Hey! Not true! I came from a lab where we openly argued about whether any given study was "good research." Part of my mentor's mission was to teach us to critically evaluate and criticize established research!

Right on! I've countless laughs reading these forums - and reading NDJ1979's seemingly endless repetitive responses over and over!

MOST DEFINITELY! It's one of my favorite past times! Now where is that pesky aorta...

AS A SCIENTIST.... I'm going to have to agree with the masses that this all sounds like correlation and not causation. BUT I'm actually going to speak to her credentials. She's a sports nutritionist. SPORTS. Not a nutritionist who specializes in weight loss. She does seem to know her stuff when it comes to sports. But…

Wow!! You are so inspiring! I hope to live like you do. :)

Look at your weekly averages and make sure you are getting 1-1.5g of protein per lb of lean body mass/day. It's ok if you're fluctuating daily (some days a little low, some a little high), so long as on average you're approximately hitting your 40/30/30 with a minimum of 1g protein/ lb of lbm.

i've made oatmeal with protein powder! cook the oatmeal normally then add 1 scoop of vanilla protein powder and some extra milk. it makes the oatmeal a little soupy but it's delicious!

I was a really good kid and would never even contemplate doing anything bad. My parents were ultra conservative, ultra strict, and ultra untrusting. I never did anything bad to make them not trust me and they never really gave me their trust. I knew that my mom would regularly snoop through my room when I was in school. I…

Yeap. Do it. I have a bodymedia fit (different, but similar data is gathered). It's been really helpful. I'm actually super sedentary (no, really) because I work from home 3-4 days a week. It helped me realize that estimates of my activity were too low and I needed to move more to actually achieve the deficits I *thought*…

right?! i've gotta get off the forums...

As a researcher (wrapping up my PhD now), my two cents is that whatever you do - start calculating effect sizes. Ask your adviser to teach you how. In fact, your project could be to just calculate the effect sizes of influential weight loss studies. Statistical significance is important to have but it doesn't mean that…

I always have a 1 or 2 pairs of pants a few sizes smaller than what I'm wearing. I tend to buy a pair whenever I see them on a super discount - Clearance Express jeans 80% off in a size smaller than what I can wear? Yes, please! I don't end up switching to the smaller jeans until it fits perfectly, absolutely no snugness.…

^^Yup. This. Stronglifts 5x5 is awesome. Also, you can't gain muscle in a caloric deficit. Strength training in a deficit will aid in fat loss. (For the picky: blah blah newbie gains in a deficit - so minimal but people think it's so huge)

Amazing! Love this thread!

^^^This. I'm also going to interject that BMI is probably a reasonable indicator for the average person. Not the person who's at a very low BF% with a ton of muscle, the body builder, or the professional athlete - but it's likely to be a decent indicator of health for the "average joe/josephina" who is either sedentary or…

^^^^^^Seriously?!? How did you all miss this?? LOL

Yup. This. His like dissatisfaction runs much deeper than any issues he might have with you. Had a bf like that too - tried to blame me for things he didn't like about his past and his life. You soooooo did the right thing and you'll feel better too! And this totally isn't a rant. This sounds like an NSV!

Wash your current jeans and throw them in the dryer to shrink them up a bit. They're mostly likely stretched out from use. Buy a belt till the new ones fit. Great job on your losses!! :)

Awesome post Trog! You are your own gif! My new hero!!!

I think this phrase comes from the idea that people need to do a million crunches/ab exercises to get visible abs. BUT visible abs come from a low body fat percentage. Low body fat percentages are most easily achieved through a proper "cut" (i.e. diet to lose body fat and not muscle through a *moderate calorie deficit*,…

When I was young, I was super skinny and people make comments that I was anorexic. I ate like a horse - I was just super active. Needless to say I started to eat a lot so I could gain some weight and look healthier. Well it worked! When I was 23, I was much heavier (probably 160lbs at 5'4). I started a new job and our…

^^^^This!! I'm a big fan of Express & American Eagle!

Fake it. :) I'd say something like - "Oh! Thank you so much! I already ate breakfast and I'm stuffed. I couldn't possibly - let's see if there's someone around who'd like this treat." It's not rude, you're not wasting food or his money, and you were totally gracious about it. You can do this with lunches too. "Oh I'd love…

Brilliant! Great job on your losses sofar! :)

Sara's the expert! Listen to her! I'm out! :)

Thanks Sara! Did you take a look at her diary?
-
Well this is concerning. Why are you trying to lose another 15 lbs when you already weigh 121 - a perfectly appropriate weight for someone your height and age?
-
Hm. Well really it's a patience issue. Give it 3-4 weeks and see if you've lost weight. Sometimes bodies need time to reflect on the scale. It's unlikely you're gaining muscle since it's very difficult to gain muscle while on a deficit (and usually involves lifting heavy weights). Are you weighing your foods? Are you…

I lift heavy and don't do crossfit. I just started stronglifts 5x5 about a month ago. feel free to add me! :)
