

I think it is getting easier.

Hello. I'm going to try JUDDD starting tomorrow. I sort of had a 700 cal DD today so tomorrow will be an up day. I've lost 17 lbs at 1200 cal per day. I've tried low carb the past few days and I lost 1 lbs but having stomach issues so here's to JUDDD Andy last 15 to lose.

Hey All! Just started JUDDD'ing yesterday and I must say, I'm likin it. Today was my first "down day," and since I was busy at work, it went by like a breeze. Hunger is no match for determination, that's for sure. Anyone else find it strange yet exhilarating that just a few days of eating healthier can literally make you feel like a whole different person? I just find that I am far more cheery these days than I was when I was filling my body with garbage in the form of Taco Bell (but oh it is delicious, haha).

Day one. Starting at 251.6 lbs, 5' 10", BMI 35 and change.

My 512 calories on down days are comprised of 2 Ensure High Protein Shakes, @ 210 cal. each and a 15oz glass of V8 Low Sodium spicy Hot Veg. Juice for another 95 cals. - total cal. 515.

Plan is M-W-F down, and Tue-Thur and weekends up. And not to go crazy on up days but also not to deny myself too terribly either. If this isn't something I can do for life, it's less attractive to me.

I know Mosley says to go low-protein for the benefits of reduction in IGF-1 and the food listed above results in 52 grams of protein for the day. I'll do some research to see if that's low enough. Am reading his book now. (The FastDiet: Lose Weight, Stay Healthy, and Live Longer with the Simple Secret of Intermittent Fasting). Read Johnson's book yesterday, (The Alternate-Day Diet: Turn on Your "Skinny Gene," Shed the Pounds, and Live a Longer and HealthierLife).
