  • Nothing is wrong with you. Plenty of people are in the same boat. It's the hand that life has dealt us. How you want to play the hand is up to you. Having lost most of my strength and cardio capacity over the last year, I kept wishing I hadn't let myself slide so far. Like you, I started walking again just to get some base…
  • You won't set any speed records dragging the trailer around. Hopefully it's flat enough where you live. With the small hills in my neighborhood, it was torture to me. The good news is you can exercise with them around via the trailer and maybe make it fun with games of iSpy, etc. You'll also really appreciate the power you…
  • I was reluctant to go to the gym after 8pm until I tried it. I eat a smaller/lighter dinner and then again after my workout. It might actually be helping me reduce calories. Dinner portions get reduced, and I'm sleeping during the after workout hunger pains.
  • Nice work! Please describe what type of exercise routine you developed.
  • It comes down to how often you drink and what you drink. You might try giving it up for a while. I had to give up drinking for a few weeks due to gout. When I did start having beers again, I truly appreciated them more. Lower ABV generally means fewer calories. Anything labeled as "session" beer is made to be less…
  • Chalk up another win for the food scale! I still get sad when I see what 28g of mixed nuts looks like.
  • +1 for Strava. It's conservative on its calorie calculations (probably underestimates), and it's low on battery usage. I used MapMyRide for a while but found it had a heavy drain on my phone battery.
  • I find a day off of logging it all every few weeks hasn't completely undone anything. Just don't do it too frequently or it will cut into your results. If you're at 500cal/day deficit, going over by 1500cal (the content of many restaurant desserts) would effectively undo 3 days of staying on your program.
  • Jake, those are some awesome results. Nice work! Could you post a sample workout? I do plenty of cardio and need to mix in some weights. I'm curious as to what lifts and how many sets you did starting out.
  • Scale reliability is important if you want to measure weight. Make sure even if the batteries are changed that it reads consistently with a few different times within a few minutes. Some scales can give different readings if they are sensitive to where you place your feet. My weight loss has slowed as I started riding…
  • The best thing you can do when you eat out a lot is portion control. Just because they set it in front of you, it doesn't mean you have to eat it. I've been known to indulge in a mocktail for work trips where it looks like I'm drinking, but I'm not. Order a club soda or a diet coke with a lime wedge. You'll have something…
  • Hang in there. I didn't notice much difference at the start. Now that the seasons are changing, I'm trying on things I hadn't worn in a while. It feels like a bigger difference when you wear something that's been in the back of the closet for months. My wife stopped me the other day saying, "You aren't wearing that, are…
  • After being diagnosed with gout in January, this is the path I'm supposed to follow. The Dr. said to just avoid red meat and alcohol while Dr. Internet said to go mostly vegetarian with limited animal protein. According to MFP, I generally go over on carbs and go under on protein and fat. Their estimates are generalized,…
  • Cycling is the best exercise in disguise. I'm glad to see you're enjoying it!
  • I use a Garmin 500 w/ HRM and cadence. I upload both to Strava and to Garmin Connect. The Strava calorie count is always about half of what Garmin Connect calculates. My last ride was 24 miles, and my Strava/Garmin figures were 807/1721 calories. MapMyRide was always in excess of what Strava provided back when I used them…
  • Hitting the reset button every once in a while is a normal process. I'm on try #3 myself. Will third time be the charm? I think so. It's all about choices. You have to make the first choice to get started. After that, each day is fill with choices as you have breakfast, lunch, and dinner. You'll make more choices as you…
