They set out sticky traps for the spiders, that’s the best you can do for them. Apparently spider’s exoskeleton prevents the chemicals from getting into their systems when they just crawl through it. And they don’t groom themselves so they don’t ingest it. He knocked down any webs that he found outside the house (which we’re supposed to do regularly?) and the treatment will kill any small insects that spiders eat so they’ll have no food source. Man, I hate spiders!!! Maybe if I was a better housekeeper? Hahahahaha! Yeah, that’s gonna happen!

On that note: my son is coming to visit next week and bringing his girlfriend of one year to meet us. He’s pretty serious about this one. Anyway....she’s extremely allergic to cats. I’ve had two for fourteen years. I’m going to sequester them in the basement a day early and clean house. Does anyone have any idea if this will help? We’re planning to try and spend as little time as possible in the house.

Suzy I googled "how to avoid cat allergies when visiting friends with cats" and basically it suggests the g/f start taking allergy meds a few days before she arrives and that will be more effective than if she takes it there.. and really it just suggests anywhere they will be (their sleeping quarters, living room, bathroom, kitchen) should obviously been vacuumed and floors wet mopped and the linens changed before they arrive and after the kitties have been quarantined LOL... and vaccuum or wipe down anywhere kitties tend to hang out (i have a friend who's kitties like to hide on a dining room chair under the tablecloth and sleep so i'd wipe down those places.. and if they have a couch arm or corner they hang out in regularly maybe don't let her sit on that particular couch/chair? ) lol... anyway the vac and mop i'm assuming you would probably be doing anyway since most of us tend to do that sort of thing before any company. Basically just cleaning to get rid of the dander and fur should do it.. you must be pretty excited that your son is doing a "meet the parents" trip!!

who the hell cleans cobwebs from the outside of their house regularly?? i don't even do it inside the house i admit lol... but i think getting rid of any food source for them will do the trick!!!

Thanks Snoozie. I’m going to be a cleaning machine for the next few days, I guess.

So not “Done” today. Seriously. Not. Done. I don’t think I’ve been this lazy in eons. I ate. I napped. I read. Then, apparently all that tired me out because I napped some more. I’m chalking it up to “one of those days” and moving on. It’s all I can do at this point.

I always feel that spiders are useful against flies (which spread disease), so I welcome them in my house and garden. I would freak out if I was over-run with them, though!

My ex was allergic to cats. I sometimes used a product for washing the cat (I think it was called Petalcleanse - there might be different brands) - you rubbed it over the cat with a cloth to pick up dander. It started to bother me that my cat might be licking it, so sometimes I would just rub the cat over with a damp cloth, which I think did help in picking up hair and dander.

I also bought a steam cleaner, and would use it on the sofa, bed, etc. Not on the cat, lol!

I did look into specialist vacuum cleaners, but it seems the ones that are really effective are very expensive! I just used my normal vacuum cleaner, but if you had a really good one or could borrow one, I'm sure that would be better.

Suzy - I believe what you meant to post was that you dedicated yesterday to SELF CARE, right? That all important SELF CARE we need to spend more time doing?? Yep thot that's what you meant to type :D:D

Vail thanks for the chuckle this morning - clarifying you didn't use the steam cleaner on the cat!! Not much better than starting your day with a good cup of coffee and a heart felt laugh so thanks!

I totally forgot to pick a goal yesterday LOL.. but I did get the few things I had sched for myself done. My sister is flying in from the east coast tonite and will be here for a few days to drive me around for the surgery Monday and post op checkup the following day. She was able to sched some time with one of her BFF's while she is here (she lived here til she retired a few years ago and moved down east) so she knows her way around on her own and will have the use of my car so it will work out well.

My one goal today is to focus on three healthy and delicious meals and to enjoy my oatmeal cranberry walnut cookie after dinner with my cup of tea - and to be thankful for the gift of my sister arriving tonite!

    Have a great weekend Hatters!

I’m so glad your sister is going to be there for you! Enjoy your time with her!

Self care. Yep! That’s what it was. Hahaha! I was up three pounds this morning but I’m not going to stress about it. I’m choosing to believe that it will come off quickly now that I’m back to my “sane” self. Ha! As sane as I get anyway!

I’ll be thinking of you tomorrow Snoozie. I hope everything goes well and that you’re back to 100% as soon as possible! I know you must be sooooo ready to get this over with. Enjoy your sister’s visit and let her take good care of you.

wow- lots and lots of posts since I was on here last. I did get a chance to read through them all and can relate to all the various issues of spiders, remodeling, positive "dones" and days with "undones"!

