Back from Power Books. It was only me helping for a bit and then a couple arrived. They are only open 10-2 MTW now so it limits when I can go.

Pouring rain here now so I wasn't able to pick up flower pots and the cemetery like I planned today. Hopefully tomorrow…

I did a retirement zoom and am planning to call one of the ladies tonight so we can visit privately. She has the update on our friend that has pancreatic cancer. Julie and I haven't talked in awhile so it will be nice to check in with her.

I hope you are all well.

All packed for our weekend visiting friends down near Detriot. Russ and I will drive to The Detroit Institute of Arts first, have Detroit pizza at Buddy's, then head to Melissa and Rob's home in the suburbs. Friday we will go to Greenfield Village (Ford Museum, etc) and then spend the rest of the weekend hanging out with our friends. They work Thursday and Friday and the kids are in school so we will do our site seeing then. Hockey game for one of the boys on Saturday and come home Sunday. I will not check in again until early next week.

Still warm and humid in MI. I'm ready for Fall cooler temps. I need to get yard stuff and gardens cleaned up when we get back.

    Have a nice weekend.

Sunday we had a meeting after church for planning for our Missions Conference that is coming up end of October into November. I told myself repeatedly NOT to volunteer to decorate for the banquet we do on the Saturday evening. Guess who's decorating for the banquet? 🤪

I found an idea of a center piece that uses mason jars (I have some I want to get rid of) and sunflowers. I decided to do brown tablecloths and yellow napkins. You always hope the idea in your head comes out and looks good at the end!

This Saturday is a double baby shower for two ladies in my church who are both having boys next month. It's the second for one (her first is the cutest little girl!) and for the other it's her first.

I hope your centerpieces turn out well. They sound cute!

Safe trip J. How long of a drive is Detroit?

I made the relatively short trip to Wayne last night to see the folks and give my mom here birthday flowers and present, and even that made me hate being in the car (about three hours). I am not a good traveler. I can sure see the aging and declining on them. I tried to do what I could to help out a bit. Brought in a 40-pk of water and put in their cupboard, took out the garbages, cleaned up what I could. But it needs so much more. Last year mom was excited to get a cleaning lady, but I guess dad didn't like it. Of course not. He wants us to do it. They had to put dad's horse down last week too I guess. Obviously, dad is broken-hearted about it. He put more time and effort in them than he did us. I'm sad they are sad, but not sad the horse is done. They couldn't handle the demands of caring for that thing (driving back and forth four times a day to the farm to let him in and out of the barn, feed, etc.). Especially since dad is all swollen again, maybe he'll spend a little more time doing what he is supposed to try to deal with. Unlikely. I hate this so much. They need help of some sort but Michele isn't 'ready' to push it and I'm not going to the 'good' one and kill myself driving up there multiple times a week.

I was getting a wedding card together for someone on Bernie's side of the family (part of the group that have not treated me/boys well) but I am trying to stick with my goal to send appropriate cards. As I was searching for the address b/c Bernie threw that away I am doing 'google research' and the address I come up with is some million dollar home. I'm like, huh, two new college grads probably can't be living there it must be wrong. More 'research' nope, he's dentist - that is most likely their digs. At first I was thinking I needed to send $200 in my weird way of trying to 'buy' that sides affection even though they have been terrible (and the bride was obviously not part of it) - but now I'm like. Hmmmm… a dentist, he is making bank - no matter what I send it's probably going to seem cheap based on their living. Do I drop it back to $100. Mental gymnastics overload. Overthinking I wish you paid. I'd make bank.

Bleh. Looking forward to a volleyball game in a few hours.

    Later friends.

The Blue Jays won the AL East title!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! First time in 10 years!!!!!!!!!! Now just to keep doing what they are doing and make it to the World Series!

I haven't had a working dryer in a month. I text my landlord on Thursday evening and when he responded on Friday he told me he had a hectic month and had forgotten. Um. My washer/dryer is right beside his washer/dryer, has he not been doing laundry for a month???? The top of it has been open exposing the drum unit! (It needs a new belt.)

I am off today from work (Monday). Tomorrow (Tuesday) is our office is closed for National Truth and Reconciliation Day. A nice 4 day weekend.

We had a nice weekend at our friends near Detroit. Russ and I enjoyed Greenfield Village and had perfect weather and low crowds. The art institute was ok but not spectacular as we had heard it was.

    Congrats to your team, Angela.

Marla, I hope your parents are ok. It is an emotional journey watching over aging parents.

Beautiful weather here, 70's. We are off to work out at the gym at the reservation. Then I need to gather my plant pots and deal with my garden this week. My sister and I are riding a trail a couple of hours south of here tomorrow. I need to get some exercise. The scale is creeping up and I need to stop the sugar intake!

