Having posed the question, I've done a lot of reading today about this. The results of lots of research are not consistent (no surprise there), and I can see why some researchers and doctors would be worried about people taking the line that as long as you are exercising, it doesn't matter if you're overweight (it does, it…

I don't worry too much about what the MFP calculators say, they can only be an indicator, as the precise calories would be dependent on a number of things - intensity, body size and weight and level of fitness, to think of a few. What I can say is: A) I was in the pool for an hour and moving all the time and B) I've been…

Hi, I'm in London, please add me, looking forward to more UK friends.

But gaining weight is always fat? Unless you are following a specific muscle building Programme?

Having the support of friends and family or other supportive people around you helps to make things easier, Joseph. Good luck.

Thank you, Tanie, that is a lovely response.

Water, now that's a good one. My sister rates drinking lots of water as helpful for all sorts of things including helping to lose weight (given the other essentials of eating less and moving more). Thanks, ThomRhodes

Thanks, Melvin.

Hehe, I know what you mean. It's only because I'm on holiday that I even have time to think of such an idea, never mind doing it. I was curious to find out whether it was possible, in the sense of, not can I do it, but would it have the desired effect. It seems, metabolically, that even we had the time etc and attempted…

Great information, thanks.

Thank you, but you're missing the point of the conversation.

Good point, thank you.

Bwogilvie answered most of these questions, I think, but if anyone else has any comments please do contribute.

Hi, thanks, This is the kind of information I was looking for - whether increased exercise had other implications, considerations. Interesting debate.

Thank you everyone for your responses.

I'm thinking about an experiment and trying to understand how the body works. To maintain my current weight requires, say, 1,900 calories, so to lose weight at a steady, sustainable rate, consume, say, 1,400 calories each day. But the loss is not simply from fat tissue, is it? It's from muscle and fat alike? So the idea of…

Hi everyone, also in London and looking for new contacts, please feel free to add me.

Hi Carol, welcome back, feel free to add me - and anyone else looking for new friends :)

I've just joined the nearest gym to my home (about a mile walk), which is £47 per month, and no joining fee this month (usually £10). I like it because there's no contract, and if I know I'm going to be away one month, I can give notice to cancel my subscription and re-activate it when I'm around again. That's good for the…

I agree: I'm not sure what it is doing for my metabolism, but I have a great sense of well-being and energy into the evening when I eat breakfast and then have a good meal at lunchtime. It definitely improves my happiness score! I like eating with my family in the evening, too, but I have a lighter meal - maybe not so many…

Thanks for posting this, I'd been thinking about buying a gadget for checking exercise etc.

I guess have a look at the job websites and see how many jobs are around in the different areas you are interested in - or ask to have a chat with the course tutor at one of the institutions you are thinking of applying to (or all of them). You have plenty of experience - some people go straight from graduating to a PGCE.…

I've adapted some of Jamie Oliver's recipes for roasted potatoes and roots, adding one of the following to 10ml of oil, together with some herbs (fresh or dry) and lo-salt and pepper: cider or white or red wine vinegar; any citrus fruit (although not tried grapefruit). The vinegar or juice helps to make the oil go further,…
