Hungry
I've done low cal (high carb low fat) dieting before and lost a lot of weight. I followed this for about a year and then started maintenance. The weight slowly crept back on and a few years later and I found myself having to diet again. It seemed hard to go back to counting so I decided to try the atkins plans, starting…

Sleep and weight
I have a conundrum. Burning the candle at both ends due to work and family commitments means I get just under 6 hr sleep on average. For me that doesn't feel like enough and I've read evidence that missed sleep is connected with weight gain due to the tiredness increasing hunger and poor food choices - I do feel hungry all…

Pilates DVD? Horse rider exercises?
I used to do pilates classes, I loved them and my flexibility improved dramatically. Then I moved and used a DVD instead because getting to a gym was not so easy. The DVD was 'The New Method Precision Pilates, sculpting an toning'. I did it a few times but for some reason although the exercises were pretty similar, somehow…

Body Recomp Group / Buddies
I've just hit my weightloss goal of having a BMI of 20 but although I have lost weight slowly, my %BF is still quite high at around 25% estimated by calipers which to me agrees with the bulges that I see in the mirror. I guess this is because my protein intake was pretty low and my exercise is all cardio based. So the plan…

Home lifters...
Just curious.., a) What gear do you have? b) Which room do you use? c) How do you store it? Is it out all the time? d) What would you like to have that you don't already? a) I've just started lifting so I have a very modest kit of a bench, adjustable dumbbells that go up to 10 kg each and then some fixed weight 9kg and…

Newbie lifting advice
Last night I started lifting. I used to do body pump about 10 years ago and thought I'd be straight back at it. I only have dumbbells though (at home) so have had to modify a bit. Anyhow...it was hard!!! To keep good form, I had to take the weights down to 5kg per dumbbell for squats and even lower for some upper body…

Body fat percentage - calipers
I decided to have a go at calculating my body fat percentage using calipers and the calculators on this website... http://www.linear-software.com/online.html There are instructional videos and all went well until I looked at the results of 6 different methods (rounded up to whole number)... 1. Jackson Pollock#7: 20 2.…

I want to suceed this time!
Hello super maintainers! Apologies for a long post...skip down if too much. In 2013 I lost 39lb going from a BMI of 26.5 to 20. I was so pleased that I'd surpassed the BMI of 23 (where I normally was before pregnancy and post baby binging) that I thought was my limit. It was easy to get there and I did it slowly over about…

Weight training for bone density increase
Just wondered whether anyone has looked into weight training for the purpose of maintaining bone density. Can you point me in the right direction for info? I was wondering whether you need to actually bulk muscle and gain weight or is it just the act of lifting? Has anyone tried it and had bone density measured...did it…

5:2 'diet' for maintaining?
I'm at my target weight which I achieved by regular calorie counting. Over Christmas I gained back 5lb and now that I've at last lost them again, I'm wondering whether it's possible to switch to 5:2 for maintaining? That way, I'm thinking that I may not get big gains for a holiday season and then have to work on loss…

Getting the best out of a fitbit one
So Santa brought me a fitbit one and I've synced it up with my pc. Just wondered whether anyone has any tips to get the most from it? Like the best way to wear it? what exercise it works well with or doesn't - like does it work with cycling? Any quirks or surprising benefits? Did you find logging more or less accurate than…

Those last few pounds
Hello, hope it's OK posting in here but guessed that this is where all the people that could answer would hang out. I've got 6 more pounds to lose and I'll reach my goal weight of 140lb and a fairly arbitrary BMI of 20. It's all gone like clockwork until the last couple of weeks, losing on average 1lb a week. Now I'm stuck…

Which tdee is right?
Having just read a discussion on calorie intake, I was amazed at the number of calories people smaller than me said they could eat and lose weight. I always thought my allowance was low but then I haven't been exercising and thought it must be down to that. I had calculated my TDEE on fitness frog and it came up as 1640…

Dumbbell advice
I have been meaning for a long time to get my act together and start lifting heavy. I will have to do it at home but that's OK as I have had classes so hopefully wouldn't do anything too silly. So I need to get myself a range of dumbbells and have been offered some set weight ones. I don't want to have too many different…

Learning to drink water
I don't like water...yes I know it's odd but it hits my stomach and makes me feel sick. The only time I can drink it is if I'm really hot and thirsty, like when I'm working out. So is there anything I can do to make the water palatable without compromising on the effect of drinking water?

For ladies who worked to get low body fat...
Now I'm assuming that you got there by lifting but I'd also be interested to know if you didn't do that but just lost the weight. I'm most likely way off that stage yet with a BMI of 23.5 but I just wondered when (BMI may be the best indicator?) you decided that you no longer needed to lose weight but to start converting…

Weights at home... can it be done effectively?
Being a gym member is out of the question for me just now as I have to squeeze in exercise when I can and the travel to the gym would eat the time that I do have. So is it possible to get the same results at home? I have done lots of free weight classes in the past so I think I'd be OK with posture and technique though…

Feeling conflicted about eating all my calories
Firstly, my food diary is open so if anyone wants to take a look, feel free. I've been counting calories now for 11 days. The first day I ate fairly normally to get an idea of my base rate (although it was probably a better day because I was logging it  ) and then I started working to my goal the next day.…

good calorie counted recipe books
I have the Hairy Bikers diet recipe book which is really good for the recipes that I do but with a fussy family, I need more choice so I'm looking for something similar for more ideas. I love the fact that the Hairy Bikers one is written by (not so big any more) blokes who like their food so it's 'proper', filling food.…

Am I getting it the wrong way round?
Hello, I'm new to MFP and loving the control that I now have over my body. I'm just into the healthy bmi range but want to get down to a bmi of around 22. Having just read the newbie advice threads, I realise that I may have my approach the wrong way round. I tend to eat fairly low calories (400-600) before 5pm and then…
