Simple math, eat more than you burn and you won't lose! I have gained while running 50+ miles per week. How? By eating 60 miles worth of food...

Couldn't have said it better than Carson!

My $.02: bad idea. Get trained up properly and do it next year.

Indeed 50K is a basically a marathon on steroids (assuming courses are comparable). My only 50K was a flat road race. I too used a marathon as my long run about 2-3 weeks out. I need to run another one someday, most of them are trail around here and that's not really my thing.

My $.02 - that Hansen stuff is really geared toward high mileage fast people. I think lots of runners are attracted to it when they see shorter long runs. Indeed long runs are only one component of training, but I find them very important. I'm not a fan other FIRST type program (three days of running only, but all them…

This! Lots of new runners simply lack the aerobic fitness to do anything other than run/walk when they start off. If you're already able to run without stopping/walk breaks, then you're way ahead of the curve.

My whole life is one big carb load anyway, so I'm always ready to race!
-
My $.02 (after 46 halfs & 26 marathons): No real need to carbo load for a half. You generally aren't out there long enough to deplete your glycogen stores (that's mile 20 kind fo stuff). That said, I always make sure to avoid that which might give me upset on race morning. No giant salads or bran muffins the day before.…

Another vote for Higdon! Be sure to get off the dreadmill and get outside to start pounding the pavement as soon as possible.
-
Dreadmill on a high incline will help. You can also crank up the incline on the elliptical.
-
This should get you pretty close. If you're running on a dreadmill, the distance may be off if it hasn't been calibrated. http://www.runnersworld.com/tools/calories-burned-calculator

FWIW - I find the burns for running on MFP to be right in line with what I get on my Garmin and the RunnersWorld calculator. You just need to use an accurate weight and pace. The real question is how far did you go? 11.5 minute pace x 3.5 miles = ~ 40 minutes. Any way to measure your distance?

Ouch! Don't try this at home kids...

Multi level parking garages work nicely as hills. Just go early and watch out for cars! Stay sage and leave your headphones at home. Bridges and freeway overpasses will do the trick as well.

Back in 2005, I was running the the LA marathon (my 2nd ever marathon). Before the race in the hotel lobby I was chatting with some other runners, and asked how their training went leading up to the race. They laughed and explained that their only training was walking into the expo the day before and signing up for the…

More miles, more miles, more miles!

Thinking some new runners could benefit from this classic plan...

I read your post as Fitbit Foreskin Irritation!
-
Great job! Way to stay disciplined and execute your race plan!

Getting trained up for my 27th marathon (still trying to figure out whether I like them or not). Running is awesome!

Distance running and calorie burns is just math. Eat more than you burn and you'll gain. You can't use your running as a license to eat. I've gained while running 50+ miles per week. It's easy, all you have to do is eat 60 miles worth of food...

I vote for starvation mode! Eat more calories

We have no time for your voice of reason stuff here...

I'll take bad ideas for $400 Alex... Take your time to learn to like running. No need to be in a hurry to run a half.
-
I ran my first marathon after running consistently for 2 + years. During that time time I ran 7 or 8 halfs (and shorter stuff too). My $.02 - people are in too big a hurry to run a marathon while totally undertrained. It works much better if you take the time to do it right.
-
My physical therapist had me running in two pairs of the same shoes, switching off each time I run.

You running LA? Great choice for a first timer! It will be my 7th time running LA, so hit me up if you need any info.

My running club costs $25 a year for membership (and that includes a tech shirt). No real downside, they met for two runs a week. They ramp up big for our local marathon & half marathon every summer (mid October race). We get 100+ people out for some those runs. Lots of nice people, but I don't run with them all that often…

Late to the party, but here are my top three marathon tips (free of charge - as always): 1) Don't go out too fast 2) Don't go out too fast 3) Don't go out too fast As others as said, of course you feel great at mile 3, 8 and 14. But you need to "make an investment in your future" so you can still feel good at mile 23…

The new years resolution runners are going to need some good advice...
