Thank you for giving a serious and well-reasoned response. Any discussion of paleo diet (whatever that actually means,) always makes me wonder how other people see all the pieces of this nutritional system fitting together. I really appreciate you explaining your perspective. (I just want to reiterate that I was not asking…

It seems to me that many people are not defending a particular dietary style, but rather good reasoning and the scientific process.

She doesn't explicitly state that it is "B.S." for everyone in all situations, but inferring such doesn't seem like too great a stretch. http://ajcn.nutrition.org/content/78/3/660S.full http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0921800905004994 These are two examples of many scholarly works that either explicitly…

Clearly, your parents never talked to you about the dangers of science, and now it's too late. Look at you, demanding logical consistency, instead of just accepting an argument without even analyzing it. What is this world coming to when people will suggest that anecdotal evidence that actually disproves the hypothesis…

I have nothing against paleo, but I would like to ask a question I seldom hear addressed when people discuss paleo. It is my understanding that this planet is unable to support the current human population on a paleo style diet; if this is not currently the case, it will be within 20 years. Assuming that paleo is truly the…

I am really happy for you that you are happy with your health and diet. However, with a sample size of 1 it is not possible to have any sort of control condition to determine if there is even a correlation between the dietary habits and the test results, let alone to infer causality.

Ugh, I can't even read this whole thread, for fear of reliving the trauma. Yes, this has happened. The specific phrase I would get always started "You have such a pretty face! If you lost some weight <<something the speaker thought I would want but probably didn't.>>" Everything I want to say won't make it past the filter…

My girlfriend and I met at our retail job, too. (In Toledo, OH. Weird.)

This is a good starting point, but don't forget that they need lots of exercise. I recommend you get a cheetah to chase it to keep it active.

It stops me. Even when I am in a mood and I have decided I don't care, I take one look at the numbers posted on the menu at the fast food joint around the corner from my house, and keep moving. There is a difference, between "*kitten* it, I don't care today," and "What the hell, I might as well flush my whole life down the…

This is pretty much echoes what I want to say. The situation you are in is toxic. If you are self-aware enough to want to make things better, you are not like them, and you need to save yourself. You can't save your husband, and you sure as hell can't save his family. I stayed in a bad situation for far too long, with an…

I am having a hard time imagining a circumstance where this and this are simultaneously true.

Chiming in for the FitBit Ultra. It is with me always.

My first thought was that the church-lady was mentally unstable. Giving unsolicited advice like that suggests an inflated sense of self-importance that seems larger than just being an obnoxious busy-body, and extends more into the realm of "I have been granted supernatural powers of discernment and am therefore called to…

Thank you for this. I am very gratified to see some of the pervasive misogyny addressed.

Hey there OP. How about you start us off by thoroughly explaining what you mean, and what you see as at least two opposing viewpoints on the topic?

I used to love bacon, and I thought bacon loved me. Turns out bacon is a two-timing cheat who is always hanging out in sleazy meat markets. There are a million graphic pics and videos all over the internet of bacon with skinny-jeans-wearing, fake-bespectacled hipsters doing all sorts of twisted things. Take my advice: go…

I decided that they are the same age and fell in love in 6th grade and then I went to my cave to avoid thinking anything else. *Slide*

Don't forget to thoroughly wash any vegetables that you are going to eat raw.

http://www.womenshelters.org/cit/tn-nashville I don't know where you are in TN, but from the way you describe your situation (no license, no job, no finances of your own, and a partner who is, at the least, emotionally and verbally abusive,) you need help. I would recommend starting by calling the women's shelter closest…

I find that running until exhausted seems to help. Of course, not as much as crystal light and vodka.

What bothers me is the inadvertently (I hope it's inadvertent,) nasty things people will say about "fatter me". Especially since I'm still obese, just less obese. It let's me know that however polite they may have been to my face, they were in fact judging me for my weight when I was >250lbs. This makes it highly likely…

"Many studies have found that people perform relatively poorly on tests of self-control when they have engaged in a previous, seemingly unrelated act of self-control." ( http://www.apa.org/monitor/2012/01/self-control.aspx ) You are working 50-55 hour weeks, that's a lot. It's not surprising that you don't have any…

This is a great response. (It's also what I ought to do when people post judgmental threads wherein they broadly attack people for behaviors they disagree with. It's just so hard, though, when people are being busy bodies and jerks. What does it matter to you if someone has a different frame, or just uses it as an excuse…

Please don't do this. If someone shares that they are trying to lose weight, or asks what "your secret" is, by all means, share this website with them, because it's awesome. But if you suggest this, or any other weight loss technique/program/website to someone who has not shared that they want to lose weight, it can be…

If she has always been overweight, she has probably fought very hard for some sense of self-worth in the face of a society that values women almost exclusively on how well they meet beauty ideals. Perhaps the fact that you suspect that she think you're doing this to be pretty and skinny suggests that she is afraid that you…

Hahahaha! Also never been said about what landed someone a job or got someone a promotion.

Humans. They are really odd, and I sometimes find some of them attractive. It feels kinda gross to admit it, but there it is.
