  • Vegan for 10 years now (vegetarian for 4 years prior to that). I originally made the change to get my anxious stomach under control (it helped) and to lose weight (it didn't work). I recommend eating all the things you are used to eating, minus the meat and dairy. I highly recommend getting used to nutritional yeast as it…
  • I get a super sweet and salt tooth and it is overwhelming at times. I don't give in to sugar (I am fighting an addiction to that good stuff) but will just let myself have a small bag of chips or go a little overboard on salting my food. A huge thing for me used to be soda but I started drinking sparkling water and can now…
  • I wouldn't worry about including it! It's more of an umami taste, I guess. If you have garbanzo bean flour then add a bit of that instead. Otherwise just add a little bit more gluten flour and a splash of soy sauce.
  • How much does it call for? It's for flavor, so you can probably just add some dry veg broth powder instead. You can find nutritional yeast in most bulk food sections (most being key here!)
  • Soaking helps, but you can "quick soak" or boil the beans for 3 minutes and let sit for one hour before cooking. Simmer the beans for a bit (maybe 40 minutes) until tender and then add garlic and onion. You can mash them with broth to make tasty not-fried beans.
  • I agree with the bowls suggestion! You can batch cook a bunch of rice and beans/tofu/lentils and make different meals for the week. Also, check out Isa Chandra Moskowitz's Appetite for Reduction. Lots of ideas and she is a badass recipe creator, so you can't go wrong.
  • I used to drink at least a beer or a mixed drink a night (if not more). I've cut down a lot due to my mom being diagnosed as an alcoholic and I am amazed at how awful I feel when I do indulge! I've taken up sparkling water and sleepytime tea to fill the "fun drink" void. Energy drinks have never appealed to me, but I do…
  • Every one of you has upped my motivation! I feel better about going out there and just getting it done. Nina, C25K is a program that gets you to run a 5k (or for 30 minutes) in 9 weeks. The first week you alternate jogging for a minute and walking for 2 or 3 (I don't remember!) and you slowly work your way up to 30. But it…
  • Thank you all! I had wondered how to break into interval training, so this is definitely going to help. And thenebean9, I'm starting a month long Zumba class on Saturday! I really appreciate the advice!
  • Hello! I'm actually signed up for the 5K that day! It's my first 5K and I'm a little frightened and excited at the same time. My friend and I are dressing up as the talking flowers in the movie. Good luck to you!!
  • Before I took a week vacation, I was on week 6. I was struggling with my stamina, but little walking breaks help. Now I'm afraid to try again! What if I can't pull off 25 minutes anymore?
  • I suggest a virgin mojito! A little bit of sugar with mint and club soda make plain ole water extra special :-)
  • Hello! My husband isn't vegan, but he gladly eats what I make. I guess you could say he's vegan at home? Anyways, we rarely have soy based products due to an extreme budget and so far, no complaints! That being said - some daily meal (protein!) components: Seitan in ANYTHING beans (chili, bowls, stirfries) Hummus anything.…
  • I like to throw it into stir fries and pasta dishes. You could also try to look up a seitan cutlet or stroganoff recipe.
  • I've made it!! I've always made it with VWG, so I can't help you on the whole wheat front. There are certain recipes that work better for me than others. This is an excellent recipe to start out with, it's completely fool proof. http://www.postpunkkitchen.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=15959
  • This is exactly why I went vegetarian 6 years ago! I'm vegan, have been for almost 2 years and love every minute of it. I always thought I would miss cheese, but it's really not a big thing for me!
  • Beet greens!! Steam them in a little stock with garlic and a pinch of salt. YUM. Roasted squash is a favorite here. I like to roast it with onion and cherry tomatoes and toss it with pasta.
  • The tummy issues tapered off when I quit eating meat, so I thought, why ruin a good thing? Before I went vegan I tried some chicken my husband had and didn't think I was missing out! Are you trying to to prep your system for Indonesia? That really doesn't sound like fun at all! The prepping, not the trip of course.
  • I was vegetarian for about 5 years before due to stomach issues and it was sort of a natural progression. I find that I just feel better without the dairy in my system, and I'm really not a fan of eggs as it is. The beginning of my unemployment really sucked, but then I decided to go to school for something I REALLY want…
  • Hello! I get to run week 2, day 2 tomorrow! Even though it's only 90 seconds running, I'm kinda impressed by my sticking with it....
