Well, I was spending Valentine day afternoon doing what all of us sweet old gals where doing I expect. Watching a particularly grisly movie and wondering how the makers created such believable effects when the phone rang and I've been in a state of apprehension ever since. It was my very old friend Ellen who now lives in the home for those with memory loss. I could tell from the way she was pausing in speech that her eldest son was with her and prompting her. The long and the short, I've been invited to go to a Chinese buffet restaurant next Sunday with her, her son, and George who came to live in my basement for a month whilst he sorted himself out and ended up staying 5 years. I can never get Ellen on the phone because she is always missing doing "activities" and I guess this is a ploy to get her out of the home for an hour to maybe stir her poor grey cells. I would rather the two young 57 year olds had picked me up for a visit to her nursing home! To be honest I hate Chinese buffets, all those people breathing on and fighting over the food. (Flu germs as mentioned earlier, horrors!) Ellen doesn't say much anymore so will I be expected to take part in a scintillating conversation with two 57 year old chaps I hardly know these days? What on earth do I wear since my social life pretty much consists of grubbing in the geraniums! I know you will all say "go and enjoy" but it won't be as easy as dining out with my two boys and grands and DILs. With them I can exchange numerous, humorous insults resulting in much laughter but I can't with Jim and George! Will one of them grab my arm protectively if I totter on the ice like Mike does, will they WANT to. Oh dear, the best approach I guess is to go and enjoy and savour the moment, but I'd still rather spend Sunday watching a particularly grisly movie!
Anne, the ungrateful one!

..the ungrateful fussy dogs didn't want to walk in the rain...Brandy walked to the end of the block then refused to go any farther and wanted to go home...Sasha walked out the door, went around the house and back to the door, so I left them in the house and walked without them. I walked for an hour and got pretty wet but by 6:30 AM had almost 9,000 steps.0

Happy Monday! Off today because of presidents day. I am washing clothes and my cleaning girl comes this afternoon. I got up earlier than I wanted so I would be tired tonight and go to bed early. Silly, but it is hard for me to fall asleep so I have to allow an extra half hour to 45 minutes to get to sleep. Diane sent me a picture of Himalayan Natural Crystal Lamp which is supposed to help you sleep and with breathing and coughing. I am tempted to buy one but for now put it on my wish list on Amazon.
Jackie, here is a link for presidents day but in reality it is celebrating the birthdays of our presidents especially Washington.
timeanddate.com/holidays/us/washington-birthday
Barbie, Daisy does not like the rain either but she loves snow. Congratulations to your friends, there is hope for all of us!!
Anne, yes I say go for it!! You will make your friend feel special even if she can't express herself. Think of yourself as a cougar for one luncheon.
Marie, I honestly don't know if it helps anything. I saw it on Facebook and thought of Buzz and if she thought it might be helpful. Worth a try I would think.
Patsy, you seem to love people and parties, what a great attitude you have. Isn't every dog in charge of their owner????
Lin, you do keep yourself busy, I hope today will be more relaxing.
Marcella, my grandson was busy all weekend with his "new" family so haven't found out yet how it went for him. I do know he was feeling a little disconnected before the weekend so I hope it went well.
Shirley, what an adorable picture of Issac, best Valentine ever.
Phoebe, I am taking Robitussin for coughs and it seems to be helping. I sleep with a diffuser with essential oils which sort of works like a humidifier. I think I do have one though, maybe I will pull it out. Thanks for the advice.
Guess I better get in the shower so I at least have some clothes on before my cleaning girl gets here. Have a good day.
Sandy

Anne ~ Ellen won't mind what you have on because you've been good friends for such a long time so in such circumstances I'd recommend you wear whatever you're most comfortable in and if that's grubby gardening clothes so be it. So long as you don't worry about an ulterior motive, although goodness know what that could be, then I'd say take up that "go and enjoy" attitude so you can see for yourself what's happened to Ellen in the time you haven't been able to make contact but more importantly feign a dodgy tummy and avoid that food!! If there's a risk of ice grab an arm whether it's offered or not then they'll hopefully remember their manners. Any help? Probably not!
Sandy ~ One of my friends I regularly swim with used to get bad leg cramps after a short time in the pool until tonic water was recommended and now she drinks a glass the night before we meet and the problem seems to have gone. I have suggested she add some gin and a slice of lemon!!
Barbie ~ I'd say dogs know best but am guessing those frisky poodles will never stop your daily walking!!
I've been out to the local post office and will now settle in front of the fire with a cup of tea and naughty chocolate chip biscuit...... Sandy you have my permission to remind me on Friday why my weight hasn't gone down!!

