How to create a well-rounded workout plan?

For exercise, I like to jog (usually 1-2 miles at a time), do running-based HIT training (sprints, etc.), yoga, and weight lifting. Lately I've just been running and doing sprints, and I'm worried that I'm not getting enough balance in my workouts. Is there a way to create a workout plan that ties all these together? My goal is to lose fat, gain muscle/strength, and increase my overall fitness level. One of my goals is to run a 5k (as in, run the whole way, no walking) in October. I'd also like to improve my balance and flexibility, which is where yoga comes in.

Any suggestions about how many times per week I should do each one?

I'm female and 5'2"/170 pounds. Thanks for any input! :)

Weight lifting I personally do 3 times a week and never two days in a row. ( with some cardio after)

I play soccer 3 days as well and I find that it's a balance.

If you want to increase your fitness, I would say weight training I (with some cardio) and HIIT 3 times a week, then yoga once or something. Don't overdo it every single day.

I have to agree with the strength training. Since I stared 2 months ago I feel pretty darned great. It's helped me with my cardio in that I can go longer. For now I'm doing 3 days cardio and 2 days strength training. Will up it after this week. Good luck!

I'm not a fan of trying to do a little bit of everything. I've had better progress when I focus my training on one narrowly-defined goal at a time.

Lift 3x weekly full body. Run 3x weekly on your non lifting days. Do some yoga once per week; I do my yoga on rest days.
  • I agree with most of the replies here about strength training three days and doing running and yoga two other times per week. Two rest days and a yoga day normally keep me from over-training and becoming tense.

I create a workout plan every week to motivate others, track my fitness goals and have fun. I post this new plan on my blog Hungry Gator Gal every Wednesday. Check out my past routines with links to my favorite workouts at http://www.hungrygatorgal.com/p/fitness.html.

    I hope this helps!
