Are negative pullups the best place to start?
Hi all I'm a 45yo female who despite being a competitive swimmer, has never ever been able to do a single pullup. I've been using the assisted pullup machine at the gym for the last four weeks, but don't think it's transferring to the real thing. Currently I can do a dead hang for about 90 seconds, but can't move…

Which race do you most want to watch at the Olympics
I mean swimming race of course. For me it has to be the men's 200IM - would like to see Lochte take it over Phelps.

What type of training method is this??
Hi everyone I am a swimmer with a new coach who has started me on dryland training. His method is different from what I've seen before and wondered if anyone is familiar with it. Basically it involves one set of nine different exercises, broken down as follows: 3 reps 4 reps 5 reps 6 reps 7 reps With a 5 second pause…

Counterweight in pullups
Can someone explain counterweights to me? If I weigh 112lbs and have the weight on the assisted pullup machine set at 84lbs, does that mean I am effectively pulling up 28lbs? Dumb question I know, but want to get my head around it!

Advice for hard gainers
I am a 45 yo female competitive swimmer who has never been successful in building muscle. Unfortunately gaining fat is much easier! Do you have any general tips on what sort of reps and sets work best when muscles are hard to come by? I eat a good amount of protein and generally pretty healthy food.

Lat pulldowns and pullups
Hi everyone Despite being a competitive swimmer, I have NEVER been able to do even one pullup. Not even in my youth. I have just started back at the gym and am wondering if working towards being able to do even one lat pulldown of your body weight should translate to being able to do one pullup. Or is it more complex than…

Who does strength training?
Hi all I have JUST rejoined the gym after a year off. I have always been a weakling and have never been able to do even one pullup. It's laughable how much strength I lack. At the moment this is my routine. Just finding the right starting weights etc. 10 minutes on rower ( which nearly kills me) Seated row 3 sets of 10…

How do you track your runs?
Keen to get recommendations on cheap sports watches. But also (and for me more importantly) for those of you who run with a smartphone rather than a sports watch, what phones have great battery life? I've had a s4 mini for nearly 2.5 years but the battery is increasingly rubbish and I need a new phone for a lot of reasons.…

Nortriptyline and reduced fitness??
Hi everyone. I have been on 10mg of Nortriptyline for the last 12 days to help with pain from severe ligament damage in my finger. So far I think it's helped a little with the pain and I'm certainly sleeping well, but I seem to be a lot less fit! I'm a competitive swimmer and I seem to be struggling in training sessions.…

Core training - who does it?
I've read lots about core strength for swimming but never really thought about actually doing any core training until now. Does anyone do it as part of their swim training, and if so, how often and what exercises?

Neutral running shoes
Hey everyone I'm nearly due for replacement shoes and curious about what's good. I currently have New Balance 790v3 which are quite light (7.6oz/215g) with about a 12mm heel drop. I have had them for two years and they're still comfortable as, probably because I've been sporadic with my running but I would have probably…

How did you choose your goal weight?
Did you use BMI or measurements or how you look/how clothes fit? Or something else? After years of being a slave to the scales I now go on how I feel most functional ie energy levels and sports performance (I am a competitive swimmer.) Ironically my weight fluctuates less now that I'm not counting calories or aiming for a…

Meets or events??
Has anyone got any pool or open water events they are training for? Last year was my first competitive season after 27 years off - had probably swum less than ten times total in those years!!

On a serious note....
We all know the effects of chlorine on our hair and skin. But I'm wondering what the health effects are of absorbing it through our skin with all the hours we spend in the pool. Presumably there are some consequences? Have seen mention of respiratory problems and eroded tooth enamel from it. Are the other minerals etc we…

Shoulder surgery? Help!
Anyone managed an out of place bicep tendon and superficial rotator cuff tear without surgery? I got MRI results yesterday showing torn supraspinatus muscle, plus bicep tendon has come completely out of place so is likely to rupture. This is all subsequent to a fall eight months ago (damn kids inflatable indoor…

Thermic effects of food - real or not??
Regarding the thermic effects of food (ie carbohydrates taking about 15% of their calories to burn and protein up to 30%) are these figures reliable and approximately equal for all individuals? Or is there significant variation among individuals ie do some people metabolise different macros more or less efficiently than…

Dead hangs
I am a competitive swimmer with ridiculously poor upper body strength. I have never ever been able to do even one pull up! Have started doing dead hangs as a starting point, and wondered what a respectable duration is to work up to and what the next stage would be.

What's your macro split???
Really interested in what people have their macros (carbs, protein, fat) set at and how they came to those numbers. For anyone who has set their own numbers (not the MFP ones which are really low in protein) how did you decide on your split?

Chlorine!!!
Anyone have tips how to get smell off the skin? I find that it takes at least 3 showers and by then its time to swim again!!

Confused!!!!!
Wondered if anyone could clear up some confusion. I had thought kettlebell workouts were much like strength training and required at least one day of rest between. But when you look at the large amount of programmes like the Breaking Muscle one which promotes 300 swings per day for 30 days or the 10000 swings in a month…

Has anyone ever.....
Ditched all their traditional cardio workouts and ONLY done kettlebell workouts? I had been focused on running and swimming but am wondering what would happen if I stopped those and did largely KB workouts - maybe something like KB 3 times a week with 1-2 runs and 1-2 swims.

Why am I more hungry
On a lower carb eating plan?? I am still eating the same if not more calories and am doing a 40 40 20 plan so it's not very low carb. I expected to be LESS hungry as had thought protein and fat were more satiating so am perplexed as to why I'm so much hungrier. This is day three of the new plan. Day one was a breeze but…

Calories burnt swimming in sea vs pool
Does anyone know if there is much difference in how many calories are burned swimming in the sea vs the pool? Did my first ever open water swim today (2km) and am curious how it might compare to 2km in the pool.