Sandy, I read a fun novel at bedtime to help me fall asleep....the story I'm reading gets my mind off my own life....and if I don't fall asleep for a long time, then I have a wonderful time reading.0

Cougar!!!! Me! I think not SANDY, lol. More like a plump little bunny! If not so pretty! Mark and Mary Jo popped in a moment ago and like you JACKIE they say dodge the dodgy food where the masses will be gathered and go for the plain rice and grilled fish etc. Will do. Mary Jo, who can be tantalizing at times, when I asked how grandson Derek was, said as she made a quick getaway in the car, "ah that's news for another day". More stuff to think and wonder about. I hate having an active imagination at times!0

I read my meditation books and watch one episode of Cheers but still there are nights I toss and turn. I feel I need 7 hours of sleep but happy if I get over 6 1/2. Funny on the days I don't have him I still only get 6-7 hours so my body has adjusted. lol

Happy Family Day here in Canada. Some people get off work but since we are retired every day is a holiday.
I had some sad news this morning, I was at Yoga class and got a call that my cousen Mark passed away last night. He has been battling cancer for 5 years now. So just waiting for the details now.
I am so glad we are still home and not on our vacation.
We are also in for a snow storm heading our way. It will all depend on what direction it takes.
I hope everyone had a great valentine's day.

Good afternoon friends
Busy working day for me in the house. I am cleaning everything and sweating like crazy. I still have my bedroom and sewing room to do. I am really scrubbing woodwork, cabinets, cleaning shelves etc.
We are having an appraiser come out and appraise the house. They say the market is up.
Hubby putting together new traeger bbq.
Have a great day.

SANDY, did you post that Restless Leg Syndrome thing from Prevention and Dr Lyons or was it an advertisement? Thank you for thinking of me, luv! I could write a book about RLS, and quinine water has nothing to do with relieving the "ants in my bones" symptoms, and they are not muscle contractions, but brain messages from a dopaminic area where a particular form of iron and also dopamine are lacking and they are working on research, but there is no definitive answer yet! I stopped reading Prevention years ago due to all the false information they print! If anyone wants the most current information on this miserable problem, go to the most reliable source, <www.rls.org> ! I have lived with it for at least 68 years, and followed every available "source" of information and this site is the only believable one...and though there is no answer yet, it is giving reliable helpful information! Quinine works for cramps, which is a very different problem, and actually is no longer available in pure form due to danger in using it!
JACKIE, love your additions of gin and lemon to the mixture!
ANNE, my sympathy with your upcoming meeting. It's not a simple matter, and your friend will not remember it, probably. Could you feign being unavailable that day? Or just be the friend from the past and go along with it!. Make sure the food is well cooked!!!
MARIE, thanks for the compliment! was fortunate to inherit my Mother's hair, which had great body until the day she passed on! And as for the remedy for leg cramps, I sort of answered your question above! Ask your Doctor if you have cramps (could be low potassium) or Restless Leg Syndrome, and proceed from there! Or go to www.rls.org to read up on RLS.
Cramps can be debilitating! I have them once in awhile, and have been told to put weight on that leg by standing on it, but it's usually too painful to straighten out! I massage and grin and bear it until it's gone; THEN I bear down on it while standing! If you are on a water pill, just make sure your potassium isn't leaching out! (Darn, I can't think of the name for water pills! ) But I have read things in Prevention that are very misleading. They make lots of money selling published material!
BARBIE, I always said poodles are really smart people in disguise! But then, you DID get 9000 steps while they lolled about!
SHIRLEY, sad about your cousin Mark, and I hope his 5 years of living with that condition had some pleasant associations! We still have such a long way to go!
SANDY, I wonder if our bodies simply get what sleep they require! There are nights I get only a few hours, and then others when I awaken still tired after 8 hours! When I wake in the middle of the night and can't sleep any longer, I open a Sudoku book and work on it until either the book or my pencil keep dropping to the floor, at which point I can return to sleep! It's hardly scientific, but it works for me!
I feel tied to my computer lately, with all the work I have to do on all the sites associated with getting records and business together while snail mail seems a thing of the past! Some of them tell me, as I register, my address is invalid, and I wonder what they know that I do not!
I do feel like a dinosaur more often than not!
3:16 PM, too late for lunch?

