    Good afternoon.

Phoebe, yes it was the M.C. Beaton book I was reading. All finished and moving on to a 500+ page Elizabeth George book---A Banquet of Consequences. I hope I make it through before it needs to be returned to the library. I do like the Lynley character so I will give it a shot. I hope you have a safe trip and that the weather is good.

Marie, how lovely to get more sleep. I get up a lot. I haven’t been able to sleep through the night for so many decades I don’t remember what it’s like to sleep through the night. A refund is a very nice surprise. Wahoo!

Buzz, yes, I think I mentioned being divorced but we always have so much to say here on this thread who knows. So I met my ex in college when I was 19, we were engaged a year later and married at 21 a few days after I graduated. Lots of history and I’ve been thinking of it lately as a friend of mine at church has asked me to bring some pictures of my ex as she never met him. So yes, I was married a few days shy of 25 years. No children. Looking at pictures of the two of us when we were in our teens and twenties is putting me in a wistful frame of mind.

Patsy, I do my best to avoid politics. Thank God for PBS, streaming and mystery books! But I did not see the special on Shirley Temple. As I was washing and chopping fresh vegetables (again today), I watched a DVD I’d borrowed from the library. It was a 4-part BBC special----Fleming: The Man Who Would be Bond. I enjoyed it.

Jackie, ha, love your theory that we destroyed Mars. Entirely possible! We are excellent at destruction. I have enjoyed the Lunn bunn discussion. Back to horses. My ex-father-in-law raised draft horses and would use them to do a bit of the farming each year, cut hay, to pull hay wagons, cultivate crops, and of course drove them in parades. He enjoyed them but I believe it was an expensive hobby but no more expensive than his Harley Davidson motorcycles. The man knew how to acquire hobbies. Back to your post--lovely video. My gosh those doggies can run! Well, I see George likes the shorter runs once in a while? Independent thinker! What are the treats in the little baggie?

Anne, the weather was so warm today that we are down to the last bits of snow! I do not like politics. I do not find inspiring leaders these days. I bemoan the loss of many of our old traditional ways of my youth. One part of the service I like each Sunday at my church is that at the beginning of the service, we sing some type of patriotic song (such as God Bless America) and then say the pledge of allegiance before moving on to prayer and scripture. And really???? SIZE SIX???? My feet are gunboats in comparison! Wow.

Jeri, phenomenal photos once again. So happy to hear you are enjoying your vacation.

Sandy, enjoy the celebration(s) with Bryanna. Time does fly doesn’t it!

Shirley, enjoy the birthday celebration with your daughter and Isaac. I hope your cold starts to clear up quickly. Sorry that you missed seeing your sister at the funeral last night.

    Marcella, did you find shoes?

    Hugs!! Tomorrow is Sunday-Church-Always Behind-Day.

Loved the antique sewing machine and the beautiful writing on the receipt. Made me think of the beautiful writing that was on the birth certificate that I received on my grandmother from London. .....of course. LOL

So envious Jackie of where you can take George to run. My dog would be in heaven having all of that room to run. Just maybe he would bring back a ball to me when I throw it. As often as I have tried he won't go after one, but he loves to run when you play with him. Thanks for sharing the video with us.

Now Anne....now that you have been talking about this homemade Raisin Nut Bread you have me drooling for some and I haven't made bread since about 1976. However my new KitchenAid mixer has a dough hook, so I just might have to try it out. First I have to find me a recipe. Made some Banana Nut Bread with chocolate chips in it last week and it turned out great ! Much better than my first try at it. So I can't eat cookies anymore. (I can't have them around because I have no resistance to them. Still am paying for my Christmas cookies baking. :) ) Still think I can make nut bread occasionally and homemade bread would be a real treat only. Only wish I got this mixer earlier in life.

Speaking of treats and I am not sure whether they are English or not, but I suspect so. Petite Fours....to die for. We ate them on the periodic Sundays when we had tea with my English grandmother. There was only one bakery that made them soooo good. Never have found them like this since.

We received something in the mail that we saw advertised on tv last week. It was produced by TimeLife and it was 8 cds of music from the 1950s to the 1970s, A bit costly but we knew we would really enjoy them and play them often, so we got them. The old 33s and 45s are long gone as is the player. At least we can still enjoy them. Funny how so many others our ages are listening to their period of music too.

