@ContraryMaryMary Is that bore hole to find water for the lawn or the house? That seems like a lot! That's not too far away. Will the girls have to change schools?

Yes, the bore would be for the lawn/garden. At that price, given the amount of rain Auckland gets, I don’t think it’s worth it. For a lot less we could buy a very large tank and collect rainwater off the shed roof.

Yes, the girls will change schools - they’re only at primary and will go to the local country school.

Yes. A rain barrel sounds much more financially sound. I hope the girls are okay with changing schools.

@ContraryMaryMary I am on a runaway binge too. You have a lot going on, I'd sum it up to stress eating. When you figure out how to break it, let me know. I am guessing that the bore is what we call a well. They are quite expensive and usually are good enough to use for drinking water. It does sound unreasonable for lawn care though, unless that's in the budget. Not here, most can't wait for the heat so the lawn dies back and no more mowing and care. Although my retired neighbor is out 630AM -9/10 daily taking care of his yard with automatic sprinklers. To each his own.

I am up too early again...
Dang Cori and his 4 am routine of meowing, I tossed his butt out and went back to bed but was too hot to sleep. It's 66F in here, so it must be all the ice cream and cookies I ate, and menopausal symptoms. I let Bear out at 5 and he comes back immediately knocking at the door wanting me to go find Cori... jeez man. So now I wake the dogs who are barking at the things only dogs can hear. In trying to find Cori, I flash the light in this large snowball bush which elicits a rattle... great. I tell Bear that there is a SNAKE BITE, he runs for the porch. Thank goodness, He's in now. I kicked Cori out again with the dogs, frickn' pest. naps today, after my self-care botox appt. I also phoned for a coolsculpting appt to remove some o the cookies lol! Perhaps it'll motivate me to get back on track.

PCP's PA visit yesterday went fine.
I forgot everything I wanted to talk about, hormones, wrist pain, etc, after the nurse asked the routing questions regarding current meds and one of the three depression screening questions she ran out to get a form... I think I am gonna start lying. I had to take an assessment, which stirs up all my tears. oh well. Got my med adjusted. Still not done with the paper due today, but I think I lack a page or two, no big deal.

    Good morning folks!

Another day! I really need to buckle down at work. I spent all day researching water flows and wells. @contrarymarymary I just got a quote too for $29K for a well hole...not even the pump or pressure tanks...just a hole in the ground. I am getting a second quote with a company who does it all, hole, pump, solar...the first company only digs holes. I was lamenting on FB about commitment issues on deciding where to dig said $30K hole and as usual (I am starting to not be surprised anymore) One of mom's friends who she used to surf with in the '60's is a local life time geologist who specializes in water....of course.

Yesterday was a rather unproductive day overall though. I skipped my run, ate leftover pizza for the 3rd night in a row, and actually sat on the couch for 2 hours and talked to a friend. I did work on my business though. I have made enough this month to make an extra car payment.

Today I need to focus on work work a bit. There is still one process that I don't get and the primary is content to just to do it all herself...except she isn't supposed to be the primary with me here. I am also going to reset passwords to change 2 bill addresses. I have just been guessing on the total due (over guessing) so I might as well get that together.

I have my meeting with the county at 9...$1,600 for them to tell me what I have to do to split the property.

I am going to the commissary for lunch and going to buy some good stuff, maybe look up an easy recipe I can make for dinner. Probably get a burrito too for lunch.

Guess who has NOT called yet...yeah, the car place. If she doesn't call today I am going to assume it is a no go.

I may have a buyer for the POS 5th wheel...I told him he could pay me to replace the tires, or do it himself and it is free. I am so DONE! Hopefully he calls soon.

Tracking calories and all, going to try and get out for at least a walk! And do some pushups. I have PT for my shoulder tomorrow.

Oh and that stupid treadmill quote, I have to counter that before they assume I accepted their terms.

Well eating is a bit more controlled. Not as well as I'd like but better than it was. DH is on board to help me as much as he can so that's good. I'm was on angio yesterday, so lots of sitting/standing and doing not much moving. Same again tomorrow. Today in on admin, so sitting most of the day. Sigh. Its good to have admin days but I hate the sitting around lol.