Hope the picture isn't a whopper. That's my pj's/gown. and my feet in slipper socks.
Anne, I'm glad your friends family members are doing something for their Mom. Bless them for trying, even if it is not the best of planning. I can make a meal from egg drop soup and hot tea. If there isn't much to talk about, it isn't to do with you. The boys are going thru stages of grief and they may see what happens and realize it wasn't a good idea. So, you will see your friend and I hope she will be having a good day.
Lin, hope you've had a good day.
Sandy, feel better.
Marie, I could eat with you!
Jackie, Dolly is a bit better today, so she may just be very sore. She's enjoying being spoiled.
Shirley, sorry about your cousin, five years is such a long time. And it's all so exhausting.
Chris, Where do you get your energy???
Will you be willing to move again?
Barbie, I got a good laugh about your dogs on strike! What a sight it made in my mind. Still smiling
Buzz, hope you had a good lunch!
BTW, is tonic water the same as club soda? I've never noticed.
Have a good night. Phoebe0 -
Just watched X-Files and am looking forward to Castle a little bit later. I don’t normally watch award shows so am passing on the music award show this evening. I hope I can stay awake for all of Castle.
Patsy, I am glad you had a nice Valentine’s Day. It was a strange day today. The library was closed but all the staff was there having an in-service day. I dropped off my books in the outside drop and they processed the returns! Why would they do that? No mail today, but the little mail trucks were zipping around, apparently delivering packages. Odd. But the banks were closed and several where I have accounts were using the day closed for taking things off-line. Three-day maintenance window.
Jackie, nothing like being shamed by a groomer as you are enjoying your day. For goodness sakes. Can’t people let things alone? Poor Jasper, still traumatized after so many years. Very kind and wise of you to limit frightening episodes. I hope you enjoyed your soup. I am working on my leftover soup as well. I have enough for a couple more days.
Anne, what a confusing invitation. I agree that it is likely your friend will not remember this lunch and I do not understand the motivation of this invitation. If you can, just wear whatever makes you happy, be extremely wary about the food especially since you have some food issues. I guess I would not be above calling back and cancelling. But I am kind of a mouse about a lot of things and I might actually be so stressed out that I would be sick. Otherwise, is there someone you can hijack to go with you? A friend or relative you are comfortable with who can help shield you in this situation?
Sandy, interesting post regarding tonic water. I tried that when I was having nightly leg cramps. For me, it was worthless and I read later it actually could be harmful. Who knows what to believe right? Busy trying to get things accomplished with your no-babysitting day. I got one load of laundry done today but need to do another one. I am going to have to wash my bedding. The finger I cut bled all over as I moved around in bed. I’ll get around to it one of these days but I won’t be home tomorrow.
Barbie, I am sorry your dogs are fussy but you always overcome the obstacles to achieve your goals. Good for you. I also read when I couldn’t sleep but fell asleep on my books with the light on so now I find a program to stream that I really want to watch, I immediately fall asleep! It is so nice your friends found each other. I wish them well. Meanwhile, I am no longer looking for a happily ever after. I don’t think it exists for me. Well, except my happily ever after may well be living alone as it definitely makes me happier than a bad relationship. Ha.
Marie, I hope you had a good day. Are you still having lovely weather? And are you cooking in your IP every day? I hope you had a good Valentine’s Day.
Shirley, sorry about the loss in your family. Will you be attending a service?
Chris, oh my goodness, you are a whirling dervish of cleaning! I admire you. Now, you’re having the appraiser over with an eye to sell your home?
Buzz, it is never too late for lunch! Gathering information these days should require less effort but it seemingly is more difficult.
Phoebe, I like your nightwear! Cute kitties. And it is nice to hear Dolly is doing a bit better today. And are you feeling better? And DH? By the way, the gentleman I told you about who was going to driving school ended up in a horrible situation almost unimaginable. Seven day weeks, standing out in the cold for hours on end with no breaks. No food provided (which they weren't told about in advance). Etc., etc. Anyway, his back has already gone bad again and he did not go to class. Their medical people just tossed him out of the program (he should be on his way back here tomorrow) and as far as I can see, that is wonderful. I wonder how you can find a reputable employer/learning program. Anyway, he's got to get his back better once again.
Jeri, when do you leave for Florida?
I am looking forward to tomorrow. I am meeting a friend and we have several places we want to visit---a tearoom/bakery, a new natural food store, and then off to a movie. So in preparation, I cleaned and cut up a bunch of vegetables again so I have something appropriate to eat. (And no, I did not add to my hacked up fingers today.)
Today, was a blur of one thing after another and I would bore you to death if I made a list but the highlights included a trip to Trader Joe’s for a nice load of fresh vegetable. And an all day long texting with a friend who is very upset. I don’t know if I was helpful but at least he could say whatever he wanted to. Oh and did some other cooking and watched a webinar on old crop/new crop marketing, farm program, crop insurance.
Thinking of you. Sending hugs.