I had a great weekend in Sedona with my husband a few weeks ago. Started out well with food choices even though I was traveling and eating out, but there was a lot of alcohol involved and my food choices were not so great by the end either, so regained the previous lost weight. Also found it difficult to get back on track, but did manage to after about a week off.

I noticed what a difficult time I had hiking short treks (they were elevated though even if they were short). I attributed my being out of shape to my previous recent bout of some virus that triggered bad asthma for which I was on oral steroids for a week and then inhaled steroids for a month. So I am trying to build up my stamina again both with my joints and with my lungs with walking at the rec center across the street from my house. I can only do a mile without issues at this point, but I'm hoping to be able to improve to where I used to be.

I'm on the same page as everyone else with the evening being the most challenging issue. So one of my daily goals is to not eat after dinner or in front of the TV. My other challenge seems to be the weekends. I think that's going to take me a little more time to accomplish mastering.
I am making overall progress, including with the scale, and even if it is two steps forwards and one step back sometimes, I still am making progress.

Hope everyone is having a great week. Snooozie, hope you are having a great time with your sister, and good luck Gail with your doc appointment!

Thought I would share some photos from Sedona where we hiked to the two largest cliff dwelling sites in Red Rock Country belonging to the Sinagua (1150-1300 AD). There are not only pictographs and pottery left over from
the Sinagua there, but also pictographs from Archaic cultures dating back 3,000-6,000 years earlier!

So cool, Susan! Thanks for sharing!

Getting back on track when you’ve let yourself indulge without restrictions is so incredibly difficult. I think we all struggle with that but we’re still here and still trying! I think we have to give ourselves a break. We still need to live and enjoy life and let’s face it, that usually involves food and/or drink. As long as we make it back to our healthier eating and habits then it’s a win!

How are you doing, Snoozie? How’d the operation go?

My son and his girlfriend have been here for two days and while I did overindulge a bit, I don’t feel like I lost total control. I guess we’ll see what the scale says in the next few days but I don’t regret a thing. We had a wonderful visit!

    Super news on the surgery!!

Gail- so sorry you were disappointed with your results :/ Diabetes is such a beast to deal with -argh. Good luck with your fast and tomorrow’s blood work.

Snooozie- so happy to hear your surgery went well and you are doing OK !

I’m glad it went well Snoozie and hope you’re seeing 100% real soon!

Gail, I’m so sorry about your A1C. At least you know now and can work hard on getting it lower.

My son’s visit went great! It was so wonderful to spend some time with him. His girlfriend is very sweet and seems to be a great match for him....and no allergic reactions! So...yay!

Now I’ve got to atone for my eating and drinking indulgences over the past three days. That’s fine...like I said earlier we need to give ourselves a break and just get back on track.

Our October backpacking trip may be back on...keep your fingers crossed for me. My husband’s work project might be rescheduled. We should know in a couple weeks. (The bad news is that my winter hiking pants won’t even button right now. Hahaha!)

Amazing pictures, Susan! I didn't even know those places existed. It must have been incredible looking at those ancient pictographs, and the scenery is stunning.

I'm glad to hear the surgery went well, Snooozie. One less thing to worry about, and hopefully you will be back to normal soon.

I'm sorry about your results, Gail. I hope you have better news on the blood work.

Glad to hear it all went well, Suzy! Lovely that your son's girlfriend is right for him. Good luck with the backpacking trip! I hope it goes ahead ok. Even if you have to treat yourself to new pants - lol!

Morning Hatters - trying to stay off the puter too much til my check up tomorrow; so far so good so anticipating return to work Saturday... which at the moment i'm looking forward to .. of course that may change a few hours after I actually get back there hahahaha! My sister left Saturday; it was a godsend having her here as I was a little more incapacitated than I had figured as I lost the use of one hand for a few days from that "thing" it does with the swelling and what not.. and my stove died near the end of the week so she was able to take me out to get another one which arrives today.. even tho I can drive now im having a friend take me to my checkup tomorrow because I recall during the last surgery the doc did a laser tweak at some point afterwards - so just in case figured I better bring a driver this time lol.

The scale isn't moving (big suprise) but i'm somewhat back on track eating wise at least - im not allowed to do anything physical other than walking for the next 4-6 weeks but i'm hoping by mid or the end of november i'll be able to get back to pickleball! I heard there is also a badminton thing going on at one of the rec centres so i'll check that out for over the winter too. I did weigh in this morning and since the scale hasnt moved i dont have to change my ticker.. i would have liked to change it DOWN mind you ha!

ok.. nuff about me onto more important things!

