Does FitBit really work
So, I"m not sure if this is the proper forum section or not, but I'll give it a go anyway. I'm thinking about getting a FitBit or one of the other similar devices, but I'm curious as to how effective they are. I look at, for instance, the calorie count on a treadmill or elliptical where I can type in my weight and age and…

A very special experience
I wanted to share this with all of you here on MFP. It may not be exactly a success story or an NSV, but it is a very cherished experience that came about as a result of my Journey towards Health. This past weekend, my eldest son, Mike, who has been away at college, came home for a visit. He walked in the door and we were…

An intersting sort of NSV
So this may or may not qualify as an "official" NSV, but I thought it was kind of cool. I woke up this morning and was getting ready when I realized that I felt comfortable in the clothes. It dawned on me that for the past several weeks I've been able to wear clothes that I couldn't wear for a long time and that was cool.…

I've been thinking...
So, lately, as I've been shrinking out of clothes and looking for new ones on a limited budget, I've been thinking about how difficult it is for a guy my size (6'7", 370 lbs) to find clothes at a thrift store or discount store. I'm wondering if all of you have similar experiences. I can find lots of clothes at the…

Why Can't I See It?
So, I've lost 122 lbs over the past 8 months, and I know that's a HUGE achievement, so I don't mean to downplay that at all, but... ...I get discouraged when I look in the mirror and still see the flab hanging from me, the oversized, mis-shapen belly and the general overall lumpiness. I look at all the before/during/after…

My daughter and my NSV
So...yesterday my daughters had a friend over to play when the ice cream truck rolled by. My youngest grabbed her wallet and ran out to buy her favorite goodie. She came back with a drumstick in hand. They were all talking about it (they hadn't seen one before) and brought it over to show me. I looked it over and handed it…

I've Lost a Holly!!!
A few months ago I posted about having lost the equivalent of my youngest daughter, Jenny. Well, this morning I moved up the ladder of children and lost the equivalent of my eldest daughter, Holly! Woohoo!!! Next up, my 6'1" 15 year old son...YIKES!

Needing some advice, please
The other day my wife was asking me how I'd advise someone with overweight children (in the obese category) to help them change to a healthier lifestyle. I gave her some basic things I've learned in my journey (far from over). Turns out the woman she was asking about was my sister-in-law. A great family overall, but I've…

Fighting through the plateau
Hi all, I've hit a rough patch. I seem to have plateaued despite all my best efforts. I am well below my recommended calorie count (by all the machinations I can figure out and find)--staying under 2000 every day. I am not exercising as much as I'd like because some foot issues have sidelined me. The food I put into my…

Vehicular NSV
I had a vehicle-related NSV today, it was pretty cool. Let me explain... First a little backstory: a few years ago we purchased an old 1996 Honda Civic as a commuter vehicle. It was old, but it was a Honda so we knew it would run forever (let's not make this a debate extolling or deriding various vehicles). When I would…

My latest NSV
Due to some foot problems, I have been confined to a wheelchair for the past few weeks. As a result, I haven't had much call to stand and see how my belts and pants were fitting. When I started this journey (almost 100 lbs ago) I was wearing size 56 waist, and even those were tight. We had bought me a belt that was big (to…

I've lost a Jenny!
One of my milestones that my daughter Jenny (who shares a birthday with me) and I set a few months ago was when I had lost 70 lbs I would have lost a Jenny! I'm now at 73 lbs down and so we get to celebrate as I have now "lost a Jenny" woohoo. Next up is Holly, my second youngest. :)

My coolest NSV
So today, I had just finished an hour of pretty intense cardio (bike and elliptical) and was heading to the sauna, when one of the "gym rats" (the regular, always-lifting, someday-I-wanna-look-like-that, types) goes out of his way to walk over to me. He walks up and says "how much you lost, man?" "I haven't been here at…

One milestone hit!
As of today I hit my first major milestone: the 50 lbs gone mark. Technically 2 since I also hit the "under 450 lbs" mark as well. I am down 54 pounds in total since joining MFP. Still a long way to go to my goal, but progress is progress. Had to put another hole in the belt and my shirts that I used to wear untucked I can…

Discouragement vs. Motivation
So I ran into an interesting conundrum this weekend. I'd like to run it up the MFP flagpole and see if others have encountered this as well. (I truly value the MFP community and loving the support and encouragement that comes here). So here's the situation: My son was looking through old family photos trying to find some…