Ok, I did almost 10,000 steps cleaning Today. One more room to straighten up and ash all the throw rugs Tomorrow.
Yes we are thinking of moving to maybe a 55 and older place. Or not. Anyway we will put the house up for sale in April again. We will see what hapoens.
By the way my house was clean but I wanted it to shine for the appraisal.
Happiness to all
Chris0 -
Lin, I often fall asleep with the light on and the book on my tummy...sometimes it slides off and disturbs Bernie, the cat
Chris, we moved to a 55+ park four years ago and love it.....moving is the best way (as you probably know from your last move) to get rid of a lot of things you don't need or want anymore.
Sandy, Jake drinks tonic water and keeps a bar of soap in a sock under the covers and together they have kept him from having leg cramps that used to wake him up and hurt so much.0 -
A happy belated Valentines Day to everyone. It sounds like you all managed to have an enjoyable day one way or another. Rather quiet here that day though we did get a Valentine bleep on f/b from both of our kids. I made up some salmon with some asparagus, which pleased us both. Jeri we have you beat. We have been married 45 yrs now. Learned long ago if I wanted something for "the day" I just would pick it up, so we have been enjoying a beautiful bouquet of pink, white and purple tulips. Still trying to get rid of the extra calories from my Xmas chocolate.
Jeri.... Love your photo. I recall so much those winter days bundled up in my warmest jacket, mittens, hat and winter boots dealing with the frequent winds that are so common in your area. And yes friends....I too have lived in temps with -22C.....brrrrr Picture myself walking down that snowy path with my winter boots going crunch, crunch, crunch.
Sandi , Phoebe and others not feeling up to par.....I am hoping you are all starting to feel better soon. These deep coughs are no fun; one has to be so careful they don't go into pneumonia. I used to get sick with the flu shots as a kid, but don't seem to now. I am more concerned about having some protection so as to avoid the dreaded "pneumonia".
Just so you know some nice weather should be headed your way soon. We have had temps in the 70s for about 6 days now. Today it was 76...absolutely beautiful and I had a big case of spring fever. My dh and dog joined me in a 2 mile walk around our neighborhood. Trying very hard to get back into this exercise thing. It just keeps going up and up and no matter how careful I am at what I am eating the scale isn't my friend these days. Blame it on my thyroid issues and rx adjusting again. Rain due on Wednesday for several days and snow in the mtns. We need it !
Have been laughing right along with all of you with the pj situations and other things. Thanks for cheering me up.
And yes I am still looking after our 5 yr old granddaughter, but what was 3 days a week is likely soon going to be 4 days a week (11 hr days minus 3 hrs in transitional kindergarden). Our sil is going after a promotion. We have one very active child, so I am pooped at the end of the day. Made it clear we will be doing this until school is out and then they have to find a nanny. We are so ready to get back on the road with our rv. We are getting too old for this...LOL and want some adventure in our life again.
Chris.....You will not regret making that move to a 55+ community. It will be 2 yrs in May and we are so glad that we did it. Finding the right size for you is what is important. We didn't want a large place, but then we didn't want a place real small either. Hopefully you will be able to find one easily that will be perfect for you.
Got some family news today. My 97 yr old aunt passed away today. She was such a delightful lady and had a wonderful life. She definitely will be missed.
Well it is getting late and our granddaughter arrives early tomorrow am. My thoughts are with all of you though I may not have mentioned you all individually. Good night...

