The Health of My Soul
Today's devotion from A Catholic Woman's Book of Days by Amy Wellborn... "Train yourself in godliness, for, while physical training is of some value, godliness is valuable in every way, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come. 1 Timothy 4:7-8 Well. How much time have I spent tending to my physical…

Weight Training While Pregnant
I would love to hear from any ladies who continued weight training throughout your pregnancy or from any personal trainers who have worked with pregnant women. I have continued martial arts training throughout pregnancy before (and plan to continue with that this time), but this will be my first experience with weight…

Who has watched the new Star Trek?
I saw it in 3D last night. While I was impressed with the 3D effects, I was not as impressed with the story. There were some things in this one I just found...wrong. Anyone else seen it?

The Bean Recipe Thread
Every once in awhile, I see someone posting a thread asking what to do with beans. I thought maybe it would be cool to have a bunch of bean ideas and recipes in one place. There have been times where I've stayed home with the children and money has been tight, and I would substitute beans for meat in most of our meals. One…

RIP O-Sensei Fukuda
From Black Belt magazine... It is with a great deal of sadness that we report that O-Sensei Keiko Fukuda passed away at the age of ninety nine this past Saturday. Professor Fukuda devoted nearly her entire life to learning and then teaching the purest form of Kodokan judo, personally taught to her by the founder of judo,…

Baby's Baptism
We are from a small mission parish and have to share a priest with 2-3 other parishes, spread out over 30-45 miles apart. Our beloved priest was reassigned right after our baby was born. We like to baptize our babies as soon as possible, and our new priest agreed to baptize him this past Sunday...and then found out…

Every cloud has a silver lining?
I have lamented over my big booty and thick thighs for years. If I find a pair of jeans that fit in my butt, they are going to be loose around my waist. If they fit my waist, they are going to be too tight on my thighs. Today as I was getting dressed and performing my ritual shimmy-shimmy-shake dance, it dawned on me.…

Ave Maria
This is hands-down my favorite version and rendition: http://youtu.be/VWWv2D3IfTw (I'm just disappointed that these talented gentlemen never released a CD--the only access I have to their lovely voices are their recorded practices.) Do you have a favorite Ave Maria? Please share!

Movies you HATE
...that everyone else seems to love? I hate The Notebook. My husband loved it. I watched it with him once. That was enough. Same with The Titanic. By the end, I was saying "hurry up and SINK already!" And Twilight. The acting was so painful, I couldn't finish it.

Who's dressing up for Halloween?
I don't care if I'm almost 40--I cannot resist the opportunity to walk around in public with a ninja suit on!

Bow hunters?
I'm interested in learning to shoot a bow. A recurve, maybe? They seem like they would take more strength and skill? Plus I think they are prettier. And they seem to be less expensive than compound bows. What should I look for? How to get started? I would like to hear especially from any lady bow hunters., but I welcome…

Please make me smile!
I'm having a horrible day. I really need some silliness. Or a cyber hug.

HRM wearers--anyone willing to expirement?
I am considering buying a HRM, but I'd like to know if it's really necessary to spend the money. Right now, when I work out, I have the timer going on my iphone. When I slow down between exercises to catch my breath, I do a quick 6 second pulse check. Then I take the average HR and plug it in here:…

Is your SO also on MFP?
Just wondering how many "teams" we have here! My hubby is Joyfuldadzie, though he's much quieter than I am (just like IRL.) Even so, it's fun having him on my friends list and being on this healthy journey together.

Book Recommendations
What martial arts books are you reading? What have you read? I'm looking for books to add to my reading list. I just started "Aikido and the Dynamic Sphere" (A. Westbrook and O. Ratti) I've read... "The Art of Peace" (Morihei Ueshiba) "The Art of War" (Sun Tzu) "The Tao of Jeet Kune Do" (Bruce Lee) "The Law and Martial…

Protein Bars?
I'm thinking of keeping a couple stashed in my purse for those afternoons when I'm dragging, on the run, and tempted to pull through a drive through. I got a Cliff bar while stopping for gas this afternoon, and it kept me going til I could get home and fix supper. I do like to avoid soy, though, and I noticed the first…

Pregnant Mama Roll Call!
I'm looking for other expectant mamas who are trying to stay healthy and active throughout pregnancy! I think I only have a couple other pregnant mamas on my friends list. How far along are you? What # pregnancy is this for you? What are your goals? What is your biggest struggle right now? (Is there already a group on here…

Home birth mamas?
Just wondering how many here prefer to birth at home? After 3 hospital/epidural births and 1 hospital birth with no interventions (other than a saline lock), this will be my 3rd home birth with a midwife. I love my midwives!

What abs exercises are you doing?
I have continued with weight lifting (including ab work) and martial arts, but at 14 weeks, I can tell I'm going to have to make some modifications in the near future. Right now my plan for abs is to do different plank modifications, as planks are still comfortable for me. I'd love to hear from other mamas who have…

My Hubby Was Right (pics)
For years, he told me I was being too hard on myself. For years, I hated looking like this: And I would starve myself. And exercise to the extreme. And finally give up because it was too hard to maintain. And gain back everything I'd lost. And do it all over again (and again and again). At the left, I was at my highest…

Facepalm
I like to pamper myself when I'm pregnant and try to make myself look "pretty" to combat the fatigue and blahs. I've figured out before that the beauty shop is a no-go during first trimester because of all the smells. Well, today I figured I'd put a henna rinse on my hair to cover the grays that are starting to show…

It's good to slow it down sometimes
I must confess that I've fallen into the trap of turning my martial arts workouts into little more than calorie-burning sessions. My focus has been on increasing my speed and power, hitting the bag full power, keeping my heart-rate up... (and these things are all good, mind you, but...) I've been sick this week, and…

Hi, y'all
I just found this group, so I thought I'd introduce myself. I have six children--my 18yo will be graduating from public school in a couple months, I'm schooling my 10yo, 7yo, and 5yo, and I have a 3yo and 11mo to work around as well. I'd love to make friends with some other homeschooling mamas who have made their own…

Trekkies, help me with ideas!
My 11yo daughter wants a Star Trek (original series) themed party for her birthday. I'm going to use yellow/gold, red, and blue for the plates, cups, napkins, and balloons. The cake is going to be round with orange icing and the USS Enterprise atop it. For games, we are going to have a "Tribble Toss" (where we will toss…