@CMorning99 You have so much going on. I hope you can at least get your car fixed and give the 5th wheel away.

@swenson19d Your cats are hilarious. I always make a list of things to talk to the PCP about, so I don't forget anything. Maybe next time you could do that. Hope the medication change helps.

@Avidkeo Glad your eating is getting better and DH is helping. That's nice to hear.

    Good morning!

The wild world of my mom is continuing to unravel and the diversity in people has stopped surprising me. I called the well company that put in a well nearby for a second quote. I mention to mom's dear friend (from the '60's) who used to build in our county and lament about county requirements. He asked if I had talked to another longtime friend of mom's and the surfing groups...he has been a well consultant in the area for 40 years and has put in over 900 wells and is a geologist. So he calls me and is a whiz! He is also worked with and is friends with the guy who I am getting a quote from for the well. So he is going to do more research and see if he can get me a deal LOL

I had my first PT this morning. Diagnosis is torn rotator cuff. I suspect I did it Dec right after mom died and I was doing all the throwing away of stuff and must have tossed something heavy or weird. I have 3 months of PT and then reassessment to see if it will heal on it's own.

So from the county meeting...if I didn't have a middle man, I would have lost my *kitten*.
    1) I have a trail corridor on the property so I have to get approval from State Parks to change things
    2) I have to buy a Development Credit (their way of allegedly controlling how much is built in the area)..they are $20,000
    3) The Indian that did/does all the archeological surveys has been disowned by the tribe...have to redo.
    4) I have to get a biological study that only can be done in Mar-May for an endangered plant
    5) Storm water runoff study. Cali makes you dig huge reservoirs on your land if you don't have gutters. We never had one b/c that was not a thing when mom built...but now the county noticed and we a have to be up to code to make changes.
    ...those are the big ones.

It is really starting to look like $100K to split. I am going to have to figure out money and what money to use where. A construction loan wont cover this, and I have a finite amount of money. I was also told (have not confirmed) that I don't get the capital gains exemption when I sell b/c you have to sell and buy like for like...I pray I can sell before I am a Cali resident then. Based off of timelines, I am thinking maybe Mar-Apr of 2023 I can sell. I retire in Aug 2023. So much to try and figure out and not be done in 5 years and massively in debt.

Stuck to calories yesterday and went for a walk. Today seems to be on track as well.

@CMorning99 - I thought in CA if you went to probate the value of the property was bumped to current and you didn't have to pay any capital gains, or only what it would increase between the probate assessment and when you sell it? I hope you can get it all figured out. Are you planning to keep half of it to live on when you retire or sell both after the split?

I am trying to get myself out the door and over to the gym - I am feeling super nervous about going and I don't know why. Planning to run on the treadmill for a couple of miles since it is so hot outside and figure once I go the next time will be easier. I am going to convert my membership to a Silver Sneakers membership since I qualify and it is free. Not that I am paying much now anyway but figure I should take advantage of it. I may also get a Silver Sneakers membership at the Y that is about a 20 min drive. They have a huge indoor pool and aquatic classes.

I will be back later to catch up on everything and report on my Ortho appointment yesterday.

@shanaber This is the capital gains on the profit I make when I sell. IDK if there is something that will protect me on that. I am grandfathered in Prop 13 so my property taxes are the same as mom's.

@swenson19d - love hearing about Cori and Beary! They are so funny. I have finally gotten Mitzi (Hilde's cat) to come out and visit when I am there. Mostly she just hides. I did pull out one of her stuffed toys and made it move all over the living room. She was curious, probably thought I was crazy but at least she appeared and watched. She has some toys with balls in them that spin on different levels and she does play with those because I find them moved around the house.
Hope the paper got completed! I was always a procrastinator when it came to writing papers, then I would furiously work on it to get it done in time and kick myself for leaving it until the last minute.
@Avidkeo - it sounds like things are going much better and it is great that your DH is being more supportive with your eating/food choices. Mine has never been supportive much - mostly just ignores what I am doing and tries occasionally to coerce me into eating foods I really don't want or need.
@ContraryMaryMary and @cmorning99 - it is crazy to me how expensive digging a well is, I mean seriously... especially if it is just for watering the landscaping.