Late at night again...I am an night owl! I have been gradually adding time on my recombinant bike. It is so helpful for my knees and hips. I can't spent as much time walking as I would like. So this "sort of" takes the place of a that nice long walk.
We are checking out the movie about Steve Jobs. That should be interesting. A friend is writing a young adult book that I am to review. I am nervous about that. Honestly, I fear there might be a real difference of opinion on this. I was asked...I didn't volunteer. But I will be honest and gentle if need be. I am enjoying the PBS series about finding your roots. Actually they trace the roots of several famous people each program.
I would be happy as a clam to move to a smaller place in an adult neighborhood. BUT that is never going to happen. John loves his shop and garage. He has always lived in the country. He loves having a bit of space between our house and the neighbors. We will make decisions as life makes demands.
MoMo went to the vet today. She is okay for a 13 year old sweetheart. Old dogs are so endearingly sweet. All the vet techs and the vet are so gentle and caring of her. She never minds going to see the vet. We will do what we can to see that she is pain free and in as good health as possible.
Anne: we have a really good friend that is a very talented classical musician. He has played in the symphony for years. He is suffering from dementia. We have a regular lunch date with him and his wife. It is good for him to get out and have social contact. It is pretty easy really. Some days he knows us and some he doesn't. We go with whatever he is feeling. We talk about small things and he sort of responds. It is often a sweet afternoon with a dear old friend. I never regret the time we spend with him.

Thanks for the advice friends, all of it very good. The home my friend is in does provide lunch for visitors at a small cost, and I would have much preferred to have done that, however her son and his friend want to take her out, so we shall see. I suppose a huge Chinese buffet place with a bustling crowd will prevent much conversation that's for sure when I think about it! A thought I have, maybe Ellen's son merely wants to observe how she will react in a less familiar place, or how she compares to me in conversation. We are the same age. A thought PATSY, is your old friend in a home or is he still well enough to be at home with his wife? I too want to keep in touch with Ellen, it's the Chinese buffet that has me cringing.
I have mixed feelings about 55+ communities, not that I could afford one anyway. One aspect of being close to folks of my own generation appeals, but then I love my little house so much and I love to meet up with the young mothers and their little ones on my walks. I also love seeing my kids on quite a regular basis for shopping help in the winter. Would I see so much of them if I lived in a sheltered community? It doesn't help that I'm a bit of a "loner" and not into group activities. Different strokes for different folks again. As I said, it can't apply to me, but it's nice to know many of you love the life and have no regrets. Who knows maybe I'll be all for one if I win the lottery!
Well, we have JERI's winter wonderland outside without the mountains, just beautiful! A good deal warmer as well! Grandson Derek came over later with Mark to repair my garage door which had warped in the intense cold last week and wouldn't close anymore the sneck being out of line. I'd forgotten about "family day" with being long retired so that was a lovely surprise seeing them ALL at varying times, even though I was caught in my work clothes vacuuming, washing and ironing! At least they know I still do it! Lol.
Bye for now and thanks again, Anne.0 -
Marie - Your black eyed peas, yesterday, sounded so wonderful that I may have to fix some of my own now.
Anne - Hope your luncheon goes well. I’m guessing Jim and George are hoping this will help your friend’s memory to see an old friend. They are probably having their own difficulty coming to terms with what is happening with her. Hopefully, she will be having a good day and your company will be a blessing to all of them and there’s a blessing to you.
Chris - Good luck with selling your house. I would love to downsize from our home. Will probably do something in a few years. My husband is more of a city boy and likes being closer to his work. After he retires, I’m hoping that we will be able to move a bit further out. I would love to have a place with a few acres of land and a nice cottage. It would be less to take care of, I could do more gardening and I would love to not have to worry about Homeowner Association Groups.
Guess I’m off to get more office work done now.