    Have a nice day!

There were so many cherry tomatoes ready to pick. I have a colander full so Russ is going to make home made marinara sauce for spaghetti tonight. Last pick I roasted some, vacuumed sealed and froze for soups and chilies this winter. I actually picked several carrots, multi colored. They are probably a little big but I hope they taste alright. I gathered all my flower pots and Russ dumped them on the back acreage for me.

My sister Becky and I rode the bike trail an hour south of us. It is an old railroad made in to a paved trail that goes to a city, Grand Rapids, a couple of hours south of us. It was very straight but the scenery was beautiful. Wetlands, forest, rolling farmland and pops of Fall color. We agreed to go 20 miles one way, turn around and 20 miles back. We made the 40 miles but both of us were so tired, had sore butts, and could barely move when we got back to the car. I'm sure I burned hundreds of calories but we probably over did it. I had an awful leg cramp when watching TV last night. It was in my thigh and I had to massage and stretch. I kept drinking water and it went away. I slept well last night!

I was planning to go to Power Book Bags today but am rethinking that plan. I don't know that I want to sit and do repetitive actions such as stickering books or standing and packing books. I'll see how I feel after my coffee. I may just go to my favorite farm stand and buy a spaghetti squash so I can make a dish for myself with that. Russ won't eat it.

I hope you are having a good week. Our Fall weather is beautiful although I would prefer chillier temps.

    four day weekend? Lucky you!

I wanted to try roasting tomatoes this year, but got no tomatoes. I got some from work but just enough to eat.

Big volleyball game tomorrow night. Grudge match against Penn St

I need to get on with a keyboard to try to get into new work drama. Too much for my thumbs

long story - trying to shorten - Nebraska has a new law that employers that:

Nebraska's paid sick leave law, the Healthy Families and Workplaces Act, went into effect on October 1, 2025, following voters' approval of a ballot initiative in November 2024. The law

requires employers to allow employees to accrue and use paid sick time for personal or family health needs, up to a cap of 40 or 56 hours per year, depending on employer size

Which I feared would just become our vacation. But even worse. For example for me at 8 to 14 years, I had 120 vacation hours and 24 personal hours (which I used whatever needed in there for appointments). At 15 years (in less than six months) I was looking at going to 160 vacation hours and the 24 personal hours. The 24 personal hours was all employees. They have changed from loading personal at January 1 and vacation at anniversary, to removing all personal hours from all employees and adjusting all the other hours to being called 'paid time off', accruing, not being able to use above accrual and lowering the overall amount. The very bottom of hires did increase a bit because they had to go up to 56 hours, but I towards the top lost 24 hours. I'm so mad and sad. Continuing to de-incentivize 'seniority'. Wages have been stagnant for going on two years due to financials and we will have a 20% benefit price increase in a couple of months. And the way they worded it like we couldn't figure out we lost hours and flexibility. Using complying with the law to make things worse. It's not illegal, it's just *kitten*.

Primary doc appointment went ok. He somewhat was ok with me wanting to go another year not taking a statin. I am going to focus on my eating, hopefully. I have been increasing fiber, but now am struggling not getting a deficit as I watch my weight creep up. Gah.

Very warm still this week - 90's!! I want cool, brisk, fall weather. Not sweaty, not snow. 50's to 60's. Dream on.

  • jrbanta
    jrbanta Posts: 4,588 Member

Marla, can you use up hours you've earned before Jan 1 so you get their benefit? That really stinks!

I've been comtemplating keeping a food journal for a bit. I know I'm ingesting too much sugar and if I have to document, I will be more disciplined not eating it. Increasing fiber means increasing fluids so your digestion still works regularly. Scale can appear to be increasing but it is less regularity. Isn't it frustrating to gain so easily and lose so slowly?

Even though our temps are lower than yours, I agree that brisk Fall weather would be welcome. I'm still wearing shorts and capris. It's great temps for yard clean up but it doesn't feel like Fall.

I went down to the basement to get some paper products. A big chubby mouse was dead in a trap. They are starting to come in before winter. I keep mentioning to Russ to set lots of traps down there. Hopefully he will in the next couple of days. Ugh!

Tomorrow I am going with two friends from Power Books to vintage/thrift shopping and out to lunch. Russ and I bought tickets to a concert at the local theater in Suttons Bay for tomorrow night.

I hope your weekend is great!

