Go to a good shoe store in your area. If your foot is falling asleep and you get shin splints your shoes (even if they are new) can be the problem. Mine shows higher than the gym machines, too. So far, though, using what my HRM shows has worked well for me.

HRM...it works the best for me. I always go a little low, though. If it says I burned 843, I call it 800. 902, I call it 850...just to leave room for a margin of error.

Stick to it! I wouldn't recommend logging your walking but changing your settings where it asks for your activity level. The one up from sedentary would probably be fine.
