I've watched some episodes mainly while recovering from a shattered wrist. Some of it was relateable to me, like using food as a "drug of choice" to numb the feelings and trauma from abuse. Other parts were very hard for me to watch, like people who were essentially bed-ridden and killing themselves but their families kept…

First, no, many people do lose weight through lifestyle changes and keep it off. But also weight loss surgery is a medical intervention so it is studied medically. People who simply decide to give MFP a try, without their doctor even suggesting it (like in my case) aren't being studied, unless we seek out the weight loss…

I have not had it, but would have been a candidate... I have two friends who are getting it, who are determined and don't want to hear anything negative about it, who are in the same category I was--BMI under 40 but with sleep apnea or other health issue. I do wish they'd try this first as I've had such success with it,…

Constantly and rather ineffectively--as I gained, while taking steroids he prescribed, he kept suggesting Jenny Craig or low carb diets, which weren't going to work for me. I found MFP through friends and so far this is working.

I think it's a kind of back-handed compliment, like thin is seen as good, but they say it in a negative way... I dunno, an extreme example would be instead of saying "wow, you look great!" the person says "you look good, did you get some work done?" Or something like "your hair looks better now." It's kind of a compliment,…

Thanks. She is so vain, she's already had botox and a facelift, and chin lift.... Sigh. I get the constant "you're so heavy I just worry you'll get diabetes..." or "I talked to your grandfather and he said you'll lose the weight when you're ready, but ...." and "you're not wearing ANY MAKEUP AT ALL?!?!" and so on... Sigh

If I could do *anything* to change my mother's behavior in any way, I would have done it already. I have considered restraining orders....
-
Thanks guys! Yes, my mother is obnoxious... I've reached peace with the idea I won't change her behavior toward me, but acting like this to my husband is a bit too far! I was just wondering if people felt like sometimes it's ok in terms of a compliment or if it's always a bad idea? I mean, you wouldn't want to say to…

Me too! I created my account here and MFP suggested it and I was like "ok"--didn't even know you could get all creative with it.

When I was a kid there was a girl across the street who was a terrible bully. Then one day her dad went nuts and was holding her hostage in the house at gunpoint while the cops surrounded it. After they took him away she became a very nice person. At current house a neighbor pulled a gun on my husband because he walked our…

Seems you live next door to my dad...

It might be psychological, but I feel more vulnerable as the weight is coming off. If I engaged in eating to bury my emotions, they seem to be coming un-buried as the weight comes off.

Thanks everyone! I've been vegan a long time now, but in order to meet my calorie goals I've cut down a lot on the volume of food I'm eating and trying to cut out most of the non-nutrient-dense calories, like desserts or chips, so I can use those calories on proteins, etc. But I did think I was getting a decent amount of…

Hey, good memory! Yes, I am vegan. Good thoughts on the lysine. I upped my soy intake and started putting pumpkin seeds on my salads to meet the protein, but when I'm restricting amounts to make a calorie goal, that could mean some amino acids are low. As for the breakdown, I get 1270 calories a day but get more from…

Thanks, I'll ask her. I'm not sure if she did or not.
-
Thank you. Sorry for others who experience this, but good to know I'm not alone!

Wow! Great work!

That's got to be hard. Can you bring along some healthy foods to eat instead when you have a craving?

I had a bad flu and stopped trying to lose weight or exercise (still had to go to work and take care of everyone though) and put more energy into healing. Got back on track when I felt a little better.

Nope, it's my ethics. I choose what I can live with and what I can't. Others make their own choices. There are things I do that aren't ideal in an ideal world--drive a car for example. But I reached a point in my own life where I couldn't eat animals any longer and it was the right choice for me for so many reasons. I'm…

Amy8Lyn--I feel you for sure! I've been vegan for 20 years. I would have given myself a coronary years ago if I hadn't been able shrug and say "ok, that's how you feel" and walk away from it. I've had people get right in my face, in person, and say "I hate vegans" (dude, how can you hate me, you don't even know me) and…

Is ranting and preaching a form of exercise. If I do it can I eat some extra calories.

Salad ideas--I wash and chop enough mixed greens to last a few days for me--I use several lettuces and watercress, sometimes arugula. I grate carrots to last several days. I chop cucumbers for several days. Day of: I measure 2 cups of salad greens, 1/2 cup grated carrots, 1/2 cup cucumbers, then I cut cherry tomatoes in…

Yeah, I know that the one pound = 3500 calories thing is inexact at best, but you say you gained 12 pounds from one meal and managed to lose 2 resulting in a net gain of 10 that hasn't gone away in over 2 months.... Even if it only takes 3000 calories for you to gain a pound you'd need to eat 36000 to gain 12 pounds. No…

The good side for me, as I did go to a wedding with an open bar a few weeks back, is that one of my lupus medications can't mix with alcohol, so no temptation there at all. The bad side though is no alcohol, even when I really want a glass of wine.... Some people say they aren't as strict on it, but I worry a lot about…

I hate it when I go hiking and someone is smoking on the trail. Vaping has created a funny thing where I can be in early morning commuter traffic and someone near me rolls down a window and clouds of smoke/vapor billow out..... Looks like it came out of a 1990s rap video...

Scary. Thanks for sharing this. I massively reduced sodium due to my blood pressure--the dr didn't tell me to, I just did it as part of my diet plan--and last time I saw the cardiologist he told me I wasn't getting enough salt and to start eating more salt. I asked "I thought salt was bad for blood pressure?" and he…

PS yes, I have a weight problem

I never forget. I'm starving by then. But a few times I've been forced to postpone it until I'll just wait for dinner, due to work. But mostly, even if work is busy, I'm starving and find a way to eat my lunch.

Great ideas. I'm actually moving mid-month, so I'll see if I can find the scale afterward! Hope you like the new place!