I was feeling discouraged this morning and told myself a run would help. So unlike other times, I did just that. I went for a 6km run. I didn't get out for my run until 10:30 and I had been up since 8am. All I had before my run was coffee. Nothing to eat. I didn't expect it to go as well as it did. Maybe the hat helped me. Lets go Blue Jays!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Successful game of murder ball last night! The ladies took to Rec Hall and thumped Penn St in their own house. 25-6; 25-15 and 25-13. It was a beautiful thing. They reverse swept us twice last year including taking us out in the final four. So, it was good to see the ladies come out with the fire. It was spicy and I was here for it. Fast turn around to take on Rutgers tonight. Hopefully they can process all that adrenaline and not take the night off. No nights off in the Big 10. GBR baby.

You both are enjoying your sports. I haven't taken time to watch vball yet.

Today I shopped at vintage/refurbished shops with a young friend and then we met another mutual friend for lunch at an Italian restaurant. In a little bit, Russ and I will go the concert in town at the theater.

It is very hot here for our county, high 80's today. I want crisp, cool days!

I finally got my dental implant!!!! It's been a longer then normal process but I finally have it.

I am currently up watching my Jays. If they win tonight they win the series. They are currently winning 2-1 in the 6th. I am going myself to 10:30 and then I need to turn off the game and go to bed. I have to work tomorrow!

It's finally below 80 - but I want lower! It's October - no more grass growing.

Work is extra-fried insane. Fiscal year-end is October 24 and we have the annual bank audit. The realignment of the team last year split off a few into only being 'inventory control' vs inventory being a part of each of the teams duties - and well the inventory group is struggling in my opinion. I have raising flags for weeks about issues I am seeing and that they aren't far enough along in getting ready but no one wanted to hear it. This week has exposed a lot of the things I was trying to point out and now some of the others are starting to get worried. I don't think they will be able to get fully recovered at this point, but we'll see. But it's going to be ROUGH. And it's been rough. Oh, and in answer to your question Jenny - no the new PTO policy took effect the day after they announced it. There is no grace period.

Next week is cardiologist appointment. I think it will go fine, but will be glad to be done. The week after that is supposed to be dermatologist, but I think I am going to push it back to next spring. I am weary of all the appointments I have had recently.

    Volleyball tonight against Washington. GBR.

Marla, glad your temps are dropping. We are in the 50's to very low 60's now. I love it. I hope conditions and communication at work improve for you but it does sound pretty dysfunctional. No effective leadership since that merger you had a couple of years ago.

Angela, congratulations to your Blue Jays. They are doing well. The Tigers lost so it's up to your team now.

Russ and I are going to the 2nd annual Power Book Bags fundraiser later today at a winery. I am going to buy a couple of raffle tickets to try to win another ebike. I don't need it but would be fun to have for guests or myself as I age. It is very different from the one I have. Lighter, a throttle if needed, etc.

I roasted two spaghetti squash yesterday and am baking a veggie spaghetti squash casserole in the oven for me to enjoy during this next week. Veggies, herbs, garlic, squash and parmesan…

Russ is out moving the lawn for the last time, hopefully. Tomorrow I will clean out the garden, put in some new soil and compost. Put mulch around the strawberry plants for the winter. Still time to do all this but need to start. I also have to prune some perennials that do better with Fall pruning.

    Happy weekend!

The time difference when they Jays go to Seattle for starting on game 3 is going to be hazardous to my sleep. It will be a 4 hour time difference! When they play them during the regular season, those games usually don't start until 11pm - past bed time!

Thanksgiving is Monday here. My brother and his family went away for the weekend so a friend invited me over today to join them for their dinner. I am stuffed to the gills. I also don't want to move right now. I ended running 10km this morning, My friends drive me home but I went for a few groceries first and then came home. I was turning into my driveway when I realized I had forgotten (again) Wesley's food he's out of!!!!!!!!!!! I am a bad cat mom. I put away what I had gotten and went back out the door to get his food (Mind you I don't drive so all this is on foot.) I'm over 22,000 steps for the day. I'm tired!

Happy Thanksgiving Angela! I hope you can stay awake for your game when the time comes.

How far is the store where you shop for food? Great way to get your exercise if you are walking.

Today I cleaned out my garden tubs, removed some soil and replaced with new soil and compost. I need to get more soil and compost since I under estimated what I needed. I still need to winterize the strawberry plants and cut back some of my perennials that need Fall pruning. I'm tired so I will pace myself over the next week.

Russ worked on exterior house repairs and he is tired too. Luckily retirement allows us to spread out the work over several days/weeks.

My veggie spaghetti squash casserole is yummy.

I can see one grocery store from my living room window. The other one is straight across the street from it. There is a major road between me and them, so it's about a 5 minute walk to the first one and about 10 minutes to the other one.

