How to optimize running and weight-lifting for lean muscle mass?
My running goal is to run a half-marathon. I've never been a serious runner - I was only running about 6-8 miles a week and then I got injured, so I've started again, but very slowly. I am running only about 3 miles a week right now. (Usually just a one mile run 3x/week.) At the same time, I'd like to get back into weight…

Need advice about dating an overweight person...
So obviously I am overweight and have been losing. My health has become an important part of my life and I think it should be important to anyone I date seriously. I have a close friend who has romantic feelings for me. (I won't bore you with the details...suffice it to say I'm old enough to know.) This relationship falls…

Scale going crazy after starting workout program
I started a pretty intense workout program and since then have gained 2 pounds. I understand that losing fat and gaining muscle can mean you don't always see a neat downward slope in weight loss ... but can it make the scale go crazy? Like, I will literally gain or lose 10 pounds in a 24 hour period, and yes, I always…

Need help estimating calories ... (carnival food)
I had a burger for lunch at our local street fair where they sell all sorts of carnival-type food. I would guess it was a quarter-pound patty, probably the type you buy frozen. I'd imagine that they buy cheap so it's probably pretty fatty meat. Anyone know of something that would be reasonably comparable on MFP? Then, I…

Ugh, does anyone else have scale dyslexia??
So I have a slight dyslexia with numbers (fun fact, it's actually called dyscalculia). I've been eating kind of poorly this week and not tracking my food, and was afraid I'd gain weight. I stepped on the scale ... 168.5 ... and thought, SWEET! My last weigh-in was 169, so I've lost! I get on MFP to check in, and discovered…

How to create a well-rounded workout plan?
For exercise, I like to jog (usually 1-2 miles at a time), do running-based HIT training (sprints, etc.), yoga, and weight lifting. Lately I've just been running and doing sprints, and I'm worried that I'm not getting enough balance in my workouts. Is there a way to create a workout plan that ties all these together? My…

Recommendations for a good knee ice pack?
My knees have a tendency to swell right beside the kneecap on the outside part. It forms a little golf ball-sized lump. :P I also have a tendency to fall down :( So, I end up needing to ice my knees a lot. I'd like to stop putting frozen peas on my leg and get a nice ice pack. I've tried some out and a lot seem to have too…

Yoga question I know has been asked a million times
Hey yall, So I know this has been debated on here before, but in the search results I can only seem to find info about hot yoga. I just did a Jillian Michaels Yoga Meltdown (level 1), which I oddly find more difficult than level 2! Anyway, MFP only lists calories for yoga and pilates, and both are 94 calories per half…

Is 45% of calories from protein too high?
I'm starting to use IIFYM. I had to tweak the exact numbers for MFP purposes, so I ended up with 45% from protein, 20% from carbs, and 35% from fat. Does this sound accurate/reasonable? It just seems like a lot of protein to me. But then, I really know nothing about this macronutrient business! :D

Still confused by macros, BMR, IIFYM ... please help :(
I have been trying to read up on macronutrients and have calculated mine at IIFYM (ihttp://iifym.com/iifym-calculator/). I have a few questions though and would really love some insight from some of you more experienced nutritionists :) My BMR according to IIFYM and MFP is was 1466. However, under "choose your goal", if I…

Anybody else get that mid-morning "shakiness"? What is that?
I typically eat breakfast around 8:00/8:30 and eat lunch by noon. I have a 32 ounce coffee with breakfast and drink it throughout the morning. Around 10:30-11:30, soon after I finish the coffee, I start getting this weird "tired but wired" feeling - it's like one part of me wants more coffee, because I'm sleepy, but…

Need plateau support ... going crazy
I am SO annoyed. I have been stuck at the same weight for about the last 6 weeks. I don't understand what I'm doing wrong, if anything, but here's what I'm doing: - Eating roughly 1300 calories a day (I lowered it by about 100 calories based on my new weight) - Exercising 3-5 times per week (HIT, running, etc. Usually at…

Recalculating calories after weight loss
Does MFP automatically recalculate your daily calorie intake when you lose or gain weight? Or do you need to fill out your profile again? When is a good time to reassess how many calories you should eat in a day - after 5 pounds lost? 10? More?

Sprinting and counting calories?
Okay, so I feel ignorant asking this ... but here goes. I have been training with my brother and we do a lot of sprints. Here is tonight's example: We took turns running sprints up a steep hill. I don't know what the distance is, but we do the same one each time, so we measure our time to look for improvements. Obviously…

I'm an idiot. But yay.
I started a new workout program, training with my brother, and the number on the scale was NOT budging. I tried to wait it out - I read about how many people gain weight after they start running because of water retention. I weighed myself on different scales to see how they compared. I took a good look at my calorie…

Do body fat scales actually work? If not, what does?
I'm on a tight budget, but I think my scale is going bad (not just because I disagree with it.) I'm wondering if it's worth the extra $20 or so to get a scale that claims to measure body fat percentage. If those type of scales do not work, is there something affordable that does? My gym doesn't have the electronic…

Curious - what do you count as exercise?
So my cousin and I were talking about MFP users who count "everyday" stuff like cleaning, taking the stairs, walking to destinations, etc. as exercise. My cousin and I agreed that if we burn calories doing those things, great, but they shouldn't take the place of an actual workout - they are just calories that will help us…

Tempura? Calories seem way too low
I looked up calories for prawn tempura. Most of the results I'm finding on MFP or other sites seem way too low - 60 calories for one piece. I feel like pieces of tempura (meat and veggies) are pretty big - plus they're fried! Anyone have a good way to estimate this? Thanks.

Short, intense workouts ... better than "slow and steady"?
Usually if I want to burn a lot of calories, I work harder (duh) and go longer ... but my brother, who is in great shape and something of a fitness nut, always tells me that intensity is really what matters, even if you can only go for a short time. Yesterday, among other things, one of the workouts we did was ... pushing…

Runners: questions from a beginner
Hello all, My goal is to run a 5K by October 12. Right now I am running a mile in about 11 minutes on a treadmill with no incline. Running a mile is very uncomfortable for me - painful joints, totally out of breath, red in the fact, etc. It is also an extremely tough mental challenge - the entire time, my brain is…

Cooked pasta vs. uncooked, by the ounce
So I made the mistake of not weighing how much pasta I would eat for lunch *before* I cooked it. It is 2.3 ounces cooked, but I cannot figure out anywhere (MFP or anywhere else) how many calories pasta has per ounce AFTER it is cooked. Help, please! :) It's regular ol' fettucine.

New to MFP, definitely not to weight loss
Hello! :) I started using MFP about a week ago and I love it already. I have yo-yo'd with my weight for pretty much the last 10+ years - ever since I was a college freshman. This was one of those unfortunate"two pounds gained, one pound lost" type weight lost cycles where my weight mostly increased over time. I spent most…
