Protein Bars?

I'm thinking of keeping a couple stashed in my purse for those afternoons when I'm dragging, on the run, and tempted to pull through a drive through. I got a Cliff bar while stopping for gas this afternoon, and it kept me going til I could get home and fix supper. I do like to avoid soy, though, and I noticed the first ingredient was "soy protein isolate". Do they make any with whey protein instead? What about taste? Cost? Sugar content?
I'd welcome your recommendations.

There are many made with whey protein, but read the labels carefully before buying. Many of the so-called "protein bars" are not much more than glorified, thinly disguised (and ridiculously expensive) candy bars.

Muscle milk has 2 out that are pretty good not sure of the sugar content. My fav is the metrx 100 choclate chip cookie dough tastes great and not dry like alot of them.

Being allergic to whey...trust me when I say that you will find so many more protein bars with whey than soy. The only protein bars I can eat are Clif and One other kind I cannot think of right now it is Chocolate peanut butter flavor though. Anyways, if you want whey you have so many options!

Check the above out. Not only are they natural but they also won't melt in your purse. They are a bit chewey but I don't consider that a bad thing. I have tried all but coconut and none are not edible.

Thanks, y'all! Today was the first day I've ever even tried a protein bar. I was feeling shakey, looking for something quick to grab, and they were right there. And didn't make me feel sick afterward like a candy bar or chips would have. I'll look into these.

    Hmm...

I wonder how a fresh banana and a handful of trail mix would fare in comparison to most protein bars?
  • I love my Think Thin Protein bars, sugar free, gluten free, and they are sooo delis!!!

I do well at getting in my fresh fruits and veggies and nuts every day, but protein is where I come up short (right now with workouts and pregnancy, I am aiming at 1.5 x my weight in kg).
An oz of almonds only has 6 grams of protein. Avocado has the highest protein of any fruit--at 4gm, but they are not very portable. Bananas have 2gm.

Added--I don't see protein bars as a meal replacement or even something I would eat on a daily basis. Just a "tide me over" supplement when I am on the run.

I like the "Pure Protein" bars. 20g protein and only 2g sugar. I like them so much I can't buy them by the case or else I'll eat them all in one day.

I recently tried a Rise almond honey protein+ bar and I liked it much more than some of the soy ones I've tried. I too would like to avoid soy. I'm not sure what the plus is for. This has whey protein in it.

(^Amazon link was the first Google match - I was just lazy and went with that one to copy and paste here)
  • I'm one who probably tired most protein bars on market LOL
Pure Protein bars are pretty good (20g. protein)
Detour bars are yummy (15g protein)
but QUEST bars are the best... i've tried all flavors- they're all delicious.. and if u microwave the bar for 10-15 seconds it tastes like a chewy cookie YUM!.. excellent source of protein (20g) and fiber (16g+), and low net carbs!

good luck finding the right one for u!

My sentiment EXACTLY!!! I've found Power Crunch bars. Low carb, whey protein, good price. Only downside for me is the use of splenda. Still I eat them.
I'd like to get Dr Mercola's whey protein bars... mercola.com