And Sandy....We did move into a Del Webb community a couple of yrs ago, which was built in 1998. Fancy enough for us though not near as nice as the new ones they build these days. We have delightful neighbors, great homes and fun activities available to us should we decide to partake in them. We do have fences on our side of the street, but the houses across the street back up to the golf course. Just enough room for our small dog in back, but he spends most of his time inside anyway unless we take him out on one of our daily walks. Some days I miss our large backyard, but I do not miss all of the work involved. Much rather do what I really prefer to do.

Well time to run get dinner started. Enjoy your weekend.

Diane, I believe the French claim petit fours. Another treat I will never eat again.......along with all the breads you ladies have been discussing!!!

Me too, I love the old music Diane.

Petit fours are French I guess, but that didn't stop us English making and mopping (eating) them up. What I REALLY, REALLY, REALLY would like though is a slice of battenburg cake! Mmm, mmm, a square of cake comprising 2 pink and 2 normal coloured cake squares joined together to form a bigger square and covered in almond paste. Oh boy! All this is making me think a short trip back to the old country might be a good idea!
Watched on the movie channel "The Martian" and nearly died of fright as the hero kept venturing out in his helmet and space suit. Aren't people brave, well some, not me!

SANDY, A very Happy Birthday to BRYANNA from Mike, Me, and all our MFP family!

What a wealth of photos today! Loved JACKIE's video but couldn't figure out how to close it! I love your theory about Mars; yours went further than my old one about our planet being inhabited by the escapees from Mars asylums!
JERI, what exciting pictures of ... was it a parrot?...Alligators (some visitors complain of never seeing them! And a glorious sunset!
ANNE, you are certainly expressing what I hear daily about the difference between today's "politicians" and "statesmen"! WHere have all the latter disappeared? Is it the "Media" bringing out the worst of the "performers"??? I am having a dreadful problem deciding how to vote when the choice seems to come down to who is the best candidate or who stands the best chance of winning for one's "party" !!! I've never had this dilemma before!
MARCELLA, I agree with you, and join in your Thank You!
PATSY, love, I don't even have to go near a bakery to add pounds just smelling the sweets! Is life fair?
SHIRLEY, it's all bound to help you feel better! We are sending white light and pure thoughts to help you heal!
Getting late again, and for some reason I remained awake all last night, so I will turn in earlier tonight and watch TV, which makes me drowsy most of the time!
Can I tell a story (a.k.a. a "joke") that struck me a so funny that I sent it on to my son, only by mistake, sent it to The NY TIMES instead, clicking on the wrong email to reply to!!! I will replace a word, repeated several times, that I think MFP will delete!
I was in a Starbucks Coffee recently when my stomach started rumbling and I realized that I desperately needed to "you know what". The place was packed, but the music was really loud so to get relief and reduce embarrassment I timed my "you know whats" to the beat of the music. After a couple of songs I started to feel much better. I finished my coffee and noticed that everyone was staring at me. I suddenly remembered that I was listening to my Ipod (with ear piece) - and how was your day?
For some reason, when I read it, I really broke up; does anyone else find it as funny as I did?
    Have a glorious weekend, y'all!

Oh what a day! We had sun...not too terribly warm but we did grab a sandwitch and head to the waterfront to watch the boats. Sandwiches are not great for containing the calorie intake so tonight will have to be modest fare.

Now about my insane fascination with politics...I can only explain it as lifelong exposure to dinner table strategy and family caucas discussion. I had three family members who were in politics. Not the big stuff, just county and state. I have licked more stamps and stuffed more envelopes than you will ever know. But the outcome has made me take it very seriously. Not that I know anything more than anyone else, we are first and second generation Americans and I guess that's why we are so interested. My grandmother called us lace curtain Irish. I don't think so...I never saw any lace curtains around.

Anne: I loved that movie "The Martian." The Steve Jobs movie is fascinating but incredibly oddly paced. The flashbacks and quirky nature of Jobs were very interesting. You might enjoy it since you are an iPad user. I am an iPad and apple computer user as well. The Intern was a delightful little film. I know you would love it.