I did end up going to the gym. Got a tour since I haven't been in 1.5 years since they opened. It was much busier than I expected and tons of young HS kids working out and goofing off. I kept wondering why they weren't in school until it dawned on me that they are still off for the summer. No one had a mask on. I saw one other 'mature' woman walk out with one on but otherwise none. CA has just set the requirement for masks indoors again so we'll see what happens in the next week or so. I ran on the treadmill and it was oh so hard. I can never figure out why it is, I used to think it was the boredom but I wasn't really bored it was just hard. I know there must be a physics answer to that somewhere. I am also just not used to running inside and got so drippy, sweaty too. Found out I have to call and cancel my membership (takes 30 days to take affect) and then I can sign up for the free Silver Sneakers program. In the meantime I can still use the gym. I won't be running indoors again I don't think though. I can't manage running with a mask on.

Had my visit with the ortho doc yesterday. I like him, he looks like a cool surfer dude, longish blonde hair very laid back easy manner. In his picture in the health system (apparently taken a while ago) he looks like a very clean cut Boy Scout and extremely young. He walked in and introduced himself (Hi, I'm Andy!) and I was wondering if he was the doc, an assistant or what 😁 Anyways he explained that I do in fact have a 'traumatic' rotator cuff tear at the top of my shoulder. The bruising the day after on my lower bicep area was from that tear as is the pain I am experiencing in my bicep and lower arm. He said the majority of patients do no feel the pain in the shoulder until someone pushes or manipulates it and to prove his point he demonstrated on me 😖
So I have 3 choices... 1) leave it and manage with OTC pain medications and an occasional steroid shot 2) get an additional MRI to see how much damage there really is since the original MRI was focused on my arm and not the shoulder, then based on that decide 1 or 3 and 3) Just fix it.
    Pros and Cons
    1) Pro - easiest and noninvasive; Con - pain won't likely go away and as scar tissue builds up will likely worsen and range of motion will decline
    2) Pro - better view of the injury; Con - does nothing to help
    3) Pro - permanent fix; Con - invasive procedure with 3-4 month recovery and no running or lifting
I am still unsure what I want to do. I am leaning towards just leaving it. He did say to wait until after my race in September and see how I am doing then.

Hello from the Black hole in Texas!!

    First...I am alive.

Second...I am remiss to have not checked in before this....has it been a month....quite possibly.

Third...I went back like 6 pages but I am sure I have missed some important life events and just plain life stuff. I hope all of you are ok, working through the good and bad and hanging in there.

I have checked out here and a few other places to focus on the month of kid launching. We moved Zach our oldest home from NYC on July 1st. We went on quick family vacation to No. Cal - Mendocino and Sonoma - to enjoy cool ocean air and hot wine tasting.

We then got home, packed up Julia - the youngest - and moved her to Houston on July 16th - and she started Med School at UT McGovern Medical School, on Monday (orientation this week, classes on Monday Aug. 2) We are praying they stay in person and don't go virtual....just kinda ruins medical education at least for hands on labs with cadavers etc).

This past 2 weeks we helped Zach get his life together, get stuff for his apartment, buy a car, etc and we move him to Houston on Sunday to start his MBA at Rice University. I am full of various emotions....hate to see them leave but also want my empty nest back. They are only 3 hours away and I am so happy they are near each other. We will visit them and buy them dinner every now and again.

My dog continues to kill my sleep vibe.....up 2-3 times a night and then sleeps like an old person all day. I am suffering from sleep deprivation and worry about long term effects.....my new focus is sleep. Found the best podcost - The Huberman Lab - by a professor and neurobiologist from Stanford Medical School. Fascinating and enlightening and he gives so many good tips for improving sleep, focus, learning, etc. Check it out.

I am continuing to focus on strength and do my cardio...still dealing with my hip and working with a PT to increase mobility. New challenge - training for a Spartan Race with my Pelo-Pals, in Nashville in October. So I am focusing on upper body, pullup practice (goal to have one pullup before my next birthday) and grip strength. I am either stupid or nuts or both. And hoping to run a 5 K and just work on that length and some speed improvements since high impact stuff just tweaks the hip.

