  • Thanks, that's really interesting!
  • It's been a while since I've done proper lifting (illness and hamstring injury). But I gain a fair amount of weight when I start lifting - like others have said, I think it's because your muscles hold more water. Looking at your diary, you're logging the real weights of things (I note the slightly different weights of the…
  • Could you make the porridge with milk instead? and maybe put some honey on top of the porridge and the weetabix - that would add calories without adding fullness. Fruit juice is very calorie dense but natural and adds extra vitamins to your day - could you drink that throughout the day? Flapjacks can be made with all…
  • For me having a stronger core helps prevent back pain so I'm always trying to make mine stronger with a variety of ab and back exercises. However, even if the goal is purely to look good, I'd want to condition those muscles in readiness for when they are revealed by my fat disappearing.
  • I normally use this site if I'm looking for a way to increase a particular nutrient: whfoods.com/genpage.php?tname=nutrient&dbid=90 It looks like leafy greens are your friend.
  • In the mirror I really don't see much of a difference. I see it when I compare photos side by side but in the mirror I'm me-shaped. My perception of the people around me has changed though. Everyone around me seems fatter (even though they've not gained). 6lb in 3 weeks is amazing weight loss - especially when you've such…
  • Cook in bulk so the same amount of messing about serves you for several meals. I often cook 3-4 days' worth of something. That way you just put everything in the recipe builder once and the other 2-3 days it's just like picking a ready-cooked meal from the MFP list. You can switch around the accompaniments so it feels like…
  • I had a very similar conversation with a friend after a colleague asked "When will you stop losing weight? You're so skinny already!" I asked my friend why that's ok but if I said "When will you stop gaining weight? You're so fat already!" I'd be in front of a disciplinary hearing.
  • higher scores in scrabble :) favourite because I like to win at scrabble and countdown and other such word games. (And I'm British)
  • He's right. Weighing it before it goes in tells you how many calories of each ingredient goes in. While you're cooking it some of the water evaporates, making your finished dish lighter than the sum of its ingredients. If I'm making a pot of something for my husband and I, I simply decide "That looks like 4 days worth,…
  • I use this myfitnesspal.com/recipe/box and then click add recipe manually if the recipe is from my head or from a book. Just double-check that it picks the right ingredients (Wednesday it thought I'd added 185g runner bean casserole to my meal rather than runner beans), decide how many servings your meal will make and…
  • I recommend home cooking with lots of vegetables. I made a chilli last night with 3 onions (391g), 1 head of celery (431g), 4 carrots (370g), 3 cloves garlic (18g), 500g lean ground beef, a handful of green chillies (20g), 16g ground cumin, 800g tinned tomatoes, pack of runner beans (185g), 7g ground coriander, 3 bell…
  • Before you invest in new shoes, can I recommend you try a different pair of socks? I have long toes and I find that if there is a seam in the toes it can really hurt my feet especially if the seam wedges underneath the toe nail. Luckily after getting running socks with no seams by the toes I don't have the same trouble.…
  • I've lost 43lb so far whist regularly indulging in treats (I believe my diary is open to all - take a peek if you want). I normally feel like I have more energy if I'm eating mostly nutrient dense whole foods and that's what I try for but sometimes (fairly frequently in my case) you've just got to have pizza or crisps or…
  • If you look in cardio there is an activity 'strength training' which will give you a small boost to your daily calories. Most of the weight-loss benefits of strength training are longer term in that you retain more muscle which uses more calories than the same weight of fat to maintain. I think the strength part of the…
  • My thoughts on the intellectual rights are as follows: M27 has clearly stated (and linked to) the source of the information and makes no attempt to pass this off as their own. The source website has a section 'Share the knowledge!' asking people to share via facebook, twitter, google+, pinterest, reddit and email. From…
  • There are a few things I dislike: 1. My belly is now noticeably bigger after a meal (the fat used to hide that I guess). 2. I'm always cold. 3. My bonier knees are uncomfortable when I lay down at night - need to change from foetal position. None of them are a big enough reason to stop though!
  • Thanks, this answers a lot of questions I had (and more I hadn't thought to ask). I'm still shifting the excess fat but I'm enjoying the unveiling of the muscles that have been hiding - I think this thread will be most useful.
  • That sounds amazing! - thanks for the idea!

  • You can use it in any dish you'd normally put spinach in. I have served it steamed as a side to a main meal, shredded it and stirred it into fried rice and used it in curries. I recommend using it soon after buying as it turns bitter if you store it too long.

  • In my mind jogging = running. The motion is the same, it's only a difference in speed and there's no pre-determined speed where you suddenly qualify as a runner. You just ran a mile. That's an excellent achievement - well done! As for the concerns mentioned about injury, keep your steps relatively short, try to land…
  • Technically you could, but my highest "calories burned" in the last 90 days is 1758 and that day involved over 2.5 hours of walking, an hour of running and 55 minutes at the gym. You'd really have to go some to reach 2,000 calories burned! When I eat out, if I'm trying to hit my calorie goal that day, I try to pick…
  • it looks like you can get them from amazon http://www.amazon.com/Nana-Flakes-Natural-Banana-Powder/dp/B00HJUHR28 but I'd be more tempted to do what audinaries suggested and just by any dried banana and whizz it up in a food processor or coffee grinder...
  • As a child, that was normally one of my first meals after having been ill - banana and honey sandwiches are fantastic!
  • no problem at all - we were all new once! :)

  • I'd just go for a 1/2 lb a week loss. It doesn't have to be 2lb a week or nothing. 1/2 lb a week would have you reach your goal before the end of May. If you're exercising or doing sport then MFP's methods state you should eat those calories back (most people eat 1/2 to 2/3rd of the calories back as MFP's estimates tend to…
  • I've just been looking online and have found this http://sportsmedicine.about.com/od/abdominalcorestrength1/ss/Quick-Core-Workout.htm#step-heading All of the exercises are ones that regularly appear in my workouts in some form or another along with push-ups, squats, Russian twists and lunges. (I normally warm up with a…
  • I had a really weak back and have been seeing a chiropractor for a number of years (I know it's not for everyone but it gives you a bit of background). My suggestion would be to learn the difference between ache and pain. Don't give up because your back is aching but ease off if there is any pain. roanokejoe is right, you…