Veggie soup tonight. No crackers or bread for me. John will have bread and a small piece of chicken as well. Red grapes for dessert.

Outrageous full moon. I didn't see the red ring around it warning of a storm but we are to have showers tomorrow. Have a peaceful day tomorrow. We will be chatting with our son, playing with sweet old MoMo.
    Patsy

  • Buzz, I've heard that joke somewhere, but I still laughed again!
Like Marie, I've slept a lot today. It feels good to let myself sleep, but here's hoping I can sleep well tonight. It feels like it has been Sunday and now Sunday is back again!
Jeri, beautiful photos, except for ol gator. A great photo all the same. That color looks great on you. I hope your foot is OK. I remember our trips to Florida during winter. It felt great. So relaxing.
    Happy birthday to Bryanna!

    Have a good night everyone.

I had a laugh at your joke BUZZ, and thanks for the movie tip PATSY. I will try and find it.
I've just heard on the news that Mr Trump has won S Carolina for the republicans and Hillary for the democrats. Fascinating stuff for an outsider and normally politics don't interest me much, but this campaign, from the little I know, seems extremely important for world politics, not just the USA.
And that's me done for the day, wasted far too much of your time yesterday!
Don't you all just love Sunday. So quiet and peaceful at 9:15!
    Anne.

  • On the road Again! Weather temps are rising across I 40, a sure sign of Spring.
Jackie I forgot to mention your video, I enjoyed it, love Scruff's little spins. George does not seem amused though. Love that they come back to you right away.
Shirley, good news about your cold getting better. I'd wear a mask on the plane, so you don't catch anything on there.
The loss of appetite diet- 21 pounds down. No, I'm not concerned. I'm eating, small but nutritious. Less so on the road, but that's to be expected.
    Time for my nap!!

I recently finished dog sitting Scruff while my friend met some friends for lunch and who would guess just how time consuming a funny little dog could be. She was feeling a bit clingy, especially when Jasper the cat decided to hijack her bed and I've had a text message now she's back home telling me she's slept since getting back. George on the other hand just viewed some Meerkats on the tv and, deciding they must be in the garden rushed outside to see them off.... very funny!! The dogs have been trained to come back to us on our walks mostly by using training treats every time they do as asked which are in the small bags we carry in our pockets, otherwise we have dog whistles and a couple of peeps usually works, that's unless Scruff is sidetracked by the sight of sheep then watch out!

Time for Call the Midwife so I'll settle down in front of the fire and tv in the hopes it's not a weepy episode because having just watched the final episode of Dickensian I'm emotionally drained!!

Good day - interesting day at church. Two children came down ill while at church so I have washed my hands a lot and will try to get plenty of rest.

Today is my Grandmother's birthday. She was born in 1886, the same year the Statue of Liberty opened. I have always thought of her as a wonderful gift in my life. She died late in the summer of her 100th year. Here's a picture of her (although not a great picture) with me on Easter when I was 2 or 3 I think. We had our gloves and hats and new shoes.

    ka356b7syftc.jpeg

Nice day of memories. I have been corresponding with my cousin. She sent me a photo I had not seen from when she came to visit about a year before Grandma died. She brought her daughter and everyone was smiling so much.

Two days of celebrating, I am exhausted. Will check in tomorrow after Robby leaves. Love that picture Lin, I remember wearing hats and gloves as well. Jeri, you and Ed look wonderful and I agree like love birds. Anne, I was telling my son who's wife is a quilt maker about your grandmother's sewing machine and he said it is probably worth a fortune. They looked at the old vintage sewing machines while purchasing a new one and they were valuable.

    Time to hit the couch.

