Putting things in place now for maintenance
I’ve just started my 4th attempt at losing and maintaining. Each year I lose around 10kgs and almost reach my goal weight, then something in my mindset does a complete 180 and I stop everything. I don’t know why it happens but I just stop caring about how I look and feel. It’s like a switch goes off in my head and I want…

I need help and advice … please!!
Hi everyone, I’m back here after a long stint away and determined to do it differently this time. I’m a serial yo-yo dieter. I’ve come and gone from MFP numerous times over the last 8 years. I am now the biggest I’ve ever been and need to change my approach. The past 18 months have been really tough, which is partly why…

Garmin showing heart rate plummet during workout
This has happened a few times now, so today I monitored to see what was happening. I did a fairly intense, mostly weights but also cardio workout, and my Garmin vivofit recorded my heart rate dropping a lot during the workout (dee image below). At this point I was doing push ups and can tell you my heart rate was soaring,…

Back for another go, determined to do it this time
Hi everyone! I’ve been using MFP on and off for around 4 years now, and losing then gaining each time. I’m determined to do it differently this time so I can maintain as well. I need a lot of help to stay on track and love the support from the community here. If anyone would like to add me as a friend I’m always keen for…

Difference in nutritional value when fruit is blended?
My standard breakfast most days is a green smoothie with baby spinach, 5 strawberries, half cup blueberries, small chunk of avocado, no fat yoghurt and a half scoop of protein powder. I’ve recently started weight watchers and had been counting g the berries as zero points as fruit is zero. I discovered at a meeting today…

Daily calorie burn as suggested by activity tracker
So I bit the bullet and bought a Vivosmart 3. It seems to working Ok so far (apart from the clock not being accurate), but the total daily calorie burn is significantly higher than what my old vivosmart would give me. This one has a HR monitor built in, so I would have imagined it's more accurate, but it's so much higher.…

Have been let down by garmin in the past. Time to try Fitbit?
I've used 3 different Garmin products that have all had issues. The first, a HR monitor that would lose battery halfway through a run when started out fully charged. I gave up contacting Garmin after 3 failed attempts and just put that down to bad luck. I then got a vivosmart that had a faulty screen. I didn't use it…

TDEE calculation- musings. Interested in your thoughts
I've been at this weight loss thing for 15 weeks now and hit my first milestone today (22 lbs down). Along the way I've done periodic calculations of my TDEE to see how it compares to my vivofit. It seems to be about 200 calories a day higher. My vivofit puts me around 2100 on average, and the calculations just over 2300.…

Calories burnt in exercise questions
So I know that MFP, activity trackers, and machines all over estimate calories burnt. To date I've been entering about 50-60% of the exercise I do. I do this as I want as accurate a measure of my daily burn on my Garmin vivofit as I can. I've just started doing fitness blender workouts and enter about midway of their…

Slimming world - how can eating as much rice as you like really work???
I went away with some friends on the weekend who have all been doing slimming world; some have lost a fair bit, some not so much. They were telling me about it, and I just can't understand how a diet where you can eat as much as you like of something can possibly work. Eating as many veggies as you like maybe as they're…

300 calories a day average deficit
What would I expect to lose on this? I've lost 20lbs so far and down to my last 10 so thought I might slow down the weight loss a bit. I lost around 1 lb a week on 500 deficit a day, what would I expect to lose on 300 calorie deficit? Thanks!

I got 3 different weights in 1 minute- what's wrong with my scales?
I've been tracking my weight for 12 weeks now and often wonder if my scales are accurate, but today was the first time I stepped back on the scales after the first weigh in. I usually weigh in once a week on a Friday, unless it hasn't gone down, then I weigh in every day until it has gone down. I've weighed in the past 3…

Tell me about your HIIT class
I did my first HIIT class today and it wasn't what I expected. I heard it was a really tough class, obviously with high intensity activities (as the name suggests). Today's class was more of a circuit class with 40 secs on and 10 off, a mix of weights and core but not much high intensity cardio. I wouldn't imagine I would…

What the biggest loss you've seen in the scales between weigh ins?
It often amazes me the amount that drops between weigh ins sometimes. I know it's all water weight, but I just wonder where it goes. Sometimes I wonder if my scales are broken coz I certainly haven't peed out that much weight. The scales went down 3 lbs in 2 days!!! I weigh at the same time each time (first thing in the…