My eating is ok....struggle to get enough protein to support the muscle goals and good carbs to support the fitness. I like my drinks and sugar.....they do not like me hahaha.

I will be back more regularly but I do think of MFP friends often....and just need to launch kid two and find some quite reflection time.

    Cheers!
    Claire

    Good morning folks!

@shanaber How funny we both got the same diagnosis the same day! I am going the wait and see option, but the pain really isn't getting better. I can't take 3-4 months off with all the work on the ranch. Mom never had shoulder surgery, she said they never really work.

We are back in masks today :( They are also limiting movement. If you don't have the vaccine you are stuck to the local area and have to get a pass to go anywhere else. I always was sus on the legality of that rule since the shot is not mandatory, but this Base's leadership DGAF. Guess we will see how far this goes, hopefully nothing shuts down...I am sure the county offices will though LOL

I had a long talk with mom's friend IRT the well. He is the geologist and such fascinating information on soil types and layers and where water goes based on the layers. Evidently we are right on the edge of the basin so that could explain the spotty coverage. The first well lady called me and I made excuses on why I am not signing and hopefully she goes away since I am going to use a different company.

The treadmill guy came out $175 to just look at it! He was shocked at how heavy the thing on top must have been...it bent the metal bars and broke a bunch of plastic underneath. He asked me how much I want it to cost LOL I said $1,000 and they haul it away ....doubtful. I am waiting for his quote to send in. I would probably be happy with $800 and I might have to figure out how to get rid of it...IDK if someone would buy it. It works fine, the screen is near horizontal though.

Getting the car fixed today! Other goal is to figure out how to register the dump trailer with only a sales receipt, no title. Oh and I just remembered I think the gravel pad is going in today, I need to call the contractor. Then I can get the shipping container delivered and start moving stuff out of the way for demo.

Food was good yesterday. I had 500 cals of proteins and veggies for dinner and tummy was rumbling. No exercise.

    Good morning folks!

Oof, my shoulder is aching today! I have not done my PT though, shame shame. It is only 3 small stretches.

The CAR IS FIXED! It took nearly 3 hours and $400 but it runs normally again. He said that the mouse just randomly went up the wire and chomped so there weren't obv chew marks, but needle point mouse tooth holes that went through the internal wires. He was able to repair and replace the endcaps so I am glad. I was talking to the receptionist while I waited and she said the parts shortage is unbelievable. She said you can't even get authentic BMW parts right now, you have to buy generic. The well lady said the same thing.

That was pretty much my whole day yesterday. I was naughty and went to 2 thrift stores that were on the way back from the car place. I told myself if I buy this week, I have to process this week! I think I found 23 items so that is going to be an all evening affair.

I need to get the dump trailer registered. Hopefully just a bill of sale will work. I am going to go down to the satellite DMV today (boss is on leave so I can sneak out :) )

Food was meh. I think I came in at maintenance for calories. While I was waiting for the car I watched a bunch of weight loss videos looking for the miracle cure (I know I know) and it really highlighted how inaccurate calorie counting is. Le Sigh, the only other option is healthy food LOL

    I might go for a walk/jog today.

Do some research on the internet into sources which don’t sell surgery, and find out how likely this particular fix is to actually fix it. When I had a rotator tear I found independent studies reported the surgery suggested to me had like a 33% change of actually improving function, and a substantial rate of people who reported function actually declined. Also, mine did improve with PT and time. Surgeons a) like to believe they are useful and don’t like to think they aren’t and b) have a dog in the fight, aka your money, so they aren’t likely to tell you this stuff, you have to research it yourself.

    shanaber Posts: 6,423 Member
@rheddmobile - yep already started that research and interestingly the studies I have read through pub-med show 85-95% improvement back to normal range of motion, strength, etc. and 93% patient satisfaction, with surgery vs no surgery and PT. However the median age was mid 50's and the results declined with age. Dd thinks I should have the shoulder focused MRI and then decide, but if surgery have it sooner rather than later.

