My Before and After
Now for something completely different. My recent kidney stone provided me with some cool CT scan images. Turns out I had a similar opportunity last year (appendix) before I started my diet. What luck, eh? :) Same guy. Same scale. 30-35lbs difference. Still enough fat left to feed me for a couple months. :) In case it's…

What's your Kryptonite?
After 6 months of low carb, I find that there are very few foods that still trigger cravings. Maybe chocolate. But the difference is that now I find it easy to control the amount I eat even if I satisfy my cravings. I had some DELICIOUS chocolate truffles today, and I felt full after just a couple of them. (OK, it was 4,…

How do newbies join this group?
I see the group is still being segregated from the general population. Is that a permanent change? There's something about "admin approval" in the "upgraded expectations" post, but there doesn't seem to be a "join" button any more. No "invite" either. Am I missing something? How do newbies join this group? Do we have to…

Ultimate Exercise Geekery: Keto-Adaptation
I finally watched this 2013 video presentation from Peter Attia: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NqwvcrA7oe8 Blog post here: http://eatingacademy.com/personal/my-quantified-self-part-i AFAIK, the effects he documents here have never been documented elsewhere. If you've ever tried to get a handle on the meaning of…

Sarcopenia
Your word of the day: Sarcopenia Sarcopenia (from Greek σάρξ sarx, "flesh" and πενία penia, "poverty") is the degenerative loss of skeletal muscle mass (0.5–1% loss per year after the age of 50), quality, and strength associated with aging. Over 50 and don't feel like exercising? Here's what happens: (quadriceps of a…

100 pushup challenge
There was some interest in this challenge in another thread. I've tried it for a few weeks, and I've been stuck at around 65 non-consecutive pushups for a while (the 16, 17, 14, 14, 20+ sets). I may try again with some carb loading to see if it helps. If you try it, feel free to post your results here, and include your…

Questions without Answers
Got any questions about low-carb or ketogenic diets that still bug you after much research? Post 'em here! I've got a bunch of 'em. :) Q: Does ketosis have any effect on weight loss, and if so, how? I've tried to find the answer, and the closest I can come is that ketosis seems to reduce a hunger hormone (ghrelin). Let me…

Free Kindle Books
I don't know how much longer these will be free. I've read his book on fasting, and it was pretty good (if you forgive him for his non-native English): http://www.amazon.com/Cristian-Vlad-Zot/e/B00NXABBPW/ref=dp_byline_cont_ebooks_1 Periodic Fasting, Ketone Power, and the Testosterone Protocol

Benefits of adding mileage?
I've been running for about 6 months now. I run about 5 days/week, 5K per day. Sometimes I'll run 8K or so, but 5K feels good, my strength and speed are still improving, and I'm injury-free. While I'm happy with my current mileage (and especially my injury-free status), I'm curious about those who run marathons and…

Dose-Response for Carbs
We talk a lot about different carb levels around here, but I've never been able to find a study that looked at the effects of varying those levels. This is known as the dose-response curve -- what response do you get as you vary the dose of carb intake? Turns out Volek did a study last year: Effects of Step-Wise Increases…

How much body fat in your diet?
Great slide from a presentation by Stephen Phinney: the four phases of a well-formulated ketogenic diet This shows a hypothetical 200lb person who starts off with a TDEE of 2800 kcal and progresses to 150lbs and a TDEE of 2200. So your high-fat diet is VERY high fat when your body fat contribution is considered. :)

Fasting Mimicking Diet
Interesting research from the team that told us high-protein diets encourage cancer cell growth: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/science/science-news/11683736/Five-day-fasting-diet-slows-down-ageing-and-may-add-years-to-life.html Day one of the diet comprises: 10 per cent protein, 56 per cent fat and 34 per cent…

The healthiest BMI
2013 meta-study of 2.88 million people: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23280227 HRs for overweight (BMI of 25-<30), obesity (BMI of ≥30), grade 1 obesity (BMI of 30-<35), and grades 2 and 3 obesity (BMI of ≥35) were calculated relative to normal weight (BMI of 18.5-<25). The summary HRs were 0.94 (95% CI, 0.91-0.96)…

Plants want to kill us!
Good article about new research in gluten sensitivities: https://rosemarycottageclinic.wordpress.com/2015/06/07/the-chemical-warfare-on-your-plate/ Turns out that FIT_Goat was right -- plants are trying to kill us! Most of the time, what fails to kill us makes us stronger, but not always...