Double dipping with exercise calories
I've been wondering, if I log an exercise that uses a lot of steps (running, Zumba etc.) and then also include the calorie adjustment from my Garmin for the amount of steps I've done in a day, would that be double dipping in counting calories burnt? I did 5000 steps in my Zumba class today, so that would have added many…

Do you retain water more in hot weather?
We've had a heat wave here in London over the past four days. 32°C every day (90°F). No air On anywhere in this country so you just have to put up with it. I got on the scales this morning and have put on weight this week. The only variable being the heat. Could I be retaining water due to the heat?

How accurate do you think Garmin vivofit is without HRM?
I wear the vivofit but don't use the HRM. I do an average of 12000 steps a day as well as a range of different exercises throughout the week. I was thinking of changing my calorie intake to 500 below what my vivofit says I burn for the day. So today for example I've done 19000 steps in total which included 1 hr Zumba. In…

How many have you have stopped running due to injury?
Last year I worked my way up to running 5k using C25K. I almost got there and did a park run to see how far I could get. Throughout the whole run I felt a niggling little pain in my thigh & hip but kept going. I ran 4.2k then fast walked the rest. When I stopped & then walked slowly the pain was huge. After I'd stretched &…

Calculating exercise calories
Lots of people here have said the MFP overestimates the calories burnt through exercise. Does anyone have any other means that they calculate calories from exercise? Any formulas or other databases that may be more accurate?

How to encourage positive body images in your daughters
I've had many people say to me that they think my dieting will not help encourage positive body images in my 2 girls. So many people say I don't need to worry about what I'm eating and put so much emphasis on it. I've been easily swayed by these people's perceptions in the past, but have now decided that this is what I…

Trying to get over a bad day yesterday
All my hurdles with losing weight in the past have been due to having a bad day and then tossing it all in. I used to have regular get togethers with our neighbours & drink and eat loads. I absolutely love these get-together and would always say there's no way I'm giving that up, so just give up my diet. We've moved now &…

Something confusing me about BMR
I'm still getting my head around all the numbers. I've learnt so much this week. I've just done a bit of reading around BMR, and I understand that it's the amount of calories you burn doing nothing but existing (estimated of course as nothing is exact). Taking an average from a number of different online calculators my BMR…

I think I can do it!
I'm 12 lbs down which is half way to my original goal. I initially aimed for pre-pregnancy weight (143 lbs), and I'm halfway there after 6 weeks. I feel great and now with my new mind-set I think I could even keep going to my ideal weight (wedding weight - 135 lbs). I've tried so many times in the past but this time my…

What are those extra things aside from calorie intake and exercise that impact on weight loss?
So I'm talking here about what impacts the numbers on the scales. If you're in a calorie defect (weighing food) but the scales aren't showing it, what things are impacting on that? What causes water retention etc.? I've heard high sodium intake can, for girls time of the month can impact. What else?

If you have a fitness tracker synced to MFP ...?
Do you eat back the calorie adjustment it gives you? I've set my activity level to sedentary and walk about 11000-12000 a day, so my vivofit adjusts adding on around 100 calories extra each day to MFP. I have only been eating back the actual exercise calories and not the adjusted ones from my tracker. I'm still getting my…

Do you consider body fat percentage?
I've just bought new scales that calculate BMI & body fat percentage. I thought I'd been doing well, losing 11 lbs in 6 weeks, but my body fat percentage is 34%. That's not great. I read that 31% or less is considered good for women. Have you tracked your bodys fat %age? Ive just begun circuit training classes with some…

I can't believe I've only just discovered these!!
I've tried protein bars before but never really liked them, they really do taste like they're good for you. But not these 2, they taste just like a chocolate bar full of bad stuff, but they're low in carbs & sugars and great for protein. They're Fulfil Peanut & Caramel vitamin & protein bar, and Grenade Carb kills dark…

Using online calorie calculators vs MFP
The calorie intake I get when I use MFP based on light activity and losing 0.5-1 lb a week is only 1300. When I go into online calculators to work out my TDEE and then calorie intake to lose 1 lb (I've done 8 different ones) the amount is 1450-1550. Some of these take a lot of different things into account, such as body…
