Measuring body fat %
I know the hydro or DEXA testing is the accurate way to measure body fat percent. But since that is not an option. Is there a second more accurate way to measure body fat %? My bathroom scale presently shows 22%, Dr did caliper at 16-18%, and an online calculator using measurements weight etc shows 11%. Obviously there is…

Long slow distance run help
So I am using the FIRST training method. That has my training at very specific times and distances. I'm struggling with my LSD run. I'm training at a 9:40 mpm half pace. Is was set by my last half time and confirmed its right based on my 5k a few weeks ago based on the proper table. My pace isn't the problem. The problem…

PR'd my 5K
I'm pretty pleased. I PR'd my 5K with my son today. It was 27:20 or 8:49 MPM. I was 282 out of almost 1800 and 6th of 160 in age group. Top 6 finishers in each age group get ribbons, we didn't wait around for those, who would have ever thought :) My 12 yo got 2nd in his age division at 24:02 and 105th overall. Had he even…

Body Sculpting for Women & Other Programs
This is the program I started using kettlebells with. Loved it. It's Lorna Kleidman's book. Comes with three levels of programs and a well illustrated book. I'm hoping she comes out with a video someday. What other programs or videos you using? I have the video 10 Minute Solutions for Kettlebell and Amy Bento Kettlebells.…

Net Calories
I'm excellent at posting every calorie as best as I possibly can, like even a bite of something off my kids plate gets logged. So I just looked at my "monthly" report and saw that in 10 days of the last 30, my net calories were UNDER 0. This is due to exercise. I have my "base" set at 1500 and attempt to eat back exercise…

Tai Chi
I'm starting a Tai Chi class tomorrow -it's 2 nights per week, I may be only to attend one. I have read the book ChiRunning and practice the principals. My goal is to assist with my running through stretching and mental focus. Does anyone do Tai Chi that can tell me what to expect? Or if I will be bored to tears. How do I…

Hydration Percentage
I have a new scale that does body fat % and hydration. I'm not counting on the body fat % to be extremely accurate - but I know it can be effected by hydration levels. I'm curious to know what the "hydration %" should be at. I'm at about 54% every AM when I weigh - so I tried weight in the afternoon, after I've had Am…

FIRST: Run Faster Train Less
Has anyone used this system for training. It's a run 3days per week and xcross train 2 days. I"m currently HIIT Training, Yoga and one day of running, but I really want to work on speed sets, which I know means I need to do at least one more day of running. I'm presently reading the book - and will start this method after…

Quad Imbalance
When I trained for my marathon i ended up with an imbalance in my quads and knee pain. I spent time at the Massage therapist earlier week to work on stretching seemed to help, until Tai Chi last night, I did something and knee pain came back. I am worried if I go to the Dr, he will only want to discuss surgery - like last…

Coconut Flour
Anyone have any great things they've made using coconut flour? I've used it to add to items, but I've heard you can actually use it independently in recipes. It's awesome in pancakes.

Understanding body fat %
I'm just curious, I bought a scale with a body fat % on it. I generally use a very expensive high quality one for athletic teams, but for convenience, I opted for just a simple one to use daily. It's my own thing, please don't try to convince me not to weigh every day, that's not my question. I'm trying to figure out why -…

Annoyances
Can I just vent for a moment? Both of my kids have celiac, I've never been diagnosed (blood work was negative) have no symptoms but eat gluten free because it's just the lifestyle we have with two kids. My mom was diagnosed (maybe) after my kids and now is on an independent mission to diagnosis everyone she knows with…

Insanity: Asylum Question
I just started Asylum today, it's a 30 day program. My question is - I'm also a runner and will be maintaining my running through the program. What I did in Insanity and it worked, was I skipped a workout a week and ran a long run instead. But as Asylum is a little more intense, I'm curious if I should not "skip" the work…

My children's idea to help
So my kids know that I have an incredible sweet tooth, which I work very very hard to avoid. They have been making their own school lunch "treats" They have baked apple crisp and made their own gluten free cookies. Along with selling the apple crisp to the neighbors, they decided that if "I" want a cookie - they are $.50…

Health Warrior Chia Bars
In case anyone was interested in these: 100 calories. They are like a chia cracker, and are gluten free. The taste and texture are fairly good as well. I have been using them as my AM snack once a week. 4.5 g total fat .05 saturated 0 trans 2g polyunsaturated 1 g monounsaturated 35 mg sodium 15 g carb 3 g dietary fiber 3 g…

Complaint of Bicyclists
I enjoy riding my bike to work - and try to it regularly but never really feel safe. My kids head back to school this week, and we will ride daily while the weather holds up. I run - they ride. It's 2 miles there - I run back home, then ride to my office, 2 miles - they ride the 2 miles to my office and we ride home…

Running Help Please
I want to train through the winter to maintain 10 miles. I have no idea how, I only can find training plans for races. I want to run half marathons in March and May. Last winter was my first winter running and I'd just completed my first marathon, I did P90X and Insanity through the winter. I still plan on doing this, but…

Recovery
Just thought I would share my story of recovery for anyone wondering the other benefits of diet and exercise. In June 2009, I decided I needed to lose weight and get fit. I didn't know the journey I took would get me here. I lost some weight, started running, completed a marathon, kept running. I added in P90X and…

Pulled Muscle
I pulled out my kettlebell video this AM which I haven't done in 6 months. And I pulled a muscle in my leg. I knew when I was "stretching" that she hadn't had a good enough warm up for the stretch, but I followed the DVD anyway. Tomorrow is my rest day and I'm planning on a 10 mile run on Saturday. It's my rt calf that is…

Weird HRM reading?
I use my HRM when I do my indoor workouts. I did Insanity, Sports Interval Training this AM. My resting heart rate is about 62. So after my warm up I looked down and saw my HR was at 73, I really felt good and warmed up and was in that hard time talking through mode. So I proceeded with my workout as normal - but I would…

Bad News
Some days it's really hard to stay focused on myself for my diet and fitness. My best friend called this AM. Her husband has been fighting bone cancer for 4 years. I've watched the highs and lows - and simply just don't ever know the right thing to say or do. He now has an aggressive acute form of leukemia! I'd given up…

Bike compared to Run
So in my training plan for a 1/2 marathon at the end of June, I had a 4 mile run yesterday. I also biked 6 miles to school with the kids, to work, then home after work. My legs were a bit fatigued more today than what they generally are after 4 miles. I run frequently and have for the past year+, I've completed a marathon,…

Royal Wedding
Apparently the owners got the name correct - and it cost the bookies bunches of money! http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/42825956 LONDON — It was a good day for a Royal Wedding, even on one of Britain's race courses. The aptly named Royal Wedding won a race at Fontwell on Friday, with the 4-1 shot holding off Take A Mile to…

Sensa?
Not for me :) Here's the deal - I've made my boss a $1,000 bet that he can't lose weight by July 4. He says he can be down to 180 by then - which is about 30lbs (he says, I have no idea, just know he's fat). I ran his BMI and it would take him being 174 to be in a "healthy" bmi, but he won't bet that. So I think he is…

Starvation Mode
I've read many of the MFP posts on eating your calories back and going into starvation mode. There is one thing that just keeps eluding me. If my body actually shuts down and quits losing weight because I were in "starvation mode" and I need to eat more to lose weight - how does someone become anexoric? Not that I want to…