I had a rough run today. It wasn't particularly more miserable out, just felt harder. I did have a good day food wise and really hit my macros for once. Maybe that means my run tomorrow will be better.
Also didn't mention before that my weight at the doctor's office while higher than on my scale (why is this ALWAYS the case?) it was the lowest they have recorded since 2017! Hope I can lose a pound or 2 more before I see my PCP in October.

@shanaber I agree with your DD. If you decide on surgery, sooner rather than later is probably best, esp. since positive results seem to diminish with age.

Sorry for your rough run today. Fingers crossed that tomorrow will be better!

The last couple weeks of July weren't fun. Back at it this month.

I didn't read through everything I missed while on vacation without service.

We got caught in a flash flood. I put together a video from it. https://youtu.be/1K45feTHJac

    Hey all.

Been skimming lately. Concentrating on family atm for obvious reasons. Things are going well, so touch wood it continues.

Foods been good the last couple of weeks and I've lost nearly 3kg (gotta love that water weight loss lol). I'm definitely feeling better with it. So I just keep doing what I'm doing.

    Thinking of you all.

    Good morning!

Wow, flash floods are so crazy! When mom used to pack in the Sierras she would have everything! It could be 100 degrees and then start snowing, and then rain. Glad everyone got out.

Another weekend, another bit of work. Although this weekend I was a bit lazy LOL I went up to Tractor Supply and got some weed killer that I had to register with the EPA  But I have some heavy duty brush coming up...an this stuff was $30 less than Round-Up Pro! The active ingredient is 5% less too than Round-Up...odd. I stopped by the Goodwill to and found a few small things. I then got my hair done! I feel so much better, first time in over a year! I then promptly washed the formula card I have been carrying with me for 3 years with my fav color. I went up to the ranch and worked for a bit but not much.

On sunday my cat actually let me sleep in! Shame on him LOL I started some laundry and finally got up to the ranch by 11:30 LOL. I mean, it wasn't like I had a 1/3 of a giant dumpster to fill be end of day or anything. I worked on emptying the house again. I got through everything but 1 cedar closet. Mom has an old Edison crank record player...I was having fun putting on records, hard to believe it still worked! I want to keep it but it weighs (well the records probably make up 2/3 of the weight) 100lbs. I am not sure what to do with it till we get our house...or how to move it LOL. There isn't anything else I want to keep from the antiques. I threw away so many trinkets and unmarked glass wear. I feel so guilty, but it really seemed like stuff I see en-mass at the goodwill. I 95% filled the dumpster and finally dug deep and started on her bedroom. Unmaking the bed was the hardest. I worked for 5 hours and my feet still have a pulse...again LOL

I might have a buyer for an antique secretaries desk, the fold out front kind. If I do, I will work on the dumpster a bit more since I would have to go up there before I call to get it picked up. They make their money off the hauling fee so it is best to fill it as much as you can.

Didn't track calories this weekend. Weight was the same. I need to go to the post office today so I will probably pick up tacos for lunch.

Nothing huge this week. I go up and see DH next week! A whole week off! What will I do with myself LOL

@RunsOnEspresso That looks scary. Glad you got out of there okay.

You are doing great @Avidkeo and have you focus on what you should have it on. Glad things are going better.

@CMorning99 Sounds like you are making great progress. I would have kept that crank record player too. Hug to you while you go through your mom's things. I know that has to be hard.

I had my annual physical today. I am healthy. The doctor said all of my bloodwork was better than he has seen in at least 2 years from anyone and my HDL is 121, which he said is probably the highest he has ever seen. They are happy if it is 40 or above. He said it is so high because of my running/exercise. He has always been jealous of my HDL numbers since he can't get his above 20. He was impressed that I'm training for the HM and told everyone he saw in the office after he found out.

@RunsOnEspresso - that flood is crazy! Glad you all got through it safely.
@Avidkeo - I am so glad things are going better and focusing on your family is the most important thing for you to do!
@Cmorning99 - that has to be so hard cleaning out your mom's house. I have to say it has made me think about all the things we have (passed own over many generations in my family) that I have assumed my dd would take. I am not really sure though that she is going to want them. Hopefully she will keep our dining table though, it is pretty special.
@quilteryoyo - awesome on your physical today! I love it when my doctor tells me how nice it is to see someone who is so healthy. My HDL has been as high as 90. 121 is fantastic!

