I hate to have gotten off on the wrong "Step" as it were to start 2019, but circumstances dictate. I haven't bothered to post any of this (who needs to read the general bitching?) but it is going to show up in my weigh-in tomorrow so let's get it out there and be done with it and I'll just do my best to be able to move forward tomorrow.
We spent most of Christmas day in the ER with my MIL. Before we took her there, she was literally a raving, howling, incoherent insult machine who refused to even walk to the bathroom and demanded that we carry her. Refused to eat or drink, just stood at the top of the stairs cursing her mother (she thinks my wife is her mom and not her daughter) for hours. Her dementia always makes her confused and sometimes angry, but this was more intense than usual. Merry Christmas! By early afternoon, we called the doctor who said take her to the hospital. She refused to cooperate and I can't carry her down the stairs (I am nearly 60 for goodness sake) so we had to call an ambulance to transport her. Turns out she has a bleeding ulcer in her gut, had to have transfusions. But she was also generally weakened by the blood loss. So a week in the hospital.
This is and should be all about her, but the ramification for me is that we had to stay with her for much of the week because of the dementia and by and large were eating crappy fast food on the fly, and there has been very little time for walking. I'm frustrated.
Anyway, she was discharged to a rehab center on New Year's Day. She likely will go from there to a nursing home, which carries with it its own set of crazy emotions for Wyfe and me. It's in MIL's best interest but right now she hates us for "dumping her" and Wyfe is not dealing with it well. Hopefully the fog of dementia will close again and she'll forget she ever lived anywhere else. Hopefully she'll calm down and we won't be getting more calls from the rehab center asking what to do with her to calm her down. Hopefully we'll get back to a routine at home with some semblance of normalcy.
So tomorrow's weigh-in will be a disaster -- I did a preview this morning. All I can say is I will double down on the work that I have to do, beginning now.

Ok so 10 pages into this thread I'm going to introduce myself!!! I'm going to try to keep this intro brief because I'm also including the challenge response in my post... and that will NOT be.
Intro!!!
Hiiiiiiii everyone I'm Dana. I live in the great state of Ohio! Near Cleveland/on the lake-ish. I have been married a little over a year and I have a little poodle mix named Dennis. I'm a life-long workaholic (well... since I've entered the workforce... I'm 30 now) and I work full time as a payroll administrator for a staffing company and part time as a dance instructor and I take on side projects for dance here and there. I tried to cut back to 32 hours/week at my full time job to allow for a better work/life balance now that I am no longer single and not caring about relationship development... I believe I can get my work done in 32 hours (probably more like 20... but that's neither here nor there) and teaching is more what I want to be doing with my life. However, I'm back up to 40 hours at the office and my soul is crushed. We've had staffing changes that basically resulted in me working more to pick up the slack. I studied dance in college (graduated 2010) and have been looking for a dance community in the area to be a part of. I FOUND that last fall and got back on stage with an awesome group of dancing adults. I'd love to get back to my shorter hours so I can go back to doing what actually makes me happy. My goal was this Monday 1/7 but sadly that is NOT happening I'm trying to stay positive and tell myself this is temporary but it's been over 2 months and it's really wearing me down. ANYWAY... I started this challenge in January 2018 while another challenge I was in was on hiatus and only planned on doing it for the one month but here I am And I'm thankful to each and every one of you for being here and supporting me.
Challenge post!!!
What have you accomplished in 2018 that you are proud of? Talk about some of your successes and failures.
I did so many things in 2018 that contributed to how I feel today! (To those of you that have been following along you might think that's a bad thing lol... but I haven't offed myself yet so I'm taking it as a win!) New Year's Day 2018 I was not well. I woke up 1 pound into the "overweight" category. I had spent the previous weeks hiding my aggression and tearfullness and panic attacks. I decided on New Year's Day that I was going to do something about it. That I owed it to my husband (of only 3 months at the time) to at least try and be happy despite of all of my failed attempts in the past. I started therapy on January 11th, and new meds January 25th. The year itself had it's ups and downs for weight and mood but I do feel better than where I was a year ago. Not by much. But somewhat... and that's more than I can usually say. I've lost 6 pounds since then (this is pathetic... .5 pound a month?! at this rate I'll reach my goal in like 4 years....) ok ok so I lost like 13 but weighed in today only 6 pounds less than January 1 last year so that still is terrible. I'm calling the weight loss a failure. Mental health saw some gains but came crashing down at the end of the year and I'm almost back where I started.
Soooooooo how do we change that?
What does your New Year look like? Where will you be and what will you be doing? How will you do it?
In 1 year from now you will be getting ready for 2020. What number will you see on the scale? What health changes will you have manifested? Do you see yourself involved with any fitness routines or fitness goals that are fun and exciting?
I don't really buy into the whole "new year new me" mantra but I do want this year to be different.
Fitness things:
I went to 3 yoga classes last year total. I want to not be able to count the number of yoga classes I go to this year! I'm starting off the year right with a one-day yoga retreat on 1/26 that I'm SO excited for - it's all about setting goals and intention for the year.
I really need to get back to the gym too. I haven't been going since my schedule changed back to more hours When I cut back I worked in gym time and now it's gone. My spare/productive time went to working on choreography for my dancers.
Last year my husband and I rented kayaks a couple of times to go down the river and it was so fun! We went twice but I want to go more this spring/summer/fall and get our own kayaks that we can take out on Lake Erie as well as the river.
Diet things:
I need to get back to intermittent fasting. I'm still doing like a 10 hour eating window but I need to get back to 6 hours. I honestly feel better with that and am able to control my calories better.
I'm going to start logging on MFP again... shooting for a closed diary six days/week. I try to just be mindful the 7th day.
I'm cutting back to NO MORE than 3 alcoholic drinks/day (per day that I'm drinking. I don't currently drink every day... nor do I plan to start lol) Honestly I think this will help my weight loss more than anything else.... it's nothing for me to drink a whole bottle of wine starting with dinner. Vacation may be an exception... but I'm going to work on doing better with that too.
On New Year's Day 2020 (wow, finallly got to the point here. I'm long-winded when I finally decide to speak up... ) the second number in my weight will have changed to a 1 or a 2 rather than a 3 or a 4 where it currently sits. From my weight this morning I would like to lose 20 pounds. I think I'm holding on to some water weight from the holidays but there is plenty of fat to be trimmed. Gross visual. But that's how I feel and it needs to change.