Keto: Fringe or Mainstream?
I was telling a friend how I went back to a LC diet after trying it 10 years ago, and how this time everyone on the interwebz doing LC is now a biohacker during a ketogenic version of it. She said "Biohacker? Like Dave Asprey? I love his bulletproof coffee! And, yeah, everybody is into ketones now." Ooookay. So I guess…

Mosquitoes
I think it was @glossybubbles or @octobones who first mentioned this, but now that summer is here, how are your mosquito bites? I have to go to an outdoor party that we all dread due to the mosquitoes. I've already had a couple bites, but my ketone levels are lower than many of you. So, is ketosis keeping the mosquitoes…

What would happen if you ate ketones?
What would happen if you took some rats, gave them all an all-you-can-eat high-carb diet, but added some ketones to some of their meals? I love this study! http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2923987/ Feeding a ketone ester supplemented diet elevated blood ketone bodies to 3.5 mm (Table 2) while decreasing both…

High Fat
I may regret asking this, but tell me your thoughts about eating high fat. What do you feel the HF aspect of LCHF does? Is it possible to eat too much fat? Is there good fat and bad fat? I know some of you were trained on the old fat-is-evil mindset and then you changed your mind. What convinced you to change your mind?…

Instant Keto-Flu Relief
I have been out of ketosis recently. Towards the end of the no-tracking month, I had some BBQ baked beans and some other too-tasty treats. Once I started tracking again, I realized some of the stuff I ate had significant carbs. Anyway, today I had <40g carbs, and I ran about 4 miles. My ketostix are glowing purple. I was…

Fat-Head is now Protein-Head
Good article from the star of the Fat-Head movie: http://www.fathead-movie.com/index.php/2015/04/16/yes-its-a-high-protein-diet/ I admit it: I eat a high-protein diet. Not just low-carb, and not just high-fat. It’s high protein. I thought I should make a public confession because every time some dunce in the media opines…

Good Foods, Bad Foods
We're here because we (use to) overeat, right? I'm thinking that maybe we can create the definitive list of foods that trigger overeating for us as a warning for future eaters. I wonder if we have common triggers. What's a Good Food? Foods that are impossible to binge on. For example, I couldn't possibly eat a dozen…

Exercise cravings
I was itching to go to the gym this morning. No time right now. It's beautiful outside today, and now I'm craving to go out for a run. Am I the only one who gets exercise cravings? :) In theory, your body/brain can create these urges. It's part of the way it manages energy balance, just like hunger signals. Crazy, eh?

Gluten
I haven't eaten any bread or other wheat products for a couple months now. My wife just brought home some seitan kabobs. I said "I can't eat that -- that mock meat is made from gluten." Then I paused a second, and said "wait a second -- gluten is a protein." And I proceeded to eat it all up. :)

What's the Deal with Jimmy?
Jimmy Moore, the guy at la vida low carb: http://livinlavidalowcarb.com/blog/beforeandafter I don't follow him. I did read his keto clarity book, and I didn't love it. He's popular, I take it. And he's been doing keto for a while. Has he been gaining weight recently? I just noticed some pics of him (compare 2005 to 2012,…

Toasted Coconut Flakes
Maybe these have been mentioned before, and I missed it. New discovery for me: toasted coconut flakes. Wow! I was never a big fan of coconut, maybe a little in Thai curry, but that's all I could take. But I bought some packaged coconut chips at Costco to try as a snack, and I found them delicious but loaded with sugar and…