Gail - i absolutely know what it's like to see an A1C number that is disappointing; my last visit mine was up to 7.7 and i think i actually cried in the car afterward! It took a few days to get out of the funk from the news to be honest.... and when i looked back over my check ins on here (because i added a column for my A1C way back so i could track it) i was reminded i got it down to 6.5 a few years ago.. (I was over 8 when i was first diagnosed) so i know we can change our numbers! I know you were also scheduled for some other blood tests after the A1C; I hope you got thru the fasting for them as well it so sucks! But good on you for getting it all done so you know what's going on - that is often the hardest part so kudos to you!! So just know that we''re here for you if you need anything - from just venting if needed anytime to whatever else we can offer, we're here for ya!!

Suzy - am SO glad the visit went well and you like the g/f LOL!! And score on no allergy probs from the kitties.. woo hoo!! and double woo on the potential for the october hike - girl is gonna climb another mountain!! will keep my fingers crossed it works out - pants or no pants!! Hmm maybe you could start a trend.. half naked hiking?

Vail - how's the program going; anyone at all showing up yet in the chat rooms? Are you still getting the weekly motivational emails? have you been able to give any feedback on some of the wrinkles you've run into? How about any new recipes - once my new stove gets here perhaps i'll be more inclined to cook... i doubt it mind you lol.. but... one lives in hope!!

Susan lovely pics.. hope your WW is going well and you're finding your stride with the program. I have a friend who is doing the online version but still attending weekly weigh ins and she's finding its working well so hope you are too!

Well coffee is in so i should be able to function now - better get dressed and humanish before the delivery people get here so i dont scare em away. My sister helped me move furniture around so they can get it but i just realized its gonna have to stay where it is for a while since i'm not supposed to lift more than 10lbs for a few weeks lol - oh well i'll consider it a new "look" LOL..

The programme is going well, thanks. It's very low key now, and hardly anybody talks, but I like having it and look forward to new messages. I have tried a couple of recipes for spiced stews - one chicken stew, and one Morrocan butternut squash and chickpea stew. All the recipes are easy and turn out well - I'm actually really impressed by the recipe book above all!

However, I haven't been great at sticking to it. It has been a mixture of being surrounded by unhealthy food at work, and social eating (and drinking) in my days off. Evening eating, I'm working on still, and that's improving. There has been a food festival in town and I felt obliged to support local businesses - lol! You buy a taste trail booklet for £4 and go round it must be about 30 places over the week, having tasters. The tasters included things like a piece of fried chicken, vegan fried chicken, coffee and cake at a posh hotel (linen napkins!), mini roast beef and yorkshire pudding, a glass of pet-nat (I had to look it up, but it was explained to us - like champagne but made using an ancient method) all sorts of things! I've had a great time exploring all that, but it hasn't helped with either losing weight or cutting back on sugar!

Vail that food festival sounds amazing - i would love something like that as i'll try anything lol.. they have a "winterlicious" and summerlicious" thing here we try to hit every year but its one restaurant at a time and lunch or dinner 3 course kinda thing .. I would much prefer the "taster" booklet!! And yes absolutely agree about supporting local; think of it as having done your civic duty LOL! Life is better with those moments so dont sweat it; its a "one off" event and you will quickly get back into the rythmn of lighter fare soon - once we get where we wanna be we'll be able to enjoy those types of events the way we should I think!
that mini yorkshire pud and roast beast... mmmmm! I had an appy once at a british put here that was three mini yorkshire puddings with the roast beef and gravy tucked inside.. im drooling even now i admit remembering it!! glad you're enjoying the recipes and the program!

its 430am here; up with a sore knee for some reason but heading back to bed... have my post op check this morning in a few hours so time to hit the :snooze button ! ha...

Vegan fried chicken?!! I absolutely love yorkshire puds with gravy! Yum! I agree with Snoozie, it’s a one off. As long as every night isn’t like that then what the heck! You still need to enjoy special things in life and that usually involves food or drink. I think if we can learn how to incorporate these events without letting them derail us for days then maintenance should be easier once we reach our goals.

I have to admit that I slacked off the last week or so. I didn’t get all my program exercises done and my eating was erratic. I’m only up a pound though. Back on it this week. I went back to yoga yesterday and am walking today. I may even go to the gym for some strength training if I can get my butt in gear. My hubby’s project team is making a decision this Friday on whether they’re going ahead or postponing. Fingers crossed for postponement!!!!