@Shirin_K boy that scale can be fickle. If you know you have done what is right. It will show on the scale.... Eventually! Do you take your measurements? sometimes that is a better predictor of your work. don't let it derail you tho. your doing great.
@nstephenson01 hey we will take it!! great job. holidays are over now. we are gonna get to work.
@sleepymom5 we all need to know what our no no's are. mine main one is bread. but really anything junk food wise is a problem for me. I sure hope you feel better soon.
@eyesopennow man... our old folks. I am sorry it has been difficult. but you mil is so lucky to have you. and you will be repaid for all you do. I don't know how but God does. hang in there buddy.
@DananaNanas I love your intro and your reflection exercise. you have learnt so much this past year. your always so very busy I am amazed that you find the time to do any extra. that being said. this is going to be your year. now you have said who you want to be. now its time to make her. get moving girl!!3 -
@eyesopennow I am so sorry. Dementia and Alzheimer's are such awful diseases.2

It's been a busy morning. Yesterday I did get in all my 10k steps! And managed to get through yoga even with a headache. I was shocked when I was able to do the "plow" pose. My belly has been too big to successfully perform that pose. Yesterday my feet sailed up on over my head and easily touched the floor. I kept having to wiggle my toes to make sure they were on the floor and not on the top of my daybed. Lol. I am loving the progress. This is my 3rd consecutive month. I remember the first week being possibly the hardest. I managed the high lunges. Not easily but successfully. Molly knocked on the door while I was holding the pose..."ughhhh...not now" I yelled out. She had just gotten home from work. Kisses have to wait.
Had a good eating day yesterday.
Big hugs to everyone! Let's keep going and taking this one day at a time.
@Shirin_K ...well that scale just sucks! It must be broken! You will need to take it one day at a time and shake it off. No matter what we say or how we know better...that scale will still miss with you. It's going to happen. Best we get it over with early in the month/year. Now let's kick butt this week and dazzle everyone next weigh in with our amazing loss. It WILL happen!!!4 -
@phoebe112476 love the paris t-shirt story! I too have lost 37 pounds. How tall are you and how much more did you want to lose?
@cyndiesstuff Way to go Cyndie!!!! It is great to get over the first 3 days. You can definitely do this! Next week the 140's and a healthier body!
@sleepymom5 I am so sorry you aren't feeling well. Elderberry syrup can be helpful, but rest is your best bet.
More later.1 -
@cyndiesstuff - your post about cleaning your closet gave me a nudge to do mine too! the extra winter coats & boots i no longer wear aren’t doing anyone any good stuffed away. Packed up a bag and I’ll drop off in one of the collection bins later today! thanks for the reminder!3

