  • Hello everyone. I've been absent for a while. I was in the hospital for 10 days. Nothing major, just had to be there. Before I went I got my knee injected and it has already failed. And while I was in the hospital, my right arm decided to dislocate. I wasn't doing anything other than writing in my journal and it just…
  • Pip- I just love your dog! I have cats at home but now and again I just need a dog fix. Yours looks so friendly and cuddly. I can tell he's very bonded with you. Well, tomorrow is the big day with the orthopedist. I am going to direct a conversation before they just deside to strap me down and shoot me full of steroids.…
  • I don't know if my doctor is being mean or not. I rarely get to talk directly to him. I get to talk to his minions, his underlings, the staff. They tell me of his decisions. My doctor is the department head of Orthopedics at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Mn. He has a team of doctors working under him. He is the guy that…
  • Hi, sorry I haven't been keeping up. I've been doing research on knee replacement surgery. I'm getting really nervous about my upcoming appointment with my orthopedist on Monday. I've been on crutches for 8 months and I have to try to talk him into doing surgery on me. He had me down for surgery and then changed his mind…
  • Jumping for joy! I've lost 12 lbs so far (since February 10th )!!! It just keeps getting better. I want to thank all of you for your support. We are better together.
  • Happy Monday Ladies. And a warm one it is. It's supposed to be in the 60's all week here which is welcomed by everyone even though we know that we are not out of the snow zone yet. Enjoy it while we can. Be outside as much as we can. Soak up that Vitamin D and Smile! Today I'm driving 3 hours south to Iowa City. I'm…
  • I'm with you on that name learning thing. This is such a vibrant active group that it is hard not to be inspired by all of you. Or, it's hard not to catch the enthusiasm that you gals bring to the table. We all have our own goals and trials in life, but it seems that this is the place to bring it and feel better about…
  • Just stopping through. It's my 25th day anniversary on MFP! And it feels so good. Today I'm going to a film festival where they are showing a film that was made about my mother's work in bringing 100 students from apartheid era South Africa, an area that later became Namibia, and brought them here to the Lutheran colleges…
  • I know that bridge and those bluffs. Now think bigger and without the smell. And if you ever get a chance, Decorah, which is the little town in Iowa where I live, is famous for our Eagle cam. We have had a mated pair of eagles on a web cam for years now. This year they have three eggs. I think they are numbers 24, 25, and…
  • Ok ladies, I have to tell someone because I'm absolutely bursting. I started working with a nutritionist on Feb 10th. Before that I had pretty much given up and resigned to being 290 for the rest of my life. As of today, I was at the doctor's office, and of course they weigh you, since starting I've lost 7.1 pounds for a…
  • I lived in St. Paul in the Victoria crossing area for many years and visited relatives I Duluth very often. We went and explored the state when I was young because my father was just that kind of guy. He always delighted in finding someplace new. So yes, I have heard of many of those places and have been in a few too.
  • Mary from Minnesota (I wonder where, I used to live in Minnesota), I envy your exercise level. I would love to be that active. I used to be that active. Now I'm waiting to have knee replacement surgery on April 29th at Mayo Clinic in Rochester. I'm planning on May being my rehab month and then being ready for all the…
  • Wow. You don't come across many people who know others who have come across those with EDS. It's kind of rare. I hope your friend and her sisters are doing well. It's an uphill battle. I actually got approved for knee replacement surgery just the other day! It's a big deal. Once I have the new knee. I'm going to be able to…
  • So many of you to get to know. I am jealous of you who are having spring and are out in your gardens today. It was 9 degrees here when I woke up this morning in the beautiful bluff country of the Mississippi river in Iowa. The weather really determines what you are going to do day by day for exercise this time of year.…
  • Hi everyone. I'm new to the group. My name is Anna and I'm 52 yr old and boy do I have a lot to lose. But I'm having a little difficulty lately as I have been physically limited. I injured my left knee last July and have been on crutches ever since. But the good news is that I went to Mayo Clinic and we have set a date for…
  • I too would love to be a part of this group. I'm 52 and looking at knee replacement surgery in April, so my exercise opportunities are slim... unless you want to count the 17 stairs up to my apartment, and I do. I've been logging my food faithfully every day and lost 3 pounds the first week! I'm investigating seated chair…
  • Taking an antidepressant has its good points, we start to feel better about ourselves. But they also have their bad points because one of the side effects of so many is weight gain and that can bring us down again. There are a few that are considered weight neutral. Talk to your doctor. If a side effect is having a…
  • It's either hunts or heine I can't remember which but it is clearly marked on the label.
  • I've had both cortisone and synvisc with little success. But I know what you mean about not letting the orthopedic surgeons push you around. My word, but some of them think that they are god. I go to Physical Therapy tomorrow and I'm going to lay it on the line. I'm not doing the knee exercises. They aggravate what is…
  • My PT was off today because she was sick so I had a sub PT. He wasn't going to change anything without my normal PT's blessing. I told him that the exercises make my knee hurt. In fact, I can do the exercises, but about ten minutes later, it hurts so much I'm in tears. So there isn't a lot of motivation to do this twice a…
  • I've been going to physical therapy for my left knee and they have assigned me some exercises. My problem is that the exercises irritate the knee and cause pain. Ten minutes after the exercises I'm crying from pain. I'm going to have to have a talk with them because they want me to do these twice a day and it's all I can…
  • I have an injured knee as well. I have just found a you tube video series from Launch Pad that is a seated chair exercise for obese or limeade mobility. Yeah, I hate the "O" word too but that's the way it's listed. I tried it out one day and if you put a little effort into it you can work up a sweat. Give it a try.
  • When the one exercise started to irritate my knee I stopped doing it. And I told my PT about it when I went back. I now have a substitute exercise that I dislike equally as well. It doesn't hurt as much though. I just have to force myself to do them.
  • One of the things that I've been doing even before I started going to a nutritionist is to cut out all items with High Fructose Corn Syrup. It's everywhere. It's in Katsup, jelly, hot dogs, bread, crackers, cookies, breakfast cereal, and the list goes on. There is one brand of katsup that doesn't have it, I've found a…
  • I just bought and installed a PUR water filtration system for my kitchen sink. After Flint happened and I heard a piece on NPR about another small town in New Hampshire that is having water problems, and our congressman is pushing to repeal the clean water act, it was all too much for me. I installed the system. It was…
  • Remember the 80's when it was all the rage to wear shoulder pads in your jackets or blouses? I actually had to take mine out because they looked ridiculous my shoulders are so broad. And that was back before I gained weight and I was looking very good. I still had to buy clothing in larger sizes, 14 - 18 US, because my…
  • Sounds like something that I should check out. I've never heard of Earth Spirit before. I've always been a dyed in the wool Birkenstock or Hafflinger's gal. It's all about the slip on shoe for me. I can't have shoes that rub up against my ankles because of scar tissue from a surgery to rebuild my right ankle. It just…
  • That is so encouraging to hear. I worry sometimes that I'm not moving enough. And it just puts more stress on me. I go to get my MRI of my knee today and also go to my first physical therapy appointment today too. We'll see what they have to tell me.
  • I'll have to do that. Or, if you come down Decorah way look me up. Add me as a friend and then you can keep track of me.
  • I'm from Decorah, Iowa in the States. It's a very small town. I actually lived in Cambridge when I was 7 for a year. I have lovely memories of going to school there. I haven't been doing much walking. I injured my knee last July and have been on crutches ever since. I am starting physical therapy tomorrow mainly for my…