I hope the post op appointment went well!

    Morning peeps!

All good from the surgeon to rock and roll... well maybe not roll hahaha.. still restricted for a few weeks to no bending and no lifting more than 20lbs.. (I did laugh at that after but inside I was like ok yes i'll make sure of that. can't remember the last time I lifted anything 20 lbs.. oh ya the day I carried those damn groceries home and thot of suzys backpack!!) ha Dont go back for a month for the next check so its back to work on Saturday for me.. i'm still kinda happy to be going back.. that could change Friday night tho!! giggle snort..

Suzy.,,, your comment above.. "I think if we can learn how to incorporate these events without letting them derail us for days then maintenance should be easier once we reach our goals." is something I completely agree with.. having flunked maintenance after hitting my goal I know its because I just figured ok i'm done so its all good now I can just do what I want.. duh... biggest lesson I think was exactly what you said - I have to remember its a permandnet change that's required; getting back to the weight I wanna be is just part of the process its a permanent thing changing how I eat and moving more and that once there, remember its just fine to enjoy the "one off" evenings/events" but imperative I return to consisitently eating what I should be and keep moving …. !!

all body parts i can cross are crossed til Friday for your hike being a GO !!

Gail - hope youre ok .. know it's been a tough couple of days with all the test and results .. hugs..

I’m glad your check up went well. Going back to work will be good. Yes, it’s still work but you’ll be out and about, seeing your coworkers, have more of a schedule...all good stuff.

So, I’ve been thinking about that whole 80/20 thing and while I agree that it’s mostly what you put in your stomach that leads to putting on the pounds, there’s another issue besides weight. I know I’m not telling any of you something you don’t already know but I’ve been contemplating this a lot lately. I know it’s because I’ve been faced with helping my parents so much this year. It is imperative that we build as much strength as we can, while we can! My dad was always active, he did a good job at strength training, he wasn’t one to sit and do nothing. He’s almost 88 and is doing pretty well all around. My mom was never active, never exercised, was content to sit in her recliner and let dad wait on her (still is). She has so many health issues and her quality of life is not what I want for myself in my final years. While exercise is only 20% of weight loss there are other ways it affects it; like keeping you busy so that you aren’t eating, motivation to not overeat and undo all that hard work, that overall good feeling of doing something positive for yourself! I just want to go into my final stage of life strong enough and active enough to have a good quality of life not sit in a recliner and wait to drift away.

Okay....off my soapbox! Hahahaha! Just what’s been on my mind lately. Carry on!

oh my gosh suzy your timing is perfect i was just having this disucssion with my friend who drove me to my apt this morning.. she is my age and just retired in July and is working on getting as healthy as she can in retirement.. and we talked about how it isn't really the number on the scale that's important anymore, its more about being where you FEEL good with your weight, but more importantly - making sure you start building strength to be able to do the things you want to do as we age!!! at this stage we've already lost so much muscle and it is just going to keep going that way .. even my doc feels the ST is the most crucial aspect for women as we age!! and you get to see close up with your parents the difference it can make and how important it is.....

I honestyl dont know where to start with the ST tho.. I really dont... except I DO know the classical stretch series at least uses all the muscles and I can do that right now... so im def going to try to figure out how and what to do to make that a priority!

Yes!! this!! and agility...or is it fluidity...... if we don't get to moving, we will be wheelchair bound.

Had lipids done at another doctor and at work through a health fair and both of them had my total cholesterol at 240 ish...which is where it always stays normally. not the total 300 the "smash 'em spread 'em" doctor had it at..
I know that is still high, but not like 300 high... lol

Extremely busy few weeks coming up...so just doing a quick post and run when I can.

I'm glad the new cholesterol results are encouraging. Not that I understand them = mine is 3 or something, so it seems like there are two measuring systems!

So true about strength and activity. I'm a big fan of exercise - I honestly believe it's one of the most important things you can do for your health and with so many benefits for different aspects ... of course, I still struggle to motivate myself to do it. I really need to get more regular with the strength training. I did it all through my initial weight loss, but it's even more important now.

I’m going to go back to the flippingfifty site that you shared with us awhile back, Snoozie. I seem to remember that she had some great videos and such on strength training. I just want someone to tell/show me what to do, how to do it correctly and how often....for free. Is that too much to ask? :D