I don't have a lot to report. Ate too much heavy food over the weekend. We celebrated Hilde's birthday, she would have been 88, with bbq sausages and sauerkraut and I made a little chocolate cake. The dinner was so salty to me and I spent most of the evening drinking so much water. The cake was interesting - called a Cake Pan Cake and has no dairy or eggs in it. It came out extremely chocolaty, so good! Last night was bbq burgers, nothing bad just heavy. So today was back on track and we had salads for dinner.
We did see the lawyer today to start working through Hilde's will and trust. It feels good to get started on it and understanding all the work that needs to be done - yikes!

@shanaber Thanks. I had a "heavy" food weekend too, at the birthday party for my 2 year old great niece. I wasn't surprised that my weight was up yesterday.

This morning, I realized for the last 2 weeks or so I haven't had time to cook my "healthy" meals. The only thing I recall actually "cooking" was BLT sandwiches. LOL I'm going to concentrate on eating better foods this month. There will still be some BLT's in there, since I have a ready supply of fresh homegrown tomatoes - mom's garden.

Wow! what in the world are you @shanaber and @Avidkeo doing to have such great HDL numbers? Even when I was running, biking and eating right mine was never above 39... Low. I haven't had it checked but started taking omega 3 regularly; hoping it would improve.

The funeral yesterday was "enjoyable". I really love DH's aunt. I am adopting her as my own. I did have an episode of dorkiness, which has me rethinking following up on it all. Classes nearing and I have reservations about trying to fit in doctor appointments. I am in a quandary that I temporarily solve and constantly reevaluate.

Cori is a bad little brother.
He won't play with Bear, who really wants to play romp and chomp. Cori is a dog. Jack, my 12 year old red border collie loves to heard him as he did Goober. I asked Jack last night "where's that cat". He sniffed around in the air and decided he was out the shed, I called, told Jack to "find him". He see's Cori and runs out, nose his Cori's rear directing him back to the house and stands next to him awaiting the acknowledgement of a completed task. I got jack when he was out 8-10 weeks old from a family that raises herding dogs (border collies). He's only ever herded the cats. I used this example to show DH how much of "personality" comes from genetics; related to the debate we had the other day. Jack needs something to heard, but I dont want more animals to care for, and he's 12. His daughter is useless as a working dog, she is too much cocker spaniel, sweet but utterly useless, barely minds and constantly wanders out of the yard if the fence is down. Jack will not. I am rather proud of my Jackie-boy. DD says he's got poo brains. LOL! ya, sometimes... I wonder how much work a few mini horses are... but I dont wanna support the adulteration of genetics/health of an animal because it makes it "cute". Maybe mini cows, or a mini *kitten* (sure that will be censored.- mini donkey, I guess is the same thing). Anyway, he'd love a few of them.

    Good morning!

Nothing going on for a change!

@swenson19d So true about genetics. Mom had McNab cattle dogs and they lost their damn mind if they smelled cows. Never were trained though. The pups she got a year and half a go were from the the same line (nieces of moms old guys) and completely different. Breeder turned the line a bit to more of a hunting dog...they had no desire to herd but all they wanted to do was chase squirrels and had a bit of an aggressive streak. Too bad, the original line was so good. I still have 2 mini-horses on the ranch. They aren't much work but the vet bills are the same as a big horse LOL

Yesterday was super slow. I sent an email to the treadmill guy asking for the quote, he never responded. I hope I didn't just hand over $175 for nothing. He does work on base so hopefully I can get him. I would like to get it all in before I go out of town on Saturday.

I put 3 workouts out in my calendar yesterday, 3 walk/run peloton app 20 min sessions.

Food, has not been bad, but gave up on calories again. I just have so little faith in that I am guessing right. Especially since I eat at the chow hall for lunch everyday and they have calories on the menus but who knows.

Scale is still not moving...but not going up.

PT this AM for shoulder. Still hurts. They are talking about a steroid shot but I don't like the possible side effects. Mom got one in her hand and they hit the tendon itself and the tendon broke. Maybe it will just stop hurting at some point.