The Jays sadly lost last night. I hope they win tonight! The game times for when they go to Seattle came out and surprised me. The latest start time (in my time zone) is 9:30. There will be some late bus times, but those later bus times still get me to work on time. Just on time. I prefer the earlier one that gets me to work at least 15 minutes before my scheduled start time.

I bought a small turkey breast to cook myself a little turkey dinner today. Now that the day is here and I am alone, I can't bring myself to actually cook it. My brother will be home later today, but I didn't want a huge turkey dinner that late at night. I don't usually have huge supper meals. I surprised one person when I said that, but I work all day and don't get home to a little before 6pm. I don't want to be cooking a huge meal that late at night, as that makes it so late when I can actually eat.

Those stores are nice and close for you. I'm glad you will be able to watch your game too.

We just chose birthday presents for our youngest grand daughter Ellis. She will turn 3 yrs old on 10/27. We sent her an Elsa (Frozen) hairbrush with hair clips that have Frozen characters on them. We also sent her a Melissa and Doug wooden puzzle set with 4 animal puzzles, interlocking pieces. Halen's birthday will be 12/14 and she will turn 5 yrs old! I saw a cute karoake machine with two mics and a large Kindergarten workbook with early math, writing…skills. Chantrelle, Mother, likes the girls to have learning gifts and not too many small pieces. Their Christmas gifts will be a large magna tile set (they build all day and need more tiles) and baby doll carriers to carry their dolls. They stuff them down their shirts as of now, LOL! Now I need to ask FL DIL what the kids would like for Christmas this year.

My garden is ready for winter but I need to put leaves on top of strawberry plants but they haven't fallen off the trees yet. By the weekend I will have all my garden ornaments put away too. Getting ready for the beginning of winter.

I went to my water aerobics class today. It was a very good workout and I treated myself and my sore muscles to the hot tub jets afterward.

I am making goulash for dinner tonight. This is a college recipe from my grad school room mate who was on a tight budget. We would make a big pot and eat it all week. The kids and Russ have always loved this recipe. It is Fall comfort food…

I got together with a friend I had not seen in over 40 years this week. It was so nice to see her, have dinner and talk for 5 hours at her place. She and her husband may move up here from NC. It would be great to have another friend here.

I volunteered at Power Book Bags on Thursday for 3 hours. Friday I went to my new water workoutere class. We worked a lot on arms and legs. It felt so good. Too bad I don't lose weight or inches… this next week I am signed up for 4 classes, three water and one yoga.

Today I went with 3 of my cousins to the No Kings protest in Traverse City. I was a little nervous but it felt safe and was very well attended. There had to be 1000 to 2000 people there with signs, in animal costumes driving the main street honking horns at us and our signs, etc. There were speakers and it was a very positive gathering. It is encouraging to me that many people see the craziness of this current administration and are willing to show up to protest what is going on in this country. I would go to another one. Russ did not go. He has difficulty with standing too long on his shattered ankles so I'm guessing he did not want to be in pain. His feet have been hurting lately.

Marla, is inventory completed? How did it go?

Hey all - good on you for showing up for the NK in your area. I don't know if there were any around here, but even if there was I would have been too chicken to go. I'm too scare to even voice a dissent on FB. But I feel it in my heart and have actually done the really scary thing and said some things to family members about some of concerns about the insanity. Which in and of itself is way big for me.

You are becoming quite the spokesperson for MI. It seems like you are drawing more and more of your friends to your area. So fun!

Work is asinine. This time of year is always hard, but the changes to our benefits is awful, and so many other things. Here is one of things that just sent me over the edge this. There is a lot of history to try to condense, but Behlen Mfg started as a family business many years ago, was bought out a couple of times and at the time a group called Wickes owned it was doing very poorly. Tony Raimondo Sr (TR) and two others bought out Wickes about 40 years and 'returned Behlen to local ownership' and revamped and worked on building it into what it was. Many of the folks like my sister and many others who believed in how it was being led and gave their blood, sweat and tears for decades making it what it became. Anyway one of the core beliefs for TR was eliminating time clocks and implementing an honor policy. Obviously you still have to have a way to track and pay people, but it was done with the ERP system. Hourly folks had to utilize the

