  • Thanks ladies! Also, I know some people lose weight from morning sickness in the first trimester, so I didn't think that not gaining any weight right now is a big deal. Also, I hope to only gain about 25 pounds, so we'll see if that happens! @kellyknepperg was your doctor concerned you didn't gain any weight until 22 weeks?
  • In the US healthy food is expensive because only 1% of all government subsidies given to farmers go towards fresh produce. The vast majority just go to corn production, which is why high fructose corn syrup is in all junk here. If the government started subsidizing the cost of healthy food, it would be a lot cheaper.…
  • To deal with insulin resistance, it is better to eat 5 small meals a day to keep your blood sugar steady rather than 2-3 large meals per day. I recommend checking out the American Diabetes Association's Website. They have tons of info about insulin resistance and meal plan ideas for dealing with it. Regarding your…
  • @queenfrump! Good luck with your pregnancy and I accepted your friend request! I agree with LoveFitNation that you should call your doctor and ask for bloodwork to test progesterone levels. If they are low and you take a supplement, this can help prevent miscarriage caused by low progesterone. Are you seeing an…
  • Thanks for sharing your story lilynblue. I'm sorry about your first pregnancy. It is reassuring to know that others have had spotting and went on to have a normal pregnancy. I know my doctor plans to keep me on the progesterone at least through my 1st trimester, but I'll have to ask about the rest of my pregnancy.
  • Thanks @LoveFitNation! I had problems with my progesterone levels since stopping birth control. I was having spotting nearly everyday before I got pregnant, so my doctor recommended I go on it to help prevent a miscarriage due to low progesterone.
  • Thank you! I thought I would be happy just to know I can get pregnant, but now of course I over-analyze everything that's going on with my body.
  • Hello, I have PCOS and am usually vegetarian (really pescatarian since I eat fish once in a while). In general, I would recommend that if you do eat animal products, even vegetarian ones like eggs, cheese, etc, that you buy the organic hormone-free kind. I have noticed that my symptoms are better when I am not ingesting…
  • Congrats! My due date is November 4th!
  • Here are links to a few of my favorite tofu recipes: http://www.ebfarm.com/recipes/tangerine-tofu-broccoli-and-red-bell-peppers http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/Tofu-Triangles-in-Creamy-Nut-Buttter-Sauce-with-Scallions-355894 I agree about always using extra firm tofu!
  • I agree with Princessmoe33 about eating organic with no GMOs. I also have been a vegetarian for about 3.5 years now (though once in awhile allow myself fish, so really I'm a pescatarian). When I eat animal products like dairy and eggs, I make sure that they are the organic, hormone-free kind. I have noticed a huge…
  • I had one of those days on Monday, after getting my BFN and being told I may have a low number of eggs for my age. I let myself be upset all day, and then yesterday was a lot better. It's hard because my friends and family don't know I'm TTC, so the only person I can talk with about it is my husband. I also had 2 close…
  • Congrats! If you really want birth control, try going to Planned Parenthood. They offer a big discount based on your income.
  • You don't have to completely eliminate carbs, but it's good to choose your carbs carefully, according to the glycemic index. Eating raw fruit and muiltigrain/sprouted grain carbs is a lot healthier than white pasta and potato chips. Since you have insulin resistance, I would recommend checking out the American Diabetes…
  • First off, good luck today and I hope everything turns out ok! Definitely don't be afraid to speak up and ask lots of questions. Many doctors forget that patients who are newly diagnosed don't know much about their condition, but will be happy to take the time to teach you if you are proactive about seeking information…
  • I never had Mirena, but it is possible to have a healthy pregnancy with PCOS. Women with PCOS do have a higher risk of miscarriage due to low progesterone levels. Some women take progesterone while pregnant to help reduce this risk. I would recommend seeing a reproductive endocrinologist for help TTC instead of an OBGYN.…
  • I think it depends on what symptoms you currently experience and which ones you are trying to get rid of. I have always been within the normal weight range for my height, yet have always had irregular periods regardless of my weight. When I was younger, I went a long time without a period. Now, I have periods/spotting too…
  • My doctor told me that PCOS can affect the accuracy of ovulation tests. So it's possible to get a false positive when you are not really ovulating. Have you tried seeing a reproductive endocrinologist? I have been trying to conceive and recently started seeing a RE. They gave me Clomid to ensure that I ovulate, which they…
  • I was fortunate in that I got diagnosed with PCOS when I was only 17, so now I know a lot about this condition. But I definitely feel you regarding struggling harder than regular people to lose weight. Feel free to add me!
  • In addition to bloodwork, you also want to get a vaginal ultrasound to check for cysts. Many women with PCOS are at risk for developing diabetes. You can ask to have your HbA1c checked (3 month average of your blood sugar levels), and if it is too high, then you can start a medication like Metformin. You may also want to…
  • Feel free to add me as a friend, I have PCOS and know how hard it is to lose weight with this condition!
  • I am a member at Lakeview Athletic Club and love it. I have tried several of their classes. I find I work out harder when I have an instructor and in a class since I'm competitive. I like their yoga and pilates classes a lot. I need to try their spinning classes, I have done those in the past and they are a great workout.…
  • Whole Living has a recipe section, as well as other great sections on fitness and general healthy living. http://www.wholeliving.com/ I also love Epicurious and they have a section of healthy recipes: http://www.epicurious.com/recipesmenus/healthy/recipes
  • Type II diabetes does run in my family, though fortunately I have been able to maintain a normal BMI to lower my risk. I have also worked in a diabetes clinic and research center so I am well aware of the effects of this disease. As a result, I have spent tons of time researching nutrition and dedicating myself to a…
  • It is easy to substitute ripe bananas or apple sauce for sugar in many recipes. But fruit still has sugar. So are you looking for recipes that have no cane sugar? I actually prefer to use apple sauce and small amounts of real sugar to artificial sweeteners, which I avoid at all costs. I don't feel that ingesting chemicals…
  • There is no reason it should take months to get the results of blood work. Even if they send it to an outside lab they should have it within a week. However, doctors offices are extremely busy and you cannot rely on your doctor's nurse or PA to automatically call you with the results. You need to be proactive and call them…
  • Welcome, I will add you as a friend as I'm new here too and looking for people with PCOS to help keep me motivated. I was diagnosed at age 17 and am now 29, so I know a lot about PCOS. Feel free to ask any questions!
  • Since most women with PCOS have insulin resistance and are at greater risk for developing Type II DM, keeping insulin levels steady is important. Check out the American Diabetes Assocation website: http://www.diabetes.org/food-and-fitness/ They have basic guidelines and food plans to help teach you portion control. They…
  • I actually try to do it every morning when I get up, but some days I forget.
  • Do you work out in the morning or evening? I have heard that working out in the evening can make it harder for you to go to sleep/stay asleep due to the endorphins, which can make you tired the next day. Usually when I am working out regularly I find I am less tired because it gives me more energy and I sleep more soundly…
