  • If you do skip the water source above, you can go about 20 minutes past the camp to reach this site. Sometimes I walk here to cook supper if I get into camp too early.
  • Hey kids. Today is my fast day, so since I logged on to log my little bit of breakfast, I figured I would give all of you guys in the Great White North a look at spring. This was Easter weekend at Torreya State Park. This is the last water source before you get to the Torreya Challenge Trail campsites. So if you forget,…
  • I weighed every bite I took for several years. It does take time. but when I stopped, I started gaining. I still weigh my breakfast, and have started a modified 5-2 to get back closer to my beloved 173. Got up to 210. Back down to 199.
  • I've been gone so long I forgot how to load pictures. lol Darn Tough on the Florida Trail
  • This is from a section of the Florida Trail close to the house. The Ranchero is about a mile away on the other side of the river. This was last month.
  • I got some good trail pictures today. Haven't loaded them yet. Had to go cover up my subterranean solar sprout chamber due to frost advisories. I spent half a day doing those pepper sprouts. Don't want to lose them now.
  • Poor time management skills. If I sit down at the PC, I can write off an hour or two.
  • And here I was complaining about two patchy frosts this week. We have been in the 70's and 80's for the last couple three weeks. I already have peas and melons sprouting in the garden. I've been spending as much time on the trail as possible. Doing some section hikes on the Florida Trail near the house.
  • I'm hoping you got a dog, and this is not code for some kinky stuff us old folks don't need to be hearing. lol Hello friend. There is now 203 pounds of Larro, and I logged in to get that back down a stone or two. I'm starting a modified 5-2 on Tuesdays and Thursdays. {today is my first day. Calorie totals are yet to be…
  • An old rhyme I learned when doing research for my writing. A pint is a pound, the world around. It would be easier if that were still the case. But today a US gallon is 8.34, while an Imperial gallon is 10.002. Four liters is easier to figure. It's four kilos, or 8.8 pounds. Most hikers use the Smart Water bottles because…
  • Most hikes I carry two Smart Water bottles, the 1 and .7 liter {with my aquamira drops to treat more as needed}. But this time I used the 1 and 1.5, plus a one quart Gator Aid bottle full. I wanted to find out how my feet and pack would hold up under the weight. I found out 33 pounds is too heavy for both. I will have to…
  • Well, I also added some water, a little pillow to go between my knees, etc. etc. . . .
  • I added 5 little Cutie oranges to my pack and reweighed it this morning. 33.4 pounds. Man that fruit is heavy fuel.
  • The "primitive" camp site has a portapotty. Ha
  • I hiked at Torreya State Park yesterday and today {about 7 miles with 22 pound pack}, staying at the primitive camping site at Rock Bluff. Florida does have ups. All my batteries died, so not too many pictures. I'm going back in the morning to do the other trail, also about seven miles, then another night at Rock Bluff.…
  • If I were closer I would section hike some of the AT too. I've done some day hikes on the Florida Trail {it's 2 miles from the Larro Ranchero} and plan on overnighters soon. My schedule is a little more flexible {in theory} since Margie retired.
  • Thank you. I just stopped by for a bit of BOOM.
  • Jimmy Buffet has a song for that. https://youtube.com/watch?v=lxJwdDOVUPE
  • Sounds like a blast. I'm wanting to attempt a thru hike. 2023 looks like my time frame. Unless I win the lottery and/or retire early.
  • We will have to go over your resume and have a vote to see if you make the cut. Just kidding. You are in. Just post away. Larro
  • Hey guys. I've been walking with Margie everyday. With my new tent and 3 days of food, my pack weight is up to 25 pounds. For the last couple of weeks I've been doing an hour before lunch, then an hour after. Today I upped that to an hour fifteen, then did one minute on the stair-stepper with my pack. {did I mention there…
  • Margie and I went for a walk in the pines behind the house after breakfast. She has raked one of the rows so she feels safer in regards to snakes and other critters. She stopped after 40 minutes, I kept on for an hour. {with 20 pound pack} Hope everyone has a good day.
  • Margie and I did another behind the house hike this morning. It was a chilly 55F when we got out there. I picked up a new pack and trekking poles from Walmart.com this week. The 197 pound weakling is me. {sorry you can't see the pack in the picture} Got everything moved over to the new pack. With one L of water and 1 1/2…
  • That is great. A school buddy of mine came by last night. He was talking about his BS days and hiking to Philmont. He told a funny story about one of the higher ups who flew in to give them the bear/food talk. During the night a bear went into the man's tent and tore up his pack to get at his candy stash.
  • No BOOM???? Your fans are wanting more.
  • Margie and I walked in the pines behind the house for 20 minutes this morning. We are going into the Altha Diner for lunch before I head to work. For any of you guys wandering about the dining scene in Altha Florida, the Altha Diner is the best of the lot. It is also the whole lot. You guys have a good one.
  • Nice. A few years ago when I was spending my life in front of this keyboard, one of my stories was set in the Roman camps near Bristol {in 1718} with a little dream travel back to the final days of the Romans on the island. They did build things to last.
  • It rained all night at the Larro Ranchero, and has been spitting on and off this morning. Margie and I took a walk in the pines behind the house between showers. She forgot her fitbit,so no step count, but about 20 minutes. I changed up my shopping and cleaning days this week. My little old lady Filipino gardening buddy…
  • Beeps, you should check into a pee funnel {FUD}. Backpackers have been using them for years. Mainly to pee in a jug at night so you don't lose the heat from your tent by going outside. backpacker.com/gear/the-complete-guide-to-female-urination-devices
