White kidney bean extract may be working
For about a month now I've been taking white kidney bean extract capsules, AKA "Phase 2" starch neutralizer right before I have a high carb meal (about 2-3 times per week) and I think it may be making a difference. I had been stuck in a rut and a week after starting to take the capsules, I lost 2 pounds and then another…

Why is full fat yogurt harder to find?
I've recently switched from fat-free vanilla flavored yogurt to full fat plain yogurt and I've noticed that the only places that sell full fat yogurt are specialty/natural food/health food stores (like Trader Joe's, Fresh Market, Whole Foods, local co-ops, etc). Why don't regular grocery stores and places like Wal-Mart…

Tofurky for Thanksgiving?
So, I'm thinking of making a Tofurky roast for my Thanksgiving guests this year. Anyone eaten one? Does it taste good or at all turkey-like?.

Anyone that's had a pyloromyotomy? (pyloric stenosis)
I underwent a pyloromyotomy (surgery for pyloric stenosis) as an infant have had a belly pooch all of my life -- even as a little kid. I ate lots of junk and didn't exercise much as a kid and teenager but was so skinny I was almost underweight and had no fat on me anywhere except my belly. In adulthood, I slowly gained 50…

Does MFP adjust your calorie goal as you age?
I read somewhere recently that women, in order to maintain their weight, need to eat fewer calories once they hit menopause/are in their 50s. In fact, most women need to eat around 200 calories less per day in their 50s than they do in their 30s and 40s. Does MFP take age into consideration when setting calorie goals?

Happy February!
Hope everyone's year is off to a good start! I had been doing much better with not binging, and then I had to go halfway across the country for my grandpa's funeral and it was 2 days of eating in the car and fattening family dinners. My aunts, uncles, and cousins live all over the country and, unfortunately, we pretty much…

Fat Coming Off Disproporitonally
Like many people, I've always carried most of my weight around my lower abdomen. Since reaching my goal weight a year ago, I've been working on taking off the lower belly pooch that remains. I've never had kids, but I've had this roll of fat in that area since I was about 8 years old, even though I was very skinny…

workplace parties
I wanted to get everyone's opinion on something that happened at work. I am starting my fourth year as a teacher at a private school. There are 19 teachers in my division (lower school), plus our division head. There's another teacher at my school that is going through a separation from her husband and is moving out and…

All or Nothing Mentality
When people ask me how I've lost over 50 lbs. and kept it off for a year, I have to say that getting rid of that "all or nothing" mentality, that made me fail in the past, is what allowed me to succeed this time. If you're someone that thinks you've "blown it" for the week and are planning on starting over fresh on Monday,…

What's so bad about granola bars?
I don't understand all of the hatin' on granola bars, protein bars, Luna bars, Larabars, etc. Some people sneer "They're just candy bars." Last time I checked, most candy bars don't contain oats or have the same amounts of protein and fiber. Sure, they contain sugar, and I would never consider them "health food" but…

breaking through the plateau - what worked for me
Many that are trying to lose weight eventually reach a plateau and this can be very frustrating. For some, the plateau can last a few weeks. For others, several months. In my 46 week long weight loss journey where I lost 45 lbs. (I've since dropped another 8 during "maintenance.") there were four times when I stopped…

losing height - weigh less?
This is something I've always wondered about but have never gotten a definitive answer. I have been 5'5" for most of my adult life, but recently have found out that over the last few years I've lost an inch of height (probably due to disk compression in my back and/or neck) and I'm now 5'4". Does this mean that I should…

Still Losing While Eating Maintenance Calories
OK, so this week I haven't done very well with my eating. Suddenly I've been hungry *all* the time and have been craving high carb foods. I've gone a little over, stayed right at, or have been just under the 1540 calories that I'm supposed to eat. Despite that, I've seen the scale go down and down this week and I finished…

Big boned/Small boned
I have always considered myself to be "small boned." I have 35 inch hips, a 5 inch wrist, and wear a size 4 ring. Recently, two different people have told me that bone size doesn't really matter as to what you should weigh, that bones are bones and we're all pretty much the same in that area. One person said that many…

The Importance of Protein
I've recently come to realize how important it is to get enough protein. I'm a picky eater, don't eat red meat or poultry, and I have to limit dairy due to a chronic sinus condition so getting enough protein has always been a challenge for me. I met my goal weight about 2 months ago, but still felt flabby in some areas and…

One year ago today...
One year ago today, I started my weight loss journey. I suffer from a chronic auto-immune sinus condition and, at the urging of a friend, had decided to try a gluten free/dairy free diet to see if these foods might be triggering the auto-immune response. At the end of 2 months on this diet, I reintroduced gluten and then…

What to do with old, too big clothes?
Those of you that have reached your goal weight: What are you doing, or have you done, with your old clothes that are now too big? I have clothes ranging in sizes from 14 to 6. Do you give them away, have them altered, or keep them? Lots of friends and family are telling me I should keep them all, even the 14s, in case I…

Two cool NSVs today
Today I recorded a resting heart rate of 59 bmp. I've had tachycardia all my life -- even when I was younger and thinner my resting HR was often in the upper 90s -- and I didn't think my HR could get that low! All those hours at the gym are paying off. Also, a friend posted on Facebook some recent pictures with me in them…

a little nervous about continuing to lose for the next two w
For the next two weeks, I'll be living 2 hours away from home on a college campus in a dorm, will have no access to a kitchen, and will be eating pretty much all of my meals out. This makes me a little nervous, as the reason I've been able to lose weight for the last 9 months is that I eat most of my meals at home,…

Trying something new - tired of the plateau
Since school let out at the beginning of June, my weight loss has come to a screeching halt and I even gained back two pounds. Since I started losing weight back in September, I've averaged a 1 pound/week weight loss. I always figured that I'd hit a plateau some day but I sure didn't think it would be now with 4 pounds to…

My cellulite is gone!
For as long as I can remember, I have always had cellulite on the backs of my upper thighs, even when I was in my mid 20s and was thinner than I am now. This morning I caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror from the back and noticed that it's all gone! W00t!!

Interesting article about sizing in women's clothing
http://www.cleveland.com/style/index.ssf/2010/08/size_14_is_average_american_wo.html When I was a size 14 I mostly squeezed myself into my old size 12s or hid under clothing that was too big.

losing too much weight in some places, not enough in others
So far I've lost 35 pounds, but those pounds are coming off very disproportionately. My face is starting to look gaunt, my boobs have shrunk to almost nothing, and I'm starting to get skinny legs. However, I still have a big roll of fat around the middle (a smaller roll than before I started losing, but still a roll) and…

Styles over 40
Hi All, I'm 41 years old, have lost 33 pounds, and am finally starting to look trim and fit. My dilemma: Since I'm newly "over 40" and haven't really been trim since I was in my 20s, I'm having a hard time deciding what to wear. For most of my 30s, I was 10-20 pounds overweight and, worse than that, had large unsightly…

updating my goal weight
When I joined this site I was at the heaviest I have ever been -- 176 pounds on a small frame standing 5 feet 5 inches tall. I felt huge and like I was walking around in another person's body. From the time I was a little kid up until I graduated college, I was always thin -- at times even underweight -- without dieting or…

newbie
Hi All, I've been on this site for about 3 weeks now and thought it was time to introduce myself. I'm enjoying reading the posts and tracking my calories. I lost 8 pounds on my own and since joining MFP lost another 2... another 30 to go!