  • mizpaden74
    mizpaden74 Posts: 3,991 Member

'mobile clients', the scanners that contain the system to scan onto work orders. That was the basis for the payroll. While I was not/am not payroll, I was the link between. Making sure all the scanning looks good, is uploaded and hitting work orders and inventory correctly. A big part of the system is that is where all the job costing, efficiencies, overhead etc is coming from. Because most of the folks on the floor are direct labor, therefore if they don't get scanned into work orders they going to become overhead. Which hourly folks should not be overhead. So with all the deaths and new leadership and the True North bs - and our current ERP system being declared no longer an option - one of the things that happened was the implementation of time clocks and moving straight to pulling payroll from the the time clock scannings. So last week was the first week of the not getting the payroll hours from the ERP system (which still has to be maintined for inventory, job costing, overhead, manufacturing, etc.) - and the number of hours different between what payroll pulled vs what was scanned was staggering. Now I don't have a way to compare anymore - and payroll did pull a list of the differences but even at the end of the week they still hadn't gotten everyone to respond on where they were missing scanning in the manufacturing side. And the really insane part, is they won't do after last week because they had to pull each folk separately. I exploded in an email to my leadership, how is this what leadership wants? They have gone to a system with no back-checking and you can see the proof of folks not scanning correctly (this has been my job for 15 years). Why am I the only one who sees the problem? Eventually accounting is going to go - huh, why is overhead so high all of the sudden, why are all these projects getting amazing variances? And why have I bothered to spend the last 15 years doing this? Crickets. Nothing. It won't be until months down the road that someone decides its not ok and then what? I can keep up with it weekly, but I can't undo weeks of it. Again, what the actual fluff? Gah, just trying to type this (and obviously there's more) is making me upset and stressed out and defeated. You know, I drank the freakin' koolaid and believed in what I did and it's just another bullet to soul of, yeah, you're nothing,

This is the week of fiscal year end and the bank auditors will be here Friday. They will also be in Mcgregor TX branch and their inventory/manufacturing team has been on vacation for two weeks (no clue why leadership allowed that) and everytime I tried to work with their plant manager about issues I was seeing, he just shrugged and said it would have to wait. They have it in hand. I'm like cool. I hope everyone, including our team gets roasted. I have trying to flag our team (leadership) that we are not ok ok either and getting no where. I can't believe I'm rooting against us. That's messed up I know, and I will feel bad if they do well - which is also messed up - but I watched the amount of time and work my formed folks put into the audits to make them successful and I will gag if this lackadasical, we'll just b.s. our way through it flies. Fluff all ya'll.

Of course being home is not much better - Bernie has to be able to see how upset I am, but he just ignores me or snaps at me when I say anything. Which is why I keep going back, because I can't give up pay just in case I finally choose me. Which, I know I won't. Remember, bok-bok chicken.

I have a goulash recipe that I got from my grandma that was a staple in college too. I'm sure it's not really goulash, but that's what we called it and back then (yikes over 30 years ago) hamburger was cheap. I had some smaller potatoes I needed to do something with - so I boiled them a bit and them smashed them on a pan and roasted until they looked brown and then put some parm cheese on and roasted some more. I saw something like it online. They're pretty good. They would be better with the even smaller potatoes. And a good sauce. I love sauce.

Hey Ang, Happy After Tgiving for ya. It's definitely not walkable for us living 5 to 10 miles from most common things. But thankful for the 'easy'-ish drive. Smaller town. Still stupid drivers, but not as many.

Volleyball to distract with this afternoon. GBR ladies.

I've been running on adrenaline for the last few days. The Jays games started so late and I stayed up to watch them. How I still got up by 5:30 the next day I don't know. They have to win tonight or they are eliminated from the play offs.

I need to get back into my running. I need to break my "doomsday" scrolling again on social media. I need to get away from those things and back into the things I enjoy. I've been "scrolling" and not doing by piano and voice practice - which is only detrimental to me and my learning.

Angela, how did your team do?

Marla, you have a large amount of stress at work. I'm sorry it is not going well. I know you have said you have limited options where you live to change jobs. Any prospects and are you watching the ads or have your info on Indeed? You still have a lot of years ahead of you until retirement and being miserable in a job and with a company that doesn't appear to value its employees and their knowledge can be draining.

I don't think my "goulash" recipe is really goulash. It is American style with hamburger and ground pork, noodles, etc.

My outside chores are done until Spring! Yay! Today Russ burned a lot of his wood scraps in the fire pit and we sat by the fire, talked, then roasted hotdogs and had dinner outside. Beautiful day but crisp temps. This morning we worked out at the gym at the reservation.

My friend Kathy dropped off a box of Honey Crisp apples from their farm. Today I made an apple salad with chopped apple, celery, grapes, dried cranberries, pecans and the dressing. It was crisp and tasty with the hotdogs, baked beans, and Mac 'n Cheese for an early dinner.

Our Fall color is at peak and is absolutely gorgeous! I love this time of year.