I'm feeling oh so mellow after watching the next -to-the-last part of Downton Abbey! While I agree it's time to come to an end, I shall miss it! And I stayed awake the entire time!
PHOEBE, are you serious that you have lost 21 pounds? I hope whatever caused you to feel so poorly has been improved and you will be in good health now until you retire! And from then on, too!
MARIE, you don't have to apologize for a blessed thing, sis. You write from the heart, and you probably accomplish more than any 10 of us put together! Your talents speak for themselves, and you deserve all the thanks from each of us for starting this forum we all so enjoy! Take a bow, sweet lady!
SHIRLEY, keep improving and have a fabulous trip!
ANNE, you never waste our time! Always a pleasure to read your thoughts!
And PATSY, too! You put so much passion into each thing you do and think! From politics to painting, and on! Does John know how fortunate he is?
JACKIE, I think all we saw of you in that delightful video was a shadow, right? Was the other human being Scruff's owner? My son's doggie is Scruffy,...the one whose slipped disks caused the postponement of DS's wedding last year! Your walks on the moors is like walking through living history! I think of Wuthering Heights when I see the building and ancient monoliths, etc! I love that special bonding you share with ANNE!
SANDY, I hope your time spent with grown-up Bryanna for her 21st birthday was as wonderful as you looked forward to ! Time certainly does fly!
I must check out me new message machine, as people tell me when I am away, my machine tells them my voice mailbox is full! HMmmm! The new set was supposed to fix all that!
    Have a lovely, my lovelies!

Dinner was good last night and nice to be with the family again. I tried not to get close to Isaac but it was really hard due to my cold.

All packed and our friends are coming around 1:00pm I still have to get ready. I still have the cold but
blowing my nose much less I guess I should be on the mend.

See you when I get back. I will be having my tablet with me and we do have Wi Fi so I may peek in.

LIN, Lovely photo, proud grandma and pretty little girl Lin.
Today is just gorgeous, so gorgeous it inspired the normally lethargic Anne to spring clean. This is an annual event I have to be in the mood for, a moment to snatch before it fades away like a wisp of smoke. The logic behind this remarkable event, - I want to be out in the garden before the mosquitos return to torment me. I want to shake off two months of cabin fever and be out and about and spend my hard earned pension. Good start, down came all the drapes for washing and now washed, the ceilings got a once over for cobwebs and the furniture got a good old polish. I shall leave the window washing until May for who knows what capricious March and April might still throw at us. This is a very small house by the way, so don't go thinking I'm super Gran, but if I'm honest I AM feeling rather a smug gran!
So nothing new from grubby me. It was such a relief not going to the Chinese Buffet. Hopefully, I'll see my old friend soon, and especially with the weather improving and the side walks and buses granny friendly. She did phone me, a rare event these days, but she wasn't a happy friend, disappointed I expect. So sad, and this is why I must seize the moment each and every day and make spring cleaning a joyous event, hmmm, but maybe the joyous is pushing it a bit, lol.!!!!!!!!
Anne, who will definitely need a good scrub down herself! ❤️

Wow, did I ever have a relaxed weekend! But today is Monday and it's back to the real world. Working in my home office today. I couldn't help but think how nice it is that I don't have to go out. It was a yucky, rainy morning and I just put on my comfy, work at home clothes and looked out the window from my nice dry office. :) I have also worked in some laundry time today. Yesterday, I started a nice pot of chicken broth. Tonight, I look forward to enjoying some of the broth in a Barley Lentil stew (a family favorite).
Lin - Shoe update: I did not find any flats in my size. But I did find a nice pair of leather navy dress shoes marked down to $20 that fit nicely. (Happy dance!) Also, I LOVE the picture with your grandmother. That is so special! <3

Lovely sunny day today. John cleaned out his storage closet in his office. Some of the things he is donating to goodwill caused a slight catch in my throat. The baseball glove he used to play baseball with our kids. His old tennis racket and a lot of tennis balls. He and our son were tennis players for years. The knees and hips tell him to ease off on that activity. He now lifts weights and rides an exercise bike...easer on his knees.
A lot of Frisbees that we used to throw for Mazzy to catch. Well, as you can see, it needed to be done but there is so much sentiment involved I couldn't participate at all.

I had a giggle reading about Anne's cute note about feeling smug about her spring cleaning plans. If I were that organized, I would feel smug as well. So dear sneakers, I fear spring cleaning smugness will be far into the distance around here. I have difficulty getting rid of things I never use anymore including dust and grime I have come to not only tolerate but have a strange affection for. Oh dear! Now that's bordering on just plain demented. Therapy time...

I need to find some old photos to share. I loved Anne's sewing machine and bill of sale. Lin's lovely grandmother-granddaughter photo was charming. The sneaker photos are so wonderful. Thank you for sharing your life with us all.

