Protein powder in hot milk?
Specifically, chocolate whey protein powder. Has anyone tried this? Is it good or nasty?

"...and was under her calorie goal" irks me. You too?
Just a minor rant. I'm sure it's been done to death, but I just wanted to say this. :-) This might seem strange, but am I the only one who isn't trying to eat -under- the calorie guideline every day? I know some people zigzag with their calories and other people are trying to gain or maintain weight, but even many of the…

Hydration questions for all you smart pals
Hey, guys! I was starting to research this myself, but there are a lot of bogus "articles" out there and I'm finding myself tripping over a lot of outdated or biased junk. I was hoping that some of you smart cookies have already looked into this and could share your insights with me. I have some questions about proper…

Post-vacation blues!
On Wednesday morning, I weighed in at 131.2 pounds. Yay! Then, I chose to stop logging for four days to enjoy my vacation. I ate lots and lots and lots of horrible, junky crap. Yum! On Sunday morning, I weighed in at 140.1 pounds. GAH! :noway: Mind you, I know I didn't gain 9 pounds of fat in four days. Right? RIGHT??? Of…

Creative folks: Please help me dress this burger!
I mixed up some very interesting turkey burgers today at the group home where I work. I'm not going to cook and serve them until tomorrow, but I was pleased by the little taste test patty I made. The thing is, they have this zingy asian taste to them, and I'm not sure what condiment to serve them with. The basic burger…

Heart Rate Questions
I have a heart rate monitor that I use to estimate my calorie burns. It's a good one with a chest strap (Polar FT4), but I know that it's still an imperfect (indirect) way to judge the calories I'm burning. Since I can't exercise every day in a metabolic chamber or hooked up to a V02 hose, though, it's the best tool I've…

When no nutritional info is available...
I love going to the local farmer's markets and I want to support my hometown businesses (bakeries, restaurants, etc.), but I find it frustrating when they don't have any data available for stuff like breads, jams, sauces, and such. I don't know about you guys, but I HATE guessing. Maybe I'm a little neurotic -- I'd believe…

So Close!
My weekly weigh-in is tomorrow. Wish me luck! :-)

TO ALL BICYCLE-RIDERS (Story w/ pics)
***[Length Warning -- but please read this anyway if you have time!]*** My helmet may well have saved my life yesterday. Sorry for the annoying all-caps subject line and the frickin long post, but this is really important. I'm sure for most people (especially serious cyclists) that this is preaching to the choir, and I'm…

Tasty Dip
[30g nonfat greek yogurt] + [1 Tablespoon cranberry honey mustard] = tasty dip for cucumber spears. Tastes pretty darn good! I'm going to try it with other mustards and sauces. Since I'm sure that others have thought of this, too, I'll ask: Anyone else have great ideas for this? I love cucumbers because they're cool,…

One Year Later (Before & After Pics)
I've posted progress pics before, but I was looking at these pictures and I just wanted to share! Here's me last year, on June 20th 2010: ...and here's me today on a hike to the bottom of Salmon River Falls in upstate NY: I'm not even cringing at the belly flab. When you look at that comparison... wow. Proud of myself!…

Cooking / Portion Sizes NSV!
It's just my partner and me at home, and before we started getting serious about healthy eating and exercising, we generally just ate as much as we cooked. Since many convenience foods are made to feed families, not couples, this was a problem. Box of Rice-a-Roni supposed to feed 5 people? Oh well, we'd split it in two.…

Craving a candy bar? Try these!!!
All the deliciousness of a candy bar without all the high fructose corn syrup, "nougat," or crappy and cheap milk chocolate. I'm certain I can't be the first person to post about these: ...but DAMN are they worth another post! I swear I don't work for the company or anything, but I just bought these to try them and they…

Weight-lifting Questions (please advise!)
I've been trying to start a weight lifting regimen at home, since I can't afford a gym membership or personal trainer right now. I have free weights in a variety of sizes, a bunch of websites that show me proper form, and a friend to help spot me. After a false start a couple of weeks ago (I came down with a cold and…

