  • This is one of my faaaavorites to make! Mexican quinoa in one pan. Saute jalapeno and garlic for a minute then add (all at the same time): 1 cup of quinoa, 1 cup of stock, 1 can of corn, 1 can of black beans, and 1 can of fire roasted tomatoes. Season with some cumin and cayenne. Simmer until quinoa is cooked through and…
  • Baby carrots! About 10 of them is 35 calories or so. Or when I'm jonesing for salty, a low-fat string cheese (store brand) and the suggested serving of some turkey pepperoni (about 17 slices) for a total of 150 calories.
  • Ditto what they said - if you start a group, I'm in! Let's keep each other motivated!
  • Same here! Got on the scale for the first time in a while this morning and it scared me. I lost 70lb with MFP a couple years ago...and I've gained most of it back. (Then I logged my meals from yesterday and it was no surprise how that happened.) At any rate, it's time to get back on track. I'm in a few weddings over the…
  • I lost about 70 pounds a couple years ago. People started noticing when I hit the -40 mark. I gained all but about 30 of it back (wahhhh!) over two years, and I've been hitting it hard recently. After a month of religious logging, measuring, weighing, and exercising, I've dropped 11. My brain thinks it can see a difference…
  • Yes! Walking's a good start for sure. I mostly run, but on days when I'm just too dang tired, I tell myself I'll "just walk on incline." Wouldn't you know, I'm always sorer after those days haha (But yes, I second the squats comment, too.)
  • Work out in the morning, and then just take the opposite of Louie's approach and stop when I'm full...?
  • Same here. Kinda fell off the wagon around Halloween and then took a vacation in FL the weekend after. Disney World = family pictures, and it was a small wake-up call. Back to raw veggies, lean meat, and lots of gym time...
  • Ditto to most of the above. Build it in - don't necessarily skip a meal but eat a little lighter and put in extra cardio time. That's what I do, and while I'm drinking a bit less than I used to, I still indulge once or twice a week. And let's be honest: who can only have one glass? :)
  • I like to hit the gym after work. I'll have 2-3 hard boiled egg whites about an hour before I leave the office. Satiates the hunger that's starting to build up toward the end of the day, and it's an easy source of protein.
  • Water. Water, water, water. I used to mindlessly graze because I was bored, and not even very hungry, so my #1 suggestion would be any time you think you're hungry and might find yourself wanting a brownie or chips, down a glass of water first. That helps curb appetite. Otherwise, my two go-to snacks are baby carrots and…
  • Hey, I'm Katie. Like I said on the original post on the boards, I'm actually a single gal, but I'm IN two weddings next year (April in New Orleans, November in Virginia). About two years ago, I was down 72 pounds from my original weight, but went through a breakup, kinda stopped caring, and found a little more than half of…
  • I work about a block from here and can totally back that up, lot of good Korean BBQ. Although, I'm a REALLY big fan of Pho 32 (W. 32nd, just off 5th Ave) if Vietnamese is your thing. For sushi, Yasuda is out of this world but a little on the pricier side. I usually order my delivery from Abeca (E. 27th St, off Park South)…
  • I'm sending a request now. Same boat - was about halfway to my goal (-72) but gained a LOT of it back in the past year, so I've got a similar goal.
  • Single gal here, but I'm IN two weddings next year - including one in which there are 6 groomsmen and then JUST me on my bestie's side of the aisle. No intention of showing up the bride of course, but since there won't be other bridesmaids up there with me, I really want to look good.
  • Yup, that's exactly what people mean. I remember hearing that free weights are usually better for muscle building than machines, but I'm generally the same way (free weights for arms, but mostly stick to machines and laugh at the thought of a bench press). At the end of the day, it's about what works for you: if you're…
  • First of all - way to go! Congratulations on your first 5K. 34.14's nothing to shake a stick at, so having a goal to beat that is a good way to approach it. (Those winners in the 70+ category are likely lifelong runners who literally have decades of experience on you. Don't pay that any mind.) I've never been much of a…
  • It's OK to eat bad food once in a while, as long as it's in moderation. When you go out to eat, take a look at the menu and see if there are some other lighter options (e.g. instead of having 2-3 slices of pizza, maybe have 1 slice and a side salad). Or you can always grab a banana or something before you go out so that…
  • Good for you! Great attitude to have about it, knowing what worked before and setting your sights on achieving it. You are not alone! I went from 283 to 208 last year over the course of 10 months and gained back WAY too much (but not all) of it. About a week ago, I started counting each calorie and I'm actually marking out…
  • Broken record, everyone here will say there's no fast way to do it. (If there was, everyone would do it.) THAT SAID -- if you haven't been active or really cautious about your daily consumption, start moving and start counting calories, and the pounds will start falling off pretty quickly. Honestly! Just stick with it. If…
  • I can't stress enough how much I love Zumba. It is not an exaggeration to say that it changed my life. I've always hated running (and exercise, in general) but my friend wouldn't shut up about Zumba classes. I went to one when I started trying to kickstart my weight loss, and I got hooked. When I'm on a treadmill, I find…
  • I'm TOTALLY in the same boat right now! You start getting compliments from everyone noticing your progress and how great you look and then think, "Well it's OK for me to eat a little junk, because I've already come so far - it can't hurt that much." Yes. It can. I went a little off track recently and fell into my old…
  • I was acutely aware of how badly I needed to lose weight, but my "OK, that's enough" moment was when my gyno took me off the birth control I'd been on for years because it wasn't effective in women of my size, and my blood pressure was so high that continuing to take it might cause me a heart attack. I hit the gym and…
  • I'm in! Joining a little late so you folks have a head start, but darn if I won't try to catch up! I had hit a plateau and have been lacking motivation for the last month or so -- I was down to maybe 1-2 workouts a week when in the winter I had been going every day, and some old, bad eating habits came back -- so I'm…
  • Count me in!! Definitely dropped a few pounds since the holidays but have stalled due to a few work trips (and moving). Would love the challenge! Do we need to join a group somewhere, how do we get updates? Thanks for the motivation!! :)
  • PREACH! I've struggled with my weight my whole life, and MFP/logging is the only thing that has genuinely worked. It's easy to drop a quick few pounds in a couple days with a fast or cleanse, but unless you are aware of what you're putting in your body and you make exercise part of your daily routine, those pounds will…
  • Same to all of the above. Much as I try to avoid weighing myself around that time, I turn into a weepy mess when I see that in spite of my hard work, I've put on 2-4lb. But then the following week, when I drop that water weight plus a few EXTRA pounds from hard work, I'm on top of the world. It's hard not to get caught up…
  • I was always a late night snacker - journaling helped me realize exactly how bad about it I was. When I first started on my get-healthy journey (better to think of it that way than losing weight - that's just a happy side effect!), I started working out at night instead of in the morning. My bed's pretty comfy, and getting…
  • You don't necessarily have to say no. It's a question of "well, if I DO have this, what will the consequences be?" Either go over your daily calorie count (no bueno!), modify the rest of your meals that day (maybe skip the pasta with dinner), or be sure to stay at the gym a little longer. For me, what I'm doing is not a…
