  • I ran both the 2013 Walt Disney World Half Marathon and the 2013 Disneyland Half Marathon. I had a blast at both. I don't think you can beat the thrill of running thru the parks. The races are expensive and they do sell in days. They are now offering challenges which are multi-race events so if you run a combination of…
  • I think ultimately you should do whatever you feel more comfortable doing. If you stick with your normal routine you will be fine. If you decide to rest and not swim you will be fine. It's more mental than anything else. Over Labor Day my wife and I ran the Disneyland Dumbo Double Dare challenge. That's a 10k on Saturday…
  • I would recommend the Galloway Easy 5k app in the iTunes Store. The Galloway program differs from some of the other couch 2 5k programs because it uses a run/walk/run interval system throughout. Most other c25k programs set the goal to run a 5k non stop. The Galloway system is based around alternating between running and…
  • I started running back on 4/30/12. I used the Galloway Easy 5K app to get started. At the time I was 306 lbs and morbidly obese. When I started I would struggle to do a 18 minute mile and I would run laps around our local fire department so in case I had a medical emergency I could yell or crawl for help. Thankfully I…
  • On 4/30/12 5 months before my 40th birthday I decided I needed to lose weight and get in shape. I was 306lbs and morbidly obese with high blood pressure, sleep apnea, and most likely diabetic. I had been avoiding going to the doctor for many years so I knew my 40th physical wouldn't be pretty. My goal was to lose 40 pounds…
  • Started at 306 lbs but the left picture is me at 287 on 5/14/2012 and the right is from yesterday at 202 lbs.
  • I wanted to post a late summer update to the thread. Over Labor Day I ran the Inaugural Dumbo Double Dare Challenge at Disneyland. The Challenge consisted of a 10k on Saturday followed by a half marathon on Sunday. This was my second half ever and even though I trained for the back to back running I wasn't sure how I would…
  • I use compression calf sleeves and love them. I just ran the Disneyland half last weekend with them and my legs felt so much better than the Disney World half that I ran in January without sleeves. To me they make a huge difference in post run fatigue.
  • I would suggest the Galloway Easy 5k app. It's a run-walk-run program that is designed to get you to finish a 5k in 8 weeks. You run for a short interval :30 and then you walk for a short interval :45 and then repeat this process for the duration of the period. After you finish the 5k move to his 10k app, after that move…
  • I am a big fan of the Galloway run-walk-run half marathon program. His program breaks up the run between short intervals of walking and running. By alternating walking and running you lower the chance of injuring yourself and many of those who use this technique actually run faster times than if they run the entire…
  • I suggest walking for 20 minutes a day for the first week. Increase to 30 minutes in the second week. Third week I would start the Galloway Easy 5K app. The app uses a run-walk-run technique where you alternate running and walking for short intervals. The program has 3 exercise days a week with two short runs and one long…
  • I am a huge fan of the Galloway run-walk-run technique. I used his Easy 5K app when I started running and back on 4/30/12. I was morbidly obese at over 300lbs with high blood pressure and sleep apnea. I used a :30 run, :45 walk ratio for my 3 runs each week. When I started I was doing 16 minute miles. When I finished his 8…
  • Looking good, congratulations!
  • I am a big fan of the Galloway Run/Walk/Run technique. You alternate running and walking for short intervals. You can get an app for your smart phone where it walks you thru couch to your first 5k. It's an 8 week program that works great. I started with it back on 4/30/12 and weighed 306lbs. When I finished I moved onto…
  • My blood pressure was 180/110 when I was 300+ pounds. I never went on BP medicine but that was by my choice and not the doctors. In a little over 8 months of diet and exercise it dropped to 110/68 after I lost 115 pounds.
  • Thanks, it's true it's been awesome seeing our whole family get healthier. Our whole family ran the Color Run a few months ago and had a blast.
  • Thanks for the kind words. For so many years I just bought into the hype that it's impossible to lose weight. I thought why even try I am going to fail. In reality all it takes are making the right choices each day. Good luck and let me know if you need any tips or advice.
  • Thanks, I am very proud of going from morbidly obese to a 22:04 5k in less than 14 months. I never thought I would be my fastest in my life at over 40.
  • After finishing my first half marathon in January I was burned out on running and so I focused on spin classes. I did at least one and sometimes two classes a day for a few months. When it was time my first official 5k in May I was able to drop my PR from 25 to 22 minutes. So I would recommend working on improving your…
  • I am huge fan of the Galloway run/walk/run technique. You essentially alternate between running and walking for short intervals. Alternating between walking for :30 and then running for :30 allows me to do 8:30 miles and keeps my HR at around 160 for the running portions and 140 for the walking. My legs stay fresh and most…
  • I started running on 4/30/12. I weighed in at 306 lbs and was in terrible shape, morbidly obese to be exact. I decided to start running using the Galloway Easy 5k app. Since I was convinced there was a good chance of dying on my run I would ran laps around my local fire dept. That way if anything went wrong I could crawl…
  • Thanks, that's very funny you started on the same day last year. Reminiscing those tough first weeks have been fun. Last Fourth of July was the day I posted the first picture on Facebook where friends were blown away by my weight loss. Good luck with the 10k training. Having done several 5ks you should have no problem…
  • Congratulations! How awesome is it to fit in airplane and roller coaster seats. I went to Universal studios and rode the Harry Potter ride at 300+ pounds and I had to use a special fat seat. In January I went back down 115lbs and rode it again in a normal seat and felt like a million dollars.

  • Thanks for the kind words. I know it's a cliche but the hardest part of the workout for me is getting the strength to get out the door. I think I am a little crazy though because the bad weather days are my favorite. I actually prefer it when I don't see any other runners out. It gives me a little more energy knowing that…
  • This is awesome! My wife and I are doing the DDD also. She is dressing as Wonder Woman and she talked me into being Superman. :blushing: My mantra when working out is I need to have Superman arms. I am still pretty far away though. We are also doing the Three Little Pigs Challenge during the race. You eat 3 pieces of bacon…
  • Thanks, I do feel awesome. One of my fitness instructors asked me if I ever feel terrible from exercising a week or two weeks in a row without taking a day off and I laughed because exercising every day makes me feel alive. At 300lbs and with all the health issues I felt like death. Even at my most tired I feel 100% better…
  • In a core group fitness class on Monday the instructor told us that it's much more difficult to make your abs sore than other parts of your body. You can still make your abs sore though.
  • Awesome job! You and I have an almost identical weight loss journey although my moobs were bigger when I was over 300 pounds. Keep up the good work.
  • I started with the Galloway Easy 5k app from lolo for my iphone and then when I finished it I moved up to the 10k app and then the half app. Galloway does a run/walk/run method and you can import songs from your itunes library into the app. I started at 306lbs and in terrible shape doing 16 minute miles. A year later I am…