Happy New Year! I just realized we are in a new month, new year, and I have not been on here at all. I just checked and there are 11 pages of posts I have not been able to catch up on.
I will try to get on here later to introduce myself to any new members and catch up with you all.
I hope you had wonderful holidays!3 -
So not sure what happened with the weight.i have been exercising and eating well. I have started logging my food but yesterday I fell asleep and forgot to to push the button to complete my diary. But today is day 3 of logging, I will try not to fall asleep before completing it. I also was up bright and early to get my workout done. If my weight goes up again next week that scale is going out the window.6

I appreciate all of the suggestions for drinking my water, but I did the same thing again today! My sons bought me an Apple Watch for Christmas and I set a reminder to “ breathe “ and I’m so insanely busy at work that I don’t even stop to breathe let alone drink water. I get in a crazy work frame of mind and I just don’t stop all day. I don’t even stop for lunch, which is a bad thing!! I had 2 bottles of water on my desk all day and didn’t have a drop. Now that’s weird but when I’m in that work mode it’s not! Don’t know if that makes any sense.1

@eyesopennow I know you have had your MIL at you home for a long time and took great care of her. I am sorry to hear of the stressful holiday you had. I hope your wife can come to peace with her Mom being in a skilled care unit. She needs more care than you both can provide. If you tried, you both would end up being sick and exhausted. It is hard to take care of yourself when you have so much going on. No worries about the weigh in, hopefully things start to settle down and you can focus on yourself. Hugs to you and your family is in my prayers.
@DananaNanas I think 6 lbs down from last year is great! Better than going in the other direction. You really have been working hard to get to where you want to be. You have been making progress even though it is not as fast as you would like. There are always ups and downs on our paths, the important thing is you are still here and still putting one foot in front of the other. You also have a plan, I know it isn't easy. I am so glad you are here with us. Hugs!
@Mrsbell8well it is so nice to actually see yourself do things you couldn't do before! I really wish I could join you with yoga. Now I have to look up the plow pose!
@ljdanny Your weight can fluctuate for a number of reasons. Don't sweat it-you're doing great! Keep doing what you are doing and I am sure you will have a loss next week!
@Kirsten11872 I was wondering where you went! I thought we lost you! Lol! Glad you found us!
@lennoncpa it is hard to do something new, especially when your mind is otherwise occupied! Maybe you can take a sip when a co worker gets on your nerves or a client isn't prepared...make a game out of it! Instead of saying something that you probably shouldn't take a sip. Lol! Idk, I am grasping for straws here! Hope you can figure something out.
@czvanut You really have got this down! Great job! Hope you and the hubs have fun tomorrow night!
@twyla77 Another great day! Keep it going!4 -