Happy Monday!! :) First day of my 5 day week and although I went to bed early I am still tired.
Saturday's celebration was just too much for me and yesterday although a quick dinner I couldn't wait to get home and get into my sweats. Bryanna was happy, she had a great time Saturday because after we ate dinner all of her friends came to meet her. She has a lot of friends, I was happy for her, but I should have left earlier than I did. Yesterday was more quiet and I actually liked it better. She did not and will not drink in front of her dad, just out of respect for his recovery and because she said she would feel weird.

I have put my Arizona trip on hold once more. My son would like me to be able to stay a full week and that would not be possible for Spring Break so I think I will wait until the end of May beginning of June. Besides I will be done sitting then and can stay as long as I want.

I hope Shirley has a wonderful time on her vacation and the sunshine will heal her in no time.

Everyone else, please forgive me not posting to each of you but Monday's are hard. LOL

Crazy busy day, and the hour is late, again. But I so want to thank
LIN, for sharing her history! Twenty Five years is a long time, and I can certainly
empathized with the occasional wistfulness thoughts that appear. More hugs, dear friend!
And SANDY; happy Bryanna has become so sensitive to not hurting her Dad. And think you have made a wise decision about accommodating your son's invitation to spend a whole week
in Arizona. How wonderful you must feel!
I'll get back another day with more comments, but tonight my eyes are closing!

Good evening - just a quick note. Did some household chores/errands, a bit of cooking and them got caught up in finishing the book I've been reading. I may be done with this author. I find these long-winded books full to the brim with very sick twisted damaged characters are not for me these days. Back to less literary cozy mysteries for this old lady.

Now a bit of unwinding from living in a different world.

    Hugs my friends.

Back from swimming at the local leisure centre having first walked George around the village. It's a beautiful day with lots of glorious sunshine so I can take the cooler temperatures that come with it. With my secretary's hat on for the allotment association I spent yesterday afternoon catching up with paperwork and emails but goodness, didn't my muscles know I'd sat too long so today, as soon as I've had a light lunch I'm outside to clean out the hen house before driving to the moors (just five minutes away) for more walking with George.

Lin ~ What a delightful photo that is of you with your grandmother and I expect you wonder where all those years have gone..... I do whenever I look at old family photos. When it comes to reading books I unfortunately left one I had almost finished at the house of the friend I stayed with a couple of weeks ago but told her not to bother to post it on as I'm sure we'll be meeting up again soon and anyway it wasn't a mystery but more a gentle romance with a twist. Last night I began a new novel and talk about different with a raft of mysteries in the first few pages so I'm now going to have to be strict and only read before bed otherwise nothing will get done!

Buzz ~ Yes, that was my shadow in the video although because it was such a cold morning and we were wrapped up I'm not sure you'd have recognised me if I had appeared in warm hat, scarf and thick layers!! I'll see if I can get my friend to work my camera the next time and make an appearance!

Patsy ~ I probably mentioned my mother's casserole dish that was destined for the local tip a few weeks ago except I felt too sentimental about throwing it away so guess what.... it's still where I left it and I nearly fall over it every time I walk past!! Over the past few months I've decorated the rooms downstairs and moved any items deemed unnecessary to the spare bedroom ready to be taken to a charity shop so that now the biggest job of all will be sorting through yet again and being strong!!

Sandy ~ You are what we call "a rock" for pulling out all the stops to take care of Robbie 5 days a week and no wonder you're tired by the weekend but great that you enjoyed yourself with Bryanna celebrating her birthday.... late nights are a thing of the past for me too these days! Bryanna takes after you with her caring personality and sensitivity which is wonderful.

Anne ~ Yesterday as I eat my lunch I watched a programme called Bargain Hunt where couples search for antiques at fayres and car boot sales to sell on at an auction to see who can make the most profit and one team found a Singer sewing machine that would have been used to make leather shoes about 150 years ago. It had a recognisable Singer look about it with added bars across the top to support the shoe and they thought it worth the £90 being asked by the seller but when it came to the auction, as interesting as it was it still only made £30 so I imagine no one is making shoes at home these days!!!

Good morning to everyone I've missed but I must get on with cleaning the hens home!

    Jackie
