losing height - weigh less?

This is something I've always wondered about but have never gotten a definitive answer.

I have been 5'5" for most of my adult life, but recently have found out that over the last few years I've lost an inch of height (probably due to disk compression in my back and/or neck) and I'm now 5'4". Does this mean that I should now enter that as my height when calculating what my weight/BMI should be? A "fitness expert" that came to my workplace (I'm not sure what her credentials are) says yes. I should now be a normal weight for a person of 5 feet 4 inches, not 5 feet, 5 inches. My husband, who is a physical therapist assistant, says no -- I should still enter my height as 5'5" because my body mass hasn't changed. The BMI calculators figure on 10 pounds per inch of height. It doesn't make sense to him (or me) that because of a few compressed disks I should now weigh 10 pounds less than I did a few years ago when I was 5'5". It's not a big concern of mine -- I'm a good weight for either 5'4" or 5'5", but I still wonder. Does anyone know for sure?

  • The one Inch difference can be for any number of reasons. But and I hate to say this your husband is right. it should be at the 5'5" height that should still be with in the same weight range. as for 5'5' as 5'4".