Tonight I went to my 4th yoga class in 4 days. It is so much fun! I hope to be able to go this weekend, as well. Then I start back to work again after some time off which will result in much less yoga time.
Before Yoga I only had about 20 minutes to take the dog for a walk on our first sunny day in a while. We have a path we normally walk that takes us about 30 minutes. I was planning to turn back part way to make it home in time. But we easily made it in 18 minutes. I haven't walked her that way in about a month because of the early darkness, my work schedule and the weather. I was jogging for much of it. So nice to see my fitness increasing, as it started so very very poorly.
Along those same lines, I always spend a week on Lake Michigan with my parents and sisters and families. I just booked the house for the summer. The owner sent me some information on local hikes. There is an awesome hike along the lake and thru the dunes that is 4.5 miles long. Last summer I was not able to walk from the end of the boardwalk to the water front without having to stop and rest. This year I will be walking that 4.5 miles and I am so excited. I love hiking and walking on the Lake is one of my favorites. I am so glad I will be able to do these things I love again.
@Shirin_K - Frustrating about the weight gain. My weight fluctuates up and down, sometimes a few pounds, next week you might see a large drop. Are you using a scale to weight your foods to get the most accurate calorie counts? I am only bringing that up because I have seen many others point this out as a possible culprit for slower loss or unexpected weight gain - not because I am suggesting you are doing anything wrong. Knowledge can be power.
@eyesopennow - I am so very sorry to hear about your MIL and all the stress and suffering on your family.
@Mrsbell8well - I am so happy to hear about your yoga progress. Please keep sharing. It gives me hope that I will continue to get stronger, more flexible and better able to balance. And I just love to hear about success! To answer your question - I am 5'5.5" and started at 228.5 pounds. I have lost 38 pounds and plan to get to about 150, but I am holding off on a final goal weight until I see how I feel and look as I get to a "normal" BMI. How tall are you? Do you find the yoga helpful on your weight loss journey? I am not sure if the yoga will help my weight lose but I really enjoy it and need to get back some flexibility and strength. It was terrible before I started focusing some on basic stretches and walking more. Terrible!
@ljdanny - Sorry to hear your frustration about the weight. My weight fluctuates, sometimes by a few pounds. Hang in there. If you are sticking with your plan, the weight will change. Are you weighing your food with a food scale? I see this often suggested in situations with weight gain or slower than expected weight loss (not that one week of being off is a pattern I would be worried about).
@DananaNanas - I am also new to Yoga and have been to several classes recently. I love the idea of going to a retreat. I am going to look into one near me. Thanks for mentioning yours and giving me the idea. I like your plans for 2019 and beyond so clearly outlined too. Inspiring to me to try to do the same instead of just saying, "get healthier"5 -
Check in (Friday)
Still no logging. Next Saturday, the scales should be unpacked.
Water: heaps. >2L of water with lemon. Did have diet sprite and Coke Zero. No coffee or tea.
Steps: 7120 with night time routine to go.
Successes: stayed under 30g of carb. Drank heaps of water. Chose to walk rather than find a closer park when seeing the solicitors about the house settlement on Monday.
Opportunities for improvement: Hurt my back helping dad - I need to ensure that I’m not risking myself to help him. Need to ensure that my early morning carb cravings don’t get on top of me. I had most of my carbs at breakfast then struggled to find low enough carb options for the rest of the day.
Focus for tomorrow: LCHF breakfast. Strawberries to satisfy the ‘sweet’ trigger only if necessary.4 -
Daily check in Thursday
Food-on target
Water-not enough
Exercise-steps 10,304
Yoga-day3
I love planners. Yesterday my daughter turned me on to the Happy Planner system. I had to order the same beautiful one she has. It’s called fresh romance. I ordered the supplemental fitness segment. I can track my food and water.
This weekend I begin the deep cleaning of our home. I have planned a 3 month winter schedule. I am also in the midst of planning our yearly budget. And our vacation schedules. I think we’re also going to book a cabin on a lake.
This Sunday I start back with my running program.
I start interviewing soon for promotion. It will be a big step up in responsibilities and time commitment. That has me feeling a bit apprehensive.
Getting ready to transition into 90% raw. And a mid month juice cleanse.
The good thing is that my energy is increasing with the diet changes and increase in physical activity.
One day at a time.
Sounds like lots of other team members are experiencing many changes as well.4 -
@phoebe112476 you have inspired me with your lake vacation. We were just talking about going camping but wifey wants to check out cabins this year.
I have been doing yoga for years. But this is the first time I have committed to a daily practice. It’s astounding the difference. Yes I do believe it affects the appearance of my muscles. I am stronger and looking more toned. I m currently doing you tube Adrienne 30 day yoga challenge.
I’m 5’4. Started at 202.8 pounds. Currently 165.2. Goal 142.
Good luck!2