Time between strength training (newbie question)
So I've been getting into running lately and doing pretty good with that, but I know that strength training is the way to go for building muscle, strengthening bones, improving body composition, etc. I started last Friday by following instructions and video clips that I found online. I was using hand-held free weights and…

Running Question - Please Help?
I was really looking forward to my early morning run this morning. I'm very new to running, but it's been rewarding so far and it gives me goals to focus on other than weight loss. Even though I felt good when I got up and walked down to the track, my energy bottomed out wicked bad once I got started. I was hoping to run a…

Help me celebrate! 30 lbs gone! (pics)
So far this year, I've lost 30 pounds! :-D Here's me last Christmas (on the right, in the pink shirt): And here's me last Friday: w00t!!!

I feel like a champ!
I've been alternating between bicycling, walking, and doing some short jogging intervals for exercise over the past month or so and the weight loss has been great, but I wasn't sure if I was making a lot of progress in the fitness department. So, yesterday, I was at this local park that has a walking trail with distance…

Can someone explain this, please?
How can it be that I have 78 calories left for the day, but my Protein, Fat, and Carbs are all at 0? I thought the numbers of grams for those were calculated as percents of your entire calories for the day, and that the calorie density of those nutrients are known. I figured that if you ate all your protein, fat, and…

Quinoa Breakfast Skillet
Just came up with this and it's delicious! 2 large whole eggs 2 large egg whites 4 Tbsp salsa 4 links Jones All-Natural Turkey Sausage, thawed and sliced into rounds 100g cooked quinoa 1/4 cup shredded cheese (I used swiss) Beat the eggs and egg whites together. Pour them into a frying pan or skillet on medium-low heat and…

Macronutrient Ratios
What do you have your Carbs / Fat / Protein percents set to and why? Over the past few weeks, I've been messing around with the ratios, trying to figure out what works for me, but I'd like some more information. I know people have different philosophies about this, and I'd like to hear some of the pros and cons of…

When you have 200-300 cals left...
...at the end of the day, what do YOU do? I usually try to eat back my exercise calories and stay within 100 calories above or below my goal, but I exercised a lot more today than usual (mostly excitement over my new HRM and accidental overcompensation for the tiramisu I ate this morning). I didn't really expect to have…

HRM and Calories Burned
Okay, I know this kind of thing gets discussed pretty often here, and I know people have differing opinions on whether HRMs calculate calories burned accurately or not. I thought the numbers my new Polar FT4 gave me today seemed surprisingly high, but... what the heck. I want to use them. (Though I did adjust the total by…

Salt in MFP Database
I'm a little confused. A "dash" of salt is about 1/8 tsp, right? But when I use the MFP's standard "Spices, salt, table" entry to add "1 dash" it adds 155 mg of sodium. If instead I enter a quantity of 0.13 in "1 teaspoon" it adds 302 mg sodium. WTH? Am I doing something wrong, here? (EDIT: Other websites say that a scant…

What's My Activity Level?
Okay, I'd like some help figuring out what my activity level should probably be described as. Not counting the exercise that I log, here's my life: I work four days a week (about 34 hours), and while I'm at work I tend to keep pretty busy. I'm on my feet a lot because I work at a group home, so I have to cook, clean, help…

Help me with Popcorn ideas
I like to eat air-popped popcorn as a snack. It's fairly low calorie, whole grain, and you get to munch and crunch for quite a while on it. Even though I do like it just plain, sometimes I want to put a little seasoning on it (black pepper is particularly delicious, maybe a teensy bit of salt). The problem is, nothing…

Weighing Produce
When weighing fruits and vegetables, do you weigh just the edible part, or do you weigh the whole fruit, including a core, pit, etc.? I've looked around for the answer, but I'm not sure if the calorie information given is for an entire fruit or just the part you're going to eat. Also, on a side note, who decided what a…

What if you eat way too much?
Hey, everyone. New to the site and I had a question. I work at a group home for the developmentally disabled. As a staff member, I help the residents prepare food and go through their daily activities. Well, Tuesday was one guy's birthday, and we went all out with home-made pizza, cake, and ice cream. I totally had a plan…
