  • Busy, busy day!! Celebration of life this morning for a dear choir member who passed 3 weeks ago at age 91. My daughter and I both sang in choir this morning. My daughter pulled double duty and also served as crucifer. Then we went to lunch and my weekend of driving for everybody began. I took my mom to visit her former…
  • That sounds accurate. Half your body weight is the number the dietician told my daughter’s dance class too. She also said that number was for “normal” hydration. The amount should be increased for a cardio workout or weight loss. Connie in KY
  • I started strength training about 4 weeks into my weight loss journey. I realized I needed to muscle tone or the saggy skin was going to get worse. I met with the trainer at my gym. He went through and specifically picked what he thought would help. I think it has. On the nights I lift I do 30 minutes of cardio. On…
  • A senior center or possibly a hospital volunteer group. One of the hospitals here makes keepsake quilts for their hospice patients. If there is a sewing or craft store in your neighborhood, they may be able to help. When I lived in Ohio I took some things that were beyond my capabilities to a lady in one of the Amish…
  • @bwcetc - my mom was diagnosed with advanced breast cancer at age 81. I hope I’m wrong, but I think surgery and recovery are going to be very difficult for her because of the mild stroke she had in February. Then again, she’s kind of like the Energizer Bunny!
  • My mom and I talked about her diagnosis tonight. I think she is putting on a brave face, but deep inside there is a lot of regret for not saying something sooner. Her current view is that she is almost 81, has had a great life, and her grandkids are nearly adults. In some ways I feel the same way, but she’s my mom and best…
  • I set small goals for myself too. I have to see something attainable. Ultimately I would like to be around 160, but I need short term goals and milestones along the way. Connie in KY
  • Janetr - I hope things improve for your family. That wreck looked awful! Allie - I hope things don’t totally explode at work. That stinks to find your job posted on zip recruiters! I talked to the radiologist who did my mom’s biopsy. We have a referral to the surgeon on August 13. Mom seems very at peace with this. Connie…
  • I felt this way about my dad. I loved him because he was my father, but I did not like his behavior. He was a very cruel person when he was drinking (which was most of the time). He was extremely condescending to everybody. I could never measure up, and it didn’t help that their first child was a boy who died slightly…
  • I’ve been asked multiple times if I was ill/dying. Loose skin in the face/neck isn’t exactly flattering. One person who is rather large asked me why I would even want to lose weight. To her, it implied that I was unhappy and could no longer freely eat. I mentioned to an acquaintance that I wanted to lose at least 45 more…
  • So the bra shopping was interesting. I was totally wrong on the size. I needed smaller than I thought. That was happy moment #1. My daughter and I go in, armed with $100 in Lane Bryant gift cards, and immediately get asked if I want to sign up for the giveaways they are having. I sign up, but I didn’t win the first…
  • I got to the point where I had to get new bras. I’m really picky and struggle to find what I like. I went to Lane Bryant because I’ve been a DDD forever, and I had $100 in gift cards from last year. So I go in, grab some I think will fit and head to the dressing room. On the way the sales clerk asks if I want to sign up…
  • Holy cow my backside is so flat I have the same problem!! The phone always made my pants sag a bit, but losing weight and they will come all the way down!!! I guess it’s a great problem to have, but I don’t want to be arrested for indecent exposure!! Connie in KY
  • The use (overuse) of plastic - it’s a huge issue. Refrigerator/leftover storage is primarily in Pyrex. Not totally thrilled by plastic lids, but that does allow for stacking. I love to be able to pop off the lid and stick the bowl in the oven/microwave. Lunch is usually in Gladware. If I take bread in a ziplock bag, I will…
  • I don’t know if there is any proof behind this, but somebody told me it takes 20 lbs before you notice a difference, 30-40 lbs before your family and close friends see a difference, and 50-60 lbs before people who see you less often notice a difference. Personal experience - I started at 268. I was probably at 245 when my…