Dear friend,
Thank you all for the info on 55+ community. My husband thinks it's a thing to look at. I am not sure yet. We have downsized so much before that we wouldn't have to do that again. We have no storage here so I haven't bought things to fill the house up. Actually it's a little eempty.lol
This morning took a neighbor boy to school, he goes to a private school not close by. We will pick him up later Too. His mother just had surgery and we have been helping her out. His dad passed away years ago.
Have to clean my closet out today. Then lunch with friends. I am going to the laundromat with throw rugs this afternoon Then cleaning done.
Did I tell you my son has lost 60 lbs now. He is so happy.
Have a happy Day.
Chris
Ps. Everyone sounds like they are so busy, enjoy every minute.0 -
Great news everyone! Daffodils are everywhere! Yea! Spring is here. I couldn't believe it...overnight these sweet yellow blooms showed up to say "hello, everyone! It's springtime!"
Off to Costco today for fresh veggies and fruit. I saw a bunch of lovely orchids in nice ceramic pots but my Valentine bouquet is still in full flower and is taking up the whole dining room table. I am trying to be reasonable, not easy for me. I am fixing John an egg while omelette for dinner. He loves them even with lots of veggies. I try to introduce items in our menu that looks like it could have a lot of meat but doesn't. I used to do this with my veggie hating son. Oh the things we do to try to be healthy. John is the one who encourages me about exercise. "Get on your bike, baby and ride! Ride! Ride to Disneyland." Okay, maybe not Disneyland but somewhere fun.
MoMo loves to have an audience as she eats. Then she rolls over for a tummy pet and a big wiggle! Morning tradition. I love it.

Wow, Chris 60 pounds for your son is fabulous it seems a pipe dream to me now. I got on the scale and it was at least the same as yesterday. Oh well, keep on battling as I say.
Moving again? I can't believe when I read you were thinking of it. I guess no grass grows under your
feet. Good luck with everything.
I have still not heard anything about funeral arrangements and I don't want to be a pest and call again.
I will wait until tomorrow unless I hear first. I have this week to pack for our trip and Sunday is our family dinner with Kristina and John's birthday being two days later. We are all getting together for a dinner up in Toronto.
Well we got that blizzard they were predicting and Dave has cleaned the driveway twice. Yoga is
cancelled tonight, I wasn't going anyway, and my choir is cancelled tonight. I plan on venturing out
soon to pick up some groceries to get us through this week and weekend.
Stay safe and warm and Sandy and Phoebe hope you are both feeling better.

Just checking in for now. Leaving soon to get Honey from her spa treatment.
Diane, you and Sandy are wearing me out! Glad it is spring on the west coast.
Lin, there are lots of reputable places for your friend. I have my doubts about his choice of career when he has back issues. It is not the kind of sit down job that makes you feel better. Then there are basic things that must be done, usually daily, and he will not thank his sore back when he is doing them. The industry is in need of drivers and your friend should sit back and consider all offers thoroughly.
Have a good day, time to go

Hello All,
Stopping for a cup of herbal tea and a rest. I've been packing up my suitcase getting ready as we have to get up at about 3 am. I think we must be at the airport at about 4:30 am. Way too early for me.
I'm not sure what we will be up to as we are staying with good friends. We won't be renting a car so will be dependent on them. Hope that goes well.
Must run, have a wonderful day.