  • Connie - ((big hugs)) <3 I'm guessing mom's health right now means your sis being in a hurry to sell the house (if I'm remembering right) will take a back seat - at least until you get a better handle on what's coming? Lanette[/quote] Lanette - the house is not going on the market. There are a multitude of reasons, but the…
  • Thank you for everybody’s kind words about my mom’s diagnosis. She had biopsies done today. We already know it is cancer, but this will let the doctors know our treatment options. She tolerated the procedure well and is home resting. My sister is currently sober and staying with her today. We find out more next week. Just…
  • I also have type 2 diabetes. I’m on metformin which made me feel very hungry at first. I strongly suggest meeting with a diabetes educator/registered dietitian. It helped me so much. In 6 months I have lost almost 50 lbs and have good control of my blood sugars. Hang in there!! You can do this! Connie in KY
  • July was not a good month. My goal was to lose 6-8 lbs. I lost 4 lbs and was sidelined for a week with a gout attack. All better now and back to the gym. I made it 15 minutes on the elliptical tonight. July was not good for my mom. She had a bad fall and still has some soreness. She spent a day in the ER being treated for…
  • I am definitely an introvert. I engage in conversation only after I truly get comfortable with people. I can handle things like family gatherings or a dinner with church choir members, but I’m terrified of new situations. I know that sounds really weird from a college instructor who talks for hours to a class, but I have…
  • SW: 268 November 2018 CW: 207.8 GW: 195, then I establish a new goal July was going well, but then I had a gout attack 10 days ago. Crazy super painful, so no real exercise for 6 days. I had so much swelling in my foot and lower leg that I gained 6 pounds. The swelling has subsided, and I can move my toe again. The weight…
  • Our city has a summer program called “Cultural Days”. Kids from infancy to age 18 can get a pass at the library to visit a multitude of places free over the summer. One adult gets a free admission too. We’ve been to several museums on our pass, but today we are volunteering at the dance school to give some time back. It’s…
  • The weather has been weird all over the world. Around the first of July, the weather people here said we had rain 22 out of 24 weekends. We have had several minor and one moderate flooding event on the river this year. July hits and we have had very little rain suddenly. It was over 90 degrees for 3 weeks. A cold front…
  • I went out to dinner with high school friends tonight!! We had a great time! It was nice to get a night out to myself. I had salad with grilled chicken for dinner. Salad was very crisp and fresh, but the chicken was a little dry. Anyway, it was great to connect with old friends! Kind of felt bad about not eating with my…
  • I joined Planet Fitness in February. I did it because I knew I needed more than walking, and I don’t walk in extreme weather (cold, hot or wet). Louisville has been wet or hot from months on end. I really like my location, and it has kept me more active when I would have hung it up when it got hot! I love that 15-18 year…
  • I went back to the gym tonight. I couldn’t go my usual pace on the treadmill, but I gave it a good 5 minute warm up before doing some lifting. After weights I hit the recumbent bike without issue. I tried the arc trainer, and I think it will work too until the soreness and stiffness goes away! I’m so happy to be back in…
  • Welcome aboard!! I struggle with primarily a desk job and time. I’m still raising a non-driving aged teen so I’m still playing chauffeur!! Connie in KY
  • I work in hospital lab too! Well, I did until I decide I wanted to teach in an MLT program. Congrats on the first 8 pounds and welcome to the group!! Connie in KY
  • You fit right in with group! We are at various phases of weight loss and maintenance. I was down almost 60 lbs, but I gained about 5 back with my recent bout of gout. It hurt too much to go to the gym. I have a minimum of 40 more pounds to go, but I really need to dump another 60. Welcome to the group! You’ll get to know…
  • Evelyn - the baby blanket is beautiful. I managed to crochet a duck for Hannah, but that was as far as I got! I think the foot is well enough to cycle tonight. I didn’t decrease my calories enough while I couldn’t exercise. I’m embarrassed to say I gained 6 lbs in a week. This has got to go!! Connie in KY
